Use of ER as Primary Care:

Local Providers:

“My daughter had a sore throat and I took her to the ER at Stonewall. They said it was viral.”

“I really love Dr. X.”

Private Provider Emergency Room- CSJH Emergency Room- Augusta Health

Poor perception of CSJH: “It takes an hour to drive to the ER at Augusta but I won’t go to Stonewall anymore.” “I took my son to Stonewall ER; they diagnosed a cold when he really had RSV- they didn’t test him like they should have.” Convenience of hours: “You literally sit up there in the ER forever…the time is ridiculous.”

“I remember taking my grandson to his family doctor, his temp was 102 and he told me to take him back home and give him Tylenol, he kept getting sicker, and I took him back to the doctor, and then I met Dr. X who saved his life; if she hadn’t been there he would have died.”

Regional Providers: At Augusta Health “they have a pediatrician on staff.” “I live in Glasgow, but I take my kids to Dr. X in Middlebrook…he always fits me in and he doesn’t make me feel dumb.” Medicaid coverage: “I wouldn’t be able to afford his medications without Medicaid.”

“There’s been times that I’ve deliberately waited until the pediatrician’s office was open…I really would have liked to taken them before that point…I knew something was wrong.”

“I didn’t have to pay for it…they check your Medicaid card” CSJH: 91
