Festival fans and music lovers will converge in Kennesaw for two days of barbeque bliss at the City of Kennesaw’s Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival presented by SCANA Energy on Friday, August 24, 6 - 10 pm and Saturday, August 25, 10 am - 10 pm at Adams Park. The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is free. From its humble beginnings, Pigs & Peaches has grown into one of the region’s most beloved festivals attracting an estimated 65,000 attendees annually. Now in its 18th year, the festival features two days of non-stop music, good eats, cold beer and interactive family-fun. Attendees will find over 200 vendors, exhibitor and contestant booths, a Kid Zone full of inflatable jumpers, amusements and attractions, tons of tasty treats to satisfy every whim, and an incredible lineup of live entertainment and street performers. At the heart of the festival is a Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned competition, which is also recognized as official Georgia BBQ Championship event. Additional cooking events include a Backyard contest for amateurs, Anything Butt and Peach Dessert contests. Over $16,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to contest winners. Music headliners on the SCANA Energy Main Stage include the soulful, Motown inspired contemporary artist Cas Haley Friday at 8:30pm, and The A1A Band, the only Jimmy Buffet Band Tribute show ever sanctioned by Jimmy Buffet himself Saturday at 8pm. Supporting artist include Mind Games, The Weekend Getaway Band, Latitude Adjustment Steel Band, and Ace Suggs! Musicians on the Locally Brewed Stage include Atlanta Steel Pan, Brother Brown & Soulful Reunion, Parrot Island Band, Ace Suggs, the School of Rock East Cobb House Band, and Roger “Hurricane” Wilson. Other attractions include helicopter rides, a side-by-side zip-line, and the SCANA Energy Family Stage showcasing regional dance and performance groups. Saturday’s activities will be capped off with a spectacular fireworks finale at 9:30 pm. While public tasting is not offered as part of the BBQ competition, there will be dozens of vendors (including several cook teams) who will be selling barbeque and other food and beverages, including beer. Prices will vary among vendors. For the safety and comfort of festivalgoers, owners are discouraged from bringing their four-legged family members. Many dogs do not respond well to large crowds, loud noises and the heat. Public parking is available at several locations in downtown Kennesaw. Limited handicap parking is available at Adams Park, 2753 Watts Drive. Courtesy shuttles will provide round-trip services from offsite parking locations at Kennesaw Elementary School, 3155 Jiles Rd., and Swift-Cantrell Park, 3140 Old Hwy 41 Hwy., to the festival at Adams Park, 2753 Watts Drive, Kennesaw, GA. For more information, visit pigsandpeaches.com or call Kennesaw Parks & Recreation at 770-422-9714. Pictured above, Mayor Derek Easterling congratulates the 2017 Grand Champions.

Celebrate Jewish Food & Culture, Sept. 2nd & 3rd NOSHFEST….more than just food is presented by Superior Plumbing and Temple Kol Emeth. Noshfest enters its eighth year celebrating Jewish food and culture by showcasing delicacies and activities unique to Jewish heritage and bringing together members of Cobb County’s diverse community in a fun two-day festival. Enjoy drink and delicious food from around the world and browse booths of interesting and unique crafts and goods. Learn about the Jewish culture through interactive exhibits and tour the sanctuary with a member of the ritual committee. NOSHFEST is a “taste” event with samples sold from $1 to $5 of delicious food including bagels, kugel, brisket, latkes, potato knish, fried green tomatoes, ice cream, pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, hamantaschen cookies and much more. Artisans are from all over the southeast featuring their own hand-made crafts, paintings, clothing, furniture, jewelry and much more. Plan to shop for that unique gift idea. The entertainment stage will feature live performances along with cooking demonstrations from General Muir and Megan McCarthy (Edible Garden Chef at the Atlanta Botanical Garden), Kugal cook-off, Alex Guthrie Band and much more. Each day will begin with a flag raising ceremony and National Anthem. There will be a replica of the Western Wall in our Israeli booth that you will be able to place prayers. We will have several booths displaying and educating patrons on Jewish culture including scheduled tours of the synagogue. Since this is a family affair, there will be ample activities for the kids. The Kid’s Zone will feature interactive games and inflatables including giant slides, obstacle courses, bounces and Euro Bungy quad jump. NOSHFEST is a wonderful experience for the whole family! Admission to the event is FREE and we are encouraging everyone to bring two non-perishable items to donate. MUST Ministries will be the benefactor of the food donations and they do incredible things in our community. Temple Kol Emeth is located at 1415 Old Canton Road in Marietta, GA 30062. Open Sunday: 11:00 am to 5:00; Monday: 11:00 am to 4:00. For more information contact Bill Watson at 770-423-1330 or billwatson@jrmmanagement. com. Georgia Rural Hospital Tax Credit

By Raymond Rhoades, CPA Many Georgia taxpayers are familiar with the Qualified Education Expense Credit that benefits private schools. This credit has become so popular that the maximum credit for 2017 of $58 million was reached on January 3, 2017 (the first business day of the year). There was over $117 million in applications submitted that day so that each application was prorated down to 49.49% of the requested amount and no further applications were accepted. A similar credit, the Qualified Rural Hospital Organization Expense Credit was created in 2017 to benefit rural hospitals in Georgia. There are 58 hospitals in Georgia that are designated as eligible to receive 2018 dontions through this program based on their financial need. The maximum credit from January 1 to June 30 is $5,000 per year for a single taxpayer, and $10,000 per year for married taxpayers filing a joint return. After July 1 there is no taxpayer limit until the annual maximum is reached. The credits are issued on a first come, first served basis and the legislature has set the maximum credit allowed at $60 million per year. The $60 million annual cap for 2018 was reached on July 2. The payment to the hospital organization qualifies as a charitable donation deductible for federal income tax purposes, but must be added back to Georgia taxable income when claiming the credit. High income taxpayers whose deduction for state and local taxes will be capped at the $10,000 maximum deduction under the new law should consider whether this donation would benefit them in 2019 and, if so, donate early in the year. This tax credit has the potential to convert nondeductible income taxes to a deductible charitable contribution. The annual maximum was not reached in 2017. In fact, only about 20% of the available tax credits were utilized. The 2018 maximum was reached on July 2, 2018. As this program gains momentum the annual maximum will be reached earlier and earlier each year, eventually resulting in proration of all of the first day applicants. This donation/tax credit requires prequalification/preapproval by the Department of Revenue and must be documented with specific tax forms. The tax credit is limited to the taxpayer’s income tax liability. The credits are not refundable but any unused credit can be carried forward and used against the succeeding five years income tax liability.

Kennesaw’s Smith-Gilbert Gardens will hold its eighth annual hummingbird banding event on Saturday, September 8 from 8- 11 am, hosted by “Hummingbird Whisperer” Julia Elliott of Bird Watcher Supply Company. Executive Director, Ann Parsons says, “We are so pleased to work with Julia Elliott and Bird Watcher Supply Company to host this annual event. It is fascinating to watch the banding process and discover just how amazing these tiny birds are! This is a great program for the whole family.” Elliott received her federal Master Permit to band hummingbirds in 2010. She is one of only about 150 persons from across the United States and Canada authorized to band these tiny birds. The process of banding, recapture, and recovery provides valuable information about bird history, especially migratory details and the relative abundance of a given bird species from year to year. When a bird is banded, the bander collects important data about the bird’s age, sex, condition, and plumage characteristics. All the information is recorded and the birds can be tracked across the United States, if they are captured again. Children will be invited to make hummingbird craft projects in the Rose Garden, enjoy a scavenger hunt, play yard games, and visit the bubble ponds. The banding is a rain or shine event. WHY WE SAY WHAT WE SAY..

After last month’s article I received a request to write about the origin of the word HAMBURGER. The requester asked, “Why is it called a hamburger if there is no ham?” A dish similar to a modern hamburger has a long history in the Old World. One version, known as Hamburg Steak, was found in Hamburg, Germany. During the mid to late 19th century, Hamburg was a major port for immigrants headed to the New World. German immigrants and the German ship crews brought Hamburg Steak to the United States. Restaurants in port cities such as New York began to offer this dish as a way to attract these immigrants as customers. The dish was popular since it reminded the immigrants of where they came from. There are many claims as to who first put the Hamburg Steak on bread. Regardless of the origin, the HAMBURGER became popular during the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair and is an important part of our culture today. Another interesting food related word is KETCHUP. The earliest ketchup was a 17th century Chinese condiment called “ke-chiap,” which means “brine of pickled fish.” By the 1740’s, ke-chiap had appeared in England, where the name morphed into ketchup. Here they added mushrooms, which soon became the main ingredient. Mushroom ketchup can still be bought today in the UK. By the time ketchup made it to the new world, walnut and tomato had become other popular varieties. Tomato ketchup became very popular in the US the 1800’s, where it was sold by farmers. While tomato is now the most common variety, Heinz bottles are still all labeled as Tomato Ketchup due to the many types.

Back to School and Back to Business! July was another hopping month around Acworth business! We had 2 Morning Jolt referral events. One was a combined Morning Jolt hosting our friends at the Kennesaw Business Association where more than 50 business owners and professionals showed up at 7:45am at the American Legion to network and help grow each other’s businesses. We hosted our Alive After Five business after hours event at the new state-of-the-art Governor’s Gun Club facility. If you haven’t checked them out, you need to drop in to see their indoor trap shooting range—the only public one of its kind in the world! The businesswomen of Acworth also gathered at Henry’s Uptown for our monthly Women’s Business Network lunch. Lastly, we celebrated Independence Day with a packed crowd of Acworthians at Lake Acworth with live music and the best fireworks show around. Vacations are wrapping up, school is back in session and there has never been a better time to dive in at the Acworth Business Association. With our Monthly Luncheons at Northstar Church, 2 Morning Jolt referral events at American Legion Post 304, Alive After Five at Guston’s on Cobb Pkwy, and our Women’s Business Networking Luncheon at Cedar Plantation, there is no excuse for not leveraging the vibrant business community in Acworth to expand your customers and clients. Fall is around the corner and you need a plan If you are a business owner, professional, or in sales, you need a plan to hit the ground running this fall and ABA needs to be a key part of that plan. Pacing toward over 350 members this year, the Acworth Business Association is the best place to start to grow any business in Acworth.

We hope you’ll join us at one of these upcoming networking events and learn more about what KBA has to offer you and your business. Whether it is business leads or information you are seeking, we’ve got what you need to continue climbing toward your Peak. Now I need to get back to selling some school supplies or I may fall off my Peak. Happy August and back-to-school everyone!

In addition to our monthly opportunities, fall holds Acworth’s biggest event of the year, hosted every year by the ABA, The Taste of Acworth. Every local restaurant and business needs to plan now to be a part of this event that brings over 20,000 people through downtown Acworth every year. Circle Saturday October 14th on your calendar in red and join us for another fantastic Taste of Acworth. Go to AcworthBusiness.org to learn more about joining the ABA and opportunities to grow your customers or clients in around Acworth.

THE ACWORTH’S MAYOR’S DESK

School may be back in session but here in Acworth, we are still packed full of opportunities to get outside with your family! Acworth Beach Rentals and the Acworth Slide are still open for business on the weekends and all of our lakefront beaches are open through Labor Day. Come spend the day on the water and cookout at one of our covered pavilions. Pricing and hours for each of these parks vary, so please visit www. acworthparksandrec.org for additional information. In Acworth, we enjoy celebrating the educators who work hard in our community. Our principals, administrators, teachers, and bus drivers prepare for the upcoming school year long before the first day of school. It is their mission to provide our children with the greatest academic experience possible. We have two public high schools, three middle schools, five elementary schools, and three private schools serving our residents. We are proud to have so many great options within our city limits for our residents to choose from! We always like to take this time to thank our partners at the Acworth Business Association for welcoming our teachers back to school by providing eight different teacher appreciation breakfasts and luncheons during pre-planning. Our community is grateful for our teachers and we want them to know how much they are appreciated. We know how important their role is in the lives of our Acworth youth. This is a very special and welcomed annual tradition for our city! Through continued support of an anonymous benefactor, private organizations, nonprofit partners and the Acworth Housing Authority, we are excited to offer another year of the Expanding Horizons and Acworth Achievers Programs. More than thirteen years ago, a generous businessman approached the city about starting a program that made an “impact on the lives of children in our community.” That simple concept led to the formation of the Expanding Horizons Program that takes local children from the Acworth area on educational field trips during the school year. The Acworth Achievers Program is a mentoring and after school program that meets twice a week, year round. Participants hear from educational speakers, receive help from tutors, and assistance on their college entrance exams and applications. As always, for more information on any of these projects, events and programs you can visit www.acworth.org, sign up for our e-news blasts on our home page, “like” Visit Acworth on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter at @VisitAcworth. YOUR KIDS SOCIAL MEDIA APPS

What is a General Power of Attorney?

When teens were asked, recently, if they believe their parents know “a little” or “nothing” about what they do or say online, or even what social-media apps and sites they use, more than a quarter of them agreed. These are things kids wish their parents knew about Snapchat, Musical.ly, Instagram, Live Me and Tbh. “Talk with us about the apps we like to use and why. Most of you have no idea about our world.” A tip? Ask your kids which apps they spend the most time on (or check their phone’s data usage). Download those apps and spend time learning the ins and outs. “Help us keep an eye on who is following us.” Even when kids keep social media accounts private or provide restricted access, anyone can request to follow or friend them and potentially have full access to their postings. Accept that there are lots of good things on social media — it is not all bad stuff.” Social media isn’t good or bad — it is a new form of communication and language that adults need to learn, because pretending it doesn’t exist generally isn’t a wise approach. “Talk with us about sexting and healthy relationships in a way that isn’t awkward.” Tweens and teens who are socializing and navigating relationships online and in-reallife face challenges unheard of in previous generations. Some might mistakenly confuse the sending of explicit photos and messages with a level of intimacy that might not exist. Parents, check your local laws as sharing these types of photos could set your child up to be a registered sex offender for the rest of their lives. If we want teens and tweens to adopt better habits and healthier choices online and in-real life, we have to change how we talk about the social world, both online and inreal-life. In the end, promoting social media wellness is all about developing awareness and encouraging open communication, because teens who perceive their parents as unaware are less likely to seek their parents’ guidance and support in times of need — and that’s not a secret we want them to keep.

Although summer is a time of relaxation, it is also the time when most new laws passed by the Georgia legislature become effective. The spring of 2018 brought some significant legal changes affecting Georgia families. Last month we discussed the new Hands-Free law, and this article will address recent changes to general powers of attorney. This year the legislature improved upon Georgia’s new power of attorney statute enacted in 2017. A power of attorney is a document that allows a person (“principal”) to give another individual (“agent”) the authority to act on the person’s behalf. It is frequently used when someone is unavailable, incapacitated, or unable to make their own decisions. A general power of attorney can be very broad and include authority to engage in transactions involving real estate, banking, finances, and even estate planning. But a power of attorney can also be used for very specific purposes or limited to certain time frame, such as giving the agent authority to sign a contract or closing documents for sale of a home when the principal is out of town. Powers of attorney can be effective immediately upon signing or they can be “springing,” where they take effect upon a specific event or circumstance, such as the determination that the principal lacks mental capacity to make his/her own decisions. They can also be “durable,” meaning they continue to be effective even when a person becomes mentally incapacitated. The law was enacted to help reduce the potential for fraud and financial abuse in obtaining and using powers of attorney. The statutory power of attorney form is shorter and simpler, and it informs agents of potential civil and criminal liability if they abuse their powers and fiduciary duties. Most importantly, financial institutions are now required to accept valid power of attorney documents. A durable general power of attorney is a key document to have in place so that someone can step in and help you when cannot take care of your day-to-day affairs for any reason. If your estate plan doesn’t include one or the one you have is dated prior to July 1, 2017, consult with an attorney to make sure you are protected. ESSENTIAL Nutrition For Your Eyes dr dylan reach, acworth family eyecare

While a healthy, nutritious diet is essential for your physical and mental well-being, eating the right food can help you maintain a keen sight. To celebrate National Nutrition Month, we compiled the following list of essential vitamins to promote eye health. 1. Vitamin A/Beta-Carotene

Did your parents ever tell you that carrots are good for your eyes? They weren’t wrong. Carrots contain Beta-carotene, which your body converts into vitamin A. This vitamin is made up of antioxidants which protect the surface of your eyes and helps form a barrier against foreign objects such as bacteria and dust. 2. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is the most popular antioxidant as it helps many victims of colds and the flu. However, this vitamin can also help strengthen your body’s connective tissues—including corneal collagen. Vitamin C and also help reduce the risk eye health conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Your body cannot produce vitamin C on its own, so make sure to add plenty of citrus fruits, bell peppers and strawberries to your diet. 3. Vitamin D

Did you know that vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties that can help slow down your eyes’ aging process? The sun provides a natural source of Vitamin D, however, you can also find it in milk, cheese and other dairy products, as well as fatty fish such as salmon and tuna. 4. Lutein and Zeaxanthin

The Holiday Season is right around the corner. Let us show you the SIMPLEST & most COST EFFECTIVE way to send gorgeous, heartfelt PICTURE CARDS from your computer or your phone for fraction of the time & price to your clients, family & friends . . . All year round!

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the macula, along with a third substance, meso-zeaxanthin that must be manufactured in the retina from ingested lutein. Research shows that they can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. You can get both these nutrients by adding plenty of leafy greens to your diet!

BRIGHT SIDE COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER PROOF Call Carol at 770-851-5469

In 1990, then KBA President, David Grant (State Farm) had a wonderful idea -- the business community should partner with our local schools, providing support both financial and in the form of mentors and so the partnership began. Fast forward, nearly 30 years later, to the Back to School Bash with Kennesaw Elementary School and Big Shanty Intermediate. It has become a little upscale since our early beginnngs - originally several of us would gather in the back of KES and Wally Zimmerman and David Grant would cook hamburgers, hotdogs, and maybe some porkchops. Not so any more, a big thank you goes to Mike Schroeder and Carrabbas Italian Grill for catering lunch This year the excitement was high as over 200 teachers and staff gathered to celebrate Back to School on Friday, July 27 with lunch and Christmas in July. Marlon Longacre and his team put on a PARTY!. Chairman Marlon is proud of the job Sue Picardi did in contacting our business members to participate by becoming a sponsor or donating gift cards. Sue reports that she had 100 donors!!!!!! KBA has stepped up in a big way to support the bash!!! We have about 200 actual door prizes (min value $25) and 334 $10 gift cards to various businesses (that will go in the 300 teacher goody bags). In addition Sue raised over $3800 to purchase large item gifts to give away at the luncheon. Marlon says Sue Picardi is amazing -- she went the extra mile and also shopped for the large item gifts.. And a hat’s off to the KBA members who were on hand to make this day go smooth: Michael and Tammy Everhart, Rene Dollar, David Griffith, David Persson, Nadja Cook, Marlong Longacre Shelley Elder, Cassandra Stiff, Jason Watson, Michelle Cline, Jordan Carter, Austin Porter, Lynne Watts, Danielle Hilderbrand, Laurie Jewell, Kathy Ebener, Lisa Rimer, Diane Adams, Margo Hughes, and our special group from Kennesaw Mountain, including: Nathalie Paladives, Evani Patel, Vasu Patel, Kaylin Ebener, Ashwini Bulagaresh and Mehaa Krishnasary. It takes a village and you were all Awesome!!!!! Pictured above five happy Kennesaw Elementary School teachers stop for a minute to say thanks. Thanks Nadja Cook, Virtually in Focus.

MARIETTA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

On Monday, July 23rd, the Marietta Business Association luncheon titled MBA Education + Business = Mutual Success. The panel was led by moderators Julie Michaels and Leilani Plendl, co-chairs of MBA Education. Panelists were Dr. Tim Brown, CEO of Marietta High School College and Career Academy, Christine Ramirez, Director of Early Learning for the MCS, and Dr. Rona Roberts, Director of the MHS Student Life Center. Through existing and new programs, plus business involvement, children are getting exposure to different career paths starting as early as elementary school. In middle school there is more exploration into the possibilities, and in high school young people are able to figure out their aptitudes and interests and are given appropriate and relevant instruction. The new programs allow for flexibility, so students can explore more than one career path. A key part of their education is leadership development. As businesses donate time, products, services and money to help the students and teachers, strong relationships develop with staff, students and family; and the businesses gain visibility for their products and services. Find out how you can help at www.mariettasuccess.center or call 678.919.4506, or contact education@mariettabusiness.biz.
