Queensland’s Best Kickboxers in Town

The very best of Queensland’s Kickboxers travelled from as far as Cairns on Sunday 21st May to compete at Canungra. Fighters from Mackay and Airlie Beach joined locals and fighters from Brisbane and the Gold Coast to compete in eight Queensland State Title Bouts, one South Pacific title (against New Zealand) and five novice bouts. The standard of fighting was very high with current National and International champions facing off. Local Daniel “D9” Jones opened the event with a Kids Kick Light bout, which finished in a draw. Some highlights of the day were local youth Joshua Torrens taking on Auckland’s Ollie Schmid. In a very highly contested bout, the local lad came out runner up to the very experienced and older kiwi. Another standout fight on the day was Mackay’s Tyson Faulkner against North Lakes’ Andrew Coakley. This was a very close split decision with the winner and new 69kg State Champion, Tyson Faulkner. The final fight of the Main Card was Corey Nicholson from The Fight Centre Brisbane who took on three time Italian National K1 Champion, Salvatore Signorino, in a action packed 54kg State title. With the Italian now living in Cairns this was definitely Corey’s biggest contest to date. Showing true Aussie grit alongside great technique and clean shots, Corey managed to take the win with a unanimous decision from all three judges. A special thanks to all the local business who got behind this event: Aquis, Dart

Residents Still Struggling Following Floods

As number of residents are still homeless following ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie. One resident, who preferred not to be named, said the large number of properties affected by the flooding meant a lengthy delay in processing their insurance claim. They are still unable to live in their home, and have had to move betwen various forms of accommodation since 30th March. “We haven’t been able to start work repairing our home yet. We left with only the clothes we were wearing and we are still wearing those clothes and washing them,” said the resident. While insurance covers the cost of accommodation, the resident said they have had to move every few days as there is no accommodation available for longer term stays. “We are looking at another three months before we can move back into our home,” they said. In addition to financial stress, the personal cost of being unable to get back into a routine is taking its toll on the family. They will still have to undertake the clean up of their property when they return.

Mayor Greg Christensen said Council sympathises with those residents impacted by property inundation. “While a large number of us have been able to resume our day-to-day lives, for many the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone will be long-lasting; particularly for those who’ve lost property and possessions, some not for the first time, at the hands of Mother Nature,” said Mayor Christensen. “Council continues to work closely with State agencies to connect people affected by the disaster with available support services and financial assistance as part of the community recovery from this disaster.” In the days following ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie, Council advocated to higher levels of government to secure Category C disaster assistance for the region which includes a range of short and long term financial measures for residents and business. Council has also worked in partnership with the State Government to develop a Local Disaster Recovery Plan for the Scenic Rim community. This plan, which is available on Council’s website, forms part of Operation Queensland Recovery launched recently by the Premier.

Although some properties have been affected by major flooding several times in the last decade, Council is not considering the introduction of a property buy-back scheme, similar to Brisbane City Council’s Residential Property Buy-Back Scheme. Mayor Christensen said it is difficult to discern where such a program could begin and end across the large geographic footprint of the Scenic Rim. “I don’t believe it is fair, reasonable or realistic to suggest that Council should underwrite the outcomes of private decisionmaking in relation to properties,” he said. “The City of Brisbane has spent more than $35 million to date on a voluntary buyback scheme for floodprone properties. However, there are a range of qualifying criteria, including that the subject residence is likely to be inundated once every two years.” “Council will continue to improve the information available to the community to help guide future development and decisionmaking, such as regional flood mapping. However, decisions of the past are decisions of the past, and are measured against the standards of the time.”

Canungra Valley Markets are held on the last Sunday of each month at the Canungra School of Arts Hall in Pine Street, Canungra. Organisers Sue Kenna and her Mum Judy have recently handed over managment of the Markets to Bronni Van Beek and Tasha Boyd. Sue and Judy started the Markets several years ago and have done a great job with this not for profit venture which returns stallholder fees to the Hall. Bronni and Tash are looking forward to welcoming new stallholders to the Markets over the next few months to join current stallholders with baked goods, plants, crafts, painting massage therapy and soaps.

Bronni said they have adjusted the Market hours for winter - with Markets held on the last Sunday each month from 8am until 2pm. “We are looking forward to having some new stallholders in July,” said Bronni. “We will have someone selling fruit and vegetables as well as a new niche stall which sells balloon gifts - great for baby showers or birthday gifts,” she said. Bronni and Tash would like to hear from any community groups who would be willing to run the sausage sizzle on a rotational basis with other groups.

They are also looking for a pet groomer/ pet hydrobath business that would be interested in setting up at the Markets each month. “I think it would be a great opportunity for people to be able to bring their dogs along for a wash each month,” said Bronni. Stall site fees are only $10 per stall, with community stalls free of charge. For bookings or more information contact Tash on 0432 569 963 or Bronni on 0448 471 552 or email bronni57@gmail.com.

Beechmont Roadworks

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) are undertaking nightworks on Beechmont Road, between Brushbox Road and Bottletree Lane, in Lower Beechmont. Work started June 2017 and will take approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting. This work will include pavement investigations, geological assessments, drilling and survey works. To minimise traffic impacts on this road, these works will be undertaken from 5pm to 12am, Monday to Friday. Changed traffic conditions will apply, including intermittent lane reductions and reduced speed limits, with traffic control in place. Residents and businesses can expect some noise, dust and vibration during roadwork activity. The community will be kept informed of the upcoming traffic changes via electronic message signs, traffic alerts and updates on www.qldtraffic. qld.gov.au. Motorists should allow additional time for their journey, or use an alternative route where possible. Please be assured, the project team will make every effort to minimise the impacts to local residents and businesses in the area.

Scenic Rim Eat Local Week

Scenic Rim Eat Local Week plates up from 24th June, with a delicious schedule of food and farming events. The festival of food and farming is now in its seventh year and showcases the bounty of fresh produce, wine, beer, milk and gourmet products that grow in the region’s fertile volcanic soil. This year’s festival runs from 24th June to 2nd July and features more than 90 individual events – from farm tours, to cheese and wine tastings, to cooking classes and exclusive producer dinners, curated by some of Brisbane and the Gold Coast’s leading chefs. Eat Local Week culminates in a signature event, the Winter Harvest Festival, on Saturday 1st July at Aratula. On this day, the region’s producers come to one location to sell their produce. The day features free kids rides and activities, a Tractor Pulling competition, live music and cooking demonstrations by leading chefs. Scenic Rim Mayor, Cr Greg Christensen, says while Eat Local Week has grown significantly since it first started the core principles remain the same – to connect consumers with the people who grow their food and provide a real food experience.

• Lunch With Caudan Street Kitchen @ The Chalet: 2 July @ 11:00 am. Join us in the olive grove for a Mauritian-inspired soiree, including dishes featuring local produce. Traditional Sega music and dancers audience participation is essential. Try your hand at making traditional Roti & flat breads in the outdoor kitchen and then enjoy your own fresh roti and lunch on the grove. • In The Raw Local Producer Talk – Canungra: 26 July @ 12:00 pm. Come and meet Jack from ‘Jack and the Mushroom Stalk’. He’s a local producer of organic mushrooms and he will explain the health benefits of eating organic mushrooms. Try and buy his mushrooms, including some exotic varieties.

TO 2nd JULY - IN THE SCENIC RIM “This is an authentic celebration of the range of fresh produce which grows in the fertile Scenic Rim,” he says. “People are often surprised to discover just how much of their food is grown in this region, just one hour’s drive from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “The event is held during the first week of the school holidays and it’s a really unique opportunity for people to give their children an insight into the paddock to plate journey. “Some of the experiences on offer are a visit to Queensland’s largest carrot farm, an open day at a robotic dairy, a Farm Gate Festival in the Lost World, a Beer & Brewing night, a crop to Cup tour at a Tamborine Mountain coffee plantation and an open day at the Scenic Rim’s new Camel Dairy.” The Scenic Rim Council has partnered with several leading Brisbane and Scenic Rim chefs, who will represent the region as Eat Local Week ambassadors. Our ambassadors are Cameron Matthews executive chef The Spicers Group and Long Apron Clovelly Estate Montville, Josue Lopez executive chef QAGOMA, Javier Codina Moda Restaurant & Events, Glen Barratt executive chef Wild Canary, Ash Martin, executive chef Homage Restaurant Spicers Hidden Vale, Alison Alexander QLD Food Fellow, Caroline Jones Three Girls Skipping, Brenda Fawdon co-author Scenic Rim Eat Local and Peter Scudamore-Smith Master of Wines Uncorked & Cultivated. The regional food ambassadors will be involved in various ways in the lead-up to, and during, Eat Local Week. Cr Christensen says some Eat Local Week highlights include a producer’s lunch at Wild Canary Restaurant; Lunch with the Lambs at Towri Sheep Cheesery with Cameron Matthews; camel and chook

day; and cooking demonstrations at the Winter Harvest Festival. “We said we would bounce back after the floods and here is the proof! Bring your children and get muddy on a local farm, enrol in a cooking class, take the family on a bush tucker experience, or leave the kids at home and attend one of many incredible gourmet food experiences on offer,” he says. It’s a Classic - Ray Owen Bike Show

Hundreds of motor cycles descended on Canungra Showground on Sunday 8th May for the Ray Owen Classic Bike Show and Swap Meet. The Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland, Tamborine Mountain Area hosted this event which showcased veteran bikes through to 1986 models.

Perfect weather led to record bike numbers and crowds on the day. With some incredible restored machines on display, it was a great event for locals and visitors alike. Whether a motor cycle enthusiast or just a local heading over for a look, there was no denying the quality of the machines on

display and the enthusiasm of the people who own and restore the bikes. The Main Ring of the Showground was full of swap sites, where visitors could buy everything from bike parts to classic bikes, as well as information stands for many Clubs from around the Gold Coast.

There’s A Story To Be Told

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

When doing nothing is the best option We all have stuff that happens in life and, humans being what we are, we tend to react - or overreact. We get angry, hurt, sad or excited and these emotions lead to irrational thinking and actions that can exacerbate the situation. But there is another option - doing nothing. Economist Ofer H. Azar at Ben-Gurion University in Israel studied professional soccer goalkeepers and how they act to stop a penalty kick at goal. With a player sending the ball towards them at 100kph or more, the goalkeeper has a fraction of a second to work out how to block the shot. He analysed data on more than 300 kicks, and the researchers calculated the action most likely to prevent a goal being scored. Surprisingly, it is standing in the centre of the goal and doing nothing until the trajectory of the ball can be seen. This resulted in a 1 in 3 success rate — than the average of 4 out of 5. In a culture of instant gratification, doing nothing can be exactly what is needed. We see reactionary behaviour everywhere - in politics, from celebrities, in the playground, at work. Maybe it is time we tried that other option. That’s what I’ll be doing. Sitting in my office doing nothing, waiting until the trajectory of the ball can bee seen.

The “Word on the Street” is that the Scenic Rim Writers group is looking beyond its own circle to produce an anthology of stories drawing on the region’s colourful road and place names. Submissions from writers of all ages are invited for possible inclusion in the anthology which, under the title of “Word on the Street”, will explore possible meanings and untold stories behind some of the Scenic Rim’s signposts and local landmarks. Entries may be from 200 to 1000 words and can be works of fact, fiction or pure fantasy. Is there a supernatural story to Witches Chase? Does Dog Leg Gully have a canine connection or were there dastardly deeds at Double Crossing Road? Perhaps there’s a love story to the Bromelton Bridge named for Mary Ellen? Was Ugly Gully Road really unattractive or does Snake Gully Road have more than its share of serpents? Contributions of all genres will be considered and will be judged on their literary merit, their relevance to the Scenic Rim theme of “Word on the Street” and their interest to the public. Entries close on 30th June, 2017. Enquiries and entries can be emailed to to writingthescenicrim@gmail.com stating name, address, age (if a child or young adult) and the story’s word count.

Call for Recycling Centre at Tip Local resident Marie Ammala has requested Scenic Rim Regional Council investigate a recycling service for Canungra, similar to the Logan Recycling Market. Marie said she often sees people throwing items away that could easily be reused or recycled when she takes her own rubbish to the Canungra Waste Transfer Station. Marie said she sees the provision of a Recycling Market as an opportunity to provide employment in the area as well as assist in reducing the landfill in our region. The Market would see an employee sort some of the waste and retain what can be recycled which would then be sold on to contribute to the cost of running the facility. Currently Canungra Waste Transfer Station has an E-Waste Recycling facility where residents can leave many electronic household items that can be taken to these sites for recycling, including: Television, Printer, Scanner, Photocopier, Flat Screen Monitors, Laptop, Docking Station, Keyboard, Computer Mouse, Palm Pilot /Hand Held Devices, External Modem, Peripherals, PABX Systems, Data Projector, Switch/Hub Devices, Server, Main Frame, Router, Tape Drives, Server Racking, Cables, Telephones, Mobile Phone, Sandwich Maker, Electric Heater, Microwave, Kettle, Camera, VCR Player, DVD Player, Hi-Fi System, Speakers, Video Recorder, iPod /MP3 Player, Toaster, Vacuum Cleaner, lron, Typewriter. While these items can be left at the Station, they are not able to be bought and sold or taken from the Station by residents. Marie has put in an official request to Council and has been advised that the request will be considered at the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s meeting in June. Marie would be interested in speaking to people who would support this initiative and can be contacted on 5543 7269.

Bigger Screen for More Action at Rodeo

Photo: Mark Connop

Canungra Hotel Rodeo will look bigger and better in 2017 with the addition of a 15 square metre screen to ensure everyone gets a great view of the action in the main arena. The best of South-East Queensland’s cowboys will be there on Saturday 8th July for all the traditional Rodeo events - bull ride, bareback ride, barrel racing and steer ride for the crowd to enjoy. Visitors to the Rodeo will be able to test their own buck jumping skills with a mechanical bull on site, as well as children’s rides, western and country clothing outlets and a wide variety of food stalls. Society President, Airlie Worrall said the Society is a not for profit organisation which has invited other community organisations to benefit from the Rodeo on 8th July and the Canungra Show, held on 26th August. “The Canungra Bowls Club will be running the canteen on the day and the Mudgeeraba Trail Riding Club is helping by using their volunteer members for the parking,” she said. Canungra Hotel Rodeo is held at Canungra Showground, Coburg Road, Canungra with main events commencing at 2pm, and pre-performance from 11am. Due to an unexpected large crowd in 2016, the Canungra AH&I Society is offering online ticketing for the first time. Patrons can save by buying tickets from www. ticketebo.com.au/canrodeo. End of Financial Year Stationary, Printers and Inks available!

Cancer Can Be a Scary Word By Tracy Rossi Many of us have been touched by cancer, but we don’t seem to know enough. Like so many, I have been touched personally. My great grandfather and my grandmother died of cancer; my father has been battling terminal lung cancer for the last 2 1/2 years, even though he was given only six months to live. Recently my father in law was diagnosed with bladder cancer and has began his fight with this nasty invader. This has made me take stock of my family’s lifestyle to see how I might be able to prevent this illness. I have been busy researching the internet to find out as much as I possibly can about cancer. I have been shocked by what I found. What is cancer? Cancer is a diverse group of diseases in which some of the body’s cells become abnormal and begin to multiply. The abnormal cells can invade and damage the tissue around them and spread to other parts of the body, causing further damage. How common is cancer in Australia? In 2012, there were 122,093 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Australia. In 2016, it is estimated 130,466 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Australia. In 2016, it is estimated that the risk of an individual being diagnosed with cancer by their 85th birthday will be one in two. After my research, I have concluded…there has definitely been an increase in incidence of cancer diagnosis but the good news is, there has also been a decrease in the mortality rates from cancer (Reference: www.canceraustralia.gov.au/ cancer-australia-statisitics). This tells me we are becoming more aware and more proactive as a society. Science is helping us fight with the advancements of new technologies and nature is also playing its part and can also be an integral component to combat this disease. We need to be open to the possibilities, continuing investigating, researching prevention and cures, for our loved ones and ourselves. Some wonderful insightful websites that I would like to share with you are www.thruthaboutcancer.com, www.chrisbeatcancer.com and an American web site www.foodrevolution.org (Editor’s note: these web sites are considered ‘alternative’ and not recognised by the medical profession). You may or may not know me, but I am an independent real estate agent living in the area. I am pledging to donate $150 to Cancer Council Queensland from every successful sale from any new exclusive listings. Let us work together, to give a good cause a helping hand! For those who have lost loved ones, I offer you my heartfelt sorrow and for those who are fighting their battle, I wish you lots of hope, love and light.

Sport Grants Open

Around the State

Members of the Scenic Rim sport and recreation community are encouraged to apply for funding assistance through Council’s 2017/18 Sport and Recreation Program, from Monday 29 May 2017. Mayor Greg Christensen said the Scenic Rim sport and recreation community provide a valuable contribution to supporting a healthy and active lifestyle. “These grants assist not-for-profit sport and recreation groups with capital projects, equipment, construction materials and leveraging larger funding opportunities for the maintenance and improvements of their facilities,” Mayor Greg Christensen said. “Enshrined in Council’s Community Plan is a healthy, engaged and resourceful community, with these grants critical in achieving this through strengthening social connections and building community ties through sport and recreation.” The scope of projects eligible for funding under the program include: • the purchase of equipment or construction materials; • infrastructure or facility improvements; • field or surface upgrades; and • leverage funding for larger infrastructure grants. Council’s Sport and Recreation grants program is able to provide leverage opportunities for clubs preparing to apply for larger facilities projects, such as the Queensland Government’s Get Playing Places and Spaces program which opens on 19 June. Clubs are encouraged to contact Council’s Healthy and Active officers on 5540 5111 if they are considering submitting an application. Applications must be submitted to Council by close of business, Monday 26 June 2017. Fire Ant Eradication Funding

The Federal Budget commits $1 billion to the National Landcare Program and the Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has given an undertaking to use part of these funds to continue work to eradicate fire ants from South-East Queensland. Fire Ants are a major threat for farmers across many agricultural industries - left uncontrolled, the cost of fire ants in Australia is estimated to be between $5.3 billion and $45 billion over the next 20 to 70 years. If you see any fire ants or mounds that you think may be fire ants call the Department of Agriculture Fire Ant hotline on 13 25 23, or take a photo on your mobile and report online at www.daf. qld.gov.au.

Bowel

cancer screening and prevention

When people turn 50 – and at intervals afterwards – they receive a free screening kit that helps detect bowel cancer early. While around 450,000 Queenslanders are sent screening kits each year, less than 40 per cent are returned. Many people who receive the kit either forget about it or are hesitant to complete the test – this is a concern as bowel cancer is a major cause of cancer related death for both men and women with around 80 Australians dying from the disease every week. The good news is, if detected early up to 90% of cases can be successfully treated – so if you are eligible please take the test! Call the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program Information Line on 1800 118 868 for general questions regarding the Program or to order a replacement screening kit. Alternatively visit www.qld.gov. au/bowelscreen for more information.

Green Team Out and About

By Fiona Williams The Green Team went on an excursion to the Jacob’s Well Environmental Education Centre on the 12th May. The Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre is an Education Queensland facility located 20km from Beenleigh. It is in close proximity to the islands and waterways of southern Moreton Bay and with its varied natural habitats enables the Centre to offer a unique range of environmental education programs. Programs are designed around, habitats such as mangrove wetlands, salt marshes, sheltered waterways, islands and coastal forests of southern Moreton Bay. We learnt a lot about different bush tucker plants we could plant at our school, we also got to see their vegetable gardens and worm farms. One of the favourite things we did was meeting the animal friends they have there like Agro the massive Python, the blue tongue lizard that gave everyone kisses and the turtle was quite entertaining, also the whale bones were quite impressive. The kids also had fun playing on the interactive life size musical instruments. Thanks to the staff for making our trip educational and fun, the children have brought back lots of ideas for our school Green Team.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

EAT LOCAL WEEK

This event was launched in Brisbane at Moda Events and was attended by numerous local producers and increased numbers of chefs, food and wine and tourism journalists who were certainly very interested in the quality produce we have in the Scenic Rim. The event booklets are out in the community, at libraries and visitor information centres and a number of retail shops. If you would like a booklet and cannot find one please contact me and I will ensure you receive one. Don’t forget the Winter Harvest Festival at Aratula which is an annual and growing event as the grand finale to Eat Local Week - a fun, family event.

FEDERAL BUDGET BENEFITS OUR REGION

The recent announcements in the Federal Budget are particularly significant for our growing region with an $8.4 billion commitment to the long talked about Inland Rail project - another nation building project which will involve the Bromelton State Development Area providing jobs, business growth and enhanced rail freight connectivity. Funding for the SEQ City Deals project, involving an all-levels of government contribution to transport efficiency and infrastructure, was also very welcome. You will hear more about this in future months.

THANK YOU BLAZEAID

A very big thank you to BlazeAid, a simply amazing group of grey nomad volunteers who travel around Australia assisting farmers and their families after natural disasters. They are currently being hosted by Rathdowney Memorial Grounds and have assisted a number of farmers in the Illinbah and Sarabah area with fence clearing and repair following the cyclone. Our community are very grateful for your kindness and friendship. Thank you also to Canungra Op Shop and Bren who provided work clothes and boots and to Canungra Yoga for the donation of over $700 which has brought kitchen equipment that will travel with the crew.

The Cosmic Skydome is a circular theatre where the audience lie back on reclined theatre seats to watch shows that are projected by a state-of-the-art optical star projector onto the huge domed ceiling, which allowed them to have a 180ยบ view of the action, the night sky and outer space! This amazing surround-screen provided a really unique and immersive experience for the students and also the teachers! The students have been studying the solar system in Science and this experience allowed them to deepen their understanding. Thanks go to Mrs Mann, Mr Owen and Mr Melville for organizing the trip and accompanying the students. Also a big congratulation to the students for their excellent behaviour.

Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) By Melissa Whitby

Luna (Animal ID 58341) (Female, 5 years) Yes my original name is Rudolph, but I am affectionately known to the lovely staff and volunteers here at the shelter as Rudy. I’m a beautiful girl who really doesn’t want to share my humans with other cats, but given time I may be ok with cat savvy dogs. Did I mention I also love to play? Dangle a piece of string in front of me and I will play for hours! Don’t tell the other cats but I am a sucker for pats and will follow you around weaving in between your legs while you go about your day. If you are after a girl who is happy soaking up all the love by herself in the household come and meet me today!

Patrick (Animal ID 51010) (Cattle dog x Border Collie, 18 months) Hello! My name is Patrick (because I am as good looking as Patrick Swayze!) and I am just a delight! I am toilet trained, well behaved inside and am good with older kids and even horses. I love to play with other dogs so would make a great second dog or would love to go for trips to the dog park. I would love to learn some cool tricks as I have a clever mind, plus it’s a fun way for us to spend time together! Come on in and meet me today!. To meet any of the animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

In March I was lucky enough to travel to Hawaii to work with endangered forest birds on the island of Kauai. Whilst much of my time was spent in the mountains of Kauai, I also observed some of the seabirds that make Kauai home. The most enigmatic and captivating seabird was the Laysan Albatross. This beautiful bird is the most common Albatross species, which may be encountered in the Hawaiian Islands. On the island of Kauai, the birds nest in several locations and I saw them in the neighbourhood of Princeville which also happens to be one of the ritziest places to live for humans on the island! I observed Laysan Albatross nesting in peoples’ backyards and met and became friends with Cathy Granholm who monitors the birds in this location. Thankfully, due to the work undertaken by Cathy and local residents of Princeville, the nesting population of Laysan Albatross in this location are well protected. From November to July, is the time when birds are nesting on Kauai. I was lucky enough to observe large chicks in March at Princeville. Laysan Albatross are easily recognised by their size and colouring. The birds have blackish-grey upper-wings and the back, tail, head and underparts are white. Laysan Albatross The Hawaiian Islands is where most of the population of Laysan Albatross is located. Although the Laysan Albatross appears to be holding steady throughout their range, the birds are considered near-threatened. Two common threats to the birds are long-line fishing and the ingestion of floating plastic. Laysan Albatross predominately feed on sea creatures such as squid but will eat fish and crustaceans. For anyone visiting Kauai, Laysan Albatross can also be seen at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge when the birds are nesting. Of all the native birds I encountered in Hawaii, the Laysan Albatross was one of my favourites. If you would like to learn more about the Laysan Albatross, check out my friend’s Cathy Granholm’s blog at https:/Albatrossdiary.com to see the great work that she does monitoring the birds in Princeville.

Hendra Virus Case Confimed

Rotting Away By Susan Cully The recent wet, warm autumn weather has favoured the mushrooms and fungi. There are many species bursting out of the soil and out of wood in the rainforest. These beautiful Pholiota spp mushrooms are devouring this log left to rot in the Lamington National Park. A single spore, operating like the fruit or seeds of plants, can be carried by the wind, or by insects or by slugs and snails, from one part of the forest to another. Where it lands it will develop into a fungal organism, it will begin the transformation of a fallen tree into the foundation of an essential forest food chain. These mushrooms will be eaten by Potoroos, Native Rats, Land Mullets, and Native Snails and Slugs. Native Ants, Termites and Cockroaches will set up their living quarters in the rotting wood, digesting the wood as a primary resource or ingesting the material softened by fungus or making use of the sanctuary provided by the log. The log is transformed into apartment-block living with room for lizards and snails and leeches to nest, breed, lay eggs and shelter their offspring. Because the Lamington, Beechmont, Tamborine and Springbrook Plateaus represent an overlap zone for species spreading down from the Northern Tropics and up from the Southern Temperate Rainforests, these forest provide a spectacular variety of flora and fauna. Fungus breaks down fallen leaves and fallen wood providing an essential service to the forest.

Biosecurity Queensland is managing a new Hendra virus case in a horse in the Gold Coast Hinterland area after a positive test result was received on 25th May. Queensland Chief Biosecurity Officer Dr Jim Thompson said one horse was euthanased on the property after rapid deterioration. “Tracing and risk assessments are being undertaken on any animals that may have had contact with the infected horse to work out if further testing needs to be done,” Dr Thompson said. “We will work with the property owners to ensure the risk is contained on the property.” Queensland Health’s Public Health experts are assessing the situation today to determine if any humans had contact with the infected horse, and stands ready to provide any assistance, counselling, information, testing or treatment that may be required. Dr Thompson said this was the first case of Hendra virus in Queensland this year. “Hendra virus infection can occur throughout the year, so it’s important that horse owners take steps to protect themselves and their animals at all times,” he said. “Vaccination is the single most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses. It is recommended that horse owners speak to their veterinarian about vaccinating their horses. “The deceased horse had not been vaccinated for Hendra virus. “If a horse becomes sick, owners should contact their veterinarian immediately. People in contact with horses need to remember to continue to practise good biosecurity and personal hygiene measures even if a horse is vaccinated against Hendra virus.” The Australian Veterinary Association says Hendra virus has posed a number of challenges for horse owners, equine veterinarians, government agencies, equine industries and the general public since it was first identified in 1994. Since then, outbreaks occurred sporadically in coastal Queensland as far west as Chinchilla, and from the Queensland border to as far south as Kempsey on the Mid-North coast of NSW. In disease outbreaks so far recorded, the virus has not been shown to be highly contagious, however it is highly lethal. In 2012, a safe, effective horse vaccine became available and it is the single most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra virus infection and provides a work health and safety as well as a public health benefit. For more information on prevention of Hendra virus or biosecurity steps in an incident, visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23. News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough You may have noticed St Luke’s has had a sign outside during the week saying, “Church Open”. This may have been seen by some as an invitation to come and enter, to others a very strange sign saying “Open” when churches are generally only for use on Sundays. Often, we categorize things such as church buildings, to have very specific uses. A church for many may be viewed as only open on Sundays, unless there is a wedding or a funeral happening. We would like you to see St Luke’s differently from that stereotype image. We would love it if the church was open every day of the year and people could just drop in any time they wanted and maybe stay awhile or just look and feel welcome. Have you ever been to visit someone and as you approached their front door you wondered what you would say or do. You wonder if you would be made to feel welcome. Who would greet you? What would the result of your visit be? Very often such apprehensive thoughts are unnecessary because once inside, any barriers you imagined did not exist and you were made to feel at home. St Luke’s has been taking part in an invitation to allow all people to come inside, feel welcome and just sit, or pray in peace and the quietness of the church. Sometimes people say they don’t know how to pray but there is no “proper” way to pray. At this time, my prayers are often for thankfulness as I enjoy the many blessings of my family, of the country side, the season of autumn and the peace of our nation. Just reflecting on what we have in our lives is a good starting point for prayer.

The Canungra Times - June 2017

This month, we were successful in our application for funding via the Canungra & District Community Bank! As a result, we are awaiting the arrival of a brand new line marking machine and a few of us on the committee are ridiculously excited! Our current machine has been loyal to the club for quite a number of years and we are so thankful it has held out for us. We’ll be using the new machine for the white lines and will (hopefully) continue to use the current machine for marking the U6/7s field in black. The grant also included sponsorship for our annual carnival which we will be hosting later in the year. A very big thank you to our local bank – your support is greatly appreciated! During May, the U12 competition changed from three divisions to four, due to Division 2 having too many teams. As a result our own U12 team have moved up a division and are now competing against a tougher crowd! Well done to Errol and his players for persevering through the younger age groups and finding form in your first year in a competition. Well done. Home games continue to draw small but vocal crowds and are great, regular events for our community to attend – don’t forget to keep an eye out on our Facebook page for upcoming evening and Saturday matches! Hoot hoot!

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby

Fitness equipment is ordered and going in between the basketball court and play park very soon. There will be temporary fencing around for a few days whilst the installation is happening. Please enjoy the new addition to Moriarty Park! Next Trivia night will be on Saturday 22nd July at 6.30pm. Please book a table of 1-6 people ($10 a table) with Bren on 0414 435 919 or email bren.dalby@bigpond.com. Sponsored again by wonderful Foodworks. BYO nibbles and drinks, and money for raffle please!! Fun evening for low cost! Next month look out for how Canungra Op Shop (Arkwood Christian Association) pulled out all the stops, with the Moriarty Park Committee, to help out some of our families after the Cyclone Debbie floods. We are still looking for people interested in social netball. We have a few names but need enough for two teams to be able to enjoy a game at Moriarty Park. Let Bren know if you would like to have a crack at it.

Pilates is proving popular and beneficial but plenty of room for more folk to come and enjoy the evenings with Alanna - enquiries 0409 752 997. Moriarty Park will be holding a Christmas in July Disco. Theme is “anything Christmassy”. Look out for that one! BOOK CLUB on second Tuesday of the month at 7pm. Run by Marie de Jonge look at Canungra Book Club on Facebook. Come along and have a look! Moriarty Park would still like a Secretary please! Meetings every third Tuesday of the month at 7pm.. All welcome.

Sportsperson of the Month

Most of the Canungra Owls U12 team (coached by Errol Irvine and managed by Ang Mackenzie) have been playing together for a couple of years and until now, have not had many winning experiences. In fact, the past couple of seasons have seen this age group struggle for players. In the off season,

we weren’t even sure a team would be made and now they have 16 players on the book! This is the first year most of the kids have been in a competitive league, where scores are kept and points are earned. The kids took it all in their stride and took to the big field like they’d been there before. In the first few games in the 2017 season, not only were they kicking goals, but they were winning by large margins. As a result, they have changed division and are now playing (and winning!) against tougher teams on the Gold Coast. We are so proud to have these kids as part of our Club. They have welcomed new team members, overcome past disappointments and have rallied together to become a hard working team that has proven that you get to start over again at the beginning of every season. Well done Canungra Owls U12s!
