Recognition for Outstanding Service By Keer Moriarty A lifetime of outstanding service to the Canungra community was recognised when Peter Geiger was awarded an Order of Australia Medal. In the Australian honours system, appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service. Peter has lived all of his life in Canungra and his commitment to the community has seen him undertake many roles. He was the inaugural Captain of the Canungra Auxiliary Fire and Rescue, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) in 1979 and remained the Captain until he retired from the service in 2015. Peter has been a volunteer with the Canungra Rural Fire Service since 1982 and is currently a Fire Warden. Other contributions to the community include: • Member, Canungra RSL Fishing Club; • Charter Member, past

President, Bulletin editor, Lions Club of Canungra, 23 years. • Inaugural President of Moriarty Park Sporting complex Canungra, 1986. • President of Canungra Rural Youth, 1972. • Proprietor/Director, Geiger Motors, 38 years. Peter and his wife, Mary-Lou were advised about the award prior to Australia Day, but were not allowed to tell anyone, even family. Mary-Lou rang their children to tell them to gather at their daughter, Nacole’s house at 11am on Australia Day for an announcement from their parents. “They were all talking about it and wondering what was going on,” said Peter. With the children gathered on Australia Day, Mary-Lou read out the Governor-General’s letter stating Peter had won the award. One of the projects Peter is most proud of is the establishment of the Canungra Ambulance

Service and commencement of construction which started in his term as President of the Lions Club of Canungra. “Dad was on the Ambulance Board, before the QAS days, and there was no ambulance station here,” he said. “The Lions Club started raising money for the station, about 18 months after the Club started.”

“We were just having raffles at the pub and got a lot of interest but struggled to get financial support from the town.” After a long meeting at the Canungra Hotel, Peter was happy to accept financial assistance from developer Mike Gore. This was enough to get the project underway. “We had $13,000 bucks, concreteers, brick-

ies, carpenters in the Lions Club.” “Within a month we had the slab down.” “Once the town saw it was happening, they really got behind it.” “ “We had a thermometer outside the post office showing how much money we’d raised.” Peter will be presented with the insignia of the award later this year.

HUMANS of CANUNGRA

By Keer Moriarty Photo by Katie O’Brien

You never have to wonder what Jodie Devlin is thinking, because she will tell you immediately - she’s known for her honesty.

I’ve known her since I was seven years old. She’s lived in Canungra for over 20 years and in that time she has helped a lot of people and become a mainstay of the community.

You’re one of those people in Canungra everyone knows, is that from working at the newsagent? How long were you there? I started off working with Jo and Norm in 1999. Beth (Jodie’s daughter) was three. Were you the only staff member? No, Carol Fitton and Di Hannel trained me in the job. It changed dramatically from the old tac-tac till to a computerised till and Lotto changed to all this computerisation. Jo and Norm really gave me my start there and when they sold they said I came with the newsagency. Paul and Shona (Kraayvanger) bought it and we had a lot of changes but it was the best working atmosphere, we had so much fun. Because of the type of people they are? Yes. I was also working at the motel with Jean and Stu Comley. Because my husband

at the time was quite ill, nobody actually saw him. The newer people who came into town thought Paul was my husband because Paul and I worked together and Shona was behind the scenes doing the bookwork. When I worked at the motel they thought Stu was my husband because I always referred to his mum, Jean, as Ma. And he called you “wifey”? He did. So someone would come and say, “I’ve just spoken to your husband”, and I’d ask which one? There was a choice of three. That would have started some good rumours in a small town! It was good fun! And there was this one really weird day when this random woman walked in and said “I know your face!”. I said, “Yeah I know yours too” thinking ‘ Who the hell are you?’. And I remember

backtracking for 25 years until we hit primary school and then we realised that we knew each other in primary school and I’ve gone “Now I know who you are”. Who was that? (laughing - it was me). It was you! You went from working at the newsagent to starting your own cleaning business. There was a definite need for somebody, so I learned quickly what was expected in town. It was word of mouth, there was no advertising bar a one line ad in The Canungra Times. The reputation grew. What you do is helping people, which is probably part of your nature... I have two fabulous staff members and they realise part of my role in my business is networking with clients. They become friends, we have a friend relationship and a business relationship. People know we’re

Jodie Devlin there to do a job and complete what’s needed but also that I’m gong to listen if you need to talk about your sore toe or sick dog. And every dog knows that Auntie Jodie’s got the dog treats! You also do community work, like the Show, is that something you’d recommend to people? If you want to meet people, have a bit of fun, you have to be involved in something. Working on the bar at the rodeo is the best night of the year. What’s so good about the rodeo?

Everyone is there to have a good time. All the guys behind the bar just party on - we dance, we groove and we hand out drinks and we have a great time. You meet so many different people and you see them year after year. They keep coming back? Keep coming back year after year! Hopefully we have that again this year. Certainly, because I really miss that atmosphere and fun.

CEO Saga Continues

By Susie Cunningham

A meeting called in an attempt to repeal Council’s decision not to re-appoint its CEO has ended with no vote and, instead, a decision to seek guidance from the state government. Mayor Greg Christensen requested Council convene the Special Meeting on 12 January to repeal Council’s previous decision not to re-appoint its Chief Executive Officer, Jon Gibbons. After six hours of heated deliberations, much of it in closed session, Councillors did not vote on the motion because Mayor Christensen said he “held a reasonable suspicion that there may exist a level of declarable

conflict for the majority of Councillors.” The repeal bid came after Councillors voted four votes to three on 9 November not to renew the contract of Mr Gibbons, which expires on 18 June 2022. In seeking to repeal the 9 November decision, Mayor Christensen said he believed Division 1 Councillor Derek Swanborough had a ‘declarable conflict of interest’ and was ‘unable to make an impartial decision’ about the re-appointment of the CEO. “I have been made aware of confidential matters and information which has provided further insight into the relationship between the CEO and Councillor

Canungra Battles COVID By Keer Moriarty There were only four cases of COVID-19 in the Scenic Rim throughout the pandemic, until the Queensland borders opened in December 2021. Canungra has not been immune to the disease, with over 50 cases reported during January, and people scrambling to find rapid antigen tests (RAT) to confirm a suspected diagnosis. Both illness and government directives advising close contacts to isolate led to staff shortages in several businesses, with some having to close their doors or adjust opening hours. “We reduced our trading hours in the peak week of infections, closing early to take the pressure of the staff we

did have available,” said Outpost Cafe owner, Andrew Covino. “We were very close to going to takeaway only as first option prior to closing but we do have the most incredible staff who went above and beyond to keep it going.” “Some long days by not only our long term seniors, but the most amazing school kid employees we have, lucky they were on holidays, making staying open possible.” “We had both Michael and myself go down with COVID, as well as multiple employees.” “As we employ many families, we not only lost the person who tested positive but the brother, sister daughter or son.” “This has definitely been the most taxing time in past 16 years here at The Outpost, keeping

Cr McConnell has been vocal about his unvaccinated status and said with the virus spreading rapidly within the community it was only a matter of time. “My journey with COVID-19 commenced with a sore throat and a cough on Monday 17 January 2022,” he said. “It developed throughout the day and overnight to include fatigue and muscle soreness with the cough worsening.” “I continued to display flu like symptoms.” Cr McConnell isolated at home in accordance

A New Chapter for This Busy Bee By Caitlyn Larkin What started off as a passion for gardening and native wildlife has led Alex Griffiths down the road of native bee education, healing and the Little Bees Secret Garden. Native bees crept into Alex’s life quietly, but she hasn’t been able to stop thinking about them ever since. “I discovered [native bees] and then decided that the community garden needed some, so I was very lucky to apply for a grant through the RSL at Nerang.” Alex and her two home-schooled sons embarked to learn about native bees together and it was then that she realised there were limited educational resources for children about the small

insects. “It really blew me away that Australian children are not learning about native bees.” “It all kind of evolved from creating my own resources for my kids to becoming absolutely addicted myself.” Around the same time Alex’s marriage ended, triggering her to look for a way to support herself and her two kids. “I had no idea what I was going to do, because I had previously left my dream job at the Queensland Police to raise my kids.” The idea to open Little Bee’s Secret Garden was born from needing a source of income, a place to heal, and Alex’s love of native bees. “ItJolion was the only thing fromme upright at that kept

times … my lifeline.” Fast-forward three years and Alex believes that the time has come for her to close this chapter of her life and move on to a new one. “I have a lot of opportunities rolling in at the moment, lots of people wanting to work with me so that’s sort of where I want to take the next steps.” Alex has recently taken on the role of secretary at the Australian Native Beekeepers Association, and is expanding her presentations and workshops, as well as her online blog. “When I get other people equally as excited about bees I think, my job here is done, I have got someone else addicted.” “That’s what I am here to do.”

New Date for The Long Sunset By Keer Moriarty The Scenic Rim’s newest music festival has been postponed but organisers are urging ticket holders to hold their tickets until the new date. The boutique live music event has shifted from February to April to ensure the safety of artists, punters and event staff during this challenging period. Originally set to take place on Saturday 12 February, the new event from the crew behind Queensland Music Trails has now set its sights on Saturday 30 April as the new date, with the safety of staff, artists, punters and the wider music community in mind. “We imagine The Long Sunset as a fun, safe, and relaxed live music experience in one of Queensland’s most evocative locations – The Scenic Rim.” “This is the promise we made when tickets went on sale, and it’s one we remain committed to delivering on,” said QMF

CEO Joel Edmondson. “We sincerely hope that ticket holders can attend on 30 April and share in a day to remember.” “We greatly appreciate the public’s support of the many artists and arts workers that are persisting through very challenging conditions to keep our live music culture alive.” Mayor of Scenic Rim Regional Council Cr Greg Christensen says having to move the event is disappointing, but the right decision under the circumstances to keep everyone safe. “We look forward to welcoming visitors to our beautiful region in April and suggest people take some time to plan their visit and consider adding a day or two either side to explore and experience all we have to offer in the Scenic Rim.” Festival organisers strongly encourage ticket holders to retain their tickets, which will be automatically valid for the new dates.

Angus and Julia Stone will perform at The Long Sunset on 30 April. Headlined by Angus & Julia Stone, Ball Park Music, and Babe Rainbow, The Long Sunset also features Queensland singer-songwriters Jack Gray, Clea, Asha Jefferies, Sofia Isella, and local DJ duo Cheek2Cheek. Unfortunately, due to the change in date, Hatchie is no longer available to perform.

The inaugural event will be a day of fantastic live music and local food, produce and crafts in Artisan Alley, giving visitors a taste of this vibrant region. Organisers say ticket sales have been strong and a limited number of tickets are still available for sale. Current ticket hold-

ers will receive an email from Moshtix detailing their options. Tickets for The Long Sunset are automatically valid for the new date, and buyers do not need to take any further action. Refunds will be available via Moshtix for those who cannot attend the new date.

“There is no Beauty without Decay” By Keer Moriarty Local artist, Ged Walker has been keeping history alive through his paintings. Ged was introduced to watercolours whilst studying Architectural Drawing at QUT. At that time watercolour painting was used as a method of creating hand drawn pictures of project buildings, prior to the build. He completed many presentation drawings in architects’ offices in the following years, ranging from shopping centres to residential high rise. He worked for a major project house builder on the Gold Coast, producing hand drawn and painted renderings of their houses, until the increased use of computers made this task redundant. Ged missed the painting he had done through his work, and began painting at home, continuing his interest in architectural renderings. He was drawn to old buildings and says he

loved the saying, “There is no beauty without decay.” His most recent work was a commissioned painting of the Canungra Uniting Church. This was the last of the churches in the town that Ged had painted. However, it is buildings on the edge of decay that hold the greatest interest for the talented artist. “For me, there is a point where that ‘decay’ reaches perfection, then begins to deteriorate to a stage where the building doesn’t inspire me anymore.” Ged says there are three things that can happen to an old building: • They are left to rot on the ground, • They are restored, • They are removed or knocked down. None of these options appeal to Ged, and each option causes him a sense of despair. “I feel a certain sense of duty to try and capture an old building when it is in it’s stage of perfec-

tion”. His work means buildings that have been demolished or renovated have been documented for future generations to appreciate. Unfortunately modern building techniques mean newer buildings will not age in the same way. “New composite cladding won’t weather like Australian hardwood and new paints wont flake and peel like the old lead based paints,” he says. “The custom orb roofing will never have that beautiful rusted patch work effect of the old, as now they can run sheets the full span of a roof”. Ged’s work captures the history of many significant buildings, including Canungra Cottages at 10 Appel Street (before renovation), Dale Mahony’s shed on Coburg Road, an old cottage on Lawton Lane (since demolished), Banka Banka at Wonglepong and Benobble house.

Greens Candidate for Wright Announced By Keer Moriarty The Australian Greens have announced their Federal candidate for the seat of Wright, ahead of the Federal election. Nicole Thompson, a nurse and a midwife by profession, has lived in the Scenic Rim for 14 years. She is a mother to a child with disabilities and has been a foster carer. “I’m mainly inspired to run as the candidate so there’s a chance to push for action on climate change,” she said. “But I have many social interests too. As a nurse I care about people, particularly vulnerable people.” “So, would like to see the NDIS fixed, mental health included in Medicare and women kept safe,” she said. Ms Thompson says she values the rural landscape, national parks and close knit communi-

ties in the Wright electorate. “I’m running for the Greens because I want to stand up for everyday Australians”. “I’m increasingly concerned about the course our country is on.” “We need to act now to tackle climate change and build a fair and compassionate society for everyone.” “That’s why I’m stepping up this election.” She lists the housing crisis as a major priority, stating the need for affordable, sustainable housing for everyone. Other Greens policies such as including dental care in Medicare are a high priority for Ms Thompson. “Our policies and values are based on science and kindness and contain the solutions to Australia’s problems.” At the time of print a date for the Australian Federal election had not been set.

Note: Canungra Times will offer all candidates equal editorial space in the lead up to the election.

OBITUARY

Anna Simpson

Anna Simpson was born on 13 October 1959 and died on Christmas Day 2021, surrounded by her family. Anna was diagnosed with cancer four months before her passing, and although she tried everything, the cancer was not able to be stopped. She lived a full and happy life. Anna is survived by her husband, Jim; her children, Danny and his wife, Carlie; Belinda, Meli, Jess and her husband, Bryce; and Kate. She also had seven wonderful grandchildren – Camryn, Brody, Amielle, Blakely, Lincoln, Lexi, and Seb. Anna’s funeral was held at Danny and Carlie’s property in Canungra and was attended by many locals.

Page 14

After the funeral the drinks came out, and she was given the best sendoff possible. Anna was a much loved member of the Canungra community and made significant contributions over the last 25 years. She was always happy to lend a hand, whether it was making sandwiches during the recent bushfires or raising money for equipment for the local ambulance station and much needed funds for CareFlight. Anna loved to help others and support the community. In all the things Anna had done and achieved in her life nothing and no one was more important to her than her family. Anna will be dearly missed by friends, family and the community.

Seller’s Market Strong

By Susie Cunningham

The cattle market is booming as local producers benefit from a good season and plenty of feed. Bartholomew and Co yarded about 450 head of cattle for their first Beaudesert Store Sale of the year on 15 January, with Albert River Wines cows and calves selling well for $4,100. An outstanding lineup of feeder and backgrounder steers met hot competition, and weaner steers and heifers reached new levels. Auctioneer Garth Weatherall said buyers travelled from far and wide to get their hands on quality Beaudesert cattle. “Cows and calves are creating a lot of demand amongst buyers due to the wonderful season we’ve had and an abundance of feed across the southeast corner,” he said. “The commitment of producers in the area buying better bulls and aiming to have better stock is making Beaudesert’s market stronger, with the better quality coming through as we

Roy Bartholomew, Nick Bischoff, Garth Weatherall and Rhys Bodey move forward.” He said demand was strong as the region recovered from the crippling drought which came to a head in 2019. “Due to the high amount of cattle sold through the terrible drought and bushfire times (there were a lot of cattle sold at the end of 2018 and right through 2019) people have been looking to restock,” he said. “We do advise vendors to take the opportunity

to sell some cattle in a wonderful marketplace. When something’s good it’s good. A bird in the hand’s worth two in the bush.” At the 15 January sale, Pam Moriarty sold Heavy Feeder Steers for $2720 and Steve Moriarty sold his for $2710. Boorook Partnership sold Feeder Steers for $2560 and David and Patricia Parr sold theirs for $2460. The Buhle family sold Restocker Steers for

$2500 and Vin and Judy Slingsby sold theirs for $2280. Albert River Wines sold Weaner Steers for $2300, Mt Maroon Grazing sold theirs for $2220 and Keira Farm sold theirs for $2,120. Craig Redgwell sold Replacement Heifers for $2,300, Tony and Chantal Ludwig sold theirs for $2,200 and the Buhle family sold theirs for $2,100. Des Hirn sold Weaner Heifers for $2,040, Mt

Maroon Grazing sold theirs for $2040 and Keira Farm sold theirs for $1,960. Albert River Wines sold Cows and Calves for $4,100, Munster Brothers sold theirs for $4,000 and Paradise Creek Pastoral Co sold theirs for $3750. Cronk Family Trust sold cows for $2,400 and Albert River Wines sold bulls for $3,600. The next Beaudesert Store sale is on Saturday 12 February, sales are held fortnightly.

By Keer Moriarty Global sensation and multiple ARIA Award winning artist Tones And I (Toni Watson) returned to her roots, performing a one-off gig at Beechmont’s Providence Farm Hall, the location of her first video shoot in 2018. Tones played to a lush hillside of friends, residents and families of the Beechmont community as the sun set, creating a truly memorable moment for Scenic Rim locals. “It was so much fun to be back on the mountain and play some music for the community at a venue

that is so special to me,” she said. The Beechmont performance was part of a busking tour up the east coast of Australia, described as a gentle nod to Tones’ early career where she packed her things and drove to Byron Bay to try her hand at busking in 2017. It was there she met her curent Manager Jackson Walkden-Brown (of Artists Only) and began living between her van in Byron and Walkden-Brown’s property in Lower Beechmont. During her time in Beechmont, Tones wrote a slew of successful

songs, including recordbreaking global hit ‘Dance Monkey’. Tegan and Emma McKenzie Carter of Providence Farm said they were pleased to be able to host Tones and bring her music to the mountain. “It was so exciting to have an event of that scale and a performer of Tones’ calibre at our venue.” “We normally only do weddings and small community events so this was really inspiring.” Tones and I has since embarked on an extensive tour of the United States and Europe.

Kuweni’s Big Idea! By Keer Moriarty

Local artist Kuweni Dias Mendis has received a $10,000 Big Idea grant from Scenic Rim Regional Counil. Kuweni’s project called ‘Running Rivers: Pigments of Place’ researches the traditional process of extracting colour pigments from natural sources like the earth, rocks, roots, leaves, bark, berries, lichen and fungi. Scenic Rim Arts Reference Group chair and Division 4 Councillor

Michael Enright said Ms Mendis turned natural colour pigments into inks, watercolours and pastels. Ms Mendis said she was delighted to receive one of the Big Idea grants. “’Running Rivers: Pigments of Place’ is a pivotal career transforming project contributing to and raising my profile as an independent artist creating new work exploring the themes of regeneration of people and place, and instilling a sense of belonging influenced by

my Sri Lankan heritage,” she said. Round 2 of the 20212022 Scenic Rim RADF Program is now open, and closes on 16 February 2022. If you have an idea for a project please contact the RADF Liaison Officer Mark Paddick for assistance with your application on 5540 5111. On Thursday 20th January Beechmont District Landcare Association held their AGM and a new Management Committee was elected. Paul Keefer is now the President and Rob Newman was elected to the role of Secretary. Christine Tod continues as Treasurer. Paul, a Civil Engineer, has owned property in Beechmont for many years but has recently taken up residence in the area. Rob is a long-time resident, active in many aspects of the Beechmont community. He has recently retired from a career in civil construction and landscape development. Christine has been the Treasurer since 2018 and is a large landholder combining cattle breeding and fattening with land restoration. Susan Cully and Toni Telfer step down for a well deserved break from the duties of President and Secretary. Both Su-

san and Toni have been members of Beechmont Landcare for many years and we have been very grateful to have had them take up these roles. In Susan’s time as President the Association has been granted over $110,000 in funds. All funds were applied entirely to environmental work through pro bono work by the Management Committee. The Association has cared for five Council Reserves, planting over 5000 trees. Through her insatiable drive to protect native flora and fauna the Association has engaged in collaborative projects with the Queensland Museum and University of Queensland to study dung beetles and it continues to do ecological surveys of the Back Creek Riparian corridor. Susan has recently been nominated for a Scenic Rim Australia Day Award to acknowledge her service to the community.

Canungra’s History When we lived at “Glen Witheren” in the 1990s we had a feral Guinea fowl arrive, who took to attacking our hens. This hen took refuge on a chair on the front verandah for weeks until we were able to eliminate her tormentor. She had her own chair with a suitable old coat where she spent the night. Very early in the morning she would go down stairs and only come back during the day if she needed to lay. Surprisingly, she did not ‘mess’ on the verandah. Coming in at night became a real ritual - up the front steps and onto the back of the closest verandah chair (mine). Now this chair had a bath mat in the shape of a big green frog as a backrest. She settled on the top of the back cushion when night was closing in. Des would take her to her own chair where she settled for the night. After her tormentor was gone the nightly routine continued for some time, until the day she went into the pen with the others for her afternoon feed and Des quickly shut them in. I have another set of photos showing another white hen that had joined her on the verandah, on the day they both needed to lay at the same time!

Happy New Year Well what a year we have left behind and I hope you are all rested and ready to face the challenges and excitement of 2022. It’s got to be better than 2021 although as I write this column the new COVID-19 variant is spreading rapidly and again our lives are needing to accommodate this. Please be assured that all Council services, facilities and Customer Contact Centres are operating under COVID-19 safe procedures which we are all familiar with so the main message is that we all be patient and kind in our dealings with all businesses in our region.

EmpowHER Hiking Bookings are open for local women and girls to explore our beautiful region at the same time as learning bushwalking skills, meeting like-minded friends and getting active. This program, funded by the

Queensland Government and Health and Wellbeing Queensland, is the first of its kind for the Scenic Rim. Find out more and book tickets on www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/empowHER

Bigger, Better Bookshop Customers have been raving about the new extension to Canungra Books and Art in Kidston Street. “People are thrilled with the new space, the extra room to move about and the comfy seats,” said Jan McGregor, owner of Canungra Books and Art. “It has taken a few months to renovate the new rooms with new paint, newly polished floors, and new lighting.” It’s wonderful to have the extra space, it’s light and airy and just makes the shop feel completely different,” said Jan. The new extension includes a large area for art and coffee-table style books and new bookcases and displays for antiquarian and vintage books, classics, history, Australiana and more. A special quiet nook for cooking, gardening, flora and fauna provides a lovely airy space for pondering the next cooking or gardening project. The original part of the shop is now being re-organised in coming weeks to improve the

roads throughout the region and emergency works are being completed along with assessment of damage to lodge a disaster funding claim. Roads in Sarabah, Illinbah and Flying Fox valleys have sustained serious damage in this area.

Toastmasters for Scenic Rim By Caitlyn Larkin Public speaking is a common fear for many, but Boyland resident Julia Schafer has learned to overcome the panic through Toastmasters. Toastmasters is an international organisation that has clubs where people can improve their communication and public speaking skills, as well as meet others. “Public speaking doesn’t make my heart flutter any more or make me want to run out of the room and throw up,” says Julia. After travelling from her home in Boyland to Nerang for Toastmasters meetings, Julia saw the need for a Scenic Rim chapter of the club. Julia was first drawn to Toastmasters when she responded to a guest speaker position on P&O cruise lines presenting sustainability and urban gardening workshops. “I didn’t want this fear to hold me back, so I put my application in and after I got accepted, I was like, holy crap, I have to figure out how to do this. “I found Nerang Toastmasters and they were just such a supportive

Julia Schafer group of people because they all come from the same place. “We all have the fear in us or some reason that we want to be a better speaker, so they are aware of where you are at.” Toastmasters draws a wide range of participants with all different ages and life experiences and is a club with very active membership. “We are all assigned different roles every week … and all of the skills that we learn are transferrable into everyday business life.” Julia’s decision to become a part of the Toast-

masters Nerang group has changed her life forever. “When my Mum turned 80 a couple of years ago … we had all these family and friends gathered around and I got up and gave an impromptu speech. “It was totally without preparation, and I was really proud of myself because I wasn’t nervous whilst doing it.” Julia will hold a demonstration meeting on 17 March at 7pm at Canungra Hang Gliders Clubhouse 82 Wagonwheel Road, Boyland.

Poor posture can have a negative impact on many aspects of your health. Have you ever noticed an athlete’s posture? Or how about a very positive person’s? Compare that with a lazy or depressed person’s posture! Having a good posture can actually make you feel more positive and have a happier demeanour. It can also make you feel more energetic. Be mindful that slouching or slumping can: • Misalign your musculoskeletal system; • Increase pressure on your spine, making it more prone to injury and degeneration; • Cause neck, shoulder and back pain; • Decrease flexibility of your spine; • Affect how well your joints move; • Affect balance and increase risk of falling; • Make it difficult to di-

gest food; • Make it difficult to breathe; • Lead to low moods or depression; • Perpetuate physical pain. Bad posture can be a contributing factor in low back pain, therefore improved posture and postural control can have a positive effect on pain. Our bodies use learned motor patterns to perform everyday activities. When we sit, stand, walk or move - our body follows previously learned motor patterns. If your body has learned to slouch - that is what it will do. • Physiotherapists are trained to correct and help to improve posture through assessment and treatment techniques and exercise prescription and this can lead to many positive health outcomes for patients.

FOCUS ON LOCAL BUSINESS

Canungra has a New Chiropractor in Town! After many years of encouragement and a little persuasion from locals, Chiropractor Dr Nigel Nulty has opened an office in Canungra. Dr Nigel is a new local, having been in town for almost two years and is settling in for the long haul. His primary practice in Helensvale is over 16 years old and is receiving rave reviews online, so he is looking forward to achieving the same results here in Canungra. After running practices in Melbourne, Country Victoria, Brisbane and Helensvale he brings a world of experience. Nigel provides a range of services including Chiropractic (infants to elderly), Functional/Nutritional/Naturopathic medicine, Body Scanning technology and Applied Kinesiology.

He has a wealth of knowledge in how to maximise the way the body naturally heals disease, illness and reduces pain. “The body is a self-healing mechanism,” says Dr Nigel. “Modern day lifestyles cause enormous physical, nutritional and emotional stress on our body.” “Most ignore it when it’s only minor and only act once the ‘crisis’ or flare up occurs after years of the ‘it won’t happen to me’ scenario.” Unfortunately the cause of a flare up is often not a sudden occurrence. Most flare ups are a gradual build up of stressors (and thus a lack of healing) which results in the body finally letting you know it’s not happy - ending in pain, disease and illness. “The trap is that it

creeps up on you, many younger people under 40 years old have arthritis and don’t even know!” “Our goal is to teach you how to look after yourself better now, for the future. “Ignoring minor problems may seem like no big deal, but often result in significant flare ups and big disruptions to everyday life.” “Bad posture may indicate an unhealthy spine. “Fatigue, digestive and sleep problems may indicate diet deficiencies or toxicities.” “So we recommend to have your spine x-rayed your general health checked over to know for sure if you are in a good place or not.” “Test don’t guess!” is Dr Nigel’s motto. Chiro One Canungra is now located at 32 Christie Street, Canungra, just

NATURE’S GEMS Australian Bustard Ardeotis australis

By Melissa Whitby I have just recently come back from a trip up in Far North Queensland looking at finches. It always amazes me along the way, the other bird species that I see when I am out looking for a particular bird. On this particular trip, I could not get over how many Australian Bustards I observed. Some who are reading this article might ask, what is an Australian Bustard? Chances are if you have travelled throughout the rural areas of Queensland, you would have definitely seen one. The Australian Bustard is instantly set apart due to its size and mannerisms. They are a large bird about the size of a domestic turkey with a black head cape, black breast band and brown back. Usually, they are seen walking slowly along in favoured habitats close to roads. Male birds are larger than females. Another name for the Australian Bustard is the

Plains Turkey. I have to say that I tend to lean towards calling them a Plains Turkey. The range of this large bird extends throughout Australia other than Tasmania. Australian Bustards can be seen in a variety of natural and man-made habitats. These include agricultural land including crops, spinifex, native grasslands and open scrublands. In all the years I have been looking at these impressive birds, I have never heard them. When these birds are breeding, the male has an elaborate display which is similar to other bustard species that I have observed overseas in countries such as South Africa. Usually, I see these birds singly or in loose companies. Food supply is a driving factor of where these birds will be seen, and their food consists of large insects such as crickets and grasshop-

pers. Small mammals may also be on the menu if the birds encounter them. These birds are most active in the morning and late afternoon. Australian Bustards have reduced in numbers in some areas of their natural range, however, in my travels throughout Queensland since 2020, I have regularly observed the birds. They are easily seen whilst driving and are relatively tolerant if one does not get out of the vehicle to observe. On my recent trip, I observed one bird in the same location over several days who was very tolerant of people and it was obvious that it was not harassed. For anyone wanting to see this bird, I would suggest keeping your eyes open around places like Townsville. Closer to the SouthEast Queensland, I have seen the birds around Chinchilla. Overall, Australian Bustards are not a hard bird to see, you just have to be looking for them in the right habitat!

PET OF THE MONTH Affectionate and Loving

Maureen is a gentle, loving and affectionate young lady looking for a new family to join. She came to AWLQ as a stray so her history is a bit of a mystery, but from her personality, staff have learned that life as a stray is definitely not her thing! All she wants is a safe and cozy home where she can nap all day

long and then lay on the couch and cuddle her humans at night when they get home from work. If you are looking for the same kind of relationship then she is definitely the right cat for you. Maureen is approximately three years old. Her adoption fee is $180.

GROW YOUR OWN with

Bill O’Sullivan

TULLAMORE FARM One of the staple vegetables for most of us has always been the humble potato. Once you have managed to understand their requirements, they are not difficult to grow, they grow well in this region and store well. The real key is starting with good seed potatoes. Start with well sprouted seed potatoes and you are off to a great start. For us the ideal time to begin planting out potatoes is early March. With that in mind, now is the time to be acquiring your good seed potatoes. We grow our potatoes two ways. In our vegetable gardens and also in 20 litre food grade containers. Many people use potato bags,

cardboard boxes and many other techniques. Our first plantings will be in early March and we will then plant out about every three weeks to get a staggered crop. Last year we planted out until late August. We choose to stagger the plantings because this minimises the need to store larger quantities. When planting our potatoes we start with an initial covering of about 10 centimetres of soil or compost. In the gardens we space them about 20 to 25 centimetres apart and in the containers we start with two or three dependent on the size. As the green shoots emerge and reach for the sunlight they become a nice leafy plant. As they grow taller you add

Potato beds at Tullamore Farm. more soil and compost. This process is called mounding, and it is the area between the original seed potato and the top of the soil added where all the potatoes will form. We typically mound up about 20 to 30 centimetres of soil and compost in two or three additions which ensures plenty of growing room for the young potato crop.

Potatoes require about 100 days from planting to harvest. Flowering or the plants dying back are a guide to when they are ready to harvest. Don’t worry if you harvest too early you just receive a smaller crop. You will get the hang of it. When storing potatoes, leave the dirt on and keep in a dark place.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough

Christmas at St Luke’s was celebrated with a special service on Christmas Day and a very successful Carols by Candlelight (actually torchlight) held in the week before. A large number of people especially enjoyed listening to the wonderful tenor voice of Stewart Morris. We must thank the Canungra Bendigo Bank for their assistance with the costs of the night. As the New Year arrived members of the congregation gathered for a meal to welcome in 2022 and to be thankful for all we have. We continue to appreciate the work done by Fr. Peter Moore as we await the arrival of our new permanent priest, who is coming from England. We all need to show patience and have faith to know this will soon happen. Has life returned to normal following the special times associated with Christmas? As I go about my normal life one thing I appreciate in the early morning is walking in solitude and among the beauty of God’s creation. It just makes me realize how much we take for granted. It would be wonderful if we all stopped, looked and listened to what surrounds us. Nature. These thoughts led me to think how important it is to draw our attention to St Luke’s. Do you hear the bell on Sunday morning? Do you wonder why it is rung? Bells have been rung by Christian churches since 400AD. However, St. Luke’s bell is rung each Sunday morning, fifteen minutes before the service begins and again when the service is about to commence. Next time you hear the bell be encouraged to see this as a time to celebrate life and be thankful for what we have. St Luke’s Car Boot Sale will again be held in 2022. Why not come along on Saturday March 12th and enjoy what will be on offer. You will be most welcome. Little Lukies will commence again, on Monday afternoons, once students return to the classroom.

SPORT A Morning Flight

By Caitlyn Larkin When I first started my internship at the Canungra Times, I never thought it would end up with me tandem Paragliding above the Scenic Rim at 5.30am. For most Canungra residents, sunrise is a time of deep sleep, but Phil Hystek and a committed group of friends would rather soar above the valley in paragliders. “Most pilots want to stay in the air for an extended length of time, whereas we are just doing it for the exercise, particularly the walk up.” “This allows people who live in Brisbane or the Gold Coast to still get back before work starts.” On the morning of my tandem flight, I met Phil and a group of four others at the base of John Hinchcliffe’s hill in Illinbah valley at 4am to start the 40-minute ascent to the launch spot. We powered up the hill, slippery with dew from the cool night, and

Phil Hystek preparing to fly from ‘Hinchliffe’s Hill’. Photo: Supplied. arrived at the launch site at around 5am puffing and excited for the flight ahead. One by one, the others in our group set up their Paragliders and launched themselves off the hill, floating through the air to their landing sites. Phil and I were the last ones to take off, not only

because we had the biggest paraglider canopy but also because Phil was coaching a young woman on her fifth flight. “I teach, I fly cross country, I do a lot of this sort of thing because I really just love it.” When we finally launched the tandem into the sky, the view from the

harness was incredible. “It’s the most beautiful thing to do in the morning, there’s no one around and you get the sunrise to yourself.” Phil could not have been more right, the flight was like nothing I have ever experienced before. Illinbah valley

stretched out beneath us as we silently (apart from a few squeals of excitement from me) glided the six minutes down to the field below. However for Phil, who has been a member of the Canungra Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club since 1992, this was just a normal morning.

From the Park By Bren Dalby

Our last two nominations for 2021 Sportsperson of the Year are Jimmy Tomlinson and Col Lee. Jimmy is one of the most talented soccer players ever to grace Moriarty Park field and a much respected asset to the Canungra Owls Mens Team and our club. In 2021 Jimmy took out Canungra Owls Player of the Year; Canungra Owls Mens Golden Boot; Canungra Owls Mens Coaches Choice and Football Gold Coast Mens Metro Golden Boot having scored an astonishingly high number of goals for the season. We have watched Jimmy come through the ranks at Canungra and it has been a pleasure to watch him mature into a tremendous player, showing all the attributes we encourage and nurture as a club, as well as a lovely young man; an absolute credit to his family. He is a great ambassador for the game and looked up to by the younger players wishing to aspire to his level. Top job Jimmy!

Sportsperson Awards Talking of Foodies - our Foodworks Sportsperson of the Year awards night will be coming up. A date will be decided soon and advertised by usual means and all nominees advised.

Paint and Sip Jimmy Tomlinson. Canungra Bowls Club have nominated Col Lee as a Sportsperson of the month, joining the club as an older member but throwing himself into the game whole heartedly and successfully. In 2021 Col achieved the Most Improved Player of the Year. We have a lot of things in the pipeline for the year but are a little apprehensive still with the COVID situation. A food trucks event has been suggested, in the next couple of months hopefully and we are discussing having a circus around October after soccer season finishes, so

look out for those. Our new notice board will be up by the time we go to print on the wall at Moriarty Park, provided to us by Bendigo Bank; thank you very much to them; it will be super to at last have all the great classes and events we hold there advertised for all to see.

Trivia A trivia night is planned for Friday 11 February. Cost is $5 per person, maximum six at a table. These nights are sponsored by the ever generous and amazing Foodworks.

Always appreciative of all they do for us. Book with Bren on 0414435919 / bren.dalby@bigpond.com.

Kate Kinsela has held a couple of Paint and Sip nights at Moriarty Park, one of which I was lucky enough to attend. This was a great value night of fun and painting and I can’t recommend it enough. Kate is planning to hold these regularly so again please look out for the next one!

Facilities A new shed , perimeter fencing and, grant permitting, female change rooms are on the cards for us and then we can really get serious about the skate park. We are sorry it is taking a long time but we are hopeful we can get cracking soon. We are a small committee who work hard to try to get stuff done but there is a lot of ‘stuff’! Please bear with us and be ready to help when we hold a fundraiser for this massive project; we always have more chance of achieving grant funding if we are seen to be actively fundraising for the cause and that the community is backing it. Our meetings are the third Monday of the month at 6.45pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and will be most welcome.

The Littlest Bowler Seven year old Steven Bird-Monk.

By Keer Moriarty Bowlers came from across the Gold Coast and Scenic Rim for Canungra Bowls Club’s Aquis Farm’s Seafood Day. The competition was fierce, but not too fierce for seven year old Steven BirdMonk. The keen young bowler played lead

for the Burleigh Heads Club on the day, impressing everyone around him with his ability on the green. Steven’s mum, Ali Bird, said he has been ‘rolling up’ since he could walk. With both parents keen bowlers, this has been a great family pastime. Steven played with his father at Canungra on Aquis Farm’s Seafood day. He

used the day as a warm up event for the Junior Championships which were played on 20 January at Toowoomba Bowls Club. Canungra Bowls Club said they were grateful to Aquis Farm for their generous sponsorship of the day and thanked Aquis Farm representative, Steve Geiger for presenting the winning teams with their prizes.
