Dear Friends, We are pleased to share with you CASA de Maryland’s 2012 Annual Report. This year CASA has been at the center of many profound developments for immigrants and low-income communities both locally and nationally. We hope that you enjoy this brief recital of some of our most moving accomplishments. In the excitement of immediate services and campaigns, it is easy to lose sight of the long-term planning that builds our organization’s and community’s future. This past year, the Boards of Directors of CASA de Maryland and our sister political organization CASA in Action adopted CASA’s Strategic Plan for 2011-2016. Our new strategic plan establishes the direction and goals for the next five years for CASA de Maryland and CASA in Action. The challenges and opportunities for immigrants have never been greater, and CASA has responded with a bold and transformational blueprint for action. With this plan, CASA adopted a new mission — to create a more just society by building power and improving the quality of life in low-income immigrant communities. Our new vision is of a future with diverse and thriving communities living free from discrimination and fear, working together with mutual respect to achieve full human rights for all. As we look forward, our goals to expand and improve the movement will transform the neighborhoods of Maryland and the region into communities of growth and prosperity. CASA: the next five years CASA’s
new
strategic
plan will take our organization in exciting new
directions – quadrupling our membership and friends while focusing in on building a broad youth movement. Providing collaborative and transformative services while organizing those services to challenge the systems that hold people back. Deepening our joint futures with the African-American community while focusing on a resolution to the immigration crisis that cripples our nation. Focusing very locally on rebuilding Langley Park while expanding into new states with underrepresented communities ready to challenge unresponsive political leadership.
Creating new citizens and registering new voters. And accomplishing all of that while diversifying and strengthening our financial support and focusing in on organizational excellence. Big tasks that will be accomplished by a dedicated team and members hungry for more.

The American Dream Belongs to Aspiring Citizens Making a difference in other people’s lives is all Nayoka “Najee” Dawese wants to do. Through her position as an AmeriCorps volunteer at CASA she is making a direct impact. Najee arrived to the United States ten years ago from Panama. Now she is an empowered U.S. citizen, and CASA was there every step of the way.
Through the years Najee has relied on CASA’s immigrant integration services to help her navigate her way towards citizenship. When she fell ill and felt overwhelmed by the complexities of the U.S. health care system, CASA assisted her with her medical questions. After her son Jorgey was born in 2010, Najee turned to CASA again to take the final step to becoming a U.S. citizen. CASA’s citizenship classes and individual assistance helped her prepare for the test and overcome her anxiety. Now, as a proud U.S. citizen she volunteers through AmeriCorps at CASA’s Baltimore Center so that others like her can have the help they need.

Ana Mejía left El Salvador vowing to do whatever it took
to provide a better life for her two children. She settled in Hyattsville and quickly realized that to be able to provide for her family on her own she would need to learn new skills and gain new experiences. She joined CASA de Maryland and began completing vocational training courses such as Building Maintenance and Engineering (BME), Ceramic Tile and Painting, and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), becoming the most accomplished woman in CASA’s vocational training program’s histroy. During class she showed persistence dedication to learning new strategies.

The American Dream Belongs to Immigrant Business Owners Carlos Perozo, a Venezuelan immigrant, started ZP Tax in 2007 after noticing the widespread
abuses the Long Branch immigrant community was experiencing. He began to provide free tax assistance to those in need, and soon became involved in the Long Branch Business League working to revitalize the neighborhood. When he heard about the proposed Metro Purple Line he joined CASA’s Fair Development Coalition to help protect vibrant immigrant small businesses and communities.
In addition to his work on fair development he also participates in CASA’s tenant rights campaigns. Carlos uses his position as a small business owner to campaign against Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Secure Communities Program and against abusive landlords. Carlos feels that now that small business owners are standing up for their communities, politicians are listening.

At the close of a victorious 2011 legislative session, DREAMers were celebrating the long overdue passage of a Maryland tuition equity law for immigrant students. When the anti-immigrant opposition collected signatures to put the issue to a popular vote, CASA pulled together a strong coalition that launched a winning campaign. In November 2012 we made history when Maryland voters defended immigrant rights by majority vote for the first time in any state’s history. Not only did we win the Maryland DREAM referendum, we also built a fierce youth movement and permanent relationships with African-American organizations and voters that delivered a super-majority vote on Election Day. Our victory was not ours alone. From faith leaders to organized labor, teachers to elected officials, people pulled together to send Maryland and the nation a critical message: voters, put to the test, will support dignity for immigrant families.
