to this guide to the music-making at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School for the 2016-17 academic year. I hope there is something here that will capture your imagination and that current parents in particular will find it useful to have all of this information in one place. For 2016-17 the Music Department has once again put together an ambitious and varied programme of events, with opportunities for all: from Big Band gigs, to the Chamber Music Competition, to joint concerts with professional orchestras and choirs, and finally the hugely popular end-of-year musical. I hope that you will be able to join us at as many of our events as possible and provide your invaluable support and encouragement to our pupils. MUSIC DEPARTEMENT


The Big Band in concert with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra The Music Department is delighted to welcome the National Youth Jazz Orchestra for workshops with our instrumentalists and then a joint concert in the New Hall. Join us at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 19 October to hear this amazing Big Band alongside our players in what promises to be a superb evening. Refreshments available.

Concert in Honour of

St Cecilia 7 pm, Wednesday 23 November St Paul’s Church, Hammersmith The Vaughan’s annual celebration of Saint Cecilia, the Patron Saint of Music, is held at St Paul’s Church, Hammersmith. With performances from the School’s choirs and instrumentalists, involving around 180 pupils, this concert is always one of the most popular events in the School’s musical calendar.

Handel’s Messiah Schola Cantorum with Spiritato!

The Schola are joined by the exciting period instrument orchestra Spritato! for this performance of Handel’s great choral masterpiece. With the solos sung by members of the choir, this promises to be a wonderful evening in the beautiful setting of St Gabriel’s Church in Pimlico.

The Vaughan Service of Lessons and Carols 7.30 pm, Tuesday 20 December

The ever popular Vaughan Carol Service is once again held at Our Lady of Victories Church on Kensington High Street. With music provided by the Schola Cantorum and the Vaughan Brass Ensemble, this highlight of the School’s year provides the perfect start to the Christmas season. This year’s service will include the first performance of a new carol composed by Ben Parry, director of the National Youth Choir.

Admission is free with a retiring collection.


The Big Band Evening 7.30 pm – 10 pm Friday 3 February 2017 Join the Vaughan’s award-winning Big Band for an evening of swing and jazz. The Band will be joined by a number of vocalists whilst the evening will open with a set from Junior Big Band!

BRAHMS SYMPHONY No. 4

6pm - THURSDAY 2 MARCH ST JOHN’S, WATERLOO

Now in the eighth year of our collaboration, the Vaughan’s senior instrumentalists once again sit sideby-side with their young professional companions in Southbank Sinfonia to perform Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.

The orchestra’s work with us will also include a composing workshop for GCSE and A Level pupils on February 7, with a concert of the compositions at 5pm. Entrance Free


Festa Veneziana!

Schola Cantorum with His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts 7.30 pm, Tuesday 14 March 2017 Temple Church, EC4Y 7DE The Schola are joined by the acclaimed ensemble His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts for this programme of Venetian polychoral repertoire, given in the spectacular surroundings of the twelfth century Temple Church.

This concert is given as part of the Temple Music Foundation Concert Series. Tickets £20, £15, £10.

SEA SYMPHONY 7.30 pm, SATURDAY 8 APRIL 2017 This year’s Easter concert will be held on Saturday 8 April at St John’s, Smith Square. In a hugely ambitious programme, Upper Sixth student Owen Saldahna will be the soloist in a performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, before the combined forces of the Vaughan’s choirs and The Cantus Ensemble perform Vaughan Williams’ mighty A Sea Symphony.

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street The Vaughan first performed Stephen Sondheim’s dark, comic masterpiece in 2010 . Join us this Summer as once again the Demon Barber of Fleet Street returns to London as a convict from Australia seeking revenge against those who separated him from his wife and child. Monday – Wednesday, 17-19 July 2017. Tickets £10 (concessions half price).


The Schola Cantorum continues it busy liturgical and concert schedule this year with a number of significant events in 2016-17. The Schola will continue its close relationship with Westminster Cathedral, singing for the 6 pm Vigil Mass on 15 October, 21 January, 18 March, 20 May and 1 July. Alongside the performances of Handel’s Messiah and Festa Veneziana the choir will also give concerts on 13 October at Haileybury College in Hertford for the military charity The Army Benevolent Fund and on 26 January at St Peter’s, Eaton Square, for Aid to the Church in Need. The choir will sing Evensong at Winchester Cathedral (28 September), at Holy Trinity, Sloane Square (Remembrance Sunday, 13 November) and at Westminster Abbey (28 March). In June the Schola trebles will sing the first performance of a new song cycle by Luke Styles and Alan McKendrick at the Aldeburgh Festival. In February they will give the first performance of the winning entry in the Music Education Expo composing competition at Olympia. Boys from the Schola will sing in English National Opera’s production of Tosca in the Michaelmas Term and in the Royal Opera House’s production of Turandot in July 2017.


Other Events There will be two Early Evening Recitals in the Michaelmas Term, at 6 pm on Wednesday 5 October and Wednesday 9 November. The Sixth Form Choir will sing Evensong at Selwyn College, Cambridge on Thursday 3 November and Mass at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday 26 November. Concert Band and Big Band will compete in the National Concert Band Festival on Sunday 4 December.

The Lower School Chamber Music Competition will at 6 pm on Wednesday 14 June. There will be a Junior Concert at 6 pm on Wednesday 25 May. The Associated Board Grade Exams will be held on Saturday 3 December, 1 April & 25 June.
