Economic Development for Central Oregon (EDCO) announced that the total awards in 2015 Bend Venture Conference companies hit $947,500, up from $620,000, which was awarded in mid-October at the end of the conference. Investments in two of the winning growth stage companies, Odysys and Perfect Company, have officially closed at $225,000 and $125,000, respectively. “With roughly $2 million invested in the competing companies over the last two years, the Bend Venture Conference has moved into a new league, and it’s showing in the quality of the applicants,” said Jason Moyer, Fund Manager for the 2015 BVC LLC.
A new way to help ensure the health of our local watershed is available to residents of Central Oregon. A sustainable approach to lawn care is being introduced by Accelerated Organics, aimed at breaking the cycle of dependence on toxic chemical fertilizers by restoring the natural food web in local lawns and gardens. Microbial soil restoration involves augmenting native soil with organic nutrient-rich compost, then applying an aerated "compost tea" containing millions of living organisms. The process develops a self-sustaining biodynamic environment that supports healthy grass and plant growth without the need for artificial fertilizers, and also prevents harmful runoff, soil toxicity and overuse of water.
Oregon State University-Cascades released its annual fact sheet in February, which provides a window into student and campus life. The compilation of enrollment and demographic statistics includes the most frequently asked questions about the campus and its degree programs alongside student profiles and information on the university’s new Bend campus, set to open this fall. In January, the university bought a 46-acre parcel, the site of a former pumice mine next to the new campus, to allow for future expansion. Current enrollment is 1,157, but officials anticipate an eventual enrollment of 3,000 to 5,000 students.

QUALITY OF LIFE Community Project Money Available
Applications for community projects are now being accepted by the city of Madras’ annual Community Grant Funding program. Past community project recipients include the Airshow of the Cascades, Relay for Life, Madras Aquatic Center and Kids Club. More than $90,000 was distributed last year with the Madras-Jefferson Chamber of Commerce receiving $58,000. This year it is anticipated that the city’s solar eclipse project will receive about $40,000 to prepare for visitors during the 2017 total solar eclipse. Smaller grant amounts typically range from $500 to $8,500. Application deadline is March 23. CI.MADRAS.OR.US

Novel Idea Proposed
Climbing in Redmond
Bike Route Planned in Prineville
Now in its 13th year, the Deschutes County Library’s A Novel Idea program has chosen Euphoria by Lily King as its 2016 selection. Programs inspired by the book will be held at the library’s branches in LaPine, Redmond, Sisters and Bend as well as other venues in Central Oregon. The program starts April 9 and will culminate in a presentation by King on May 1 at Bend High School. Tickets, which are free, will be available in April. The reading program is the largest in Oregon with more than 6,000 Central Oregonians participating in 2015.
Climbers have only been able to scale Redmond’s Maple Avenue Bridge for the past year and a half but the site is already receiving worldwide attention. Climbing magazine named the bridge as one of the “world’s coolest climbing structures” in its February/March 2016 issue and Sunset profiled the area in its blog in January. Built in 2007, the bridge’s three 210-foot arches cross Redmond’s dry canyon, which runs through the city on a north-south axis. One route is now open with plans to open seven more. The climb starts start at 45 degrees and eventually becomes horizontal.
A forty-mile stretch along Highway 27 from the City of Prineville to Prineville Reservoir came one step closer to receiving an official designation when the state’s Scenic Bikeway Advisory Committee gave the idea tentative approval in January. Now Crook Country must develop a more comprehensive plan detailing the bikeway’s exact route and what groups it will serve before it can receive final approval. One goal of the new route is to boost tourism while using existing infrastructure. In 2014, the McKenzie Pass scenic bikeway near Sisters generated $1.7 million for that area.

Famous Tree Life on the Rim
“A bald eagle just flew by,” Mark Monteiro said during an interview from Famous Tree, the 2,300-squarefoot custom-built modern home perched at the edge of a 1,400-foot cliff overlooking the Whychus Canyon Preserve ten miles northeast of Sisters. The preservation of the land came about after Mark and his wife, Melanie, purchased the 41-acre property twelve years ago.

“It was a monumental effort brought forth by an extraordinary group of people,” Monteiro said of the protected land that spans eight miles along the creek below their house. This land—and the view from Famous Tree—is forever protected from future development, providing a habitat for steelhead, salmon, deer, elk, cougar, eagles, hawks, coyote and

numerous smaller birds. Yet, this is just one of the property’s remarkable attributes. The house itself is a true hallmark of modern architecture in Central Oregon. It was designed by 2015 National Academy inductee James Cutler of Cutler Anderson Architects in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Monteiro said Cutler’s goal was “to make the house look like it fell out of the sky.”

Board-formed concrete was meticulously treated to achieve the perfect earth-tone color and wooden texture. The east aspect of the home is made entirely of floor-to-ceiling glass, overlooking the rim of the canyon with 180-degree distant mountain views to Broken Top, Three Sisters, Smith Rock State Park, the Ochoco Mountains, Gray Butte and Mt. Jefferson—as well as the occasional eagle flying by. SPRING 2016

We talked with the Monteiros recently about their experience creating this striking home. Where did the inspiration for the house begin? Mark: We were in many ways a very common story; a couple of people living in L.A., working in high-stress jobs yearning to get away from the city. So we packed up our dog and took a road trip up to Oregon. The second we walked through the woods and saw the canyon, we just looked at each other and we knew. It was such a gorgeous piece of land. The next thing I knew we’d hired architect Jim Cutler and we were out here with surveying sticks, plotting out a footprint for the house. How did the landscape dictate the design? Mark: Siting the house was crucial, which is something we spent a lot of time considering with Jim. After that, it was all about choosing materials that would work with the landscape instead of against it. What would you name as the most distinguishing features of the home site? Mark: The house sits on the edge of a 1,400-foot cliff looking down into a mini Grand Canyon. We have a 180-degree view overlooking the Whychus Canyon Preserve, eight miles of uninterrupted creek. It’s one of the largest river restoration projects in North America. So everywhere we look is potentially protected from future development. Beyond the desert landscape are the Cascade Mountains, with views of Three Sisters and Broken Top. What are the primary materials for the house? Melanie: There are three primary materials. The whole back side of the house is boardformed concrete, so the grain of the wood is imprinted into the concrete and then colored to the perfect earth tone. The interior walls

are the same as the exterior. It’s so beautiful that we don’t have any artwork hanging on it. The second material is floor-to-ceiling glass windows along the front of the house. And the whole interior is wood. The framing is really intricate and exposed and integrated into the interior design. Jim sketched and designed every last detail: every piece of hardware, the door handles, the pulls, the light sockets, the switches and a lot of builtin furniture and cabinetry. Everything fits together seamlessly. What was it like working with such a renowned architect? Mark: We had such a high level of confidence in Jim. He told us, ‘The way I do a house is that you will only speak to the contractor about sports and the weather.’ We just sat back and let him do his thing. Eight years later, I often find myself just staring at some small detail and just marveling at how intricate and beautiful the design is. He’s a true craftsman. Melanie: One friend pointed out that every single screw was facing at a right angle, all lined up perfectly. Sure enough, that was a directive from Jim to the builder—another intricate detail I hadn’t noticed before. Now that you are living in the house, how does the design translate into everyday life? Mark: The biggest window of the house is the one in the front of the master bedroom. My favorite time of year is in spring and autumn when there are more interesting cloud formations and weather patterns. The mist will form and rise out of the canyon and you’ll see these beautiful clouds coming off the Cascades. We can see the sun come up through that window. The window is like a frame, and every day is like a different piece of art. For more details about this home, see page 63. 18

Kirsti Wolfe
Kirsti Wolfe Designs of Bend specializes in interior architectural design for homes and businesses. With more than twenty-five years of experience, Wolfe continues to perfect her craft while concentrating on kitchens and bathrooms. Before launching her own firm, Wolfe was the senior design associate for a design studio in San Francisco and was involved in projects throughout the country including Hawaii and as far away as Mexico and Japan. With a master’s degree in interior architecture, Wolfe brings an informed understanding to each space as well as a keen attention to detail and sensitivity to the client's personal taste. She has designed for a wide range of tastes and styles from Early American and Country

Mixing Great Design with Warmth: Broken Top THE DIRECTION for a new home at Broken Top in Bend was
to blend traditional style with timeless elegance. Wolfe became involved with the project late in the process, with the framing already underway. The client came to her for help with the kitchen and master bath—her specialty. Wolfe sketched options for each area of the home until she and the client reached a decision. By removing several angled walls, she was able to incorporate more designed cabinetry and better flow through each space. “In the new design, I was able to increase the amount of storage space in the master bath-
room from twelve square feet to fifty-four square feet,” she said. “This is a good example of why it’s smart to hire a company that specializes in kitchens and bathrooms.” The clients were ecstatic, and asked Wolfe to complete the rest of the interiors of their home, too. This was homeowners' Doug and Linda Lonergan’s fourth home-building experience. Of all of the design professionals they have worked with, the Lonergans say Wolfe delivered the best experience and designs. “The proof is in the results,” said Doug Lonergan. “Without exception, our friends and guests have always said that our home is the perfect mix of warmth and exceptional design.”

Highlands Contemporary T HE DES I G N for a contemporary home at The Highlands at Broken Top in Bend project hinged on teamwork. “It is so important for the client to interview different people and put together a team to work on their new home,” said Wolfe. “The homeowner put together a great team from the start.” In addition to Kirsti Wolfe Designs, the team also included SunWest Builders and Neal Huston & Associates Architecture. Designing to the curvature of the home, while difficult, was Wolfe’s favorite part of the project. “I like to be challenged,” she said. “Almost every room layout had a curved element, so every detail had to be planned ahead, down to plumbing locations, electrical placements and cabinetry specifications.”

Another one of Wolfe’s favorite elements of the design was the kitchen’s highgloss, recycled countertops with red glass from a church in Southern California— where homeowner Roger Worthington used to live. Worthington, the owner of Worthy Brewing in Bend, said that with Wolfe’s expert guidance, the vision that came to fruition was beyond what he could have imagined. “Like most homeowners, I spend the bulk of the best part of my life in the kitchen,” he said. “Kirsti cooks up the best kitchens around. Modern and timeless, functional and efficient, durable and easy to clean, and bursting with those cool little touches that add up to a breathtaking piece of utilitarian art.” The result is a fresh, clean contemporary

design that flows continuously throughout the home, with the structural curves capturing expansive views of the Cascade Range. The best part, according to Wolfe, was being able to tell the client that they were under budget and ahead of schedule. Worthington said, “I recommend Kirsti to anyone. My only regret is that we got it right the first time so there has been no need for her remodeling acumen.”

Painting the Town SAGEBRUSHERS ART SOCIETY Above the Old Mill District, the walls of a little yellow house are covered with photography and all kinds of paintings while pottery and basketry crowd the tables. At first glance it may look like a gallery, but an abundance of messy art supplies points to artwork in progress–and that’s the point. In 1952, five local women founded the SageBrushers Art Society, meeting in a home to paint together and promote the arts in Bend. It worked. In 1959, the growing group realized that they needed more space to create and hold classes, and began renting and renovating their current location into a studio. Based in a small home with red shutters on Roosevelt Avenue, today the society boasts more than 100 members working across myriad artistic mediums. 102

“They’re all different—it’s not just one style, and that’s what makes it so fun,” said Sue Levers, the current president, explaining that the society’s purpose is not only to show art, but also to serve. SageBrushers provides the community with a space to meet, make art and critique one another’s work. Every day, different artists gather, such as the “Dusty Dames” pastel group, and the society brings in well-known painters to teach classes ranging from pottery to Chinese brush painting. SageBrushers frequent Bend’s First Friday Art Walk, seeing it as an opportunity to showcase the work of its members and raise money to maintain their organization. SUE SMITH When she was 50 years old, Sue Smith picked up a paintbrush and discovered a passion. “I didn't think seriously about being an artist until I turned 50, then I realized it was the only thing I wanted to do,” she said. Smith returned to school, majored in art at Oregon State University, and afterward traveled to Italy to see and study the Renaissance masters. During this time, she developed a more realistic style and applied it to her surroundings. A California native, Smith settled in Central Oregon and started painting the contrasts of the natural surroundings of her home. While most of her works revolve around landscapes, Smith also incorporates a human presence into some of her paintings. Though many of her works comprise desert scenes, Smith loves to paint the rivers and creeks near Bend. “There is both action and stillness, moisture and aridity,” said Smith, describing a painting of Steelhead Falls in Terrebonne. “The poetry in these contrasts adds to the richness of being alive in this place.” Working mostly in oils, Smith said her influences include modern contemporary artists Sherrie McGraw, David Leffel, and Rose Frantzen; her own works have garnered attention across the country. She has participated in national and regional exhibitions, is a member of Women Artists of the West, Oil Painters of America, and the National Association of Women Artists.

Art of the Moment ALISA HUNTLEY Artist Alisa Huntley likens her painting method to parenting moments , such as watching her teenage daughters goof off with friends or her son’s belly laugh. “These moments of presence and authenticity in life also occur for me as I paint,” said Huntley. “My challenge as an artist is to be in the moment with all senses engaged and receptive to these daily miracles.” Huntley studied art at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo and lived in Delaware, Florida and the Willamette Valley before settling in Bend. Subjects of her work range from landscapes to skyscapes to local flora and fauna. According to Huntley, her art and self are reflected in the places where she has lived. Swirling colors and a jewel-like glow characterize her compositions, which she paints on copper. Huntley said she stumbled upon copper as a surface a few years ago and discovered that the technique had a long history. During the Renaissance, canvas was unavailable, so many master painters such as El Greco and Rembrandt painted on copper plates. Huntley compares her painting process to that of a watercolorist, applying oil on metal in transparent layers, allowing some of the copper to appear through it. As the paint flows and spreads, the composition drips and dries with a different feel and modern aesthetic that has sparked commissions for her paintings locally, nationally and internationally. Not only do Huntley’s paintings show light reflected on mountains ranges and lakes, her works also reflect her quest for truth and what is genuine. For her, each painting comes back to the moments. “When I enter these moments, the painting flows,” she said, “I form a relationship with my subject, and if I am completely present, the relationship is authentic. Then the work has the potential of communicating something beautiful and meaningful for others.”

Spring is the time for the Central Oregon hat trick: ski in the morning, golf in the afternoon. SPRING INTO ACTION as ski season winds down and golf gets in swing. With two mountains and more than twenty courses within fifty miles, Bend is one of the best places in the country to enjoy skiing and golf in the same day. Here are our pairings for both sports.
Mountain Mornings Make turns on the mountain and exercise the benefits of spring skiing. Blue skies bring gorgeous scenery, lower lift ticket rates, short or nonexistent lift lines, less bundling and rock-star parking. Just don’t forget sunscreen. This year, closing day at Mt. Bachelor is May 29, while Hoodoo hopes its alpine skiing season will last through early April. Both resorts reduce prices after peak season and host special events. Look for equipment sales and demo days, as well as activities such as Easter egg hunts and pond-skimming competitions. Mid-April brings the Big
Wave Challenge to Mt. Bachelor, a snowboard-only event built around a course comprised of huge half pipes and banked corners that make for big air-time. For cross-country skiing, our area boasts one of North America’s longest seasons for groomed Nordic trails. Squeeze in some extra workouts at Mt. Bachelor’s Nordic Center, which offers fifty-six kilometers of track open through mid-May. Other cross country trail systems in the area include Meissner Nordic, Paulina Lake Lodge, Tumalo Falls and multiple sno-parks.

GOLFBOARDING Golf just got more adventurous–now you can ride the greens on a GolfBoard. Built in Bend and co-developed by surfer Laird Hailton, these all-terrain motorized skateboards mimic the motions of snowboarding while taking you to the next tee. Launched last year at Tetherow, the invention took off across the country with more than 100 courses jumping onboard. Afternoon Tee When the snow softens in the afternoon and gets too slushy to ride, head downhill to the greens and work on that golf swing. The Bend area boasts its fair share of fairways, from Sisters to Sunriver and beyond. Many courses have mountain views, allowing you to see what you skied in the morning. Gunpowder Ranch pork is probably the best pork in the West. We get two pigs per month and incorporate them into our meat case. My favorite right now is a chorizo (pork sausage) that we make. I take it out of the casing and make tacos with it. With cabbage, Cotija (a type of Mexican cheese), radish, green onion, cilantro and lime, it’s simple, but sooo good.
Rich in fat and fat-soluble vitamins, spring cream has an almost grassy flavor that stands on its own. Steep fresh mint in cream at a low temperature, then make it into mint whipped cream or ice cream. Luckily, mint grows like a weed here. Mint whipped cream with chocolate chip cookies is my favorite simple dessert in the spring.
One of my favorite late-spring treats in Central Oregon is local garlic scapes (the flower bud of the garlic plant, which tastes like garlic and can be used in the same way). I love to grill or sauté them with our coastal California fennel pollen rub and either eat them as they are or chop them and add them into other dishes including pastas and salads. They are a great seasonal garlic option for any garlic lover. 112

As the snow melts, it's time to lookout for fresh morel mushrooms popping up through the pine needles along the creeks here in Sisters. My favorite spring special is a sautéed morel mushroom soft-scramble with spring garlic, spring onions and fresh goat cheese. Throw a bit of crispy bacon in there to bring the flavors over the top.
