The Burnaby Mountain Secondary student improv team is off to Ottawa next week for the 34th annual Canadian Improv Games, running April 19 to 23. In the foreground are Daniel Gorodetsky and Jordan Binotto. The Burnaby Mountain team won the regional tournament in February and is set to face off against top teams from around the country. The team has to fundraise to cover the cost of the trip, which is about $7,500. Call the school at 604664-8552 to find out how to help. Larry Wright/ burnaby now

School trustees Diana Mumford and Tony Coccia will not be running in the next civic election, opening two seats for new candidates to step forward. Both Coccia and Mumford are members of the Burnaby Citizens’ Association. Coccia was elected in 2005 and re-elected in 2008. Mumford has been a school trustee for nine years. She served as board chair for two years and vice-chair before that. Mumford did not want to comment on why she is not running again. “It was difficult decision I’m still strug-

gling with at this time. I don’t want to get into specifics,” she said, adding she was very grateful for the opportunity to serve as a trustee. “I’m very passionate about this. I’m probably going to get very emotional about this. I’m so proud of the Burnaby school system.” Mumford has also represented the Burnaby school district at the provincial level as a director with the B.C. School Trustees’ Association. Mumford’s work focused on advocating for a primary challenge program, English as a second language students and refugees in the school system. She helped push the provincial government

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Knocking on doors in Burnaby Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Former Burnaby city councilor Garth Evans is running under the Liberal banner but with a late start. He’s opened an office in the Old Orchard Shopping Centre and has been out fundraising, campaigning and appearing at a couple of events in the Korean community. Evans said he is concerned about social policy and is encouraging people to vote Liberal. “We have a very good chance to be the government. The NDP has no chance,” he said. He also said, if elected, he would lobby the Liberals for about $15 million in funding for an immigrant services centre in the Edmonds area. “I’m also extremely concerned about the lack of a homeless shelter in Burnaby,” he said, adding he wants Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation funding restored for affordable housing. Evans is a lawyer, and his practice involves housing for people with disabilities, low-income families and homeless shelters. He also said he’s concerned about health care, seniors’ issues and the environment.

Meeting the voters

Incumbent Peter Julian has been spending his time door-knocking, phoning,

The New Democrat said he has met a lot of people that he’s helped in the past. “We’ve got one of the most active constituency offices in the country,” Julian said. When asked what issues voters were raising, Julian said trust and accountability were the most frequent concerns, followed by “luxury” government spending on things like fighter jets. “For a couple of less fighter jets you can lift seniors out of poverty,” he said.

Young people are struggling with student debt, and the HST is still upsetting people, he added. Julian has represented Burnaby-New Westminster since 2004.

Good voter response

Conservative candidate Paul Forseth has also been out door-knocking daily and says he’s getting good response from undecided voters. “People at the door are pretty polite. The odd person may not speak English, but door-knocking is not as difficult as some might think,” he said.

Forseth said he was concerned about voter turnout and pointed out that only 58 per cent of eligible voters bothered to vote in the last election – the lowest turnout in Canadian history. As for issues, Forseth highlighted public safety and international trade, claiming incumbent Peter Julian has consistently voted against Conservative measures addressing these issues. “There’s a socialist mindset that has a very narrow view on what is acceptable to them concerning trade arrangements, that’s not helpful to our country,” he said. City pays tribute to environmental activist Janaya Fuller-Evans

The portable building on the Stoney Creek Community School grounds will be named the Jennifer Atchison Environmental Centre in recognition of the environmentalist who passed away last summer. Atchison, who was born in 1938, was a Burnaby streamkeeper and a founding member of the Stoney Creek Environment Committee.

The building is used as an environmental classroom, and the city thought Atchison was a suitable choice for the facility. “She was an ardent soldier, to protect the environment,” said Coun. Dan Johnston. Johnston is chair of the city’s environmental committee. She was a dedicated worker and leader in environmental initiatives, particularly within the Stoney Creek watershed, where she worked to increase returning fish stocks, he added.

Green candidate Carrie McLaren has been helping other candidates with their campaigns when she’s not out door knocking for her own. When asked if the environment is a big issue with local voters, McLaren said not really. “They already know that’s our niche,” she said. “I was talking with people who are not eligible to vote yet, and they were saying: We just want jobs.” McLaren pointed to a Green platform promise to give money to municipal governments to help hire young people.

Heights merchants want traffic solutions Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

A neighbourhood with cars racing through it is not a successful shopping district, the Burnaby Heights Merchants Association told council at Monday night’s meeting. A delegation from the association – executive director Isabel Kolic and vicepresident Josie Romeo – spoke to council about the group’s concerns regarding certain proposed traffic calming measures for the neighbourhood. Of particular concern was the suggestion that the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane hours on Hastings Street be extended, according to Kolic. Hastings Street cannot just be regarded as a vehicle thoroughfare, she said, explaining that many people feel uncomfortable walking on the south side of Hastings Street with traffic zooming by. It can also be difficult for pedestrians to feel safe crossing the street, she added, during HOV lane hours. “I want to dispel the idea that HOVs cut rat-running through neighbourhoods,” Kolic said, adding that increasing HOV lane hours would actually increase traffic. Merchants would face further challenges if the hours were extended, she said. “The success of the merchants directly affects the success of the Heights as a community,” Kolic said. HOV lanes are noisy, polluting and dangerous and do not add to the community ambience in any way, she said.

“The HOV lane has done nothing to better our community in the last 15 years,” Kolic said. The two other traffic calming suggestions put forth by the city that worried the association were asking employees to park in parking lots meant for customers in the area, and the left-hand turn signal proposed for Gilmore Avenue at Hastings Street. Mayor Derek Corrigan thanked them for sharing their perspective with council. “We’re always pleased to see you come here and respond on behalf of the merchants,” he said. The ideas proposed to help with traffic problems in the Heights are not a final solution, he stressed, but only things to consider while the city comes up with a plan for handling the situation. “We’re trying to find the right combination of measures,” Corrigan added. Traffic is a terrible problem in the Heights, he acknowledged, saying Burnaby is a traffic corridor to Vancouver and this has always caused issues. But he added that council heard the delegation’s concerns, saying that ambience is important to consider. “Ambience is a big issue, not just parking, and we forget that,” he said. The city has undertaken a number of public consultations over the past year to address traffic problems in the area. Of particular concern to residents is traffic that cuts down residential streets to avoid congestion on Hastings Street in order to get to Vancouver. www.twitter.com/janayafe

As well, the sleddog investigation, which the SPCA led, is estimated to cost at least $200,000. Clark also said the government will start providing annual funding to the SPCA. To be sure, there will certainly be protests or cries for help from other animal rescue organizations that are hurt-

And, finally, veterinarians have mixed feelings about a new rule that would force them to report suspected cases of animal abuse. But Clark’s pledges are a big step forward from what the previous government did, and these changes will make a difference.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Don’t be swayed by Tory politics Dear Editor:

I have guns. More than one, including custommade rifles. All stored safely and all registered. This is not a rant by an anti-gun lobbyist. This is a plea to fellow hunters and other gun owners to do the right thing and not be swayed by Stephen Harper’s politics of division. So, let me say again. I have guns. I love my guns and am a self-described hunting nut. For me, hunting isn’t just a thing I do a weekend or two a year. I dedicate far more attention to it than just loading my guns in the truck and heading out. At home, I hand load all my own ammunition. I’ve hunted all my life – from mountain sheep in British Columbia, to groundhogs on the Prairies, to caribou in northern Quebec. Registering my weapons has had no impact on

any of that. As soon as the gun registry was set up, I registered my guns. To be honest, in those early days, the process was a bit of a pain, a little confusing and took some time. But my hunting friends tell me it’s much simpler now. Even so, we’re talking about registering something that can kill people. We register our cars and motorbikes. My iPod is registered with Apple. So why not register guns? When police respond to a problem, they want to know what’s waiting for them inside. Factories are required to tell the fire department about the chemicals they have on site – so firefighters know what their up against if there’s a fire. Don’t police deserve the same protection? The country’s chiefs of police think so. It’s just Harper who thinks otherwise. From Montreal to Arizona, we pay the price for

angry people let loose with guns. No, the gun registry won’t stop all that senseless murder, but it’s a big help. Just look at the statistics between Canada and the USA on deaths by guns. Harper must be stopped before he raises the flag on the 51st state. He would waste the millions already spent on the registry just to win a few divisive political points. Maybe he should come up with some new ideas, instead of recycling his old ones. To my fellow gun owners, register your weapons and vote with all your values. How green are Greens? Dear Editor:

Laneway houses in Burnaby is the most ridiculous idea put out by the Green party. Toronto has stopped lane house development because there was such an uproar when residents were building McMansions. They were blocking out the sun so gardens would not flourish. In Burnaby we are fighting to save the trees on residential lots. By covering the residential lots with more housing, there will be less trees, less green gardens, less greenspace, less oxygen for us to breathe. We will have more cars that will lead to more air pollution. Let’s face it, people generally don’t give up their cars even when they are beside a SkyTrain station. As for mortgage helpers, as Gordon World suggested, why not join the masses in Burnaby that have illegally suited their

houses and aren’t declaring the revenue? There are areas along the SkyTrain routes that are slated for development. Build highrises and condos there. Save our trees. Donna Polos, Burnaby

Tories to blame for election

Dear Editor:

Let’s stop this nonsense that the “oppositional coalition” forced this election. Never mind that a coalition of opposition parties simply does not exist, this election could have been avoided if the Harper government had not contemptuously refused to provide Parliament with a costing of its major policy moves, including military spending and new prison construction. That – how much were these programs going to cost the taxpayer – was the subject of the motion of non-confidence that led to Harper’s visit with the Governor General. Harper could have easily provided cost estimates. But he wanted an election. But he did not want an election debate based on a contempt of Parliament finding, and so the Conservatives tabled a budget with a few relatively inexpensive (and, it must be said, inconsequential) goodies. It was meant to permit Harperites to shift the election focus by making the budget the issue rather than contempt of Parliament. To answer the question, it was Harper who forced this election, not Ignatieff, nor Layton, nor Duceppe nor any combination thereof. And it was because the Conservatives wouldn’t tell Parliament – thus us, the taxpayers – the cost of their “jails and jets” policy. In the end, I trust the majority of the voting public (minus diehard Conservatives) will recognize this election for what it is: an opportunity to get rid of a crass and cynical political party. Bill Brassington, Burnaby

Debate: Should Greens be in? continued from page 6

elect anyone and in fact haven’t even come close to winning a seat. However, the Greens argue that electing an MP or MLA should not be the sole criterion for determining which party leader gets on the debate. There is some validity to this argument. Our first-past-the-post electoral system favours large established parties and makes it difficult for newer, smaller parties to win seats. At the national level, the Green party received almost one million votes in the 2008 election but won no seats. Should those near-million voters have no rep-

resentation in the debate? At the provincial level, the Greens won almost 135,000 votes in 2009. Is that enough to get on the stage at the debate? May has complained that the network consortium established the rules on an arbitrary basis. That may be true, but any rule that anyone else comes up with is of an arbitrary nature as well. Perhaps there should be more than one criterion to establish which party leader is allowed in such debates. Such things as seat representation, portion of popular vote, a large number of candidates in the field, and significant polling results

(from a series of polls over time) could be used as criteria, with leaders qualifying for inclusion if their parties meet a set combination of those factors. But there is no sure thing when it comes to leaders’ televised debates. Neither Sterk nor, for that matter, newly installed B.C. Conservative Party leader John Cummins, is guaranteed a spot in next provincial debate, even though they will vociferously argue for one. Indeed, Elizabeth May’s exclusion has officially opened the debate about the next B.C. debate. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

MetroPlace, a high-density highrise development in the Metrotown neighbourhood, began sales of its units last weekend. The project is an ambitious one for the city and the developer, Intracorp Lands Ltd., with a 46-storey residential tower, three storeys of commercial and community space, and a public pedestrian plaza along Beresford Street. “It really is the template for a new, more sophisticated building for Burnaby,” Maurice Pez, Intracorp’s senior vice-presi-

dent of development, said in a phone interview. He compared the vision for the project to areas like Kitsilano and Robson Street in Vancouver, and Lonsdale Avenue in North Vancouver, calling it “an urban high street.” “There’s a plan for all of Beresford, to make it a really active, vibrant street,” he said. The area is intended to become the downtown heart of Metrotown, he said. The lobby of the building will open in the back onto Beresford, Pez said, and the plan also includes a courtyard and Zen garden in that area.

Development: Highrise first for new city zoning continued from page 9

Architectural firm Busby Perkins + Will designed the project. The design for the tower includes a large, lit glass lantern at the northeast corner and a transparent lobby entrance on Telford Avenue over a raised walkway with a water feature on each side. Other amenities include a green roof over the commercial area and a two-storey fitness studio. Planning for the pedestrian plaza along Beresford Street includes landscaping, public seating and an art walk. The units are based on an open floor plan, with glazed glass partitions, Pez said. Two-story townhomes are planned to line Telford Avenue, with stacked flats above and roof terraces with out-

door fireplaces. The 342 homes start in the $250,000s for one-bedroom units, and two-bedroom units in the $420,000s. Sizes range from 493 square feet for one bedroom, one bath, to 946 sq. ft. for two bedrooms, two bathrooms and den, according to a press release from Intracorp. MetroPlace is directly across from the Metrotown SkyTrain station, over three former property zonings – 6451, 6475 and 6479 Telford Ave. “It’s a very exciting proposal,” Coun. Sav Dhaliwal said about the project at a recent council meeting. “It opens up the south side of the mall area.” The plaza could be used for public events, parades and celebrations, Mayor Derek Corrigan said at the

meeting. It would open up the area from the Bonsor Recreation Complex to Central Park, he added. “It’s much more walker-friendly,” he said. “Intracorp made this a very appealing project for the city.” The highrise is the first under the city’s new zoning as part of its density initiative, which adds the suffix ‘s’ zoning to RM3, RM4 and RM5 districts. The increased density also means an increase to community benefit contributions, according to council. Through the policy, developers are required to give a portion of space on site or at other developments for non-profits or to make a financial contribution to the city in lieu of space. The MetroPlace presentation centre is at 6039 McKay Ave., Burnaby. See www.metroplaceliving.ca.

The eatery, located at 4502 Dawson St., has been a Burnaby institution for the past 14 years, even though people may know the place by its previous name, Café Amore. “We used to have a huge breakfast crowd,” said Magagnin, who said that once fast-food breakfast options started popping up near the SkyTrain station, he had to make a change. “We’re now doing dinner, and that goes really well with our regular lunch crowd.” With amore, the Italian word for love, in the name of the restaurant, the food is lovingly prepared fresh and with the unique culi-

nary skills of a man born into the restaurant business. Magagnin learned about the kitchen from his father Mario in their hometown of San Boldo, Italy. Claudio honed his skills at a variety of restaurants, from La Rocca and Portofino to the self-named Claudio’s in North Burnaby before he came to his current Dawson Street location in 1997. His wife, Maria, also helps out. On a recent weekday, I sat down with the Magagnins and saw first-hand the love they put into every dish at their restaurant. “Restaurants are in his blood,” said Maria. “It’s Claudio’s passion, and he puts everything into this place.” Claudio showed off some of his culinary skills for my discerning palate. Claudio starts off with authentic bruschetta ($6.95), which comes with some of the tastiest bread, freshest tomatoes and bocconcini cheese anywhere in the city. Going well with the bruschetta is another of

Pasta Amore’s favourite appetizers, the $8.95 tiger prawns, which literally slide down your throat after being exquisitely panfried with garlic, white wine and lemon sauce. By the time I get to the main courses, the only choice is the seafood pasta ($12.95 for lunch and $13.95 for dinner) that you can have served with penne, linguine or spaghetti. As if the baby shrimp, clams, squids and other seafoods aren’t enough, Claudio goes an extra step and adds some of Mama’s meatballs to the pasta – and the combination is nothing short of spectacular. Pasta Amore, located near Willingdon and Dawson, is open for lunch on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and for dinner from Tuesday to Thursday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Pasta Amore is closed Sunday. Call 604-298-3135 or go to www.pastaamore.ca. For a full review and more photos, see Alfie Lau’s Cheap Shots blog at www.burnaby now.com.

Get Medieval: The Amabilis Singers during a past spring concert at New

Westminster Christian Reformed Church, under the direction of Burnaby’s Ramona Luengen. The choir is presenting Carmina Burana on April 17.

Carmina Burana in concert When director Ramona Luengen was looking for a way to celebrate the Amabilis Singers’ 30th anniversary, there was no question that she wanted to come up with a memorable finale for the season. Inspiration struck in the form of Carmina Burana – the Carl Orff matsterwork that sets medieval poetry to music. “The thought of Carmina Burana as a season finale seemed a perfect one. It’s big, it’s happy, it’s demanding, it’s exuberant, … and it’s truly a celebratory work,” she says.

Luengen, a Burnaby resident, is leading the New Westminster-based choir along with three soloists, two pianists and five percussionists in concert. It’s set for Sunday, April 17 at Shaughnessy Heights United Church, 1550 West 33rd Ave., Vancouver. Tickets are $20, or free for children under 12. Reserve by calling 604-433-6538. Burnaby Board of Trade Hosts the 2011 State of the City Address

On April 28th, one hundred internationally educated professionals will join one hundred employers at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown hotel to hear World Economic Forum member Bob Elton share his views from an economic perspective on global trends of skill and talent mobility. The event is Breaking Down the Barriers: Employers Forum and will mark the culmination of the Burnaby Board of Trade’s immigrant integration project – part of the Welcoming and Inclusive Communities and Workplaces Program (WICWP). This project has seen the BBOT lead groups of internationally trained professionals on tours of local Burnaby-based employers, to discuss the hiring process and the barriers that often exist for new Canadians trying to enter the workforce. In addition to the Keynote presentation by Elton, the evening will also present a rare opportunity to hear firsthand the experiences, success stories, and perspectives of a diverse group of both employers and international professionals as they discuss the benefits and challenges of workforce entry. Attendees will be seated by occupation or industry sector and will participate in guided discussion, as well as open networking. The Employer Forum promises to be a unique and unforgettable event, and all employers are invited to attend. For more information or for details on how to register, visit www.bbot.ca/events.

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan presented his 2011 State of the City address at a business luncheon on April 7th, which was hosted by the Burnaby Board of Trade. Mayor Corrigan’s speech focused on the revitalization and expansion of several regions in Burnaby, including the areas surrounding Metrotown, Brentwood Town Centre, Lougheed Town Centre, SFU’s UniverCity and Edmonds Town Centre. The emphasis for 2011 is on social sustainability—the foundation for a healthy economy, strong natural environments, and creating liveable vibrant communities. The goal behind the sustainability strategy is to make Burnaby the preferred city for economic investment in the Lower Mainland. Mayor Corrigan pointed out that we are well on our way to achieving this since “Burnaby is the

home of world-stage corporate players in technology, two high-calibre postsecondary educational institutions, two rapid transit lines, strong sector clusters in industries with high growth potential, and an outstanding array of community amenities.” He believes that the secret to is creativity, collaboration and engagement with Burnaby residents, businesses and visitors. Burnaby has a population of approximately 223,000, making it the thirdlargest municipality in B.C. The financial state of the city is strong, and Mayor Corrigan mentioned that the city’s joint efforts with the Burnaby Board of Trade has opened up doors for mutual partnerships around the world, including Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea. These relationships have contributed to Burnaby’s financial success by hosting trade delegations and creating productive business relationships. As the city continues to grow and develop the Burnaby Board of Trade looks forward to carrying on its successful partnership with the City of Burnaby and helping to achieve the goals for 2011. BBOT CEO Bids Farewell

Spend Your Tax Refund Wisely

TESSA VANDERKOP tessa@bbot.ca

DARLENE GERING WITH LOCAL BURNABY MP’S BILL SIKSAY AND PETER JULIAN

Darlene Gering, President and CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade will be leaving the position after six years. During her tenure she more than tripled the Board’s membership and created a legacy of bringing business and social development together to address community issues. Breaking Down the Barriers, an award winning program that helps integrate professional immigrants into the business community, the annual Environmental Sustainability Forum, homelessness and promoting the triple bottom line for businesses are just some of the initiatives Gering has spearheaded at the Burnaby Board of Trade. “It has been an honour for me to serve the Burnaby business community, helping to forge the way for the Board’s involvement in these important issues that affect business and community alike,” Gering leaves the Board of Trade in May after finishing some key projects. Wren Long currently acts as interim CEO, helping to transition the team until the new CEO is announced.

Sometimes spending money wisely can be a challenge - especially tax refunds, which can seem like free money. If you’re lucky enough to get a tax refund this year, take a moment to consider how you could put that money to work for you instead of squandering it on a big screen TV, new wardrobe or beach holiday. Here are some smart ways to spend your refund: ! Add to your emergency fund. Set aside enough cash to cover six months of expenses — just in case the unexpected happens. ! Pay down credit cards and other high interest debt. You’ll save money on interest charges and increase your monthly cash flow. ! Jump start next year’s RRSP. Contributing early allows you to take advantage of all those extra months of tax-free growth. At retirement time this can mean thousands more in your pocket. ! Invest in a Tax-Free Savings Account. Growth or earnings in a TFSA are 100% tax-free, and you’re allowed to contribute up to $5,000 per year. ! Pay down your mortgage. Lump sum payments on your outstanding principal will save significant dollars in interest charges over the long term. It also means you’ll own your home mortgage-free that much sooner. ! Save for a child’s education. Invest in a Registered Education Savings Plan on behalf of a child or grandchild and you’ll qualify for a government-sponsored Canada Education Savings Grant of between 20-24% of the contribution (to a maximum of $600). ! Take care of outstanding RRSP loans. Some loans have three or four month grace periods during which time you’re not required to make any payments towards the interest or principal. Remember that the interest owed still continues to accumulate until the loan is completely paid off. Remember, how you spend your money today will have a significant impact on your future. For advice on how to get your tax refund working for you, talk to one of G&F Financial Group’s friendly knowledgeable staff today. For more information, contact Gill Sherwood at 604.521.2315 or visit GFFG.com.

Salmon release set for Saturday Volunteer streamkeepers are releasing 50,000 tiny salmon into Eagle Creek this weekend, and they are encouraging local residents to come out and participate. The Eagle Creek Streamkeepers is a group dedicated to restoring the fish and wildlife of Eagle Creek. They are holding the annual event on April 16, and the chum released in the water will help re-establish the creek’s fish population. Chum fry typically head out to sea in April

and May. The salmon release runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Charles Rummel Park, by Government Road and Lozells Avenue. Volunteers will also clean up around the creek, remove invasive species and mark storm drains so people know not to dump harmful chemicals in sewer systems. Chili and hotdogs will be served. CLICK & CLACK TALK CARS Ray & Tom Magliozzi

Dear Tom and Ray: Last week my fiancée’s father was driving his 1987 Buick from the farm into town. A couple of hundred yards away from the house (and about 0.1 mile from the highway) on the gravel road, the car caught fire. Her dad, instead of using his cellphone to call the fire department, left the car on the road and walked home to tell his wife. He told her it’d burn itself out. A short while later, they were in the kitchen and were – seriously – surprised to see the fire department outside

putting out the blazing car. So, (1) what the heck kind of family am I marrying into? And (2) we know that it’s toxic, in poor taste and dangerous, but would the car actually have pulled a “movie moment” and exploded? Or, like her father says, would it have burned itself out? – Seth TOM: I think Pops really wants a new Buick, Seth. He was afraid that if he put out the fire, they’d somehow be able to patch up his car, and he’d have to drive it for another five years. So he walked away to make sure it had ample time to caramelize. RAY: That’s a very dangerous thing to do. It certainly can explode. What happens is that fires usually start in the engine compartment. Sometimes they can burn themselves out if they run out of nearby materials to combust. TOM: But lots of times

they keep burning. And then they spread to the undercarriage, and then the tires, and the interior. Once a fire spreads, it easily can melt the fuel lines, or cause the pressure in the fuel tank to rise so much that the tank breaks. RAY: And even if the car doesn’t explode like the Death Star in Star Wars, any rupture in the fuel lines or fuel tank will result in a huge and violent increase in flames. TOM: That could set nearby fields, and then houses, on fire, which won’t endear Pops to his neighbours. RAY: So, whenever you have a car that catches fire that you can’t address immediately with the proper fire extinguisher, you should move away from the car and call the fire department. TOM: What kind of family are you marrying into, Seth? One that needs to

Winter club wonderland in Winnipeg Last Western title was in 2007, also in Winnipeg Tom Berridge

sports editor

Next year’s Burnaby Winter Club AAA bantam just couldn’t wait for 2012 to get it done. The winter club Bruins, with six first-year players in its lineup, upset the Manitoba champion Winnipeg Hawks 3-2 in overtime en route to a third Western Canada bantam hockey championship in Winnipeg on Sunday. Second-year forward Victor Dombrovskiy scored the game-winner with his first goal of the Western championships six minutes into overtime. “I knew when I picked this team, I thought this team was pretty special,” said John Batchelor, who earned his third Western title as head coach of the winter club. “They had the character, they had the attitude and they didn’t disappoint.” Winnipeg held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period after Burnaby’s Justin Szeto had opened the scoring in the first minute of play in the goldmedal final. First team all-star Matthew Barzal tied the game midway through the final frame on assists by Dombrovskiy and Szeto. Dombrovskiy and winter club goalie Nicholas McBride were also named to the all-tournament first team. The Western banner was the third in 10 seasons for the Burnaby Winter Club.

Jubiliation: Burnaby Winter Club’s Justin Szeto celebrates the game-opening goal with Lucas Mercer and

teammates Victor Dombrovskiy, 77, and Brandon DelGrosso, 7, in a 3-2 overtime win over the Winnipeg Hawks in the championship final of the Western Canada bantam hockey championships Sunday. Dombrovskiy got the OT winner for the winter club. The Canada Way club won previous Western Canada titles in 2002 and 2007. “It’s wonderful to win a Western, but those two were expected to be there,” Batchelor said of the two previous winning teams. “This team was not expected to be there, even by people at the club. The kids wanted their names on a white banner.” Batchelor said the turning point for the team ocurred well before they

qualified for Winnipeg. Losing twice to the Abbotsford Hawks in the playoffs turned the team around, said Batchelor. “That second loss to Abbotsford taught them that hard work beats talent. We stress all along the will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital,” Batchelor said. “They have to be focused. They have to understand that mental preparation is the most important. That’s

what we stress before the game.” The Bruins appeared to get the message, opening the championship tournament with a 14-1 shellacking of the host Winnipeg Sharks. The following day, BWC edged Alberta champion Southgate Lions 3-2 and the hometown Hawks 5-3. In its final round-robin matchup on Saturday, Burnaby Winter Club

defeated the Prince Albert Pirates 5-1. “They just know how to win,” Batchelor added. “They play composed. Even the young guys, they’ve played in so many big games in their lives, they don’t get too high or too low. “If we hadn’t lost those two games to Abbotsford, I don’t think we would have been here. They learned a valuable lesson in those games with Abbotsford.”

Burnaby wrestlers medal at junior nationals Tom Berridge

sports editor

Burnaby South Secondary’s Melvin Arciaga won the boys’ 50-kilogram wrestling title at the Canadian national cadet championships in Windsor, Ont. Saturday. Arciaga, fighting out of the Raw wrestling academy in Vancouver, defeated Matthew Dignan of Abbotsford 7-2 in the championship final match. Arciaga, this year’s provincial high school champion, won five straight matches, including two bouts by pins, to earn the gold

medal at the nationals. Schoolmate Andrew Warren won a bronze medal in the cadet boys’ 66kg division. Warren lost his opening bout on a technical decision to eventual national champ Caleb Rutner of WWC. Warren then won his next five matches to take third place with a 16-10 decision over Ben Christopher of NCWC. He also won two of his backdoor matches by pins. Burnaby Central heavyweight Amar Dhesi won gold in the cadet boys’ 100kg weight class. Dhesi beat four other oppo-

nents in a round-robin wrestleoff. Dhesi won blanked three of his opponents, winning all three by technical decision. His bout with Ron Liena of Black Bear was stopped because of injury. Another Central grappler, Saheel Khan, was a runner-up in the national juvenile championships, winning a silver medal at 100kg. Khan lost 2-0 to gold-medal winner Aaron Misner of the Jr. Marauders club in the juvenile men’s final in Windsor on Friday. Khan defeated Lewis Biamonte of Edmonton 2-1 in the semifinal

and Stewart Kyle of Team Impact 4-1 in the quarter-finals. St. Thomas More Collegiate’s Clarisse Dos Santos placed in the top six at the cadet girls’ nationals. Dos Santos lost to eventual bronze medallist Eugenia Gokhman by a fall in her opening bout. She then split her three remaining matches in the repercharge, losing two by falls although leading on points in both matches. Adib Jaber and Azra Iviziku of Burnaby South were both one win away placing in their respective weight classes at the nationals.

Gajic scored his third goal of the series and added an assist for the Vancouver Canucks minor league affiliate in a 3-2 win over the Condors in Game 4 of the best-of-five first-round playoff series. The win toppled the Condors, No. 2 finishers in the Western conference during the regular season, out of the playoff picture. Gajic had two earlier goals in the series as the two clubs split the opening games of the playoff in Victoria. The Salmon Kings took a 2-1 series lead with a 2-0 shutout in Bakersfield on Friday.

South Burnaby club boys and girls top basketball playoffs The South Burnaby Metro Club Eagles recently won two of three playoff titles in the under-13 Metro basketball league. The South Burnaby girls, with three returning players from last season’s provincial championship squad, were a perfect 14-0 in league play and swept the opposition in the playoffs. The girls took part in their provincial championship last weeekend. South Burnaby defeated Tri-City 55-25 in the championship game. The Eagle girls also beat AthElite 47-24. The u-13 Eagle boys defended their A division title after winning its fourth regular season title in six seasons. South Burnaby got by Langley’s Drive Elite program 51-41 in the playoff final. The Eagles, 9-3 in league play, qualified for the championship finals with a 54-49 win over Richmond and a 54-44 victory over AthElites. The u-12 Eagles, the club’s best grade 5 and 6 boys, finished the regular season with a respectable 7-7 record against the older teams in the Metro B division. However, the young Eagles caught fire in the post season and made it all the way to the playoff final before dropping a 53-23 decision to North Langley. South Burnaby defeated South Delta 52-42 and Maple Ridge 46-43 en route to the final. The provincial boys’ club championships will be held in Richmond from April 15 to 17.

GYMNASTICS

Wings athlete tops P3 open category Joanna Wong of Wings Gymnastics in Burnaby won the provincial 3 open women’s artistic gymnastics title at the B.C. championships in Langley last weekend. The Cameron rec centre gymnast captured first place on floor exercises and second place on the uneven bars to win the women’s all-around with a 48.600 score. Wong garnered 12.950 points to win on floor. She also recorded a score of 12.400 on bars. Wong also placed in the top 10 in the other two disciplines, placing tied for fourth on the vault and seventh on the balance beam. Wong finished just ahead of Campbell River’s Tiffany Sharkie, who was an individual winner on the vault and balance beam. Wong also edged thirdplace finisher and bars champion Brynn Staples of Phoenix Gymnastics in Vancouver by less than a point. In the women’s national open category, Helen Cheung of Burnaby placed eighth in the all-around.

Cheung, who trains out of Flicka Gymnastics in North Vancouver, won the uneven bars with a score of 11.250. She also placed fourth on floor. In the women’s P3 tyro 99 division, Alora Jones of Wings finished 16th with an all-around score of 45.100. Jones posted a secondbest 12.200 score on the vault and a fourth-best 12.450 score on floor. Hailey Massingham of Wings placed fourth in the women’s P2 open allaround. Massingham won the vault with a 12.650 score. She was also seventh on bars and beam. Clubmate Raha Dang was 18th overall, despite a third-place score of 12.150 on floor and a fifth-best score of 12.300 on the vault. In women’s P2 novice, Emma Crooks of Wings finished seventh in the allaround. Megan Heron, Savana Fogh and Raquel Slotten also placed in the 44-gymnast strong P2 novice division.

Burnaby South post Nick Irvine and guard Denzel Laguerta of St. Thomas More Collegiate were invited to take part in Basketball B.C.’s under-17 provincial team selection camp. On the girls’ side, Ariana Sider of New Westminster was named to the 24-player roster at the camp.

U-16 upset: Matthew Shannik, in red, eyes a ball in a 2-0 loss to the Victoria Capitals 95 in second-round under-16 boys’ Coastal A Cup play at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West last Saturday.

U-16 Selects given Royal sendoff The Burnaby Selects Royals ended up on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline in second round Coastal A Cup playoffs last weekend. The runner-up team in the boys’ under-16 Division 1 Metro soccer league were shut out by the fifth-place-finish-

ing Victoria Capitals at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West on Saturday. Victoria took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. The Capitals then took a two-goal lead late in the game with Burnaby playing a man down.

Former club president Rich Baerg was honoured with the Don Boyd Memorial Award for service to the association at the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association’s annual volunteer appreciation and awards banquet at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown on Saturday. Irene Wong was the recipient of the President’s Award for outstanding contribution to the association. Richard Taki won the rep coach of the year award for his work with the bantam A1 team. Jeff Sheehan won the house coach award with his atom C4 squad, while bantam coach Jack Tsui won the female team coach award. Bantam A2 manager Iqbal Dhanani was handed the Tony Marzitelli Memorial Award.

Tiger finishes pro callup with a roar in a 4-3 win over the Albany River Rats on Sunday. A day earlier, McNeely earned another second star for the Tigers, following a goal and one assist in a 4-3 loss to the Connecticut Whale on April 9. After going pointless in his first four outings, McNeely garnered a total of 11 points in his last six games with Bridgeport Sound, including a pair of goals against the Binghampton Senators and his first pro three-point outing against the Springfield Falcons last week. Bridgeport Sound finished last in the AHL’s Eastern conference Atlantic division and out of the playoffs.

Burnaby’s Tyler McNeely will be sad to see the American Hockey League regular season end. The former Northeastern University varsity captain has been a hot commodity in his pro league debut with the New York Islanders affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the month of April. McNeely chalked up his final two games of the AHL season with a pair of game-star outings. The Burnaby product punctuated his final game this season for the Tigers, scoring his fifth goal in his pro league callup. He also assisted on two other Bridgeport Sound tallies, including the game-winner
