Message from the Chairman of Trustees It has been a huge privilege to serve as Chairman of the Trustees since June 2015 and I am grateful to all my fellow Trustees and to all those who have supported the Charity over the past year. The Vaughan Foundation is a Charity which very quietly but very effectively works towards achieving its charitable objectives. In many ways the Foundation appears like a duck gliding across the water. It all may seem to be effortless and a perfect picture of smooth motion, but underneath the surface there is a mass of activity in order to keep afloat and raise the much needed funds to support the pupils of the School and the wider community. The Foundation could not undertake the wide range of work that it does without the huge amount of support it receives from a wide range of people and organisations. I hope that this small report will give you some idea of the work undertaken by the various elements of the Foundation:

The Vaughan Sports Association The Vaughan Music Association The Old Vaughanians Football Club The Old Vaughanians The Vaughan Parents Association

Finally, I would appeal to all of you to get involved in the life of the School and the Foundation. Come along and support the wide range of events being held each year. Whether it is a more formal event such as the Vaughan Foundation Dinner or Saturday morning football with the pupils, I can promise that it is always enjoyable. It is only by everyone working together and providing whatever help they can, be it financial or time, that we can continue to develop and provide the support which the School and local community needs. F McGettigan Chairman of Trustees

Financial Report

The Vaughan Sports Association The Sports Association continues to play an integral part in developing sporting opportunities for pupils at the Vaughan. September 2015 saw the resurgence of rowing; firstly as an indoor club which soon resulted in the reinstatement of Vaughan Rowing in partnership with Fulham Reach Boat Club. The newly-formed Karate Club has also proven to be successful and every attempt will be made to expand opportunities for participation in new activity areas. Between 2014 and 2016, the Sports Association provided support to over 140 pupils enabling them to embark on international tours to destinations such as Canada, South Africa, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Costa Rica. Such opportunities have proven to be very successful and have stimulated the growth of the Vaughan’s main sports such as Football and Rugby, where the enthusiasm and levels of participation have reached an all-time high. Athletics is another sport that has received great support from the Association and this year we celebrated the success of one particular pupil, Dominic Ogbechie. Dominic has been named as the Under-15 English Schools Combined Events Champion and he will represent England in the Schools International Competition in the Pentathlon.

The Vaughan Music Association Another busy year for the Vaughan’s musicians saw them perform a huge array of music in many different settings and the ambition and high standards that characterize the music work of the School were as strongly in evidence as ever. Excellent examination results in the Summer of 2016 were a suitable finish to a very strong year from the Music Department.

Performances were given in venues that included St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral, The Royal Albert Hall, St John’s, Smith Square, the Royal Festival Hall, The Royal Opera House, the Coliseum Opera Holland Park, Holy Trinity Sloane Square, Douai Abbey, the Bull’s Head in Barnes, the Half-Moon in Putney and all the usual places besides including Our Lady of Victories, St Paul’s Church in Hammersmith and the Wathen Hall at St Pauls School in Barnes. Highlights included a production of Les Misérables in the Summer Term, the release of a new CD from the Schola, the concert band winning through to the finals of the National Concert Band Festival in April and School Choir’s very strong performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah just after Easter.

At the end of the Summer Term the Schola travelled to Rome where it sang concerts at the Basilicas of Sant Ignazio and Sant Eustachio, for Mass at Basilica of St John Lateran, and for the Sunday morning Capitular Mass at St Peter’s Basilica.

The boys sang in four professional opera productions, including two with the Royal Opera at Covent Garden and these combined with other commercial work – film soundtracks etc – saw the Music Foundation raise more than £30,000 in the course of the year. This money supported the choir’s tour to Rome, the Schola’s latest CD recording made in November, and the performances of the St John Passion in March.

The Old Vaughanians Football Club Season Review 2015-16 It has been another action packed season for the OVFC as we continue to extend the reach of the Vaughanian community, winning positive comments and making friends home and abroad. Last season the First XI finished in a comfortable mid-table position, competing at a very high level just one win away from fourth. Meanwhile the Second XI spent much of the season at the top of the league, only to narrowly miss out on the title after finishing second to a very good Old Kingsburians second team. The Third XI also finished mid-table after a very mixed season, largely dependent on their ability to put out their strongest team. For the Vets, the OVFC over-35’s team, notable highlights included two AFC 11-a-side Cup competitions and the FA People’s Cup 5-a-side Tournament at Wembley. It is always good to see some of our older Old Vaughanians who still care deeply for the beautiful game and OVFC. For the third year in a row we took an Old Vaughanians FC squad to TuS Oberbrombach “Pfingsten”(Whitsun) Sportsfest weekend. We took a varied group of 15 players, with an age range of 19-58 years old. Our 11-a-side friendly was a great match for everyone involved and ended with the Vaughanians scoring in the last five minutes, finishing in a very diplomatic 3-3 draw. The OVFC also did well in the Sunday 6-a-side tournament, despite predictably losing to the Germans on penalties. Next year Tus Oberbrombach is celebrating its 125th anniversary so we plan on taking our largest

group to date, while they also plan on bringing a squad to London to compete in our 2017 OVFC 6-a-side. This year’s OVFC 6-a-side tournament was once again a wonderful success with many present and past Vaughanians coming together to enjoy this annual gathering of fun, football and sunburn. Enormous thanks to Dermot Collins, Tony Murphy and Brendan Ryan for all their efforts to make it possible. The OVFC would also like to extend enormous thanks to Mr D Murphy and Mr A Murphy for organising such a wonderful celebration of CVMS Football in the OVFC vs CVMS Senior Football tournament in April. Three excellent matches and 28 goals saw the Old Vaughanians winning two games, with CVMS winning the First XI match thanks to a very accomplished performance by the players. The links between the School and the Old Vaughanians Association are vital to the future of our club and provide excellent links to the Vaughan community long after leaving school and university. Also a huge ‘thank you’ to Mrs Evans, Mr & Mrs Higgins and Mrs Di Paola for their help with the post-match hospitality. Kieran McDonnell Chairman, Old Vaughanians Football Club

The Old Vaughanians Table Tennis and School Dinner Friday 6 November 2015, New Hall Old Vaughanians from across a variety of year groups from 1952 – 2000 were invited to join an evening titled ‘Back to School Dinner’. The evening commenced with an authentic school dinner of fish and chips and was followed by a table tennis tournament. There were five rounds until a winner was decided. The event was well attended but it was decided that future events will be more focussed towards specific year groups or groups across a 5-year span. Service of Carols Thursday 17 December 2015, Our Lady of Victories Four rows of seats were reserved for Old Vaughanians and their families at the annual carol service. This year we plan to host a drinks reception for Old Vaughanians prior to the carols and reserve seats again to encourage higher attendance numbers. 10-year reunion Friday 24 June 2016, New Hall and The Hilton Kensington Hotel This was the first official 10-year reunion for the Class of 2006. The event was well attended and former classmates enjoyed catching up again. Many had not returned to the School since they had left. The evening began with drinks and nibbles in the New Hall, before taking a tour of the new facilities and Addison Hall. They moved on to the Atrium in the Hilton Hotel.

25-Year Reunion Friday 1 July 2016, The Headmaster’s Office This event was the first official 25-year reunion for the Class of 1991. This was even more difficult than the 10-year reunion because most were not on Facebook or had changed their contact details since we last updated them. There wasn’t as much uptake for this reunion, however four close friends who don’t regularly see each other contacted me to say that they were all free and very keen to attend. The Headmaster agreed that it would be best to go ahead with the event and we decided to make it more of a private affair with a drink first in the Headmaster’s office before Mr Stubbings took the group on a tour of the new developments. The group then went over to Addison Hall where they were free to explore for half an hour. The event format was very successful and we hope to hold more tours and more intimate events for the older generations of Old Vaughanians. Other areas of engagement and future planning: Old Vaughanians were encouraged to attend the Summer Fête, the school musical and other sporting events throughout the year. Our focus going forwards is to establish a number of events throughout the year where Old Vaughanians are particularly encouraged to attend. These events are as follows: - - - - -

December: Service of Carols and drinks reception beforehand May: Golf Day June: 10-year reunion July: OVFC football tournament and Summer Fête July: School musical (nominated night for Old Vaughanians)

The Vaughan Parents Association The Vaughan Parents Association can reflect on a very enjoyable year with our now well-established calendar of social events. With six social events spread over the three school terms, these gettogethers are a great opportunity to meet fellow parents, to enjoy the warmth and good humour of the Vaughan, whilst raising additional funds to support our pupils with a wide range extra-curricular endeavours.

Michaelmas Term This year our Race & Bingo Night and Christmas Dinner & Dance sold out very early in the Michaelmas Term, with almost £5,000 raised across both events for the benefit of our Sixth Form Groups pilgrimage to Lourdes with HCPT. Our Auction & Curry Night was also hugely enjoyable, with over 60 Lots raising a magnificent £15,000 on the night for the Vaughan’s Pupil Support Fund. Lent Term A very busy Lent Term for CVMS Music was given a fantastic start in early February with a Sinatra tribute ‘Evening with The Big Band’, followed by our ever-popular Quiz Night, hosted by the Headmaster and attended by almost 200 parents and friends of the Vaughan. Our annual Golf Day on the Friday of the May Day bank holiday weekend provided a great opportunity for current parents and Old Vaughanians to meet up for a round of golf. With over 70 playing on the day, almost £4,500 was raised for the benefit of CVMS Sport’s Rowing Club. Trinity Term The fine weather on the first weekend in July provided the perfect setting for our busiest ever Summer Fête. With 160 boys playing in our Euro 2016 5-a-side, and over a thousand attending on the day, a magnificent £13,500 was raised for the benefit of our World Challenge group and CVMS Sport.

With such fantastic support from our parent community in 2015/16, I am very much looking forward to seeing you all next school year, participating in what promises to be, as is the Vaughan way, a very busy and enjoyable year. Tony Mars Chairman, Vaughan Parents Association

World Challenge Trip to Costa Rica The pupils and staff on the World Challenge expedition would like to thank the Vaughan Foundation for its generous contribution over the two-year process of the World Challenge Expedition to Costa Rica this summer. The aims of the trip are based in the personal development of the pupils, from increased confidence and fitness, to global awareness and money management; the expedition impacts on the rest of their lives in a multitude of ways. The process began when pupils signed up eighteen months prior to departure. A build up programme instigated the personal development processes that are matured on expedition: team building; leadership; problem solving; reflection; review and responsible travel. Completing this World Challenge expedition is an educational travel experience that will continue to reward reflective pupils long after they return home. Challengers achieve more than they thought possible by extending and being stretched beyond their comfort zone. This sense of accomplishment colours their ongoing view of themselves and their place in the world. Pupils have to push themselves over the eighteen months in terms of physical fitness, communication, teamwork and organisation. Engaging with another culture during the community engagement phase on expedition brings global and cultural awareness. Ultimately the own experiential yard stick alters. Challengers took ownership of destination research and itinerary planning, fundraising ideas and events, budgeting, preparation, fitness and nutrition. The build-up programme over the eighteen months is as important as the expedition, in teaching pupils important life skills such as teamwork and money management as well as camp skills. The expedition to Costa Rica was split into sections. Challengers were responsible for organisation of all aspects of the trip, from travel, food, purchase and cooking, accommodation and finance. The expedition began with an acclimatisation phase where pupils took on short treks in the north of Costa Rica, through a mountain cloud forest, in Monteverde and a volcano in Rincon de la Veija. A community engagement phase saw pupils work in a rural primary school in Golfito, in the southern tip of the country, striping, re-making, varnishing and painting a new set of desks and chairs. The final evening saw the Headmistress bring a cake for the Challengers.

The full Trekking phase was a three-day, 40km trek through the Zona Santos. It pushed many personal limits, and extended challengers range of experience, for example sleeping outdoors and meeting no-one other than the local Bull herder for three days. Finally the ‘Rest and Relaxation’ phase allowed Challengers to bond through white water rafting, a 1.5km zip wire and some time in local towns. Overall, the trip is an amazing opportunity for pupils to extend their experiences, learn new ways to interact and deal with others, expand their cultural view of the world and challenge personal limits to the extreme as well as learning how to respond to any situation, growing in life. Thank you. L Regan Head of Second Year

Vaughan Foundation Summer Ball The Vaughan Foundation Summer Ball was hosted at the newly refurbished Amba Hotel in Marble Arch on Saturday 11 June 2016. Two hundred parents, friends and Old Vaughanians gathered for a welcome drink at 7.30 pm before being seated for dinner at 8.00 pm. The evening began with a welcome from the Headmaster who thanked parents for their support throughout the year and spoke about how the Vaughan was celebrating another successful year. Matthew Lorenzo returned for another rousing auction and raffle. Overall, the event raised a staggering £10,000 for the Vaughan Foundation. Guests danced the night away and entertainment was provided by ‘The Cardinals’ a band featuring our very own CVMS staff members Mr Cardozo and Mr Cogavin.
