FREE ADMISSION TO THE SOUTHERN MUSEUM ON MUSEUM DAY

The Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday, September 22, 2018 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 14th Annual Museum Day, a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums. Museum Day represents a nationwide commitment to access, equity and inclusion. Over 250,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event, and Museum Day 2018 is expected to attract more museumgoers than ever before. The theme of this year’s Museum Day is “Women Making History,” honoring women in society who are trailblazers in the arts, sciences, innovation and culture, and emboldening others to be pioneers as well. “This is the Smithsonian in your neighborhood,” said Dr. Richard Banz, Executive Direct, “Museum Day is the one day of the year where we are open for free. There is also a wonderful sense of comradery knowing that our affiliation with the Smithsonian allows us to connect with various museums for a common purpose and theme.” Staff will post throughout the museum several biographies of women who “made history” during the Civil War, transportation, industry, or other connections to the interpretational scope of the exhibits. The Southern Museum will also host four screenings of Smithsonian Channel documentaries that highlight female trailblazers across popular genres such as culture, science, air & space, and history. Please visit the museum website for full descriptions and show times. Museum Day tickets are available for download at www.Smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on September 22, 2018. One ticket is permitted per email address. A list of participating museums, which will be continually updated as more museums continue to register, can be found at www.Smithsonian.com/museumday/search.

page 5 Bright Side WHY WE SAY WHAT WE SAY..

This month I wanted to share the origin of the word TACO and then briefly tell the story how they became what we eat today. According to University of Minnesota history professor, Jeffrey Pilcher, it likely came from silver miners in Mexico. As opposed to using pickaxes to dig for silver, miners realized that they could use improvised explosives. They would take gunpowder and a fuse and wrap it up in a piece of paper. This was placed in a hole, the miners would light it, and run! This explosive was called a TACO, meaning plug, referring to the rolled paper. Soon people started making rolled tortillas filled with meat and cheese, and called these “Miners tacos,” because they looked like the explosives.

Eventually TACOS made it to the taquerias(restaurants) in Mexico City. Here it became the popular food it is today... almost. About 1905 immigrants from Mexico started moving into the United States and they brought tacos with them. Tacos were sold mostly in Texas and were viewed as lower class food. During the 1940’s Mexican restaurant owners in the United States started making TACOS with a fried tortilla, creating the hard-shell taco. This was done because corn tortillas don’t stay fresh for very long. Glen Bell, in the mid 1950’s, claimed he had invented the hard-shell taco at his taco stand. Patent records confirm; however, they were already widespread in the 40’s. Later Bell went on to open a new restaurant franchise chain, Taco Bell.

ACWORTH BUSINESS ASSOCIATION Dave McClanahan, CFP® PRESIDENT

Fall is in the air and business is booming in Acworth August was back to school month, and the Acworth Business Association kicked of the school year with a lot of business and a lot of love for our students, educators, and supporters. We hosted teacher appreciation lunches and breakfasts for 12 of our local schools and over 1,200 teachers and staff. ABA kicked of the local high school athletic season in style at our luncheon, highlighting some of the football players, and the coaches impacting and shaping many of our future business owners. Guston’s hosted a packed crowd of business owners and professionals at our Alive After Five, and dozens of referrals were passed in our 2 Morning Jolt events. Last but not least, Acworth business women packed out Cedar Plantation for our Women’s Business Network luncheon. The YMCA was our sponsor of the month. Save the date now for Taste of Acworth! Now is the time to mark Saturday, October 13th 2018 on your calendar for Acworth’s biggest event of the year: ABA’s Taste of Acworth with Superior Plumbing. In addition to the great food, there will be two stages providing live entertainment throughout the day including the fun fashion show at noon and dog show at 3pm. The event also includes a kid zone featuring inflatables, a quad bungee, and challenging games. Taste of Acworth benefits local schools and charities and features 150 area restaurants and businesses. If you do business in Acworth, you need to have a tent at Taste of Acworth. Anyone who participates will tell you that you cannot afford to miss promoting your business to over 20,000 people, and rubbing shoulders with key Acworth businesspeople. As an entrepreneur myself you can be sure I will be out there highlighting my business—probably with sunglasses and beverage in hand! Go to AcworthBusiness.org and learn how to sign up for a tent at Taste of Acworth. ABA in September

Before the Taste, the Acworth business community is gearing up in September for our biggest and best Fall ever. Don’t forget to join ABA for our September luncheon Thurs, Sept 6th, featuring a panel including some of the most influential businessmen and women in Acworth and the surrounding area. Another key event in September is our special Fair Alive after Five on Wed, Sept 19th hosting all area business associations. The is the Alive After Five when we kick off the North Georgia State Fair at the Fair Grounds in Marietta. There will be great food, a huge crowd of local businesspeople, and several rides will be open for preview if you dare! Join us for our two September Morning Jolts and Women’s Business luncheon as well. A big thank you to Cobb EMC as our Monthly Sponsor. If you do business in Acworth, ask yourself: Why is the ABA bigger than it has ever been? Why are more and more businessmen and women sponsoring in events like the Taste of Acworth? I believe it’s because we know we are better and more successful together. There is a kind of magic in a community like Acworth, and part of it is local business. We always welcome new members, even highlighting them at a packed crowd each month at our monthly luncheon. Let me encourage you to get off the fence and join the Acworth Business Association today.

New Rules for Meals and Entertainment By Andrée F. Crow, CPA

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) was passed with an effective starting date of January 1, 2018. Part of this major overhaul to the tax laws relates to the tax treatment of business meals and entertainment. Under the old law business meals and entertainment were 50% deductible if they were considered “ordinary and necessary” and were “directly related to or associated with” business requirements. Meals with clients, taking business associates to sporting events, etc. were 50% deductible for tax purposes. An exception to this rule was a category of meals that were 100% deductible if the meals were served on the business premises for the convenience of the employer. Two examples allowed as 100% deductible are meals served after hours so that employees could keep working and a free cafeteria to employees, which was considered de minimus fringe benefits. Under the TCJA, entertainment is no longer tax deductible. So, expenses related to amusement, recreation, and service or social membership dues (such as Rotary or Optimists) are now considered 100% non-deductible. However, expenses directly related to the attendance of business leagues, such as a Chamber of Commerce meeting, appear to be still deductible. Meals before, during, or after sports events, or at entertainment venues, or if they are lavish or extravagant, are considered “entertainment” rather than meals, so are non-deductible. The “ordinary and necessary” rule still applies to meals considered valid for 50% deductibility. The 100% deductible category of meals was impacted under the TCJA, as well. Those meals served in-house, de minimus items, such as coffee and donuts, and other working meals, are now only 50% deductible effective January 1, 2018. Some exceptions still apply under the new rules that would be 100% deductible. Expenses for recreational and social events for the benefit of the employees, such as an annual family day, are still 100% deductible. Also 100% deductible are expenses related to goods, services, and facilities that are for the general public. An example would be a retailer serving food and beverages at a customer appreciation event that is open to the public. Businesses should track and segregate within their books the various types of expenses related to meals and entertainment. Have a separate category for non-deductible meals and entertainment, 50% deductible meals, and 100% deductible events. This way, you can make sure you are still getting the benefit of any deductible portion of the latter two categories.

ART OPEN HOUSE

SIMMER TIME CAFE & ART GALLERY

The Georgia Ballet begins the 2018-2019 season with “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Swan Lake” Act II September 21-23, 2018 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre. The performance will premiere entirely new choreography from Artistic Director, Daet Rodriguez, and Ballet Mistress, Margit Peguero. This new ballet is based off the spooky story of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story follows the journey of Ichabod, a teacher who travels to the village of Sleepy Hollow to teach school children. He quickly learns of the haunting of Sleepy Hollow and hears stories of the supernatural. He falls in love with Katrina, the daughter of a successful farmer. Ichabod intends to win her love, but is not the only suitor who seeks her hand. The show will premiere Friday, September 21 as a Sensory Friendly performance. Sensory friendly shows are shortened and adjusted for children and adults with various visual and auditory sensitivities. There will be open seating to allow for comfortable participation. The 2018-2019 Season repertoire also includes The Georgia Ballet’s “The Nutcracker”, November 29-December 2, and “Remembering Iris”, a tribute to our founder, Iris Hensley, March 8-10. For tickets and information, visit www.georgiaballet.org/ season.

The public is invited to attend Simmer Time Cafe & Art Gallery’s Art Open House on Friday September 14 from 6-9 pm. Their September is themed “Local Art, Local Artists” that will focus on the local, meaning Georgia, artists that have produced works representing or showing locations such as Kennesaw mountain and other scenery. Helen Hamerton works in watercolor and will have her works in the show, many of which are of Kennesaw Mountain and the surrounding area. Lance Lewin, an extremely talented photographer ,has a way of capturing moments. His works depict the scenery of his trips to Jasper Georgia where he took a few of the pieces we have in the Gallery. Tina Stoffel works are inspired by the little things in her life and travels. She paints life into Scenery, flora and fauna, plants and animals, in simple yet gorgeous compositions. There will be more works on display, including Stormy Miller, Maria Starr, Sarah Patterson, and Dave Simoneau.

THE ACWORTH’S MAYOR’S DESK

September is here and now we can officially say that the Downtown Redevelopment project has been underway for a full year! We are pleased with the progress we have seen so far and can’t wait to see what the end of the year will bring. Over the past 15 years, the City of Acworth has been on a mission to revitalize our downtown area in order to make it a walkable and economically thriving community. Features of the project include an ADA pedestrian railroad overpass; the development of a left-hand southbound turning lane at the intersection of Main Street and Lemon Street; the creation of a two-way boulevard that connects Lemon Street at the railroad tracks to the new Logan Farm Park Expansion; a round-a-bout at the intersection of Lemon Street, School Street, and Cherokee Street; a pedestrian plaza where Cherokee Street connects with Northside Drive, the development of additional downtown parking, and wayfinding signage. We currently see that various walls and curbing have been completed along the Lemon Street Boulevard and that the roundabout has pretty much taken shape. We are eagerly anticipating the construction of the award winning roundabout. You may also have noticed that the traffic signal at the intersection of Lemon Street and Main Street has been temporally replaced with a three-way stop. Contractors have begun upgrading that intersection with new mast arms and traffic signals. Spring 2019 will bring the completion of the Acworth Community Center which will feature two full size basketball courts, group exercise room, classroom, recreation administration offices, and a banquet hall that can seat 300 people. Depot Park will reach completion in early 2019. The replica train depot will be located next to the Caboose on Main Street. One side of the facility will feature an interactive electronic history display in addition to static displays and the other side will be public restrooms that will serve the Downtown area.

The Marietta High School Pep Band welcomed attendees with pieces normally heard at Friday night football games, and the band was accompanied by the Marietta High School Varsity Cheerleaders, All this hoopla and excitement was the perfect way to welcome the day’s panel of guest speakers – Ray Goff, former UGA head football coach who served as panel moderator; Andy Dorsey, the new athletic director at Marietta High School; Milton Overton, athletic director at KSU; and Jayme Pendergast, athletic director at Life University. The panelists responded to questions dealing with their coaching philosophies, their need for resources, the value of school-community partnerships, and the challenges they expect to face this year. All resoundingly agreed that educating students is their first and primary goal, and partnerships with businesses in the community can help them reach that goal through ongoing support of the sports programs at each school. Neck problems? Try Yoga

Lisa Browning, LMT, CPT and Certified Yoga Instructor

Over the last 15 years teaching yoga, so many students that begin and continue yoga classes comment that they have so much less aggravation and pain in their neck. It so great to hear that, and let me try to explain why that occurs so easily from practicing yoga. Many of the muscles that cause proper breathing are located in the neck and upper chest and back area. As you learn breathing techniques in yoga, you condition those muscles to have “tonus”. That means that they are fit, and able to move and support the head and neck without tension. On top of that, when you have a more efficient breath pattern, you breathe in a manner that does not tighten and aggravate the muscles. Correct breathing alone can alter the “fight or flight” mechanisms in the body. Integral breathing muscles; the diaphragm, inter-costals (between ribs) and belly muscles, are used dynamically while going through a yoga practice. When we use them well, we begin to create an efficient exhale. You develop tonus in those muscles, which creates a strong base of support through the torso for your spine. This is what is often referred to as a strong core. Also, when learning to do the asanas in yoga (the poses), we are directed to use a strong base. What this means is, that we use the feet properly, align through the muscles and joints of the leg and hip, and use the hip and core correctly. This “base” for the spine supports it very well, allowing for the curves of the spine to absorb shock and handle gravity. When the base is strong, the upper sections of the spine and torso and neck can function properly, allowing for easier movement, more strength development, and mainly; less aggravation and pain. Lastly, by having a “practice” that you stay dedicated to, you achieve many more benefits. You move regularly, you move better, you have better blood flow and oxygenation of tissues, your joints stay happier; all this contributing to fitness and less of a “pain in the neck”! And it may seem odd, but sometimes dry eye syndrome can cause watery eyes, because the excessive dryness works to overstimulate production of the watery component of your eye’s tears. Dry eye syndrome has several causes. It occurs as a part of the natural aging process, especially among women over age 40, and as a side effect of many medications, such as antihistamines, antidepressants, certain blood pressure medicines, and birth control pills. A rapidly increasing cause is insufficient blinking, such as when you’re staring at a computer screen, tablet, or phone. Dry eyes are also associated with certain systemic diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, rosacea or Sjogren’s Syndrome. Your eyecare practitioner may recommend artificial tears, which are lubricating eye drops that may alleviate the dry, scratchy feeling and foreign body sensation of dry eye. SENIORS Preparing to Age in Place

The rate of homeownership has fluctuated but not changed significantly since 1996 with 64.2 percent of Americans being current homeowners (U.S. Census Bureau). As the houses age so do the homeowners. By 2030, all baby boomers will be older than 65, leaving one in every five residents over retirement age (U.S. Census Bureau). Better Business Bureau encourages all those wishing to continue living in their home past retirement to plan early for aging in place. Aging in place is defined as the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably regardless of age, income, or ability level (CDC). While the goal of remaining in one’s own home is shared by many, it isn’t always feasible due to declining health and changes in finances BBB®shares these 4 areas to focus on when preparing to age in your home safely: 1.Safety Updates: One of the most significant obstacles to remaining in one’s own home is safety. Updates to consider may include adding a walk-in shower, safety rails, widening doorways and installing non-slip flooring. Find more information on the improvements that will benefit your quality of life as you age here. 2.Obtaining provisions: Getting the necessities like healthy food and medications to your home can be an issue over time. Luckily, grocery stores and food delivery services are growing in popularity, and medical delivery services seem to be developing as well. 3.Budgeting for expenses: Making changes to your home and continuous maintenance can get expensive, but you may find help from the local Area Agency on Aging, State Housing Finance Agency, welfare department, or community development groups. It would also be wise to seek advice from a trusted financial counselor as early as possible. 4.Preparing for emergencies: While emergencies may be stressful to envision it’s best to be ready for them before they occur. Living alone can make it difficult to get aid promptly following an accident, but technological innovations can help. Home surveillance cameras and medical alert systems can be a fast and easy way to summon assistance. Establishing a contact, perhaps a family member or friend, to check in on you regularly could also help without the technological investment.

Stunning 16.417 acres conveniently located off of Highway 61. This is a wonderful investment opportunity and location for a residential community. There is 600 feet of road frontage. The Zoning is R2 and rezoning can be requested. This is a fast-growing and high-density area.

MPC Fishing Team Goes to Nationals

Matthew 4:19, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men, is a scripture that MPC Fishing coach, Donna McCoy uses often when highlighting the successes of the Fishing team. It is the perfect scripture to describe what has happened in the program during the two years since it was started. The school fishing team, offers another opportunity to be a part of a community. It provides a chance for students to work together, build confidence, and become leaders. It also teaches those leaders about the importance of giving back, mentoring other students, and teaching them life skills. Fishing has become so popular among teens that the school is launching a middle school team this year as well. MPC has successfully competed in many high school fishing competitions around the state and in Alabama. The team placed in State competition, and also sent two members, Carter Koza and Mason McCoy, to the Bassmaster High School National competition this summer in Paris, Tennessee on Kentucky Lake. They finished in the top third out of 340 teams. The fishing program is providing more opportunities for the students since many colleges are now offering fishing scholarships. Senior, Mason McCoy has already received one offer. Coach Donna McCoy says “I love watching the students grow, find their strengths, and gain confidence.” Mason added, “Fishing is both physical and mental. It involves hard work, teaches you the importance of community, and generally makes you a better person.

Expectations vs. Reality: Living out of district

Elyssa Abbott, NCHS MAGNET SOPHOMORE

NC’s Magnet students live all over the county and can spend up to an hour and a half on the bus ride to and from the school. The students commit to the program expecting an increased workload, but do not realize the full extent of the challenge involving the distance between home and the school. “I knew that being out of district would make it hard to attend every event, “ Magnet sophomore Mayah Bourne said. Bourne involves herself with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Tribal Connections, Change for Change, and the Girls Varsity Soccer team, making transportation to every meeting and practice an obstacle. With a schedule as busy as Bourne’s, living 45 minutes away from NC poses as a major inconvenience. Due to NC administration’s mandate that Magnet students become involved in the school, Magnet coordinators require each student to participate in at least two extracurricular activities. Although students appreciate this challenge when college application season rolls around, it poses a complication for those that live outside of the NC realm. This requirement causes students to sign up for clubs and activities, and when they cannot attend, creates concern for the clubs. “I feel like the requirement is inconsiderate to those of us who can’t make the commute. I rely on the bus as my transportation,” Magnet sophomore Abigail Addis said. Students understand that living far from the school includes downfalls, but NC must make improvements to encourage students to participate in extracurriculars. The Magnet program could provide a “late bus” to escort students home two hours after school ends, reduce the requirement to just one extracurricular, or set up a framework to help organize carpooling. Although clubs have began to offer morning meetings, students, especially underclassmen, still find difficulty becoming involved with their own school. “I would prefer the coordinators talk to these kids individually to find what works best for them,” Addis said. Throughout NC’s 12 years of the International Studies Magnet Program, current students hope that administration considers these revisions. With changes, future students will participate in more clubs and activities, due to accessibility of transportation, and create a smooth, fulfilling high school experience. Editor’s Note: This article was originally printed in the NCHS school papre “The Chant”.

RED ONION PRESS RESTORES OLD FREIGHT SCALE FOR ACWORTH

No one knew how old the freight scale was in the old shed. The Acworth railroad depot had been decomissioned for some time and removed from Main street in the late 1960’s. Just day’s before that happened, a group of young Acworth’s finest, led by one “Moose” McCray, rescued the freight scale and moved it to a safe location in downtown Acworth. The scales were already pretty old and missing a few pieces, but the main parts were still present and intact. When Mr. McCray donated the scale to the Save Acworth History Foundation the Red Onion Press workshop was approached by the Foundation and asked if we thought the scale could be restored and if we could do it. The Red Onion had just completed the restoration of a 1911 Chandler and Price Printing Press that had been found abandoned in a shed on Old Stilesboro Road, so the Foundation thought we might have the skills to restore the scale to it’s original state and in working order. The Red Onion Press is made up of a group of professional artists, educators, craftsmen and volunteer members who share a love of arts, a knowledge of history and above all, working with our hands. We said absolutely, just our kind of project! Little did we know how much time and research it would take to find the information. Pictured above at the Scale dedication is the Save History Foundation board, along with Mayor Tommy Allegood and Clemens Bak, Red Onion Press

Power of Peace Project

On Sunday, August 12th, student athletes from North Cobb High School’s football team graduated from the Power of Peace Project program (POPP). This 40-day, summer program was provided to the students by utilizing civil asset forfeiture funding that was donated by the Acworth Police Department. POPP is an outstanding organization that helps build students up and inspires student leaders in ways that benefit the entire student population. Whether someone is a tough kid from an inner-city school, or a college-prep kid living in the suburbs, it no longer matters – this is not a rich or poor, black, white or Hispanic issue– because believing in the power of peace is a common bond that we all share – and now with POPP, we are collectively putting that belief into action.”

The program was a catalyst for change for many of the members of North Cobb High School’s football team, who participated in the POPP program, and the police department has provided funding for even more students to participate in it throughout the 2018-19 school year. This summer, Acworth Police Detective, Lamar Almon, joined in the program and encouraged students to identify their “Dream Killers” or temptations, and helped guide them to make positive choices in their lives. Through this program, he was able to connect with students on a personal level, and he believes that the experience has been invaluable. Detective Almon stated that one of the most important messages that the athletes received through the program was one of empowerment. He says, “The Power of Peace
