Project: Cape Henry – A Collaborative Effort Whether it is the administration and Board diligently working to update our Strategic Plan, the Prekindergarten class helping with the release of beautiful Monarch butterflies, or the wrestling team coming together to win its first-ever TCIS title, accomplishments are what make education fun, make it work, and make it so worthwhile. In education, a designed project is an undertaking that requires a concerted effort and extensive planning. It is a task usually undertaken by a group of individuals with a similar objective. They have a scheme, blueprint, design, game plan, idea, or goal they want to complete. Together they work to create a plan for making things happen, for succeeding in accomplishing their goal, thus creating excellence on campus. We all understand the term “project” when it is used in conjunction with something like the annual Science Fair, but when thought about in the true sense of the word, every unit of study at every grade level, every undertaking of every club and organization on campus can be thought of as a project. The campaign to build the new Sparks Science and Technology Center was a project, a collaborative effort, one that involved the entire CHCS community. As you read through this issue of Soundings, you will see how that very important project has allowed for increased meaningful units of study throughout the curriculum. You will also see how our parent volunteers relentlessly take on one project after another – from the Grand Auction to the Noodle Network to the new Sports Madness, all of which enhance the Cape Henry experience we provide for our children. The Annual Giving Campaign and the new Young Alumni Club are also projects with a worthwhile goal - providing support for our students and faculty. All of these efforts – large and small – come together to help us complete the most important project of them all, the ultimate goal of placing morally responsible and educated citizens into post secondary education and into society.

The Sparks Science and Technology Center Allows More Academic Freedom Our first five months in the new Sparks Science and Technology Center have been busy and exciting. After unpacking all of the new equipment, the science teachers started settling into their new “clabs,” a combination classroom and lab space. Everyone loves the size of the new rooms, and the fully equipped prep areas are a real boon. With a few minor tweaks, the physical plant is just what the science faculty had envisioned when the planning started over two years ago. Construction of the building went so smoothly that we were able to move into the new classrooms earlier than expected, and we have already accomplished a great deal: • A seismograph monitoring station was set up outside the Earth Science classroom, and students have already had the opportunity to analyze the data from several earthquake events. • The Middle School Robotics Club won first place for their presentation at the regional FIRST Lego League competition. • Students enrolled in an independent-study course are using the new Project Room to design and build their own device for collecting solar energy and using it to power an AC appliance. • To take full advantage of the new large-format clab, the entire Ninth Grade Biology class has been redesigned around a studentcentered, inquiry-based approach, one in which students learn by doing in a hands-on environment. • Arrangements were made for a medical examiner from the City of Virginia Beach to give a presentation to students from the BioTech and Anatomy and Physiology classes. • Nobel Laureate Dr. Anthony Leggett was the first esteemed guest lecturer in the Dreyfus Family Auditorium. His talk on the quantum entanglement of photons was as inspirational as it was challenging. As we move into the second half of the year, we have even more exciting things planned: • The Upper School Robotics Club built a ring-sorting robot that they entered in the FIRST Tech Challenge in February. They have also begun planning a remote-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) for the Mid-Atlantic Regional MATE ROV Building Competition, sponsored by the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center. • The All-School Science Extravaganza took place on March 26. In addition to exhibiting students’ science projects from all three divisions, this year’s event included a special “Fractured Physics” presentation from the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh. • The Tidewater Teachers of Physics will hold the annual Tidewater Physics Olympics at Cape Henry on April 26, and Cape Henry is hoping to become a permanent home for this annual event. • Plans are underway to host a lecture by David Powars of the U.S. Geological Survey. Dr. Powars will describe the research leading to the discovery that an asteroid that struck the Earth 35 million years ago formed the Chesapeake Bay Impact crater, which affects the topography, drainage, and groundwater resources of the Tidewater Area to this day. • Several new science and technology-centered offerings are being explored for the 2008 Summer Programs, including a space-themed course and ground-based flight training for Upper School students. Everyone in the school community appreciates what a fantastic resource The Sparks Science and Technology Center is for Cape Henry. In fact, the members of the Science Department are already looking forward to incorporating even bigger and more ambitious projects into their curricula next year!

Winter concerts, holiday events and gatherings, and special units of study make the winter trimester a unique one. The Upper School took a moment to be reminded of the importance of academic integrity by re-signing the honor card. The event was simulcast in both the Dreyfus Family Auditorium for Ninth and Tenth Grades and in The Perry Family Auditorium for the Eleventh and Twelfth Grades.

Dr. Joel H. Fish, Director of The Center For Sports Psychology and author of 101 Ways To Be A Terrific Sports Parent, held a series of workshops for Middle and Upper School students, sports team captains, coaches, faculty, and finally, in the evening, a program for athletes and their parents. There were feature stories in The Virginian-Pilot and on WVEC TV-13. Joe Flanagan of WVEC TV-13 remarked that he was very impressed after his interview with Dr. Fish.

"Puppy Love" conducted in the Lower School during the month of February, involved many cross-curriculum projects related to dogs: research of favorite breeds; bulletin boards using photos of students and their pets; learning about the evolution from “Wolf to Woof,” etc. Families dropped off food and supplies for the local SPCA at an elaborate display in The Rashkind Family Foundation Entrance.

CAPE HENRY PROJECTS HIT THE PAPER

All stories and photographs copyright ©, The Virginian-Pilot. Reprinted with permission. Inspired by The Mitten Tree, a book by Candace Christiansen, Lower School students learned about “community.” Cape Henry’s own “Mitten Tree” was erected for students to bring in mittens to hang upon the tree every morning. Later, the mittens were donated to various organizations that sponsor less fortunate families. A feature article appeared in The Virginian-Pilot.

SUED (Students United to Embrace Diversity) began a project called “S-4: Stop Saying Stupid Stuff” this trimester. The students encouraged and challenged fellow students to stop using inappropriate words about race, gender, sexuality, etc. and handed out buttons that said “S-4 Campaign.” They also attracted a feature article in The Virginian-Pilot.

Science teacher Debra Duffy goes over information gathered on the school’s new seismic station with students Laila Serpe and John Bernhardt. "The equipment picks up Richter scale readings of 7 or higher," Duffy said. The science department’s new seismic observatory picked up surface waves from a 7.4 earthquake occurring in the Martinique region and students also observed other “events” - some with earthquake signatures and others resembling sonic booms. This project also attracted the attention of the local press with a feature story in The Virginian-Pilot.

Nexus News: Traveling to New Heights

This Spring Break, 15 seniors traveled to see the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India for his Long Life Puja lecture, and then continued their Buddhist education in Bhutan where they trekked for three days in the Himalayas. In June, students will study French in Martinique, science in the Galapagos, Spanish in Marbella, Spain, community service in Mexico with the Surf and Serve program, and in the fall, our chorus program will compete in the Venice International Chorus Festival. It is exactly these kinds of unique programs that set Cape Henry apart from most of the nation. But to tell you the great itineraries and opportunities does not go to the main point of these programs which is to affect students in a way that the classroom can not. While in Tanzania last year, after climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro for

Cape Henry compares favorably to the University of Virginia, Tufts University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Princeton University, and it surpasses Harvard University by an amazing 20 percentage points – according to International Education Exchange statistics on percentage of students who graduate with international experience. Cape Henry’s Class of 2007 had a 48% participation rate in Nexus which ties them with Stanford University. In an effort to properly benchmark with our independent school peers across that nation, Cape Henry co-founded, in coordination with the National Association of Independent Schools, the first Global Education Benchmark group. The group includes such prestigious schools as Exeter, Andover, and Charlotte Country Day. This honor places Cape Henry Collegiate in the top tier of global education in the nation. Cape Henry has also formed a partnership with the Schooner Virginia to provide our students marine biology and maritime education in the West Indies. Our first program, slated for Spring Break 2009, will take our students on the elite sailing ship from St. Thomas, from the British Virgin Islands, to Antigua and Dominica while they study.

two days, a student turned to a sponsor on the bus in tears. She had just witnessed a young child kneeling to drink from a puddle in the road. In Cuba, a student was sobbing, “Those kids are starving to death.” In Cambodia, after walking through protruding bones from the ground in the Killing Fields, a student asked, “Why did we let this happen?” This is what Nexus does for our students: it takes them into the world and bluntly exposes them to the realities of life for millions. Accomplishing this task is not easy, but it is what sets Cape Henry apart, and there are no statistics that can be used to benchmark that. Seniors Carter Gibson, Brittaney Michielsens, Jeff Brooks, and Guy Carmeli had feature articles published about Bhutan in the 757 section of The Virginian-Pilot’s Daily Break. Students on this year’s trip to Bhutan also participated in a The Virginian-Pilot’s online blog while traveling. Below is a sampling of one of the articles that appeared in the newspaper.

A TRUE IMMERSION IN CULTURE

Cape Henry students experience life in remote Himalayan nation

By Carter Gibson, Teen Correspondent THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT • February 29, 2008

Working at a local coffee shop, I started a conversation with a customer about my upcoming trip to India and Bhutan. His response was expected: "Where's Bhutan? Is that a city?" Actually, it's a small Buddhist nation in the Himalayas. To have the opportunity to travel to a place so remote as a high school senior is rare. To preserve its culture, Bhutan only lets in a few thousand visitors a year, and there couldn't be a better time to go - in March, Bhutan will hold its first free-and-fair democratic elections to kick start its new government. As if that wasn't exciting enough, we will be in Dharamsala, India, for the Dalai Lama's spring lectures. The time's ripe to truly experience foreign culture. Some schools may send their students to places like these, where they stay in nice hotels with beautiful bathrooms and eat American food, but through the Nexus program at Cape Henry Collegiate School in Virginia Beach, we'll immerse ourselves in another culture. Over the next two weeks, we will meet (yes, meet) the Dalai Lama, speak to the chief jus-

tice of Bhutan and, what I am most anticipating, hike for four days through the Himalayas, stopping occasionally at villages, sleeping in tents and using bushes as restrooms. We also have the rare opportunity to visit some of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in the world and visit people who have likely never seen an American, or a digital camera, or even a cell phone. Stepping back in time doesn't begin to describe the unique nature of our experience. And a unique experience it promises to be. This will be an experience without training wheels. There will be no rope to hold on to at 15,000 feet above sea level; no McDonald's or shopping malls, cars or streets. I believe this is the only kind of trip worth taking - one that lacks a nice woman on a loudspeaker as you "tour" a country in a passenger bus, trying to understand a culture through a glass barrier with an occasional museum stop. Yeah, it's going to be rough, but it's well worth it to be able to remove ourselves from behind the looking glass and live like the people we're visiting. This is not a study-abroad trip - this is a study-abroad experience. Carter Gibson, a senior at Cape Henry Collegiate School in Virginia Beach. The following Upper School choral students represented CHCS at the 2008 All-District Chorus Event in February: Brittany Agrillo, Lara Barbir, Amy Bennis, Kalan Brehm, Rachel Cross, Katie Heilig, Kristin Hopkins, Jamie Mandell, Brooke Stellmach, Kelly Vance, Kristen Vretakis, and Paige Wheeler. In January, the Upper School Orchestra was treated to a rare occasion of the string section of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra performing works for string orchestra only. This was of particular interest to the orchestra, since they have performed themselves, one of the works on the program. Mrs. Charlotte Dettwiler-Carr arranged for the nationally famous Maia String Quartet to not only perform for our Upper School Orchestra students, but also to conduct a hands-on master class with the Cape Henry String Quartet. Participants and observers were awe inspired by the extraordinary level of musicianship.

Please congratulate the following Upper School students for placing in District Band: Nathaniel Kerbin (1st trumpet, Symphonic Band); Raj Dhillon (4th trumpet, Symphonic Band); Bryan Mytelka (1st tuba, Concert Band); and Ryan Zaki (alternate clarinet).

Mr. Jimmy Dragas and Mrs. Carol Kerbin joined Emily Burke, Barrett Jacobson, Jimmy Bertolino and Jacob Green for the 8th Annual Regional Mathematics Contest at Christopher Newport University. The contest included an individual round and a team round. Out of approximately 20 teams, Cape Henry ranked fifth. Our students were the top-ranked independent school. The Upper School Robotics Team won the “Amaze” award held the last week in February at the FIRST Tech Championship at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata, Maryland. The Amaze award is given at the judge’s discretion to a team “whose unique efforts, performance, or dynamics merit recognition.” When judges awarded this prize to Cape Henry’s Upper School Robotics Team (TeCHCS), they cited the team’s unique and ambitious robot design, which the judges compared to a robot from the movie Transformers, and for the initiative shown by TeCHCS captain Maddy Woodson in pulling together this first-year team.

SCHOOL NEWS

Winter Athletic Report The 2007-2008 Cape Henry Collegiate Winter Season was filled with more history making athletic accomplishments. Beginning in early November and ending in late February, the winter season is the lengthiest of the three. But, February brought a mixed bag of excitement that seemed to be right on time. As the schedules come to an end, the enthusiasm, energy, and sportsmanship seemed to peak. It all starts and ends with the positive sideline energy and breathtaking halftime routines of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Head Coach Julie Levine, fostered a packed squad of polished athletes. Seniors Addie Law, Madison Marchbank, Lara Barbir, and Josh Collingsworth finished their illustrious careers with a third place finish in the Cape Henry-hosted TCIS Cheerleading Championship. Absolutely nothing lacks with this group, as they always leave a lasting impression on fans and spectators. They are a complete package of professionalism and athleticism! First-year coach Ken Spell was given the task of rebuilding and laying a solid foundation for the Varsity Girls Basketball Program. He and Assistant Coach Dr. Ted Smith accomplished this and then some. The nonstop tenacity and guidance of one of the School’s best ever female athletes, Mary Flowers, and the leadership of Kathryn Van Deveer and post presence of Sheanita Bryant combined to lead the future of girls basketball at Cape Henry Collegiate in the right direction. As this team entered the gym after their last game of the season, donning their “Building a Foundation” T-shirts, it was apparent that this program is headed in an exciting direction. 2008 TCIS Varsity Wrestling Champions and TCIS Coach Of The Year, Rocco Mansueto Guess what? Cape Henry Wrestling is on the map, as well it should be. They were a solid team from the start. And again, the timing was perfect due to agreeing in the spring of 2007 to host the VISAA Wrestling Tournament. It was a perfect conclusion to celebrate the success of many. Coach Mansueto and Assistant Coach Josh Thompson steered a determined collection of allaround athletes into a peril of fitness and seasoned wrestlers. Captains Drew Mason and Gabe Bain get credit for leading the Cape Henry Wrestling Team to the School’s first-ever conference championship. TCIS Champions Jazz Rozier, Sam Law, Nic Mirenda, and Gabe Bain will hang a banner that will make many of us smile as we look back on a very special season. The 2008 Wrestling Team had Will Mason, Scott Cunningham, Jazz Rozier, Sam Law, Henri Noordanus and Drew Mason finish in the top eight in the State, and top five to qualify for the National Prep Tournament. Drew Mason and Jazz Rozier captured three wins at the national level, highlighting a Cape Henry Collegiate Wrestling Program, that has truly arrived!

17 www.capehenryCOLLEGIATE.org

If you have never had the pleasure of watching our Varsity Coed Swim Team compete, please mark your calendars next winter. Not only does this group continue to improve season after season, under Coach Wes Neubeck’s guidance, but their display of team unity and representation of the School is phenomenal. Cape Henry Collegiate hosted two swim meets this past winter, and this team cannot be complimented enough on being a TEAM! Captains Robert Knuth and Kelly Zoretic led their respective teams to one of the best in recent years. The boys swim team placed third at the TCIS meet after being ranked seventh in a preseason TCIS poll. In a meet where every event had 16 scored swimmers, a much smaller Cape Henry team prevailed ahead of fourth place finisher Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. Keegan McLaughlin, just a secondyear swimmer, led the charge with a third place finish in the 200M free and a second place finish in the 500M free. Robert Knuth finished second in the 100M backstroke and John Farley finished second in the 100M fly. The Varsity Girls Swim Team was limited with only five swimmers at the TCIS Meet and finished in eighth place. However, despite the eighth place finish, Cape Henry scored in the top 10 in many events. Eighth grader Addie Cooper led the Dolphins charge with a personal best in the 100M freestyle, which was a 2.5 second personal drop in that event. As a result, Cooper took eighth place overall. The girls qualified for the 400M free relay behind the swims of Kelly Zoretic, Kelli Morrissey, Jennifer Lee, and Addie Cooper. Once again, an exceptional collection of talent on this very youthful Varsity Swim Team who will leave their mark on the varsity swim record books.

2008 TCIS Varsity Boys Basketball Champions No one saw this one coming as the team endured two season ending injuires in starters Damiane Ryans and Dylan Shiflett prior to tournament play. But, Captain Darrian Freeman seemed to tighten up his shoelaces and lead his team to one of the best conference championships in the School's history. TCIS Coach of the Year, Larry Ward, assisted by Bob Veith and Dwight Freeman, will definitely cherish this banner in a very special way. Terrell Allen, Rex Mahoney, Cole Conrad, and the absolute brilliant play of Chris Astorga in the TCIS Semifinals and Finals will always be remembered as one of the best basketball runs in an already stellar basketball history! The Dolphins finished the season with an impressive 24-7 record after advancing to the Division II State Semifinals and eventually falling to the number-one-ranked Miller School. The “Comeback Kids” rode a wave of excitement down the stretch and will hang a banner to signify a season to remember. Congratulations to all our Junior Varsity and Middle School Winter Teams led by Coaches Joe Harvich, Alisha Stailey, Scott Gray, Dave Cameron, Ed Faubert, Kevin DeJesus, Richard Plank, Missy Cotter-Smasal, Bob Sully, Julie Levine, and Mary Mulvey. Coach Faubert’s Seveth Grade Boys Basketball won the 2008 Middle School League Tournament with an exciting Tournament Final win over Norfolk Academy! With so many underclasmen participating at the JV and Middle School level in a variety of athletic programs, the future of Dolphin Athletics has an impressive perspective. To summarize the 2007-2008 Winter Athletic Season based on wins alone would not give this season justice. The true sportsmanship represented by our winter teams is something to note: Varsity Wrestling receiving the Team Sportsmanship Award for the VISAA State Wrestling Tournament; the Varsity Boys Basketball Team agreeing to not only allow an injured opponent to play, but also to score on his Senior Night; the Varsity Girls Basketball Team always taking the high road, regardless of the score; the Varsity Cheerleading Squad staying on point in the heat of competition; and the Varsity Swim Team – the epitome of the spirit of interscholastic competition. For all of these reasons and more, Cape Henry finished higher in sportsmanship votes in the TCIS than we have in a very long time. There are many reasons to be proud and many things to appreciate in the representation of Cape Henry Collegiate School!

Notes from the Alumni Director As I sit down to finalize the alumni section of Soundings, it quickly occurs to me just how wonderful my job is. I feel honored, lucky, and truly inspired to work with a constituent group that is absolutely phenomenal. Cape Henry Collegiate School graduates do amazing things and, from my perspective, the underlying theme spanning the years, is involvement. There is involvement in collegiate studies and chosen professions, involvement in community leadership positions, involvement in global business and global education, and, of course, involvement right here at Cape Henry Collegiate School. It is clear that Cape Henry produces leaders; leaders that are making long-lasting contributions in so many facets of life. You are involved, you are interested, and you are making differences everywhere you go. We, here at Cape Henry, are so proud of you and I, personally, am proud to be working with you. I encourage your involvement with Cape Henry. Call me. Email me. Stop by and visit the School. We have so many opportunities for involvement!

If you have read the Business Section of The Virginian-Pilot within the last few months, chances are, you are familiar with the company, LTD Management. LTD Management Company, L.L.C., is an award-winning hotel development and management group currently headquartered in Chesapeake, but moving to the new Wachovia Center that is being built in downtown Norfolk, scheduled to open in 2010. You may already know that LTD, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, currently operates 22 properties, mostly in Virginia and Maryland, and has 12 more hotels in the development pipeline which are set to open this year and early next year. You may also know that the company manages over $500 million in assets and that they are the leading developer for the new downtown Norfolk hotel that will be built adjacent to the convention center. What you may not have known about LTD Management is that two managing partners and the new Regional Director of Sales are Cape Henry Collegiate School alumni. Brothers, Neel Desai '93 and Tejal Desai '98 are LTD Managing Partners and Ed Denton '97 was hired in November as Regional Director of Sales. Neel, who has been with LTD for ten years, oversees all aspects of the organization to ensure the company’s profitability, longevity, and growth. He is responsible for providing organizational structure and leadership to the LTD Management and Development teams. In addition, he also serves on various committees as an advisor for major lodging companies such as Marriott and Starwood. Neel is on the SpringHill Suites Marriott Operations Committee, the Design and Construction Committee, as well as on the Owner’s Advisory Board for Starwood’s new brands, Aloft by W, and the newly introduced extended stay brand, Element by Westin. The three business-savvy alumni were asked a series of questions regarding their Neel, who has a B.S, in finance and management information systems thoughts, opinions, and reflections of Cape Henry Collegiate School. After graduating from Cape Henry in 1998, Tejal dedicated himself to the completion of a B.A. in economics at the University of Virginia, a J.D. at the Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University, and a M.B.A at the Smeal College of Business of the Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining LTD Management as a Managing Partner in 2007, Tejal spent time with the Public Defenders Service in Washington, D.C. and served as a clerk to the Honorable Judge Thomas Kistler, Centre County, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas. His varied education, coupled with his prior work experience, enables Tejal to be comfortable in all aspects of the fast-growing company. As a Managing Partner, he, like his brother Neel, has his hands on just about everything, including all points of operations, finances, and real estate development. In his spare time, Tejal enjoys traveling with his wife, who also happens to be named Tejal, and watching and playing football and basketball. When Tejal ponders some of his favorite memories of Cape Henry, Mrs. Medley’s Latin classes, study halls with friends, and four-square and prison ball immediately come to mind!

Q: Reflecting back on your education and expe-

rience at Cape Henry, what do you feel are the top three things that make Cape Henry special, unique and/or valuable?

A:

I believe the top three things that made Cape Henry special for me was the individual attention I received from the faculty, the close relationships I formed with some fellow students that still exist today, and the fact that Cape Henry gave me the training and tools needed to be successful in college as well as in my life today.

Q: Cape Henry Core Values are community, opportunity, scholarship, and integrity. What are you thoughts on this?

A:

I believe these core values are very important to the continued success of Cape Henry. These values should act as pillars of strength for the School which should be ingrained in every student that attends Cape Henry. These same values can be and should be attributed to everyone’s daily life.

Q: In what capacity would you like to see Cape Henry alumni involved?

A:

I would like to see Cape Henry alumni involved in making the School an even better place than when we attended by involving ourselves on boards or committees where we can help make decisions for the betterment of the School. Continued on Page 22

Ed, as Regional Director of Sales, is currently responsible for the execution of sales strategies for nine of LTD’s properties in the Chesapeake and Norfolk area, but the area is expected to expand to 13 LTD-managed hotels by 2009, including the new Downtown Norfolk properties. Ed manages a professional sales team of ten personnel, and his team of sales experts is expected to grow to over twenty within the next two years. Prior to joining LTD, Ed spent three years with Marriott International and three years with Columbia Sussex Corporation. Ed, who majored in hospitality and tourism management at Virginia Tech, has been married for six years to his wife, Kimberly. The couple have two daughters, Elizabeth, 3, and Anabelle, 2. When asked what his funniest memory was during his time at Cape Henry, senior prank antics were devilishly recalled. If you would like to know about the pranks, give Ed a call; we would not want to give away any ideas!

Q: What, if any, responsibilities do CHCS alumni have? A: Alumni of any educational institution have a responsibility to do their part to insure others can reap the same or better benefits we were fortunate enough to enjoy. That support can be through direct involvement, financial contributions, or just sharing public support. When I think of great institutions (Harvard, Virginia Tech, the Naval Academy, etc), it is my perception that the passion, support, and involvement of their alumni have helped to shape and guide their success.

Q: How did your education at Cape Henry help you achieve your current success? A: Until recently, much of my work experience was focused on repositioning troubled hotels. Cape Henry, and my experience with Odyssey of the Mind,

helped teach me to think creatively, find solutions, and get things done quickly. I think my close interaction with the teachers and administrators at Cape Henry gave me a comfort level when dealing with authority figures. That comfort level translated to a confidence in the corporate world, which, early on, allowed me to build rapport with and earn respect from senior management. That has proven invaluable when being considered for promotions and new positions.

Q: What does it mean to be an alumnus of Cape Henry Collegiate School? A: There is a sense of pride that comes with being an alumnus of such a well respected school. While I have not stayed as well connected with the School or my classmates, when I have had the opportunity to catch up, it is always a very warm and nostalgic feeling.

Alumni Breakfast with Class of 2008 Following a Cape Henry tradition that Mrs. Arlene Ingram started many years ago, the Class of 2007 shared their first semester of college wisdoms with the current senior class. After a delicious, hot breakfast served in the Café Dolphin, close to 40 members of the Class of 2007 showcased their leadership, maturity, and confidence as they offered advice and answered questions from our rising graduates.

Fitz Shipp '07 (U of Chicago), Casey Scherrer '07 (UVA), and Brandon Allred '08 share some time together.

Barrett Jacobson '08, Kristin Quigg '07 (ODU), Aaron Moore '07 (ODU), Casey Scherrer '07 (UVA), Robert Morey '07 (UVA), Brandon Faubert '07 (Stevens Institute of Technology) and Morgan Pearman '07 (UVA) had a great time catching up and sharing stories.

Mrs. Debbie White, School Counselor, Ethan Kelley '07 (Steven's Institute of Technology), and Mrs. Arlene Ingram, Director of College Counseling, loved having the opportunity to share some food, snap some pictures and wish each other "Happy Holidays!"

Raj Dhillon '08, Chad McEnroe '07 (VT), Juan Cordero ’07 (VT), Alex Spruiell '07 (Duke) and Kyle Forbes ’07 (Berea College) shared a hearty breakfast and some laughs! The Class of 2007 has always set the bar high, and their leadership continued to shine as they had a record number of alumni who returned to serve on the panel.

New This Year: Senior Luncheons Mrs. Julie Scherrer, Associate Head of School and Director of Development, along with Mrs. Kristen Wheeler, Assistant Director of Development for Alumni Programs, are hosting small groups of seniors for lunch so that the groups can discuss the definition of “Cape Henry Collegiate School alumni.” The small setting allows for personal and meaningful conversation on all topics relevant to the roles of our alumni. As always, the seniors have taken these discussions seriously and as a result, the feedback is creating new ideas that are already being put into motion!

“The senior luncheon was great. I really enjoyed discussing the role of alumni in a small setting. I felt like I could actually offer input and that my voice would be heard. Yes, I actually have spent time thinking about what it means to be an alumnus of 24

On December 21 the Annual Alumni Basketball Game was held in the Alfred T. Taylor Field House. A record number of former players returned to pay tribute to Pete McMahan '00 who passed away this past spring after a short illness. Pete was remembered as a great teammate and supporter of Cape Henry Collegiate School. As friend Karen Lilley '02 recalled, he loved playing in this annual event. Pete was a good friend to everyone and a celebration of his life on this evening was heart-warming. Pete’s father, Ron McMahan, thanked the Cape Henry Collegiate School community for their love and support. This evening will be long remembered as a special time, and the naming of our annual alumni game to Pete McMahan Alumni Game will insure that we keep Pete’s memory alive in our heart for years to come.
