CHAMBER TRENDS LEADERSHIP CAPE CORAL CLASS OF 2017 DEADLINE IS AUGUST 1 Donna S. Germain President/CEO

Effective Leadership is a key element in any successful community. Continually developing and encouraging the participation of new leaders is essential in developing fresh ideas and perspectives while ensuring a continuity of leaders for the future. Leadership Cape Coral is a hands-on thirteen-week program that educates the participants about the components that make up Cape Coral and Lee County. From team building, to media, to healthcare, to infrastructure and city government, each program day is organized and chaired by graduates of the program so that they can share their knowledge of the program. “By committing yourself to the program you open many doors,” said Patrick Quinlan, 2003 Graduate. “You will learn about our community, with and through the eyes of your classmates and the many volunteers that make up the Day Chairs, Program Chairs and Facilitators, establish long lasting relationships with your classmates, create opportunities to grow your personal character and your business and build an awareness of the many needs of our community and a sense of wanting to give back through volunteering or in some other positive way.” There have been more than 600 graduates of the program since the charter year in 1993. Many of these graduates have become a part of Cape Coral Leadership Alumni and often go on to the Advanced Leadership Cape Coral program with a focus on developing and enhancing management and leadership skills. The final tier of leadership education is Cape Coral Community Trustee program, which is by invitation and helps participants discover areas where they can assume community leadership roles.

HEALTHY TRENDS THE WELLNESS WHEEL Salvatore Lacagnina, D.O. Vice President of Health & Wellness, Lee Memorial Health System

“The Wellness Wheel – a new paradigm for health maintenance A paradigm is a way of thinking, a standard or a model; and, when applied to health maintenance, this can be a radical shift. Traditional health care for many years has been a model designed around waiting for a health problem to occur and then working to cure the problem. Emphasis has been placed on finding new and innovative ways to treat illnesses with medications, surgeries and procedures -- thank goodness we have these at our fingertips. Since the early 1900s, the field of medicine has eradicated many of the infectious illnesses which killed so many.

Over my 24 years practicing medicine, I have seen many physicians emphasize the prevention of illness and over the last several years recommendations on what to do to stay healthy seem to be more pervasive. We read about these recommendations not only in the medical literature, but also in newspapers and magazines on a daily basis. We certainly still see a lot of TV ads for medications which treat the symptoms and not the cause of the illness but there is much talk and action about how to prevent illness in the first As the nation has developed, now we have to deal with many place. the combination of several medications to treat all these problems magnifies the side effects. Therefore, it is helpful to identify the reason for the stress, insomnia and the depression if possible; and, then to treat the cause in order to relieve the problem. Sleep and stress management are also part of the mental health portion of the Wellness Wheel.

Physical activity is included on the wheel and we know from looking at populations of people who maintain an active life that they live a more productive and a longer life. Physical activity is essential for the brain as well as body function. Realize that I use the term physical activity rather than exercise, since clinical research studies, as well as anecdotal reports, have proven that daily physical activity can be just as health promoting as formal Another component of the Wellness Wheel is purpose – the exercise -- that is, if the intensity of the activity is sufficient.
