Pellet gun brought to school

A pellet gun was produced on a school yard last week, prompting a threat assessment by school district staff. Staff at Webster’s Corners Elementary immediately confiscated the weapon after another child reported seeing it during recess last Tuesday, said district communications manager Seamus Nesling. While some people might consider this type of pellet gun a toy, “it’s

completely inappropriate to bring one to school,” Nesling told The TIMES. While it might not be considered a firearm, a pellet gun can look like a real gun and fire projectiles. “We take it very seriously,” he said. After the pellet gun was noticed by a child, it was immediately seized, Nesling explained. And, within minutes the incident was reported to the principal, who took control of the situation but was unavailable to comment prior to press deadline. After an incident like this, a risk assessment is done by the school

zone health and safety team, the principal, and the staff member who reported the incident. The school will also bring in someone trained in threat assessment. “You always err on the side of caution in cases like this,” Nesling added, noting this might be a case of a child showing off a new toy unaware of the seriousness of the situation. “Some kids might not understand how threatening something like this would appear to other people,” Nesling concluded.

By law, the school board has to balance its budget, and cuts proposed this year include elementary band, special education, and class-size ratios. The proposed cuts to the elementary band program is a “fine example” of what the school board struggles with when balancing the budget, said Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows board chair Ken Clarkson. Band is a “wonderful service,” and the district funds it because they think it’s good for students. But, he said it’s beyond the mandate of the school district. The itinerant band teacher is teaching some classes with only five students. With 107.5 full-time-equivalent teachers, reducing by two full-time teachers in 27 schools would be “very negligible,” said school board director Laurie Meston. To balance its budget, the school board is also considering raising its average class sizes slightly in intermediate, secondary, and English-as-a-second-language. The new Minister of Education George Abbott is more conciliatory than his predecessors, Clarkson said, but the message is the same – there’s no more money. But Clarkson said with their lobbying efforts, he does think the message that more money is needed is getting through. “I feel like they’re starting to get it,” he said.

A curious Ridge Meadows police officer smelled a strong odour of marijuana when he passed by a U-Haul truck in the parking lot of the Maple Ridge Golf Course at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. Upon detecting this distinct odour, the officer checked inside and found 181 marijuana plants. Staff at Aloutette Animal Hospital, and Elmo’s ‘mom’ Shelly Balson, are blown away by the outpouring of love and donations to aid Elmo in getting his operation after a dog attack two months ago. “I was just blown away,” said Balson. “I cried when the vet called to tell me the news,” that there was enough money to perform Elmo’s surgery. Elmo had been bitten by a pit bull, and the only option to save his right front leg was to amputate. However, a $1,500 bill stood in the way, and that is where the Alouette Animal Hospital and the Jackson Fund kicked in. “Over $2,000 I think came in,” said Dr. Michael Orser, the vet who performed the surgery on Elmo’s leg. “But, we do get other cases similar to [Elmo] where people need help.” The Jackson Fund was founded in 2004 by brothers Ken and Fred Jackson, who upon passing, left a sizable donation to the hospital to help with the medical expenses of pets whose owners had financial hardship. “It had been dropping down over the years,” said Orser, who added euthanasia is not an option at Alouette for a pet with a treatable condition.

“It’s usually a case where we discount things a little bit, and then the owners contribute something, and then the Jackson Fund adds some as well,” he said. It is not a replacement for paying for a pet’s operation however, certain criteria has to met in order to qualify. “[Owners] have to be doing all they can to help their end as well,” said Orser. For Balson and Elmo, she had run out of options as she already had an $800 bill from another veterinarian before Alouette, and she is overjoyed the Jackson Fund was able to help her and give Elmo his life back. She also held a yard sale on Saturday in her complex to raise some money. “I love him to death,” she said of Elmo. “I want to keep him around.” On Saturday morning, Elmo was still getting used to life minus one leg, but he was up and hobbling around, and Orser is confident he will make a full and healthy recovery. “It’s a big surgery to go through,” he said. Alouette dips into the Jackson Fund at least once a month, according to Orser, and he is so thankful people in the community opened their hearts to Elmo’s story. “With Elmo’s case I think it has all come from contributions,” he said. “We try to avoid euthanasia at all costs,” he added, “and we try to help pet owners as much as possible and do what we can.” Anyone can donate to the Jackson Fund at any time to help pets in our community. A man dub a dangerous sex offender, who’s living in Maple Ridge, was arrested and spent the weekend in jail waiting for a bail hearing. James Edward Harry, a 19year-old convicted sex offender, was slated to appear in court again Monday, after police arrested him Thursday for breaching conditions of his release. Last week, Ridge Meadows Mounties issued a warning to the public that Harry was living local and advised that police and probation officers would be James Harry keeping a close eye on his movements. He was arrested Thursday after allegedly leaving his apartment unescorted. That’s contrary to his bail release, confirmed RCMP Sgt. Jennifer Hyland, head of the local serious crimes unit. Harry appeared in court Friday, and was held over the weekend for a bail hearing set for Monday. Results were not available prior to press deadline. Conditions of his original release stipulated he have no contact with anyone under the age of 16 without an approved adult present. He was also prohibited from attending a public park or public swimming area where anyone under the age of 16 would be present, as well as day cares, schools, and playgrounds. He was not allowed to use a computer or the Internet to access or communicate with anyone under the age of 16, or visit any social networking site. But the condition, which he’s accused of contradicting, is the requirement to stay within his apartment, and not leave the halfway-house like facility unless he’s accompanied by a staff person or approved designate.

On Mother’s Day, Adrian Pannell was looking out onto the greenbelt behind his house when he saw a bear lumber along, lean against a tree and scratched its back. Pannell figured the bear was a male as it had no cubs with it, and was probably loosening some of its thicker winter coat off. “The bears are just starting to come out,” said conservation officer Paul McFadden, who noted bear sightings are being reported in the area. Bear season is from May until November, and McFadden cautioned local residents to make sure there are no attractants that would draw bears to residential areas and turn them into problem bears. Attractants include pet food, bird feeders, fruit from last season, and composts in rural areas. McFadden also said that in farming areas, animals and their feed should be well secured. Bears will also prey on goats, lamb, cats, and other smaller animals. The conservation office is starting to register complaints about bears in Maple Ridge, but so far they have only trapped two nuisance bears, one in Coquitlam, the other in Mission.

A local man, beaten unconscious during an early morning attack a few weeks ago, is still in hospital, fighting for life. Lausanne Ham is determined to fight cancer, one hip shake at a time. The Maple Ridge mom of two hosted a “learn to belly dance” class Sunday at the Dancing for Dessert Studio in Langley. “The belly dance went amazingly well,” she said, adding that about 20 people showed up for the class. The total money raised, after paying some costs, was $275, and Ham said more is coming in from people ordering extra copies of the CD and wanting to try another class. “We had a wonderful dance lesson with lots of laughter and sheer energy,” she said. Donations are going to the Canadian Cancer Society, and Ham’s fundraising goal is $500. “I’m from Iraq and belly dancing is in my blood,” said Ham, who, along with her family of 12, came to Canada from northern Iraq in 1995. “It’s who I am, it’s where I come from. Turn on the music and my body starts moving.” Ham said belly dancing is for people of all body types and the secret is to simply enjoy the movement. “If you focus on losing weight, you aren’t going to have any fun,” she said. “It’s the art of experiencing how beautiful it is to be a woman.” For the second consecutive year, Ham and her team are taking part in the cancer society’s Relay for Life event at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley. “I raised about $85 [last year] by practically begging

May the river remain cool Here we go again. The relatively cold spring has everybody talking about the weather. And all these decades after Mark Twain’s famous admonition, there’s still nobody doing anything about it. On the other hand, maybe that’s not such a bad thing. After all, the unusually cool spring may be a bane for gardeners and those who like to get out of their winter habits and into the outdoors, but it is part of what’s keeping last winter’s unusually large snow pack upriver where it belongs – or at least where we’d all like it to hang back so it can melt slowly and feed the Fraser River in bits and spirts. The alternative could put us where the folks on the Assiniboine River are right now – stressing over every inch that the water rises towards the tops of levies and dikes. Or watching the water inundate their farms through a controlled breach – a break created in hopes of staving off worse disaster downstream – and wondering if and how much government compensation might be coming to stave off personal disaster. Those of us who live along the Fraser River need to be aware of the mixed blessings that the waterway offers. The old timers who remember 1948 really aren’t that old. And the impressive results of the even greater flood of 1896 are awesome where they still are evident – for instance, the displacement of a mile of McMillan Island, shifting the main course of the Fraser to the Maple Ridge side of the river, and narrowing the Bedford Channel on the Langley side to a relative trickle. That’s the power of unchecked snow melt cascading down from the Interior, folks. It’s what’s wreaking havoc in Manitoba and Alabama, and also in our own province, at Prince George. Perhaps we ought to be thankful for our unseasonably cool spring. And thankful nobody has to be doing anything about it. – B.G.

Late release of oil spill news questionable Dear Editor,

I would like to know why news of Alberta’s disastrous oil spill that occurred Friday, April 29 was not released to the public until a convenient five days later, after the ballots for the federal election had been ‘safely’ cast? Was it the company itself, neglecting to report the spill to the Alberta government? Was it the government, federal or provincial, keeping the oily issue under wraps until after the election? Could the media have been in the loop, holding off on a big news story so as not to jeopardize a Conservative victory? One thing is for certain, all of these players would have had something to lose if word of 28,000 barrels of spilled oil was on voters’ tongues the weekend before a federal election. We will never know if a timely news release would have influenced the election of a majority government that supports Enbridge’s despicable twin pipelines from Alberta to Kitimat. But, there is still time to fight with tooth and nail against 1,170 km of oil that would surely spill into B.C.’s wilderness and waters.

Organization for Co-operation and Development (COED) concludes that the Canadian health care system needs substantial reform, with the private sector included, should we not step out of our comfort zone and seriously consider such advice? And when a distinguished economist such as the former Bank of Canada Governor David Dodge warns that the status quo is fiscally unsustainable, it can mean nothing less than that it will soon be impossible to pay for our health care system as we have it now, period. Another question to consider is “what it means to be making a profit?” If we think that there is no profit in the public system, we deceive ourselves. For example, how much profit do we think is built into the construction of massive and expensive hospitals? And what about the highly paid administrators, all working for a profit, namely their salaries, often accompanied by a lucrative severance or retirement package? A private company can often work much more efficiently, and therefore deliver better and speedier service, for less than the public sector, even after including their profit. Also, if a government engages the services of a private clinic, what is there to stop them from setting a rate not higher than, or even lower than, the cost of the public system for such a service? If an ordinary citizen like me, with no more than a high school diploma can clearly understand all this, leaders such as Jack Layton and Adrian Dix must surely understand this far better than me. That leads me to the opinion that they ignore the evidence purely for political reasons. This is admittedly my personal opinion, but nevertheless important. To add to that, they will never tell you that your pensions, by and large, depend on the profit Canadian corporations make, since most pension funds are invested in those corporations. To put it simply, no profit, no money for these funds and no pension money for us.

ICBC’s underlying premise (in its plan to raise insurance premiums on speeders) is false. They assume that our speed limits are set at a reasonable level in the first place, but in many cases, they are not. Travelling southbound over the Golden Ears Bridge is a good example

of setting the speed limit unreasonably low, but there are many others. The police then set up a radar trap in these artificially created “fishing holes” and issue tickets to otherwise law-abiding citizens. Kristina Gervais knows that a plethora of festivals in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows this summer will attract a multitude of new people to discover the wonders this community has to offer. Meadows Day coming up at the beginning of June, the Canada Day festivities, the incredibly popular Caribbean Festival over two days in July, and the long-standing fair, now called Country Fest, slated for July 23 and 24. But those are only the highlights of what’s going on in this community during the coming months, Gervais said, noting there’s also countless arts and cultural events speckling the summer calendar. New people pull into town every day. Some come to attend an event, some just to explore. But what most can’t help but realize – once they’re here – is what a “tremendous bounty” this area boosts, she said.

“We’re nestled up against the Golden Ears Mountains to the north and the Fraser River to the south. With such an abundance of natural amenities, as well as endless organized and spontaneous recreational and cultural opportunities all sandwiched in between, we obviously have reason to celebrate,” Gervais said. “Join us this summer. n a community synonymous with festivals and outdoor activities, Kristina Gervais is gearing up for a summer of fun. Pretty much year-round there’s community activities and events going on in these two communities, explained Gervais, executive director for Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. “Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have become known as the Cities of Festivals – and for good reason,” she elaborated. “Both communities host an array of annual festivals and events, perfect for the entire family. From visual and performing arts festivals to parades and street fairs… from community celebrations to agricultural and aviation fairs… there’s definitely something for everyone to celebrate in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.” One such example is the regular farmers’ markets that are held in both municipalities through the summer. Just after the Ridge Meadows Home Show at the Albion Fairgrounds, it was back to the 16th century this weekend as the Society for Creative Anachronism showed up in their historical costumes. The Albion Fairgrounds is the venue for a wide variety of events with Planet

Ice and the curling club providing indoor space, and the open fields and stage providing a venue for outdoor events. This summer, Country Fest will also take place at the Albion Fairgrounds on July 23 and 24. The fair features livestock and produce from local farms, as well as home crafts, and youth work. Ghost Ridge, a Halloween-themed fundraiser, dog shows and other events take place throughout the year in Albion. Maria Nobleza won an award from the The Municipal Advisory Committee on Accessibility Issues (MACAI) two years ago, and she is still pleased she was nominated in the first place. Nobleza owns Maple Ridge Vitamin Centre, and not only are the aisles in her stores wider to accommodate wheelchairs, but she makes sure those who may have more difficulty moving around her store on the popular discount days, have the option of another day to come. “We’ve tried to accommodate

If the pet has recently ingested the slug bait, we can often induce vomiting. In some cases that may be all that is needed. However, most pets are first discovered showing signs of convulsions, panting, and tremors. These pets must be treated intensively with intravenous fluids, sedatives to control seizures, and drugs to control the body pH and relax muscle tremors. In several cases this treatment may go on for up to three days until Metaldehyde has been metabolized in the body. With prompt treatment, many of these pets can be saved with no lasting effects. Every year we see several cases of slug bait poisoning. So, if you use slug bait, be sure to keep it out of reach of your pets.

ow that spring is here, and it is very wet, many people who enjoy gardening notice an abundance of slugs and snails around. In an attempt to get rid of these pesky plant eaters, many people start to sprinkle slug bait around. However, if you own pets, be very careful where you place it, because most slug bait is extremely poisonous to pets. Most slug bait contains a chemical called Metaldehyde. It comes in a pellet or liquid form. Unfortunately the pellets look and taste like dog or cat food and will attract pets. The liquid form is safer, but can still cause poisoning if ingested. Generally dogs are more prone to poisoning as they tend to eat anything, while cats tend to be more finicky about what they eat. Metaldehyde poisoning will cause incoordination, panting, rapid heart rate, muscle tremors, and usually lead to seizures. The pet will also experience high elevations in body temperature. Signs of poisoning will often develop within one to two hours of ingestion of

Season closes Local players Max Weselowski and Braden Bloom have reached the end of the Simon Fraser’s 2011 men’s lacrosse season. Athlete bounces back from injuries

A young gymnast from Maple Ridge is turning heads on the national stage. by Amy Judd

When Kendra Hromek’s mom Debbie put her daughter in gymnastics at age six, she just wanted her to have some fun and meet some new people. “We were never a gymnastics family,” said Debbie. “It wasn’t the intent to put her in competitive at all. She just kind of liked it.” But now, six years later, Kendra has reached the national-novice level, and is going to the national championships in Prince Edward Island next week for the first time. She recently competed in Grand Prairie at the Western Canadian Gymnastics competition, and qualified to represent Team BC at the competition in P.E.I. She will be competing in balance, vault, floor, and bars. Kendra is very humble about her success and achievements and is happy just to train and compete, and to get to travel to so many places. “I just like being able to do something different,” she said. “Not a lot of people do gymnastics that I know.” Debbie said Kendra once told her “there’s no feeling like doing a new skill.” Kendra has many skills already, but likes the uneven bars the best, and finds that to be her easiest event.

Kendra likes the uneven bars the best, left, even though her height can sometimes be a problem. She said the balance beam, above, can be one of her hardest events as it is so narrow and quite challenging.

Every achievement of Kendra’s this year is made even more special by the fact that she was injured last year, and had to come back from that to compete again. She fractured her wrist and had problems with her Achilles

tendon, but that doesn’t seem to have slowed her down much. She practices 24 hours a week at TAG Sports in Port Coquitlam under coaches Barb and Krystal Fraser. Due to the hectic schedule she does have to miss some school,

but Debbie said Kendra’s teacher at Kanaka Elementary, Jody Nagy, has been great about helping her keep up. Kendra just seems to take it all in stride. “She’s not a nervous competitor,” said Debbie, who admitted she can get pretty nervous watching her only daughter out there on the mat and apparatus. “You never know,” she said. “One injury and it’s over.” “It would be nice to make it to the Olympics,” said Kendra, “but that only happens for a few lucky people.” She said she likes to make smaller goals, from year to year, that she can then work on achieving for that year before she moves on to the next. Her goal this year was to make it to nationals, which she has done. “I’d like to go to both nationals and westerns next year,” she said, looking ahead, “and I’d like to place good.” She is also trying to master a double-flip backwards. “Some days it’s harder than others,” she said, “but otherwise it’s pretty easy.” Even though Kendra does have to miss some school, and miss out on some opportunities, she said gymnastics has made her very happy. She might even be able to use her skills to get a scholarship to a university, although she has no idea what she wants to be yet. For now she is focusing on nationals, and wants to get a score of 50 – this is comprised of all her scores in the individual four events, which are then added up to create a final score. “It would be her first time,” said Debbie, of Kendra’s goal of getting a 50. But in gymnastics, with the scores so close together, a 50 could be in the middle of the group, and a 51 could be in the top 10. Kendra is just excited to go and see eastern Canada, compete in the sport she loves, and see where it takes her. She’s open to any possibility. “It’s a tough sport, it’s not easy,” said Debbie. “Sometimes it can be grueling, sometimes it can be fun.”

Twins Sr. men’s baseball club is hosting the Twin Cities Invitational at Larry Walker Field from Wednesday, May 18, to Monday, May 23. The tournament will feature both local teams in the Lower Mainland Baseball Association, the Maple Ridge Jerks and the Ridge Meadows Twins, along with the Ridge Meadows Royals from the

B.C. junior league. Eight teams in total from all around B.C. will be taking part, including the Richmond A’s, Langley Expos, Aldergrove Cubs, Gibsons Jays, and Howe Sound Cannons. The feature event of the tournament will be the Saturday night home-run derby, featuring 16 excollege and pro-sluggers including former Toronto

Blue Jay and Canadian Olympian Simon Pond, who is now playing with Howe Sound. “This event will only help grow baseball in the community as it gives the opportunity for youth players to see ex-pros, NCAA, and junior college players compete all weekend free,” said Adam Tupper, a member of the Twin Cities Organizational

It’s just half a haircut, so Cale Reining gets to pay less when he gets his mullet trimmed at Slyce in Osprey Village, the “official sponsor” of his charity “Mullet with meaning.” The 20-year-old Pitt Meadows resident started sporting a mullet about a year ago, but recently decided to turn it into a fundraiser for the charity sponsored by his hockey heroes – Canuck Place, a hospice for children. “It’s the 21st century – you can’t rock a mullet without a meaning,” Reining said. The self-proclaimed, lifelong Canuck fan said he doesn’t have the hockey talent of his heroes on the Canucks team like Ryan Kessler and Roberto Luongo who can support Canuck Place with their star power. But he wanted to help the non-profit in his own small way, so growing a mullet and getting people to pledge money for his efforts to Canuck Place is his way to help out. He wanted to see any money he raised help children who are dying of cancer and their families. “If there’s a place to give [money], it’s them,” he said. Reining’s mullet was inspired by Tanner Glass, the fourth-line checker on the Canucks team. He is also currently sporting a playoff beard, which he doesn’t really like but does to support his team. The Pitt Meadows Secondary grad currently works at Boston Pizza in Meadowtown Centre as a bartender. With the playoffs going well for the Canucks, Reining said he enjoys the atmosphere at work. “I really like working Canucks games,” he said. Reining’s goal is to raise $1,000 for the pediatric hospice, and he is over the half-way point already. At first, a pledge form at his workplace yielded a few hundred dollars. But Reining has now registered online on the Canuck Place website, which has helped raise more money.
