L AU R E LWO OD D IST R ICT AVA Nestled between the Cascades and the Coast Mountain Range, the Willamette Valley, and its renowned AVA is a spectacular 150-mile stretch of gorgeous countryside, rolling hills, tranquil valleys, and world-renowned vineyards. Within the most Northern tip of The Willamette Valley AVA, West of the city of Portland, and part of the Chehalem Mountains AVA lies the Laurelwood District AVA, established in 2020. There are 25 wineries, and approximately 975 acres of vineyards withing a coverage area of 33,600 acres. The AVA includes the highest elevation in the entire Willamette Valley, at 1,633 feet. The Laurelwood District AVA was named for the soil that predominates in this location. Laurelwood, a silt-sized sediment composed of a basalt base dating 15-million-years ago, was formed by the movement of the glaciers of the last ice age grinding down on basaltic and other volcanic rocks. Combined with the iron-rich Missoula Flood loess top layer, the Laurelwood soil sits on a fractured subsoil of basalt which provides excellent drainage and encourages deeply rooted vines. Laurelwood is a distinguishing feature, and the district has the highest concentration of Laurelwood soil in all of Oregon. Quick Facts:
