WELCOME Join us as a spirit of fun and excitement fills the halls of Cape Henry Collegiate over the summer months. Campers ages 3-17 will enjoy every aspect of Cape Henry’s beautiful campus, including a passionate teaching staff, high-tech classrooms, a full-service cafeteria, a state-of-the-art outdoor playground, and other fantastic facilities that will make your summer one to remember! Summer will be here before you know it, and we are excited about the 2020 offerings. We welcome back our favorite, most time-tested camps, and we are thrilled to introduce exciting new programs to Summer at the Cape. Offerings abound in the arts, academics, athletics, sciences, and many different specialty camps that are sure to ignite your interest. Our programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to develop their talents, acquire new skills and knowledge, explore new interests, and, most importantly, have fun during their summer vacation! Cape Henry Collegiate is the largest independent, college-preparatory school in Virginia Beach. We rests on a 30-acre campus just minutes from the Oceanfront. With a 10-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio, an emphasis is placed on the core values of community, opportunity, scholarship, and integrity. Cape Henry offers a nationally recognized global studies program, rigorous and well-rounded academic program, fantastic offerings in visual and performing arts, competitive athletics program, financial aid, and transportation.

SUMMER PROGRAMS OFFICE

The Lower School Office will serve as the Summer Programs Office From June to early August. The Summer Program’s direct dial number is (757) 963-8252 from June 1 - August 7. Prior to June 1, please contact the Director of Auxiliary Programs at tylerfaubert@capehenry.org or (757) 963-8241 with questions.

REGISTRATION

Early registration is encouraged! Camp sizes are limited. Registration payment must be paid in full no later than one week prior to participation in Summer at the Cape. You must register and pay for a full week of camp even if the child is not there the entire week. Your child is not considered registered for a camp unless full payment is completed. When registration payment is not received one week prior to the program’s start date, Cape Henry Collegiate reserves the right to remove a camper from a Summer program roster. If registering within one week of the program’s start date, payment must be completed upon registration. Your payment must be made at least one week in advance in order to determine if enrollment is sufficient. A payment plan may be established if requested in writing more than one week prior to the start of the program in which the camper is enrolled. Registration must be completed online. Phoned or faxed registration will not be accepted. CAMP CANCELLATIONS

Cape Henry Collegiate reserves the right to modify or cancel any summer program with insufficient enrollment. All camps must meet minimum enrollment numbers no later than one week prior to the respective program’s start date to proceed. If the Summer Programs Office cancels a program, a full refund will be given or may be applied to another camp.

ABSENCE NOTIFICATION

If your camper is going to be absent, please call and leave a voicemail message at (757) 963-8252. Please do not forget to include the date of the absence, your child’s name, and the specific camp in which he or she is enrolled.


REFUNDS, TRANSFERS, AND WITHDRAWALS

A refund will only be permitted if requested in writing more than one week prior to the start of the session in which the camper is enrolled. Fifteen percent (15%) of the camp fee is nonrefundable within one week of the beginning of the session. Campers withdrawn less than three days prior to the start of camp are responsible for the full tuition. Transfers are permissible up to two weeks prior to the start of camp. There are no prorated fees or refunds for campers arriving after the beginning of the session, leaving before its completion, or missing any time during camp.

HEALTH FORM

In accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia law, each camper must provide Cape Henry Collegiate with a copy of the health form MCH-213G before the first day of their respective camp. The completed MCH-213G must include documentation of all ageappropriate immunizations and a physical examination. All documents must include the date of the physical exam, and the examining physician must sign the immunization form. This health form is required for enrollment in all independent and public schools. Children ages five and under are required to have the MCH-213G on file, and it must be dated within one year before the camp start date. Cape Henry Collegiate students do not need to submit this form for Summer Programs since it is already on file.

REQUIRED SOCIAL SERVICES PAPERWORK

The Virginia Department of Social Services licenses Summer at the Cape specialty and day camps, as well as, Extended School Day Program (ESDP). In accordance with the Social Services policy, we are required to document the identity and age of all children enrolled in these programs. Proof of your child’s identity may include a birth certificate or a birth registration card. If your child is not currently an enrolled student at Cape Henry Collegiate, you will need to bring this documentation to the School before the start of camp. Athletic camps are not licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services and do not require proof of birth or Virginia School Health Entrance forms.

MEDICAL

There will be a Camp Nurse on campus from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital (SVBGH) is one mile from Cape Henry’s campus. Severe emergencies requiring immediate medical attention will be taken to SVBGH either by car or ambulance. If a camper takes medication, a separate form will be sent to the parent for specific instructions and a doctor’s authorization. This form and the medication must be given to either the Director of Auxiliary Programs or the Camp Nurse by the parent/guardian of the camper.

LUNCH

Lunch in the state of the art Café Dolphin is included in all full-day camps unless otherwise noted. If lunch is not included with the camp, you may purchase lunch for $30 per week. Students participating in morning and afternoon camps will have lunch provided by Cape Henry Collegiate. Please notify shamainewilliams@capehenry.org of any food allergies.

FOOD ALLERGIES

Cape Henry Collegiate cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment for students with severe allergies and is not a food allergen-free school. Our goal is to minimize the exposure risks to allergens posing a threat to students and educating the community about their needs. We ask all families to please avoid packing snacks with peanuts and tree nuts in the ingredients. Please contact shamainewilliams@capehenry.org for any food allergies.

SPECIAL PICK-UP DURING CAMP HOURS

Any child leaving camp during camp hours must be picked up in the Lower School Office by a parent, guardian, or family member. Advance notice is much appreciated. All Day Camps are led by full-time teachers at Cape Henry Collegiate or teachers from Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Each teacher has multiple years of experience within our school community. All full-day campers receive a full-service, well-balanced lunch from the newly renovated Café Dolphin, and all full- and half-day campers receive a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack and drink. Our Summer at the Cape Day Camps are licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services.

SUMMER LEARNING: Day campers spend time each day on specific weekly themes, digging into age-appropriate topics like America’s National Parks, the Natural Wonders of the World, outdoor adventure and camping, American History, Mystery, Lifecycles and more. Twice a week campers will immerse themselves in Cape Henry’s science labs, working on experiments and exercises to learn and test the theme of the week. In addition to these wonderful and creative topics, students will spend time with age-appropriate reading, writing, and math while having the opportunity to work on summer academic assignments for the upcoming school year. EXERCISE AND FUN: Campers take part in daily free play and structured activities within all of Cape Henry’s fantastic facilities. Cape Henry boasts a spacious, air-conditioned field house with P.E. equipment and supplies for every game and activity. A turf field and multiple grass athletic fields host countless outdoor games, and a state-of-the-art playground caters to the imagination of all age groups. SWIMMING: Partnered with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation, Day Camp groups travel via bus to the Great Neck Recreation Center (Dolphins and Sharks) and to Seatack Recreation Center (Little Dolphins and Sandfiddlers) on Tuesday and Thursday for age-appropriate swim lessons. Lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified swim instructors while supervised by American Red Cross certified lifeguards. The swim curriculum is developed and taught by the aquatic staff of Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation. Campers travel to and from swim lessons with their lead teachers, and their lead teachers remain poolside throughout each swim lesson.

DAY CAMPS FIELD TRIPS: Campers take part in a unique field trip each week of the summer. Join us as we go bowling at Pinboy’s, visit the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, jump around at the indoor Bounce House facility, travel to our local state parks, enjoy a hike in the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, and more. These fun-filled experiences take the campers off-campus to some of the area’s most desirable locations. Day Camp teachers and staff members accompany the students on these fully supervised trips. LITTLE DOLPHINS DAY CAMP: AGES 3 AND 4 (PREKINDERGARTEN)

Immerse your child in the Little Dolphin’s weekly fun! This hands-on, interactive, and engaging program will provide up to 10 weeks of fun learning for your child. Your child will spend the weeks learning about the Great Outdoors, Lifecycles of plants and animals, Healthy Living, and so much more! Avoid the Summer Slide with daily learning designed to build on the year’s studies. SANDFIDDLERS DAY CAMP: AGES 5 AND 6 (RISING KINDERGARTEN - GRADE 1)

Join an exceptional lineup of educators dedicated to engaging and hands-on lessons, including collaborative learning, interactive curriculum, as well as STEM and STEAM integrated into daily learning. Immerse yourself in the fun and exciting themes including Virginia’s State Parks, Recycling, Life Cycles, and much more! Students will avoid the Summer Slide with lessons designed to build on the year’s learning! DOLPHINS DAY CAMP: AGES 7 AND 8 (RISING GRADES 2 AND 3)

Avoid the Summer Slide with a fun, engaging program! Integrate STEM and STEAM with collaborative, hands-on lessons each week. With weekly themes sure to excite, join the Dolphins for a summer full of fun learning, including the Great Outdoors, Composting, Lifecycles, engineering terrariums, benefits of healthy living, and much more! Students are encouraged to bring summer work to complete before the upcoming school year. SHARKS DAY CAMP: AGES 9 - 11 (RISING GRADES 4 - 6)

Spend your Summer with Cape Henry Collegiate’s engaging educators, experiencing the thrills of the Natural Wonders of the World, The Great Outdoors, Camping, exciting American History, and use your newfound forensic skills to solve live-action mysteries. Do not miss out on this one-of-a-kind program designed to avoid the Summer Slide while learning about new and exciting themes each week and integrate a collaborative experience into the world of STEM and STEAM! Students are encouraged to bring summer work to complete before the upcoming school year.

BEFORE- AND AFTER-CAMP CARE PROGRAM

This program is a service provided for AGES parents who require extended care for Rising Prekindergarten - Grade 5 children, rising Prekindergarten through Grade 5, before and after regular Summer T U I T I O N Program hours. The exceptional staff plans $100 per week 7:30-9:00 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. outdoor play, craft projects, and much more $50 per week 7 : 3 0 - 9 : 0 0 a . m . each day. Before and After Care is available for the duration of our Summer at the Cape $65 per week 3 : 3 0 - 5 : 3 0 p . m . schedule, beginning on Monday, June 1 and ending on Friday, August 7. An afternoon snack is provided for the campers. All children must be toilet trained. Before-Camp care will begin at 7:30 a.m. and conclude at the start of camp at 9:00 a.m., where our staff will direct campers to the correct camps. 2D/3D DESIGN AND ENGINEERING Join Mr. Jonathan Torch for this brand new camp where students will learn how to model digitally in two and three dimensions. Using new modeling skills, students will make their designs come to life with a 3D printer and laser cutter. Several design competitions will take place throughout the week! This camp will be hands-on, digitally oriented, and push campers to collaborate in teams. Come get your STEM on at CHC this summer!

AMERICAN GIRL DOLL CAMP Do you love your doll and spend time dreaming of new ways to style and accessorize? Do you and your friends dream up new worlds with your dolls, creating tea parties, going to the beach, or catching the great new movie in the theaters? If so, this camp is for you. Make accessories, read stories, and learn all about the history of American Girl dolls. In this camp, you will design and build your own dollhouse using boxes and reclaimed materials, and you will find new, inventive ways to make accessories and enhance your doll’s fashion. BABYSITTING Would you like to become a certified babysitter? An instructor from CPR Anywhere! will instruct boys and girls ages 9 to 14 in the skills of being a confident sitter. This three-day camp will instruct campers in childcare skills, including feeding and bathing a baby, changing a diaper, infant and child CPR, basic first aid, talking to potential clients, and much more. In the end, you will be awarded a certificate and card that you can show to prove you are a certified babysitter! Maximum of 15 campers at each session–so sign up early!

BLACK ROCKET CAMPS BLACK ROCKET: MINECRAFT MODDERS Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students must own a Java version of Minecraft to access their projects at home. For curious young minds who want to take the first steps into the world of programming. Student explorers will use their creativity to solve a series of web-based coding challenges. Each lesson builds fluency in essential digital skills needed for the future. At the end of the class, students will receive access to the interactive learning platform to continue their coding journey at home.​Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

BLACK ROCKET: LEGO FILMS AND STOP ACTION Make your LEGOs come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or LEGOs and create a short film with your friends. Students will need to bring in LEGOs and/or action figures from home, but all other equipment is provided. BLACK ROCKET: LEGO VIDEO GAMES Combine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and Video Games! Students will create their own LEGO characters and adventures in an interactive 2D Video Game. Everyone is welcome in this one-of-a-kind class. At the end of the program, every student will have a finished LEGO Video Game that can be shared with friends and family through a password protected Black Rocket website. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. BLACK ROCKET: ROCKET KART RACERS—DESIGN A MARIO CART-STYLE GAME On your marks, get set, create! Blast off in making your first 3D Mario Kart® and Crash Team Racing® style game! Design your own tracks and customize your karts and characters. Using a professional 3D game development software, students will combine their creations into their own kart racing game that they can play with friends and family at home. Students can participate in eSports League races against other schools across the country with a chance to have their tracks featured in the Black Rocket master build of the game! BLACK ROCKET: 3D GAME DESIGN WITH UNITY Are you ready to take your game design skills to another level? With Unity, an industry-grade design software, aspiring game designers will learn level editing, 3D modeling, impactful gameplay creation, as well as how to utilize scripts and variables. ATHLETIC DOLPHIN BOWLING CAMP

The Dolphin Bowling Camp will teach the fundamentals of bowling from the traditional approach and swing to the release. Students will learn how to align themselves properly to hit their target, how to keep score, and the proper lane courtesy. Bowling teaches the life skills of teamwork and a stable mindset. This is great for introverted children. It is also one of the few sports that is an individual as well as team orientated sport. The coaching staff is co-coached by bronze and silver level coaches both with experience in collegiate bowling. Coaches include members of an NAIA collegiate bowling program as well as an NCAA D1 bowler and Alumni of Cape Henry. Bowling equipment is provided in the cost and all skill levels are welcome.

Lacrosse is the fastest-growing sport in the country at the youth and high school levels; don’t miss out on the action-packed fun the sport offers. The camp is run by Cape Henry Varsity Boys Lacrosse Head Coach and former UVA Men’s Lacrosse Midfielder, Mr. Joe Thompson, along with current and former CHC players, all of whom have a passion for the game. Our philosophy is that to love the game, you must respect your competition and have fun playing. The focus of the camp is to learn fundamental skills while enjoying the excitement of the game and to benefit from the camaraderie and lessons that lacrosse offers. DODGEBALL Join us for our ultra-popular program that includes several crazy, fun versions of the game dodgeball! The emphasis is on fun, teamwork, and exercise. DOLPHIN ALL-STAR FIELD HOCKEY CAMP Coaches will focus on fundamentals and small number situations, full field games, and mix in plenty of fun. Campers will be grouped based on age and ability. Cape Henry’s state-of-the-art turf complex provides a true playing surface for field hockey. Plenty of air-conditioned indoor space means that camp will never be rained out or shortened due to a high heat index or poor air quality. The air-conditioned gymnasium provides an opportunity for campers to learn the indoor game as well as the outdoor game–it’s like two camps in one! Recently, Camp Director, Mrs. Kate Barber Kinnear, completed her first season as Cape Henry’s Varsity Head Coach. In her first season, she led her team to a State Tournament Championship, earned TCIS Tournament Championship, and TCIS Coach of the Year honors. Coach Kinnear was a long-time member of the USA Field Hockey Program and Captain of the 2008 Olympic team. Don’t miss this phenomenal field hockey opportunity!

The Cape Henry Collegiate Tennis program is excited to offer the Dolphin Tennis Academy with PTR-certified Head Coach Diane Deaton. During the tennis sessions, beginner and novice campers will learn the proper way to hold and swing a racquet, as well as basic ball drills and games. Advanced tennis players will work on strategy, court positioning, and shot selection, and they will be matched up with camp staff who are current or former high school or college players. ATHLETIC THE 30TH ANNUAL VIRGINIA ALL-STAR SOCCER CAMP The longest-running and most enjoyable coed soccer camp in Virginia Beach returns for its 30th year of camp instruction. We take great pride in offering the best soccer camp experience in Hampton Roads. Our facilities include four plush green soccer fields, six air-conditioned courts for indoor soccer, an air-conditioned auditorium with a large-screen projection for rest and film sessions, and a spacious cafeteria serving hot lunch daily. Our camp staff is comprised of highly trained professional, college, and high school players and coaches who are positive role models and understand our camp philosophy of learning the game of soccer in a clean, safe, and enjoyable atmosphere. Our staff prides itself on creating positive and long-lasting relationships with campers and parents. From the beginning player to the advanced player, the curriculum is designed to teach skills and strategies used at the individual and team levels. Each day begins with fundamental instruction and follows a planned sequence of activities that builds confidence and enthusiasm for the game of soccer. DRIVER’S EDUCATION: CLASSROOM (TWO WEEKS) This course is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of the fundamentals of driving and to foster responsible attitudes and driving behaviors. Course content follows the Virginia State Board of Education, which includes linking visual skills, space management, and balanced vehicle movements to risk-reducing driving strategies. Significant attention is given to risk awareness, driver alertness, and responsible actions relative to occupant protection devices, positive interactions with other roadway users, and the physical and psychological conditions that affect driver performance. Students will use knowledge, processes, and skills learned in driver education to help them become competent users of the highway transportation system. Successful completion of this course provides the student with a Certificate of Completion in Classroom Driver Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

ACADEMIC LOWER SCHOOL SUMMER ACADEMIC WORKSHOPS (TWO WEEKS) Get prepared for the new school year by diving into reading/writing and mathematics. The “Reading/Writing Workshop” helps students become power readers and writers, increasing their phonetic skills, comprehension strategies, and writing abilities. Students respond to reading through a variety of creative channels including verbal, written, and hands-on activities. Diverse reading selections from the CHC Summer Reading Lists and other literary choices ensure an enjoyable and stimulating reading performance. In addition, teachers provide instruction on organizing and writing paragraphs, proofreading and editing written work, and the reinforcement of grammar and punctuation rules. Students choose topics of their own interest and imagination to enjoy creative and expressive writing. The “Math Workshop” uses a multi-sensory, hands-on approach, making math add up to fun. Students learn math concepts and problem-solving skills with meaningful connections that illustrate the value of mathematics to their world. The instruction and reinforcement of activities will concentrate on preparing students for the rigors of the mathematics curriculum for the coming year. The students split their time between the two blocks on a daily basis and will have the opportunity to work on their required summer reading, writing, and math assignments.

UPPER SCHOOL HEALTH This program is focused on exploring the many facets of leading a fulfilling, healthy, and productive lifestyle. At this exciting, intense, and difficult stage of life, we will learn and discuss serious social, emotional, physical and societal concerns. Topics include illegal substances, growth and development, physical activity, nutrition, preventing violence and abuse, and mental and emotional development. Students will also complete the American Heart Association’s curriculum for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Classroom Health sessions run from 8:00 a.m. - noon on Monday through Friday of each week, and office hours are available from noon - 1:00 p.m. for extra help.
