Outdoor Entertainment in Cambridge June – September 2014


Midsummer Fair Organised by Cambridge City Council, Summer in the City is a range of fun activities taking place from June to September in the city. There is so much to look forward to this summer in Cambridge and excitement is mounting as the city prepares for an historic sporting event when Stage 3 of the greatest cycling race on the planet, the Tour de France, sets off from Parker’s Piece on Monday 7 July – the final day of Cambridge’s Big Weekend. The Big Weekend, this year sponsored by Anglia Ruskin University, is one of several special summer events, which also includes Midsummer Fair, one of the country’s oldest and biggest travelling fun fairs and also Jazz and Brass In the Parks, eight Sunday concerts throughout the summer weeks taking place in leafy Cambridge parks. Wednesday 18 – Monday 23 June Midsummer Common This historic fair has been visiting the city’s Midsummer Common for over 800 years making it one of the county’s oldest travelling fun fairs. Expect all the attractions associated with a traditional fun fair along with the very best white-knuckle rides. Look out for money-saving vouchers in the Cambridge News! Parker’s Piece – 4, 5, 6, & 7 July Friday 4 July Music and Fireworks Parker’s • Piece 6pm – 10.15pm Anglia Ruskin University, one of the largest universities in East of England is teaming up with Cambridge City Council to put together four days of free entertainment at the Anglia Ruskin University Big Weekend. It kicks off on Friday night with an evening of live music on the main stage, followed by a spectacular fireworks display to put everyone in the mood for a jam-packed weekend.

Bay City Rollers Starring Les McKeown Bay City Rollers were the One Direction of the 70s. Featuring lead vocalist Les McKeown, the band will perform all their greatest hits.

Billy Ocean Headlining the evening is one of the most successful soul and pop legends whose hits include Love Really Hurts Without You, When The Going Gets Tough and Get Into My Car.

The Big Weekend Fireworks – sponsored by ARM At 10pm enjoy a spectacular summer fireworks display.

The Alliance Française Marquee will feature popular French songs by Huguette, accordians by Bert Santilly and Dawn Loombe, a jazz concert by the International Jazz Septet, popular French songs and jazz by The Grumpies and ‘The Big Weekend Challenge’, a community virtual bike race.

Main Stage 12pm – 10pm – Comperes: Kev and Ros from Heart Breakfast A variety of musical talents will perform on the main stage, including: young local talent from around Cambridge; choirs from the Cycle of Songs art project; ska from Big 10; Chicago blues from Split Whiskers, dub reggae from Dreadzone; A mix of funk, hip-hop, jazz and brass from Renegade Brass Band and The Aces formerly of Desmond Decker featuring Delroy Williams and Winston Francis.

Make and Create Tent – Sat only 12pm – 5pm – Supported by University of Cambridge Musuems Join Cambridge Museums and enjoy some hands-on creative fun. Get a taste of what’s in store for the summer holidays and be one of the first to pick up their jam packed Summer at the Museums events programme.

The Vindis Cycle Village – Sat, Sun & Mon 12pm – 5pm Sponsored by Vindis The Vindis Cycle Village will celebrate the arrival of the Tour de France with a variety of cycling activities for the public to come and try.

Outdoor Film Screening – Supported by Cambridge Film Trust – Sat only from 7.30pm

An outdoor screen will show live coverage of stages 1 & 2 the Grand Départ from Yorkshire.

The Fun Lab offers interactive science activities for all ages to enjoy. There may even be an appearance by some weird and wacky wildlife!

Changing Spaces Pop Up Art Gallery – Sat & Sun – Supported by Bidwells Pop up art gallery created by Changing Spaces, the city wide pop up exhibition project.

The Grosvenor Sports Zone will host a variety of local sport clubs and organisations that will showcase their sports through workshops, demonstrations and taster sessions.

Showing cycling themed films plus commissioned work by local film maker Rydian Cook.

Screening of the Tour de France – Sat & Sun from 11am onwards

Other activities throughout the day include: French Market, Face painting, Storytelling, Fairground rides*, a bar, food from around the world, and much much more. * There is a charge for fair rides. Artists subject to contract.

Sunday 6 July International Day & Cambridge Mela • Parker’s Piece 11am – 5pm Sunday brings an international flavour to the weekend’s music and events – a celebration of Asian culture with the Cambridge Mela and world music on the main stage including Latin, Salsa band Son Yambu and Zong Zing All Stars playing irresistible Congolese dance music.

One of the city’s most popular summer events, the Cambridge Mela, a celebration of Asian culture, is now in its fifth year and one of the most up and coming in the country.

Dance and World Music Marquees

With their own great atmosphere, the Dance and World marquees will feature DJs, bands and dance from around the world. Also on Sunday: French Market, Pop Up Art Gallery, Alliance Française Marquee, Grosvenor Sports Zone, The Vindis Cycling Village, live coverage of the Tour de France on an outdoor screen, Fairground rides, a bar and much much more. Monday 7 July Tour de France Stage 3 Finally, with the arrival of the Tour de France on Monday 7 July, Parker’s Piece will be transformed into a cycling village with a range of activities to enjoy. The Tour de France teams and infrastructure will be there ready for the Stage 3 start. As part of the celebrations there will be outdoor screenings showing the race through Cambridge’s historic streets, a soft drinks bar and food stalls. The drama, excitement and spectacle of the Tour de France is coming to Cambridge and the county on Monday 7 July, as the third stage of this year’s tour begins in the city. For details see overleaf.

PARTNERS About Stage 3 of the Tour de France With7KH YHUVLRQV LOOXVWUDWHG VKRZ WKH a global TV audience of 3.5 billion, the Tour de France is the world’s largest annual sporting event. Stages 1 and 2 of this year’s event will take DSSURYHG 7RXU GH )UDQFH DQG 6WDJH place in Yorkshire, before Stage 3 begins by Parker’s Piece (Cambridge). ORFDO DXWKRULW\ ORJRV The Peloton will then ride through the historic city centre via Regent Street and Sidney Street before turning left at the Round Church. The riders will then travel past the world famous colleges of St John’s, Trinity and King’s as they cycle along King’s Parade and Trumpington Street before leaving the city via the A1134. The Peloton will then race through to Saffron Walden via the A1301 taking in the beautiful villages in the south of the county including Great Shelford, Hinxton and Ickleton. After the Tour leaves Cambridgeshire, it travels through Essex towards London to finish on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

Watching You can watch the race from anywhere along the route and we anticipate Cambridge city centre will be very busy very early. If you intend to travel into the city on race day, we encourage you to plan ahead and to think about what time you will travel and whether you will use public transport, cycle or walk. With the atmosphere building from 8.30am on Parker’s Piece, the activity begins with a carnival procession through the city which leaves Gonville Place at approximately 10.15am followed by the race itself which starts at 12.15pm. RIDER SPOKE Combining technology and cycling to create a unique immersive art experience.

Thursday 3 – Sunday 6 July Various times from 7pm starting at Cambridge Junction Cycle of Songs is an Arts Council England funded project commissioned by Cambridge City Council, devised by the award winning Pilot Theatre and Historyworks to mark the Tour de France visit to Cambridge on 7 July 2014. This project will showcase and celebrate the talent and diversity of Cambridge and will include local people of all ages sharing their voice and celebrating the city in song. Nine pieces have been commissioned from a wide range of composers and poets, inspired by historical research and based on words from original sources of fascinating and quirky stories at iconic locations along the Tour’s route in Cambridge.
