My name is Hector Luna. I am the producer and publisher of several publications that make up C47Houston News & Entertainment Magazine. I started this magazine with our first issue in January of 2008. On the cover was a Western/Cowboy trainer to the Hollywood stars that, at the time, lived in the City of Houston, Mr. Joe Bowman.

Since then, C47Houston has interviewed a lot of local filmmakers and filmmakers from across the state that are and continue to make movies, are producing, and, more importantly, are investing their funds to making more movies here in the Houston area and across the State of TEXAS. WE started out on the ground level and with a small hardcopy magazine, but technology, the use of technology and the economy has forced us to move toward a digital magazine. It was a move that cost us a lot of subscribers and a lot of money. But, a strategy that is showing some promise in this so-called world of pixels and bytes.

Currently, we produce a WEEKLY eMagazine that compliments the premiere magazine and we send out Quick eNews that fills in all the gaps during the production of the bi-monthly magazine. We also have a social presence with a Blog, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn and an Instagram accounts. Get involved and check them out.

Texas Director and Writer Damien Dante, SGL Entertainment and Outlaw Movie Studios have started production on part 3 of their “Jezebeth” western movie franchise “Jezebeth 3: The Guns of El Diablo”.

Written by Mr. Dante the story follows a young woman by the name of Jezebeth Wyck who was, at one time, in possession of a nineteenth century diary that details the summoning of a demon. After breaking a satanic code Jezebeth is endowed with evil powers. She gathers a group of like-minded evil and forms The El Diablo Gang and creates horrors across Texas. When good verses evil battle, The El Diablo Gang are all captured and hanged in Serenity, Texas, sending them back to Hell, from whence they came. After 140 years in Hell, the Devil finally pardons Jezebeth and The El Diablo Gang. The year is 2016. The outlaws return to Serenity, but find a ghost town. Not dissuaded the gang continue where they left off, claim the town as their own and create carnage and evil.

Produced by Mr. Dante, Jeffrey A. Swanson and Todd Rodgers casting includes Kylee Jones, Tina D. Rubin, Erin Craziano, Dawna Lee Heising, Ania Tamowska, Frank Warpeha, Ruby Gonzalez, Chris Schaar, Abigail Van Blarcom and Ana Santos as Jezebeth Wyck.

The movie is being shot in the Spring, Texas area (Greater Houston Metroplex area). The film will be cut and spliced by Todd Rodgers.

Executive Producers include Mr. Dante, Jeffrey Swanson, Todd Rodgers, Massimilliano Cerchi, Dawna Helsing and Chris Schaar.

The team is looking at a worldwide release in 2016.

The two other films “Jezebeth” and “Jezebeth 2: Hour of the Gun” are Written and Directed by Damien Dante. “Jezebeth 2” is having its WORLD PREMIERE coming up October 30th at this years RIP Horror Film Festival in Hollywood California. The team is in the preproduction phase of “Jezebeth 4: Resurrection”.

Dealing with Bad Publicity or PR Nightmares Managing the News Cycle when Mistakes are discovered or the Facts Misrepresented By: Andy Valadez, Marketing Strategist of Marketing Dynamics

In our continuing series and in this issue, we talk about what you can do to repair the damage from bad publicity, comments or misrepresentations made unintentionally or intentionally in the public arena and picked up by the media or social media.

It has been said “There is no such thing as bad publicity.” However, no one wants to make the front page as a feature in the headlines in a negative light or have millions of negative comments on any online news outlet, website, blog or social media site. This kind of “bad publicity” can be devastating to your career, to your livelihood and to your bank account.

In this age of technology, it is almost impossible to be “invisible”.

You are being tracked, cameras are mounted in every public nook and cranny, people can capture video on their phones and, if you are a public figure or well-known, your every action, your every word is being recorded and may be used against you.

Lately, there have been a few national headlines like Planned Parenthood expose, Ashley Madison (cheaters revealed), Trump and McCain (supposed veteran insult), Benghazi, iPhone Watch, border politics, police “abuse”, and many more.

Bad news is bad news and there is no easy way around it. It is best to have an operational plan in place before there is too much damage. And, it is best, to know a few things that can help minimize the damage. Have a strategy available to prepare your team.

Often times, the media may misinterpret the facts incorrectly and you will find that it is much easier to control the damage and much easier to deal with the repairs before the story goes out to the public.

However, NOT having an understanding of managing communications that are offline or internal (some of the principles listed here may apply) may impose different problems.

Ways to Handle Bad Press: Prepare a statement and get it out to the media correcting wrong information, details of your position, provide an appeal to give your team time to respond, etc.

Have one person or team to be responsible to answer internal communications and with the media.

Be aware of the legal and political environment when answering (you don’t want to create another problem with your response to the coverage).

Tell the truth, it will come out later and it is best to clear the air and answer honestly.

Make it right and resolve the issue or share a general plan with how you will do so.

Share the good news too.

Consider the source; there may be no need to respond.

Return your calls from the media and don’t say “No comment” (that creates more scrutiny from readers and viewers).

If you messed up, admit it (unless you have been advised by your legal team to maintain silence to build a proper defense).

Have an active media model in place so that you have a good relationship with the press.

Read the resulting coverage and determine if there is a need to clarify or update the press with further information..

Houston Writer and Director Mel House and his production company Upstart Filmworks continue to raise productions funds using a crowdfunding campaign for their new feature movie “30 to 45”.

Their last crowdfunding campaign via IndieGoGo closed at the end of June, a couple of months back (started June 1st) and garnered just a little over three thousand dollars and met 8% of their 40K goal. This is on top of the funds secured by their Pizza Party/Fundraiser at the Star Pizza Espresso Room Monday, June 22nd.

Currently, the team moves their fundraising campaign to KickStarter. com in order to garner fundd for this movie. Unlike IndieGoGo, KickStarter is an all-or-nothing campaign. If you don’t make the stated goal, within the allotted time on KickStarter, the filmmaking team will NOT get any funds.

With less than a week left for their Kickstarter campaign, as of the release of this issue, the team has raised a little over 2K of a lofty goal of $20K (Funding deadline: August 12th, 2015) Written by Mr. House, the story follows Eric a multiracial genre filmmaker with several projects, three day-jobs and a ton of baggage to deal with. Described as a confessional, cautionary tale, motivational speech, acts of catharsis and comedic experiment all rolled into one. It is joking pitched as “A Nightmare on Elm Street” meets “Hollywood Shuffle”.

Casting includes Omar Adam, Debbie Rochon, Tye Blue, Lisa Wilcox, Richard Riehle, Angelo Moore, Chelsea Ryan McCurdy, Jill Brumer and Steve Scott just to name a few names. They have also secured Actor Tony Todd who will lend his voice (VO) to play the part of Walter, the Doll, as well as actor Miko Hughes.

“The movie Business really sucks...why do I stay in this abusive relationship?”

Texas Director Wyatt Cagle, Producers Gordon Williams and Kenneth Dupuis, CGL Studios and G Sharp Productions are in the production phase and soon to be in post of their new Historical Fiction short movie, “The Example”.

The fourth collaboration with G Sharp Productions and CGL Studios and written by Gordon Williams, the story takes the audience back to the events leading up to, including and aftermath of the 1943 Beaumont Race Riot. Based on true events, the story follows Officer Miller Harvey, a white Beaumont, Texas Police Officer who is determined to protect and serve his city and his family. The story also follows Carver Jefferson, a Black Beaumont, Texas business owner who is determined to protect his family by leaving the city as racial hostility divide black and white when a Juneteenth event and a KKK Rally take place at the same time and in the same area. After curfew and while Beaumont is under martial law, Harvey and another white officer and Jefferson’s world will converge at a road block. Tensions explode on that hot summer’s night, forcing all of them to make decisions that will question their morals, loyalty and manhood.

Casting includes Kedrick Brown as business owner Carver Jefferson, Jeremy Allen as Officer Miller Harvey, Marc Isaacs as Officer Bernard, Emma Van Lare as Gladys Jefferson, Evan Horsley as Jack Jefferson, Kate Robards as Helen Harvey, and Daniel Stallings as MJ Harvey.

Director of Photography is Donald Kilgore and Assisting in the Directing is Jeremy James Hawa. Laying music tracks is composer Joel Love and doing make up is MUA Cheryl Fitzpatrick.

“The Example” touches on fears, issues and themes that echo those of today in an era that is deemed a post-racial America.

The movie is partially funded by a successful IndieGoGo.com crowdfunding campaign with an astonishing 10K raised out of a 15k goal.

After successfully presenting the cast and crew screening of his directorial feature, “Organizatziya”, Mr. Clay Ayers and Magic Smoke Media are in production of their second feature endeavor “Illusions of Cyn” (originally titled Original Cyn).

Written by Robert Hazel this award-winning script is slated as a romantic drama. “Illusions of Cyn” follows a young woman by the name of Cyn who has a fecund imagination, a vibrant love life and a missing husband by the name of Nick.

In an interwoven story of intrigue, the movie has several parts and is told through a series of flashbacks and fantasies. In the real life, Cyn has to deal with her husband’s loss by completing and re-living the fantasy worlds that she and Nick created together. In a separate reality, Cyn works at Ace Entertainment with her friends and husband creating content for an online role-playing scenarios. And, even deeper, Cyn lives in one of these online role-playing scenarios where Cyn hires Nick, a hardboiled, 1950’s film noir style detective. After tracking a few leads things are not as they seem to be. As each of these stories play out, the main character works through her grief and demonstrating that love triumphs over death.

Casting includes June Griffin Garcia as Cyn, Matthew Carter as Nick, Bobby Haworth as Brian and Jeff Takacs as David.

Behind the camera is cinematographer Trae Stanley, who did a remarkable job behind the camera on “Organizatziya”. Trae is a graduate of the University of Texas Film School and in charge of the Video Production Department at Lakewood Church.

“The three separate storylines in this movie present a real challenge,” comment Director Clay Ayers. “I hope I will be learn (with the help of the team) how to deal with this challenge. We will have to modify the set design, costuming, lighting, cinematography and other parameters so that the viewer can distinguished between the what is real and what is fantasy.”

Production and shooting is scheduled for August 20th and the team hopes to wrap production by the end of September of this year. The team is looking at a late 2016 release.

We are thrilled to be able to sit and talk with Mr. Nick Nicholson. It’s been a long time. We frist met him as the founder and President of the Houston Film Critics Society several years ago. Since then Mr. Nicholson has established himself as a “working” actor, producer, investor as well as continuing to write movie reviews on top of broadcating his opinions on the Radio. A man that takes his job seriously and is moving Houston toward OUR goal of establishing a viable movie industry in this part of the country, Mr. Nicholson not only gives us quite an in-depth interview but also provides “comments” from some of his peers, whether favorable or not, to our inquiries. You will see them as our “Peer Review” as you read the interview.

Mr. Nicholson is surrounded by controversy, as he is a film critic, not everyone will agree with his assesment, still others may dislike him as a person, but there is no doubt, in our mind, that Mr. Nicholson is instrumental, in many ways, in supporting filmmakers (financially and in-kind) who possess commercially sustainable scripts. C47Houston: Thank you Nick for answering a few questions for our readers and followers. There has been a lot of talk about how you can go from being the founder and former President of the Houston Film Critics Society, being a nationally syndicated film critic with memberships in AMPAS as well as the BFCA and BTJA, to taking parts in movies, helping to fund a lot of the independent projects, and, all at the same time, appearing to be fair when it comes to the publicity and supporting projects that you have a part in making, how do you respond to that?

Mr. Nicholson: I believe that kind of talk comes from a lack of knowledge about who I am as well as my experience and status as a nationally recognized film critic. I’m not somebody who simply lives in Houston and writes about films because I am simply a “fan”. There is a difference between being a film critic and a person who writes film reviews.

C47Houston: Is there some training involved to differentiate the both?

Mr. Nicholson: Certainly, I’ve studied film criticism academically and have been trained to review films without bias and can justify my reviews and national memberships. I also have years of experience as a film consultant and have been hired by major studios, directors and producers to provide feedback on projects as scripts and rough edits before they were completed as well as finished products. I’ve advised some of the top people in the film industry who consistently call on me for my expertise. If I had a bias or didn’t know what I was talking about, they wouldn’t be asking specifically for my input and advice.

C47Houston: So, where does this animosity stem from as it relates to the local scene?

Mr. Nicholson: Animosity? I would say that the “negativity” from folks saying that I “can’t remain unbiased” simply can’t handle the fact they made a poor film. I don’t have that problem. I can be supportive of a film I’ve been involved with and still criticize it honestly as a film critic. I understand that some individuals just can’t fathom the reality that I am honest in my reviews because they themselves cannot remain impartial in their own assessments of the films they watch because their friends are in it or they worked on the project themselves. Call it shortsightedness or whatever, but they in turn have the same limitations they place on me and I would be justified in saying that they are biased.

C47Houston: Being hired as a film consultant and by major studios, directors and producers means something does it not?

Mr. Nicholson: It does. Essentially, the professional filmmakers in Hollywood who actually “define the bar for what filmmaking is” don’t see me as having limitations regarding biases or a lack of knowledge, so people in Houston should definitely not have those concerns either. I take my job as a film critic very seriously. I’ve given bad reviews to some of the films I’ve been involved in as an actor and/or a producer. I can remain unbiased because I’m trained to be unbiased.

C47Houston: So, it’s like not being able to see the forest for the trees.

Mr. Nicholson: The major difference being that when I review a project I look at the intregal parts of the film; story, plot, structure, acting, sound, production value, etc. and render my score based on the totality. As a film critic I will compose an honest review and as a film professional, I will always support the indie fim community.

Peer Review: Shawn Welling (director/producer/DP/actor): That depends on what the film critic is basically supposed to be doing. As a critic, if Nick’s review states that a film is good or bad based on certain criteria like the grain of the film, the dialect of the film, what the film is about, the art function of the film and what inspires the filmmaker, then yes, he is a great critic. I don’t remember reading any review of a film he slaughtered. If he was just to review a film and said it’s a bad or good film and not give reasons as to why, then it’s hard to take that review seriously. He’s outspoken and is extremely qualified to touch on the strengths and weaknesses of any film.

Troy Parker (actor): Personally, I do think that there’s a conflict of interest with him being a film critic, but, he does support a lot of films and I feel that he can be fair and honest.

Debra Gutjahr Hale (producer): Nick can remain objective. Having good films coming out of Houston helps him as well by being in them and producing them.

He doesn’t hold back, he’s devoted to making a good film.

Robert Jauregui (writer/director/producer): That’s a difficult balancing act for anyone, not just Nick. It’s hard to maintain that professional quality because you’re a part of the film or project, and the people you worked with you now have relationships with. But at the same time he has to maintain his integrity as a critic. Nick is outspoken and honest. Sometimes too honest. But as a professional critic he has to be, and is, unbiased.

Jemma Evans (actress): I believe that Nick can give an unbiased review because he’s able to step back and see the film as a whole. He is a professional film critic. That is what a professional does.

Josh Starnes (writer/director/film critic): I have not read many of his reviews.

But, I would certainly hope so. I think he shouldn’t be reviewing the films if he has something to do with them, or at the very least review them under a pseudonym.

Matt Carter (actor/producer): I believe he’s fair but I’ve only heard him on the radio and he seems fair. I haven’t read any of his written reviews.

Jenimay Walker (actress): I believe Nick can be objective and he can separate his personal involvement. He does it for us in Hollywood, then he damn sure can do it for Houston.

Wayne Slaten (writer/director/producer): Ironically, I wrote film critic reviews years ago and you have to remain unbiased in a number of ways. Nick can and has been very critical, but he can give a fair assessment and have given a fair

assessment and have given a fair assessment of films he’s been in. He can be fair.

Ronn Head (director/producer): I haven’t seen or read anything he’s been off base on. He carries more weight in Houston than anyone else. He’s a legit film critic. I never saw anything where he’s crossed the line, so I can’t speak to that.

C47Houston: With regard to acting and producing, which do you consider to be the most problematic?

Mr. Nicholson: I consider both to be problematic in their own way but I definitely believe producing comes with the most challenges.

C47Houston: How so?

Mr. Nicholson: Well, anyone involved in the Independent film community in Houston knows how difficult it is to make a film – and finding the money to make that film is the biggest challenge. As a producer, you wear many hats. Too many to list here in this interview.

C47Houston: And as an actor?

Mr. Nicholson: As an actor, you prepare for the role and work with the director to create the character. Actors wear that one single hat while bringing the role to life. I enjoy both immensely, but I believe that both are similar and yet different in the problems.

at anything, always reached his goal and came thru for us. I do think he’s a good actor.

Vickie Weise (director): I haven’t worked a lot with him as a producer but as an actor, I’ve directed him between 4-6 times. I would describe him as a good actor, with a lot of potential. I believe he hasn’t scratched the surface. Nick takes direction very well, with one or two suggestions he’s got what you want. I call him a “director’s actor.” I never had him audition. I would call him in for a part I felt he was right for. He’s a very strong dramatic actor and can do that in his sleep, although I would like to see him do more comedy.

Robert Jauregui: I wrote a specific part just for him. He was fine as my executive producer, easy to work with, he had his opinions but he trusted me with my decisions and later agreed it was the better decision. I would work with him again. He wasn’t hard to work with at all.

Josh Starnes: Right now, I don’t know if he’ll have a part in the film we’re currently in development on. No role has been promised to him. I will tell him to audition. Too early in develepmoent to say if he will deliver in the long run as an executive producer.

Chuck Walker (director/producer): I’ve worked with him once as an actor on my movie called “Bordercross.” He played a news commentator.

He auditioned and did very well. It was a video audition.

Matt Carter: I’ve worked with Nick on four projects both as producer and actor. In one, he got the part because he was the EP and placed himself in the film. Some people believe Nick can be a bully. He’s ambitious and wants to get in front of the camera. He tried to get me to write a part for him in a project I was writing, but I wouldn’t call it being a bully. He does deliver on his promises.

There are no instance where he hasn’t delivered.

Jenimay Walker: Worked on three projects together. On two of them, he was the EP. I worked with him on one as an actor. I believe he is always willing to go through the same audition process as any other actor for the right part. He auditions a great deal and not just in Houston.

Peer Review: Shawn Welling: I met Nick when he reviewed one of my films and I wanted to video the review. I told him that he had an incredible voice that he should be acting. So I’ve worked with him mostly as an actor. Nick really hasn’t been attached as EP because my films are mostly self financed. We’ve worked on a feature (The Legend of Darkhorse County) and couple of my AXI shorts and we have 2 more coming up. He’s also done some voice-over work for me. Working with him as an actor comes down to attitude and availability. He’s a good, solid actor and he works very hard.

Troy Paker: I’ve worked with Nick on 8 films or more as an actor. Might even be higher. I can’t really speak to whether he was also attached as producer.

Jemma Evans: I worked with Nick once on the film “Survival”. He played my husband. I enjoyed working with him. I didn’t know anyone else on set and we clicked right away. We had a good time and it was fun. He gets right down to business and when the scene is over he knows how to have fun. We’re a lot alike and on the same wavelength.

Debra Gutjahr Hale: As an EP, I’ve worked with him on 3 films. Worked with him as an actor on 6 or 7 films. He’s a better EP. As an EP he has never failed

Wayne Slaten: I’ve cast him in a role but haven’t worked with him yet for Patriot Act. I’ve worked with him as EP on three films. He’s really good about marketing, putting together your packages Nick loves to be in everything. Here’s my take on his acting…shave your head and play a Jewish holocaust victim. That way I can see your range. I cast him in parts I knew he could play so he didn’t need to audition. He gets a bad reputation because he wants to be in everything, but he can’t be in Ronn Head: I’ve only worked with him on Bright Ideas and I wrote a role for him. It was part of the deal of him coming along as an EP. He was a great EP. I was really happy, I was able to keep Bright Ideas going. He came aboard, and the production kept growing and growing, so without him probably wouldn’t have been able to finish.

C47Houston: There are numerous opinions of what we ought to do, but do you think, from what you have seen and experienced, that it is possible for the movie making community, here in Houston, to rise above and be competitive?

Mr. Nicholson: Honestly, I want the film community here in Houston to be as competitive as any film community in this country. Do I think we CAN be competitve? Yes. (Although I know a few people who would disagree with me.) Do I think we WILL be competitve? I highly doubt it. There are too many underlying problems that need to be fixed.

C47Houston: What do you think is the hurdle that needs to be addressed?

Mr. Nicholson: It’s two fold – In my opinion, until the majority of filmmakers distinguish themselves as “professionals” instead of “hobbyists” AND start creating films that can compete on the national level, the Houston independent film community will be hard pressed to rise above the competition.

C47Houston: Sounds as though we are fighting an uphill battle when it comes to competing with Major studios. It is obvious that their pool of talent is limitless, considering that they have budgets. WE don’t have that kind of luxury here in Houston. You are considered an expert in the field as a critic, as an actor and as a producer, in your opinion, are local talent able to fully understand the need for being prepared and being ready as professional actors?

Mr. Nicholson: I believe that it is not so much that we need to compete with major studios. We need to compete with independent films on a state and national level before we can even think of competing with major studios. We have access to the same resources as everyone else. Do we utilize those resources? No. C47Houston: And, why not?

Mr. Nicholson: Well, for whatever reason be it a lack of funding, a lack of experience, a lack of preparedness, a lack of vision or a lack of confidence, each (and other factors) are obstacles in the Houston film community being prepared and ready for the abundant resources that exist. In our “indie” community, it’s safe to say that casting the same actors repeatedly doesn’t leave a lot of doors open for other actors.

There are many talented actors here in Houston of varying ages and abilities. For the local talent here to move toward becoming professional actors that can compete on a bigger stage, training, studying and working with different directors is necessary.

C47Houston: I would say that practice makes perfect and training, studying and working with different directors exposes an actor to more of a pool of talented filmmakers.

Mr. Nicholson: Of course, but not everyone that has an acting class

is qualified to teach. Training with experienced professionals with resumes that have the experiences you want to have is the most intelligent decision an actor can make. Take a look at the success YOUR acting coach has had in the industry. Have they been in major films with real roles or have they just been extras with one line of dialogue, or God forbid, a stand in? Why study with someone whose claim to fame is they made several short films and won a 48 hr Film Race award or something equivalent? I’m not taking anything away from the actors who have won awards like that, I’m just saying that you should study with the BEST and you’ll learn to be a better actor. Find someone who has the kind of resume you want, that can help you personally and go learn. It’s that simple.

C47Houston: You mentioned that filmmakers need to distinguish themselves as “professionals” instead of “hobbyists”; as it relates to untapped resources…what are your thoughts?

Mr. Nicholson: In my opinion, it’s wise to take advantage of the re=sources many people tend to ignore. In myself, Houston has a conduit to Hollywood because I can help a filmmaker increase their odds of reaching the studios just by giving them feedback that will help them sell their film. The people that have learned to do this and reached out to me have had success with distributors. Remember, of all the features made in Houston, there are only SEVEN (7) that have received true distribution (out of approximately 200 that have been made over the past decade).

C47Houston: So would you say that acquiring true distribution sets the bar for success?

Mr. Nicholson: I do. I personally believe that your film getting distribution is the barometer of success in the film industry whether people here want to believe it or not. You can make 2 or 3 films a year, or shorts and a feature every year, but unless you’re making money by selling your projects through distribution, you basically have just made lovely sets of coasters for your family to use during the holidays. If you’re making films just for the joy of it and you don’t care whether anyone sees them or don’t care if they make money, then no, I’m not the person for you to reach out to. For those of you who see the big...

picture and get the point that without distribution your film means nothing, yes, I am a viable resource of information according to the professional Hollywood industry.

C47Houston: You have been honing your skills and getting more involved with projects that “fit” within the criteria you have in place and thus with your experience you are and continue to be an asset to the projects that may not have the needed “connections”, do you find that to be an easy task?

Mr. Nicholson: My experience in the industry has been an asset for years and I’ve worked extremely hard in developing my skills, knowledge, network, etc…to be honest, it has not been easy and a lot of the indie community here just don’t get it, or won’t. Maybe it’s pride or just plain ignorance where they choose not to reach out and use me as a resource. I’m very hands on because I believe that there are very few people in the film industry in Houston that have the Hollywood connections or the experience that I have “IN” this industry.

Because of this, I have high standards that must be met.

Peer Review: Troy Parker: Nick works on a lot of projects and brings a lot in terms of raising money. He’s an asset as well as an ass.

Debra Gutjahr Hale: Nick is pretty hands on. Yes, we’ve disagreed at times but on some occasions he’s been right and other times I’ve been right.

Vickie Weise: Nick can be honest and if he’s really, really honest he can appear bullyish, but I wouldn’t call him a bully.

I know he has strong opinions, and can see him being a person like that but no more than anyone else in this business. He fits in with the mold that’s in this business. I’m too nice for this business. He’s a good addition to the films he’s in where I directed.

Robert Jauregui: I have not experienced any bully tactics from Nick. Never seen or heard Nick bully any one. Although, he can be like a kid who doesn’t get his way sometimes, but it would have taken a lot longer to get Indie Girl made and would have been done on a much smaller scale and budget without his help. I would not have been able to obtain the professional level of cast and crew that I had if he wasn’t involved. Yes, he has followed through on his promises on everything he said he was going to do and then some. I would have him EP my next project, without question.

Matt Carter: Nick doesn’t get in the way of a director. He doesn’t run a set but he does run a professional film project.

C47Houston: You are gaining a lot of experience and ultimately your ideas; your voice and your opinions become an “asset” to a project…is that the case for Nick Nicholson or do you take a more back seat approach and let the production team determine the fate of the project?

Mr. Nicholson: Thank you for classifying my involvement as an “asset” to projects I’m involved in.

But, to answer your question, I take a very hands-on approach with the projects I am involved with because of my experience and training. Before I choose to get involved, I have certain criteria that must be met. The ultimate goal is to make a great film and it starts with a great production team. The success or fate of the project depends on several variables. Because of my experience as a film critic, I have access to certain people and information that helps me create a viable film project.

It’s these assets that propel me to take a more hands-on approach.

He’s hands on and when he says he’s gonna take care of things, he does. He knows the right people to get things done. Nick keeps every promise he makes. One of the reasons he is as good as he is, frankly, is because on any of his films, he has always paid the crew and cast. Always fair with money as an EP. Jenimay Walker: He’s very hands on. He’s absolutely an asset.

Wayne Slaten: He hasn’t been super hands on, but when we get to the point we need certain skills, yes, he will be very hands on. I work with people that I trust, and I trust Nick. Yes he’s been an asset. Of course, without his help I would find a way to figure it out, but having him in the EP role is critical. With Nick he’s made good on all the promises he’s made on every film and all the stuff he’s done. Patriot Act is getting made a different way, and as an EP he brings money to the table and it is his responsibility to follow up on the process. His role is to question why it’s taking so long and he does that. He understands the process.

Ronn Head: He always did what he said he was going to do no matter how long it took. As far as post production, we have constant dialogue on what’s going on with the movie, what’s happening. I view him as a partner, not an asset. He has as an important role in the making of this movie as I do, even though it’s my “baby.” I keep him updated, weekly sometimes more.

C47Houston: As you know, we have known you for several years, We have followed your ups and downs and have followed both your acting and producing careers. But, as an actor… and, a very good one at that, are you in a position of picking and choosing the projects you put your name on OR are you still taking anything that comes your way?

Mr. Nicholson: As an actor I have been very lucky and I have worked hard to get certain roles. I don’t get cast for everything I audition for. I choose a role based on the script and character that I might play AND, like anyone else, I audition and hope to be cast.

Chuck Walker: Nick is very cooperative, easy to direct and easy to work with.

We just had one day together. He’s obviously a character actor.

C47Houston: What is your particular process for determing if you are going to take a part?

Mr. Nicholson: Personally, I take a “wait and see” approach on projects that come my way because each role is a learning experience.

I don’t want to be typecast or pidgeon holed into certain types of roles.

I always read the script first to guage my interest on the part. I have become much more selective over the past few years and have found myself saying “thank you but no thank you” to roles that are offered moreso than those that I accept. I say no to projects based on many things, including those roles which I feel the script is bad or the experience will be unsatisfactory.

Jemma Evans: I think he’s a good actor. We have had conversations that actors should always study, that you’re never that good you should not study.

Every actor should. Working consistently is important. Studying acting is important.

C47Houston: WE understand that you are not new to acting and that you have been acting for some time.

Mr. Nicholson: That is correct. In Houston, people only see me as being an actor for the past few years. Few people know that I started acting as a child and have studied professionally for years. Of course, life gets in the way and jobs came along. I rediscovered my passion for acting and once it was reingnited I put all of my energies into it.

Peer Review: Matt Carter: I don’t particularly think Nick is as natural an actor as I consider myself to be. He’s not trained the way I am. As an actor he pushes. I don’t really think he’s that good of an actor and that’s my gut feeling. I’ve never seen an awesome Nick Nicholson performance. (He’s ambitious in wanting to be an actor. It’s not his habitat. Film is his natural habitat as a producer, maybe even as a director.)

Jenimay Walker: As an actor, he’s very talented. Who else from Houston is getting the kind of roles in blockbuster films like he has?

Robert Jauregui: As an actor, in his previous films that I have seen, he didn’t have as much screen time, but in Indie Girl, he is funny and quick witted and takes his strengths and makes the character better which brings those performances out. Nick takes direction well, he never disagreed with my direction, he’s open to direction both during rehearsal and shooting.

C47Houston: We have touched on this earlier but it’s worth dwelling into a bit further. There are lot of people that do NOT realize that you are and have been instrumental in creating a viable film community in the Houston Greater area. What is your ultimate and ulterior goal with regard to this community in Houston and across Texas?

Mr. Nicholson: Personally, I would like to see the film community in Houston (and across Texas) be as good and as competitive as possible.

I would like to see our independent film community rival those in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York and New Orleans where major studios are shooting majority of their films.

C47Houston: We have and continue to have simialar goals, but?

Mr. Nicholson: “BUT”, it is NOT going to happen until people start making smarter decisions about learning and utilizing the resources that are available to them and making better films. We have a TON of “producers” in Houston, but how many of them have actually sold a film? I’m more than happy to help be instrumental in growing Houston into a viable competitive film community. It doesn’t do you any good to hitch your horses to a wagon with square wheels. Think about it.

Again, work with people that have achieved what you are aiming for.

Find a mentor or at least hire a producer with solid credentials at helming a film and getting distribution for that film so the investors are getting their ROI.

Peer Review: Shawn Welling: It depends in the context of what ulterior goals or motives means. Nick is a go-getter and sometimes you have to pull the reigns back. I work with dancers and actors and I find that all actors are crazy. As a director you are a therapist as much as you’re trying to get want you want. You do the best you can to do that. Nick genuinely has a great heart and wants to do well and improve the quality of films in Houston. He goes for it and sometimes there are words that come out in a conversation that can be interpreted the wrong way, but he is well-meaning. He truly is genuine and has everyone’s best interest at heart.

Debra Gutjahr Hale: He does try to get involved in too many projects and spreads himself too thin. There’s a lot of hurdles to jump for everybody, but having the ability to have someone like Nick go out there on your behalf is certainly helpful. Nick can help you open up doors that we in Houston have no access to, but you still have to sell your film. He needs to be more selective with the films he is involved with as EP. Rober Jauregui: He has this yearning for acceptance and needs to be needed.

He needs to be a lot more selective with his choices. Now that he has over 20 films under his belt and has raised over one million dollars for independent film projects, he can now start turning down projects and tell people what they need to do to make their projects better. I don’t believe he has any ulterior motives.

He really believes that Houston and it’s film community can showcase it’s talent base and that it can be recognized outside of Houston. There’s zero structure here, very little support, no incentives or tax breaks. It’s gonna have to be a grass roots movement. It’s bigger than any one person can do. It’s gonna take organzations and real authority to help break the barriers.

Josh Starnes: He wants to see the film scene improve and get better and that films get made. I’ve never witnessed any attitude of his where he wants power in the industry in the Houston film community. He’s genuine.

Matt Carter: There’s always a motive in anything, with anybody. He’s very hungry to be an actor and be recognized in front of the camera verses being a producer.

Wayne Slaten: Years ago Nick and I did an episode of Ahead Shot, Chad Thackston’s show, and he saw me on it. We started talking about films coming out of Houston and he said none of the indie films he had seen in Houston were really good. He saw my film “Backroad” and he liked it. He started meeting other filmmakers and that’s when he started wanting to get people outside of Houston to take us seriously as filmmakers. Since then and even now he wants

to help change the reputation that Houston makes bad films. His initial interest was to try to get the film community to be more viable.

Ronn Head: I think Nick wants to generally help people succeed. He generally cares that more projects come out of Houston and he gets involved because he has a sense of pride in it. I don’t see it as an ulterior motive. He loves making movies and likes to cultivate filmmakers.

Jemma Evans: Everything that I know of that Nick wants to do for the Houston indie film community comes from the passion he has. He’s outspoken and he wants whats best. I’ve never had a negative experience with Nick. Some people are too sensitive and if they don’t know him they may misunderstand his motives. He’s not a bully. I’m outspoken and we get along great. To produce quality work you have to be serious and passionate about it. Nick is.

And frankly if people would focus on his professional experience and put their egos aside, he would help take you to a higher level of accomplishment.

C47Houston: Producer Nick Nicholson, what have you learned about Producing?

Mr. Nicholson: Wow! Where do I start. One thing I’ve learned, as a producer, that would be beneficial to anyone is to surround yourself with people who know as much or more than you do. If you surround yourself with people that are better and know more it raises you to their level and you’re constantly learning and growing. Also, I’ve learned how to collaborate, manage my expectations and how to sell, sell, sell. I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, although that’s not a 100% formula to follow. I’ve learned who to trust and who not to trust. I’ve learned the hard way, through triumphs and a couple of failures what needs to be done to make a film worthy of distribution.

C47Houston Actor Nick Nicholson, what have you learned about Acting?

Mr. Nicholson: I’ve learned to have a deeper understanding of what makes a good director and how to trust the director and other actors.

It’s a collaborative process and being open to ideas is fundamental as well as being vulnerable. As an actor, you have to be willing to take chances and stretch beyond your comfort zone.

C47Houston: In your opinion, what is the biggest disadvantage you are witnessing with regard to filmmaking in HOUSTON and what can be done to ease this disadvantage?

Mr. Nicholson: The biggest disadvantage I am witnessing are people’s egos and their unwillingness to learn from one another. I can spot a true professional versus the ones that are in it to just say they “made a film.” There are many talented filmmakers in Houston and they’re content to enter weekend contests or make films without raising capital to find the best talent, director or crew. They don’t think beyond the production until they can screen their film and then only their cast, friends and family see it. You know…the rinse, repeat, do it again theory.

C47Houston: You seem to have a bit of distian toward the egotisical and the not-so-serious moviemakers.

Mr. Nicholson: Not so much, but, I find that most films made in Houston find themselves in post production purgatory, languishing for years before anyone will see them. Many of the Houston filmmakers don’t have a plan on how to distribute or make money with their films.

They may submit to festivals and win a few awards, but all that does is feed their egos. Also, there is a whole lot more to being a director than yelling “action” or “cut” and getting your ubiquitous “circle jerk” at your Alamo screening. You have an obligation to follow everything through to the end…and the end means seeing your movie on the big screen or in store shelves across the country or internationally. VOD does not equate to distribution. VOD is an ok platform to be seen and build a fanbase but you still must recognize you have a great deal more to do as you strive for that ultimate professional goal of domestic and international distribution.

Peer Review: Troy Parker: The Houston film community is a tricky thing and we’re not all on the same page as a lot of others. Not everybody plays nice in the same sandbox. Unfortunately it’s not a nurturing environment.

Debra Gutjahr Hale: I haven’t found any downsides to working with him, but, if he is an EP on your film and you’re not holding yourself to industry standards, he might not be the right guy for you.

Vickie Weise: If he really wants to push something it’s because it’s beneficial to the project, the times I’ve with him. I’ll work with NN anytime. If he says he’s gonna do something he’s gonna do it.

Robert Jauregui: He’s too fucking tall. LOL

Matt Carter: No downsides, except for how he can rub people the wrong way. Some people are too thin skinned and I will leave it at that. I will work with him in the future.

Jenimay Walker: Always a positive and amazing experience working with Nick.

Wayne Slaten: One time he had an issue with an actor on Osprey where the actor said something about Nick and Nick just wouldn’t let it go. Nick was persistant, and it created a lot of tension that didn’t need to be there. Nick doesn’t know how to let things go, but later they got along and everything turned out fine. It’s hard to make a movie with tension on the set and I try to control it but sometimes it’s best to just walk away. Nick cares, he’s not doing it as a whim or just for his ego. He’s really involved. He wants to see Houston get recognized. He can get things done.

Ronn Head: No. He stretches himself too thin sometimes. He wants to help everybody. I get it but I’m selfish and I want all of his attention. He legitimatley wants to make quality projects and he’s one of the few people who truly strives to help others.

C47Houston: What is your honest opinion about the Texas Incentive Program. Worth it or not?

Mr. Nicholson: In my opinion, NOT, especially compared to the film incentives in states like Louisiana and Georgia. Until the fimmakers here make better films, they can’t take advantage of the film incentives Texas has because they won’t have the investment capital available to them to create on that level.

C47Houston: You kind of answered that the Texas Incentive Program is not worth the time until better movies are made and invenstment capital is realized to take advantage of the incentives, with that said, do you honestly think that the more money pumped into the incentive program by the Texas legislature will result in the making of more movies in Texas?

Mr. Nicholson: I think it will help in some cases, but it’s not the singular solution. Texas has a lot to offer. What we lack in Houston specifically are production studios that can be used by both indie filmmakers AND the major studios, should they decide to film here.

C47Houston: Mr. Nicholson, we thank you for your time and we have one last question. Again, we have known you for several years. We have been following your ventures in the field and will continue to...

be in a position to observe, to learn, to be part of and to be able to act and produce movies.

As an ACTOR and knowing what you know today, what kind of advice can you parlay to others that are seeing you as a role model and want to act?

Mr. Nicholson: I can not stress this enough…but study with the best you can afford. Go take classes in Los Angeles or New York City.

Work with a variety of directors because each director has their unique style. Stretch beyond your comfort zone. Be fearless.

C47Houston: As a PRODUCER, what kind of advice can you give to investors as a way to incite them to fund a project and why should they?

Mr. Nicholson: Investing in a film is like any other investment, it is a RISKY buisness. Investors want to know one thing…“What’s the ROI”? As a producer you find ways to satisfy the investor. Esentially, you’re selling a product or a brand. You have to convince them it’s worth it to them to put their hard earned money into your product. If you can’t promise them a return on their money, find out what else they want and see if you can deliver.

C47Houston: Do you believe that it is getting easier or becoming a hard task to convince an inventor to open his/her wallet?

Mr. Nicholson: It’s getting harder to convince investors to invest in films in Houston because of the same problems mentioned earlier, lack of development and preparation, inexperience, poor decisions resulting in poor film quality. Investors are smart (don’t underestimate them) and they see the films coming out of Houston.

Peer Review and Closing thoughts from Writer, Director and Producer Judy Garlow: I admit that I was a skeptic about Nick Nicholson and his abilities as both an actor and as an Executive Producer. We’ve been friends for over 5 years.

We’ve had many friendly and sometimes “not so” friendly debates, but I will say this: after interviewing numerous professionals in the film community from both Houston and Los Angeles that have worked with him, they all essentially said that ”Nick is no slouch and should be taken seriously.” Nick brings more to Houston’s indie film community than I ever expected or knew.

I learned that he is trustworthy, reliable, delivers on his promises and has very high profes-sional standards. I learned that his knowledge and ability in what he can do, in terms of finding money and investors; marketing; packaging the film’s pro- posal and business plan with a realistic budget; securing distribution and cast-ing recognizable A or B list actors, is further evidence that he is a force to be reckoned with and he knows what he is doing. There’s a lot of negativity that is pervasive in Houston’s film community and yes, he’s been the target of some of it because he is outspoken and speaks with a lot of bravado, but the reality here is that he can back it up.

As for his acting, I know he works hard and auditions a lot. He travels to California a great deal and he has been cast in some of the biggest theatrical releases and worked alongside several A-list actors. The small roles I’ve seen him do locally don’t really do him justice. Not everyone knows that he started acting when he was five and yes, there’s always room for improvement but he is one of the hardest working actors I know. You may not like Nick and you may think he’s full of crap, but that does not take away the fact that he can deliver on his promises, he is a viable resource and one of the biggest assets to the film community. Nick is the man you want on your team. I’m no longer a skeptic and he’s earned my respect even more. The smart filmmakers already have utilitzed what he has to offer and I plan to do the same.

Possessing high standards and a professional, be prepared to work hard and be humble enough to admit when you’re wrong or misguided about a person or your project.

Finally, whether you utilize Nick, let’s come together as a film community that supports each other as artists instead of tearing each other down.

Great news coming out of the 10101 Films Production camp.

Houston Director Jason Leal successfully met his funding goals and will start production of their new movie, “Meggan’s Journey”. Crowdfunding through KickStarter.com the funding campaign was able to raise an impressive $12.065 out of a 12K goal, at the very last moment.

KickStarter is an all-or-nothing crowdfunding site. But, the team was able to meet their funding goals and will now receive their funds. In addition, help from an “Angel Donor” was able to match any donations pledged on the last day of the campaign. Good job Houston! Good job.

Produced by 10101 Films, Jenny Waldo and written by Mr. Leal the story follows Meggan, a young 30-something woman who is dealing with cancer. The movie takes the audience into what it is like to date, pay bills, look for a job and to maintain contentious family relationships all while living with the disease. The story is an exploration into the emotions all of us feel who are affected by cancer.

Written by Mr. King the story follows a young woman who holds the secret to human survival in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a huge solar storm that came in the form of a chemical heat wave that has erased most of humanity from the face of the earth. With a disaster plan in place, the “Government” had never declared a state of emergency because of the severity and threat of the storm was on a massive and epic logical scale. There was no need to declare an emergency as nothing on earth could save you from what was to come. But there were survivors.

When a religious cult blames the disaster on the lack of Christian faith, the radical zealots take the “act of god” into their own hands by banding together and executing the innocent. When the young savior of humanity is threatened, a mysterious group of warriors called the Knights of the New Order, rise up to protect her and battle the band of radicals.

C47Houston: Thank you Mr. Living for answering a few questions for our readers and followers. You are native Houstonian, are you not?

Mr. Living: I am a native Houstonian but born to parents from east Texas and Louisiana. I have yet to reside anywhere else outside of the Houston area other than Missouri City and Spring.

C47Houston: An acting career is a career not everyone can do. It’s a hard job to make money unless you have talent, of which you do, and dedication, of which you have, what is it about the craft of acting that appeals to you?

Mr. Living: There are numerous factors that appeal to me, about acting. I love the idea of being able to play "make-believe" and to pretend to be someone else. I thoroughly enjoy developing the mentality of the various characters I play and making it my own. With acting, I can push the envelope a bit without the penalty.

C47Houston: We have seen you on the screen and you seem to be very natural on the screen, does acting comes easy to you or is it something that comes with difficulty and practice?

Mr. Living: Well, thank you. Actually, acting took some practice, for me. I use to have a speech impediment as a child and I’ve had to learn to control the nervous energy that I would always get in the beginning of my acting career in order to articulate more efficiently. I certainly feel that I posses a natural affinity for being seen on-camera or a stage, so there's no stage fright. But, I still get nervous, at times, just because I respect the industry that much and know that I'm still a work-inprogress. It’s all about practice.

C47Houston: You seem like the perfect candidate for a super-hero character, you are tall, you have a ‘look’ and you have an interesting voice. If there is a super-hero character you could play, what or who would it be?

Mr. Living: YES!!!! I would love to play a super-hero! The type of hero that I'd like to play would something in the lines of "Hancock" portrayed by the one and only Will Smith. Also, "Blade: The Vampire Hunter/ Daywalker" portrayed by the one and only Wesley Snipes would be equally fantastic to play. To be cast in a role similar to either one of those characters would definitely be a dream come true for me! To be honest, I actually feel that it is going to happen to me and soon! I can feel it.

C47Houston: You are relatively new to the acting scene in the Houston area but you are making a huge impact on the local and regional communities, where would you like to see yourself when it comes to your career choice?

Mr. Living: Well, as far as where I'd like to see myself with my acting career, I have to resort to my personal daily affirmation: ‘I am a successful, prosperous, free-thinking, free-spirited working actor in the entertainment industry who is living harmoniously, abundantly and continuously progressing in film, television, commercial, voice-over and theater.’ I refuse to put a limit to the heights my acting career will take my life!

C47Houston: Most of the actors we have talked to, over the years, have a particular style of acting that they practice. Most are using several techniques in combination and depending on the role or part they are playing.

Do you practice a particular style and/or how do you get into “character”?

Mr. Living: Personally, I don't have a particular method, or technique, that I study or use for any part that I accept. I, simply, meditate on the character and develop a story for him based on what's given in the script.

Then, I formulate behavioral patterns for my character and do my best to make him real and organic. Aside from what the director instructs me to bring forth with the character, I make him a real person and as believable as possible.

C47Houston: We have seen you in several regional “high-profile” commercials on television. What is your secret to securing this sort of part?

Mr. Living: hahaha. Actually, there is NO secret other than being honest with yourself! In my case, it involves focusing my intentions on the end result and trusting the most high that what is for me will not miss me in order to attain my desires and accomplish my goals. In all of that, I remain positive with my thinking towards to end result and to maintain an attitude of gratitude for what I am conspiring for myself. This also means being okay with the roles that I do not get regardless of how desperately I may have wanted them.

C47Houston: Okay, so you get an audition, how do you handle the “we will call you” response? In other words, how do you handle the rejection?

Mr. Living: When it comes to “rejection”, I simply let it be. I feel as if there is a balance and order to each of our lives and that polarity exists in all things manifested thoughtfully. I expect to book the roles that will further my career, and, being that we create our destiny, I am okay with not receiving a role. This “neutrality” has to exist for me because whether I receive the part or not, I know that it's all working for my greater good.

C47Houston: I would imagine that you have a level of experience in getting auditions, going to auditions, call backs and securing a part, what have you seen as a major problem consistently occurring that prevents someone from being taken seriously as an actor at an audition, in the waiting room or afterwards?

Mr. Living: In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes that some actors make is being over-confident or having lack of it. This creates room for emotional instability, if disappointed by not receiving the role. I feel as if you should be your natural self and bring your own authenticity to the bar, as opposed to being obnoxiously over-bearing (unless the roles calls for that). Above all that, be sure to “listen” to the instructions and/or di-

rections given to you by the casting director/casting agent during the audition or prior to being seen. Trust your intuition and give it all you got!

C47Houston: You live in Houston Texas. You have a job that pays your bills and yet you want to be in front of a camera and you want to perform for an audience. What sort of person do you have to be to be able to do this kind of work and to be able to do successfully?

Mr. Living: To be successful in this industry, you must be persistent in pursuing your desire with passion and have time flexibility, especially, if you're still holding down a job. This requires a purposedriven mind and the active drive to succeed. None of us knows which booking is going to lead us to being financially secure and/or to sustain our desired livelihood (for those of us who aren't there yet). Remaining positive with your intentions, staying active in your pursuit, as well as, being willing and able to travel are critical elements to being successful in this industry.

C47Houston: We have seen your work on several independent projects, here in Houston. You have just wrapped on Director Jonathan Milton’s new feature movie, “The Foreign Exchange Student”. Tell us about that project?

Mr. Living: Thanks for the recognition! Yes, they just wrapped filming on the set of "The Foreign Exchange Student", a Milton Brothers Production. Director Jonathan Milton and is brother Cinematogra-

pher/Producer Justin Milton made working with them very enjoyable. I feel as if we all learned from one another. The movie is a suspense thriller in which I play "Andrew Reams" who is the head of the household to a family of four that welcomes a foreign exchange student from the Dominican Republic into their home. Sinclair, the foreign exchange student, brings suspense and drama to Texas that began in her native homeland.

C47Houston: We understand that the part you play was built on real-life experiences and therefore you could draw from experience in constructing the character.

Mr. Living: Absolutely. My character "Andrew" is a loving husband and father who enjoys his family but isn't receiving sufficient appreciation from his wife, which opens the door to temptation. Personally, this is one of the easiest roles that I've ever portrayed because I AM, in real life, a family-oriented man and I can relate to Andrew's marital issues (being that I underwent similar suffering in my former marriage). The movie is in post and it will, hopefully, be released in 2016.

C47Houston: You played a Captain, if I recall.

Mr. Living: Indeed. In this particular movie, I played Captain Jett Lightning, space captain that has, as part of the “Rocket Ranger” program, a Jr. Rocket Ranger tagging along with him for the day before meeting up with Matt Mercury and, of course, saving the galactic beyond from the maniacal nemesis "Dr. Brainwave" who is hell-bent on planetary destruction.

C47Houston: What else are you working on?

Mr. Living: Currently, I am in rehearsal for a play called "The Old Settler" written by John Henry Redwood. The Artistic Director of the Ensemble Theater Eileen J. Morris directs this theatrical production.

We originally performed the play during the Ensemble Theater's 20132014 season of Main Stage Performances. Ms. Morris saw fit to submit the production to the "National Black Theater Festival" (www.nbtf.org) where it was selected to perform as a part of this year's lineup.

C47Houston: When is this play running?

C47Houston: You are also in director Bill Hughes’ new project “Matt Mercury: Plot of the Galactic Mastermind” that premiered last month, July, at this year’s Space City ComicCon. This was a first for you to be playing mostly in front of a green screen. How did that go?

Mr. Living: The production of "Matt Mercury" was one of the most fun film experiences that I have encountered in my acting career, thus far! To be able to work on the green screen with limited props was really exciting because I was able to use more of my imagination to create a scene around me. Of course, this is a team effort and other actors and production crew helped to make it all seem tangible and real without the computer graphics that would be digitally inserted later being seen during filming.

C47Houston: What kind of challenges are involved with “green screen” type of work?

Mr. Living: Although, it was an experience, I have to say that there really weren't any challenges with prepping or acting in this type of production that, I can recall, other than maintaining continuity for having to pantomime the effects/props that would be added-in “digitally” during post-production. I am looking forward to doing more productions with Bill and his wife Heidi.

Mr. Living: At the National Black Theater Festival, a 6-day event being held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina coming up August 3rd through August 9th.

C47Houston: And, what part are you playing in “The Old Settler”?

Mr. Living: Well, in this production, I am portraying "Husband Witherspoon".

C47Houston: And, we understand you are in a stage production with director Josh Morrison.

Mr. Living: That is correct. Once I get back from North Carolina, I will begin prepping for his production of “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity” at the Stages Repertory Theater. In this production I will be playing the part of the cocky, arrogant wrestler “Chad Deity”. The play is set to perform as the kickoff to their 2015-2016 season.

C47Houston: Apart from theater, are you working motion picture or television projects?

Mr. Living: Well, later this year I am looking forward to working on several upcoming webisodes and short films projects with my business partners, Chigozie Nwokeafor and Gerald Fletcher of Original Seed Entertainment productions company. I also have a positive vibration...

about the possibility of working on a feature production with David E. Talbert, the writer and director of the feature films, "First Sunday" and "Baggage Claim". And, of course, I will be working on other projects that, right now, I can’t talk about.

C47Houston What do you, honestly, think about the Houston film scene?

Mr. Living: In my opinion, the film scene, here in Houston, is slowly evolving to the entertainment Mecca that it could be. I think we still have a long way to go before we get there. From what I do know of the reasoning why this city hasn't arrived to that statute of grandeur, that it ought to be is due to the lack of tax incentives. I am trusting that all of that will be resolved in the near future. This truly is a beautiful city with so many locations for film opportunities and the amount of talent here is astonishing! I feel as if we have all of what is needed to be the next “Hollywood” or dare I say, the first "Houstonwood"! It's just a matter of time before we're filming multi-megamillion dollar productions solely here in this city!

C47Houston: Do you see room for improvement?

Mr. Living: I think it’s already happening in the political arenas that have held us back in the past. I was really wanted the Astrodome to be converted into a production studio, probably not as it stands now, but the location and space is prime real estate for such an endeavor. As with most factions and situations of the sort, I am sure that the prevention or delay of that dream is monetary-based.

C47Houston: You are an outstanding actor, so we think. You are SAG/AFTRA eligible. When do you anticipate joining the club?

Mr. Living: Currently, I am still working on my SAG/AFTRA eligibility and anticipate receiving acceptance within less than a year, perhaps by the end of this year. Now that circumstances have smoothed themselves out in my personal life, I am able to direct my energy and attention to ensuring that this happens.

C47Houston: Whom do you consider your movie idols?

Mr. Living: There are many actors and actresses that I have always enjoyed watching perform their craft on the big screen for various reasons. but I'll do my best to keep it minimal. For their cinematic presence and character conviction, I'd have to say Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro, Laurence Fishburne, Anthony Hopkins, Isaiah Washington and Al Pacino for their charisma and personality, Then there is Will Smith, Colin Ferrel, Don Cheadle, Johnny Depp, Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey, Jr.. Some actresses that have inspired me with their tenacity and brilliance include Ruby Dee, Angela Bassett, Meryl Streep, Alfre Woodard, Viola Davis and Charlize Theron.

C47Houston: You have worked with all types of producers and directors, but how do you deal with difficult directors?

Mr. Living: Difficult producers and Directors? No Way! But, seriously, people will be people and the best way I found to best deal with the different mentalities of difficult directors and producers is to let them be who they are and to do my best to maintain my inner peace.

You can't allow them to bring you down or feel negative about yourself.

Just from personal experience, I have found that the director may choose to be difficult with you because they see the potential in you that you have yet to develop. This could be very well their way of bringing it out of you in an attempt to break down the walls that you're holding up against “self”. It is said that enlightenment doesn't come without destruction and riddance of what no longer serves you.

C47Houston: Again, you are relatively new to the acting scene, however, from the first time you set your foot on the set to this current period of time, what have you learned about the craft?

Mr. Living: I have learned to differentiate between theatrical acting

and cinematic acting. They are quite different. I have learned the importance of “character development” and adopting a “character's behavior patterns” to ensure believability (the characters that we choose to portray have to be real and organic). For me, that means that I have to totally immerse myself into this being, I have created, and become that character, so much so that everyone watching believes that I am that character.

C47Houston: Mr. Living, thank you for your candor and honesty in answering a few questions for us. One last question; you are an outstanding actor, you have a passion and you are determined, what kind of advice can you give to those that see you as a role model…how can you guide them to achieve their dreams?

Mr. Living: Thank you kindly for your positive sentiment! For those who are bold and thoughtful enough to achieve their dreams and manifest their destiny, I say to you the following: use your imagination and set a goal (or at least an idea of your goal), follow it with positive intentions, strategic planning and action, don't worry about the "how" it's going to happen, just focus on it happening, trust your intuition because it's your higher self talking to you and always, always, always be thankful for what you have and practice gratitude! Shelton introduced me and the agent enjoyed my performance and asked if I had representation (I didn’t). I signed with them the following week.

Elia Esparza of the Public Relations company Always Evolving and Laura Sixtos are happy to invite the pubic to watch the Hulu Original hit Internet/Television show “East Los High” Season 3.

The season started Mid-July, last month, with a new and more sizzling third season of the hugely popular and addictive drama.

There is a Houston and Texas connection with Actress Vannessa Vasquez who plays the complicated and very dysfunctional young woman by the name of Camila.

East Los High centers around romance, dance and the struggles of a group of Latino/Hispanic teens living in East Los Angeles. Of special significance is that the drama showcases an all-Latino/Hispanic cast and focuses on the lives of teenagers growing up in the East Los Angeles area from the American-Latino/Hispanic perspective.

Coming back in a recurring role as “Jocelyn” is Actress Andrea Sixtos.

Jocelyn is a student who confronts all that comes with being a Latina/ Hispanic teen, being gay and struggling with the dynamics of a more than conservative family home life. The character is also confronted with the “teen” issues of falling in love at a young age and with the complicated and dysfunctional Camila, play by Vannessa Vasquez.

“It’s a conversation that is long overdue,” comments actress Andrea Sixtos. “I am thrilled to be the one who brings this topic to the forefront.”

Being cast as a young woman whose lifestyle is vastly different from her own reality wasn’t a stretch for Ms. Sixtos. “I am not sure I have a better understanding of what it is like to be a gay Latino teenage,” explains Andrea about her character Jocelyn, “but when the cameras were rolling Jocelyn and I were one entity. But, if I were to speak for Jocelyn, and what she went through...well, it was really tough for me on an emotional level, especially when the character “came-out” as a lesbian.”

According to the Human Rights Campaign, gay teens are 8.4 times more likely to report having attempted suicide and 5.9 times more likely to report high levels of depression compared to peers that reported no or low levels of family rejection.

“Jocelyn was bullied,” Ms. Sixtos further noted about her character, “talked about in a negative way, loses friends (her best friend) and is disowned by her grandfather throughout the season. Not fun. But, the admirable thing about Jocelyn is that she is such a strong and confident girl and somehow moves past all of the ridicule and pain because she believes in herself and who she is as a person.”

Veteran actor Miguel Najera, who plays Jocelyn’s stern and nononsense grandfather, Jose, in seasons 2 and 3 found it a fun character to play. “The grandparents serve as a moral compass where family, culture and principles are everything,” explains actor Miguel Najera.

“This multi-generational approach serves as guidance where the young can’t find answers through their peer.”

Andrea Sixtos was born into a culturally diverse entertainment family in Hayward, California, and has three sisters who are also actors steadily making their way onto film and television shows. Her older sister, Alicia Sixtos starred in the first and second season of East Los High and returns in a supporting role as “Maya” in season 3. She also as a recurring role in the ABC Family television show “The Fosters”. Andrea’s younger sister, Veronica Sixtos made her independent debut in “Pocha”, an award-winning project currently running the festival circuit.

So You Want to Write a Treatment By: Norman Ray Fitts: Writer, Screenwriter and Novelist

In our continues series and in this issue, we will talk about the concept of a “Treatment”.

Typically, a film treatment (or treatment, as it is called) is used in the motion picture industry as a means of marketing a screenplay. Generally, screenwriters uses a “treatment” to pitch a story or a story concept without a full-fledged script in-hand.

A treatment has two purposes. It can assist the screenwriter in organizing his script before he creates the screenplay AND it is used as a marketing tool in an effort to raise funds (as in pitching the story to likely investors).

The Receptionist looks at her for a moment, and then points to a chair against the wall.

RECEPTIONIST If you’ll sit over there I’ll have someone take you down.

What is a treatment?

A treatment is a type of prose telling of the story. Each scene in the film is described in prose or just a paragraph. There is no screenplay format involved. It allows someone to see, by scene, what is contained in each scene. When you are talking with potential investors, a treatment is much easier for them to read than wading through a lengthy screenplay format. For instances, a 151-scene screenplay may take 110 pages to write but those same 151-scenes in a treatment may take up only 15-pages, more or less.

Janet moves to the chair and sits. The Receptionist pressed a button just under the edge of her desk. Janet seems a little unsure and fidgets in her seat. The Receptionist notices.

RECEPTIONIST You’re the fifth one.

RECEPTIONIST (glancing toward the entrance) You’re about to find out Two men enter the area and approach Janet. She stands up. One is a MAN IN A SUIT (40’s). The OTHER is in uniform and is armed.

FADE IN:

INT. RECEPTION AREA – DAY JANET CROWLEY (28), attractive in an unassuming way, enters through a set of double glass doors. She is casually dressed and carries a small hand bag.

SUPER: “25 years earlier” The RECEPTIONIST (20’s) sits behind a desk intently interested in what she sees on her computer screen. Janet approaches the desk, but is ignored. She finally clears her throat. The Receptionist glances at her and smiles.

FADE OUT: As you can see, a treatment format is much easier to deal with when you are pitching your story. . In the movie industry, time is money and often times you will have one shot at “pitching” a story to investors.

Being able to condense your story to a time-efficient format is worth the time to learn.

Houston filmmaker Sharad Patel has his directorial independent feature motion picture “Somebody’s Darling” in the can and is currently running the project through the festival circuit.

Based on a short story by Sebastian Mathews and screenplay by Mr. Patel, this psychological horror story follows a fraternity president at Williamsburg University, with an obsession centered around a young coed. Hopeful courtship falls into sinister pursuit and stalking while his elite frat status and misogynic behavior is driven by some unknown factor beyond peer pressure and the date-rape culture.

Produced by the Fifth Year Company Productions, casting includes Paul Galvan, Jessa Settle, Fred Parker, Matt Tramel, Cathy Baron, Kristen Tucker and Monique Cortez in the principle roles. Mr. Patel has directed a dozen short projects including “Snail”, “Inebriatus Rex”, “Lazarus”, “Fruiting Bodies”, “The Bubble” and he just completed “Domestic Protocol”. He has been behind the camera as cinematographer for both music videos and movies and was the cinematographer for the cult feature movie by Andrew Edison, “Bindlestiffs”.

Mr. Patel is an award-winning filmmaker having screened his short movies at SXSW, Slamdance, GenArts, Beverly Hills HiDef Film Festival, Aurora Picture Show, The Houston International Film Festival and has video production for the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

August 15th and August 16th Artistic Director Cressandra Thibodeaux and her non-profit organization 14 PEWS will offer hands-on classes for adults in directing, interviewing subjects, cinematography, sound and production in a two-day Documentary Workshop Saturday August 15th and Sunday, August 16th starting at 10AM to 5PM at 14 PEWS (800 Aurora St., Houston, TX 77009). The classes will cover the creative and technical demands of telling a real story with moving images.

The art and craft of documentary filmmaking is taught through a balance of classroom instruction, hands-on video shoots and immediate directing experience.

Students in the workshop can expect to be behind the camera in the first hour, learning by doing. And, 14 PEWS has a spacious and open location to shoot their projects on a stage.

All participants will shoot on HD digital video camera and will learn hot to compose, direct, ask great questions and light their documentary’s. There will be 4 AMAZING in-class documentary shoots.

A week after the workshop, the pubic is invited to the premiere screenings of the selected final 4 short projects.

Houston Producer and Director Shedrick Stokes and SCS Films are in the post-production phase of their new feature breast cancer awareness project “Joy Comes in the Morning” .

A true story based on the book by Rebecca M. Shepard and Jessie M. Lockett, the story follows a mother and daughter who are diagnosed, six months apart, with CANCER. The journey they take together brings out the struggles, inspiration and love during their time. In telling their story, the movie will also take the audience into lives of several families from diverse backgrounds whose lives were touched by Breast Cancer.

“Joy Comes in the Morning” is intended to increase the awareness you must have to your own body, the subtle ways that CANCER can develop and the steps you can take to give yourself a fighting chance against an enemy that takes no prisoners.

Casting by Steffi Grace and Marilyn Swick actors includes Kristin McKenzie, Nick Nicholson, Evan George Vourazeris, Julitta Pourciau, Joe Grisaffi, Marilyn Swick, Alfred Castillo Jr., Sheri Oster, Michael Basil, Katelyn Merricks, Benjamin Wadsworth, Eddie Bauer Jr., Kristen Perry, Michelle Elaine, Laura Koons, Tommy Poynter, Kendra Parker, Jameshia Bankston, Mia Ruiz and Lesley Costner, just to name a few of the talented people in this movie.

Behind the camera as cinematographer is Adam Lichtenberger and cutting/splicing this feature is Gabrielle Elideth Enciso and Steffi Grace.

Houston Writer, Director and Cinematographer David Craig, Colorado Producer and Director Kirk Loudon, Eye2Eye Films and Fearless Films are in the final stages of their production shoot for their new feature horror/thriller motion picture entitled “Diggerz: Black Lung Rises”.

Post-Production is slated to start this month after a July of 2015 shoot in Trinidad Colorado.

Story by Mr. Craig and Mr. Loudon, the movie follows Raven, a young researcher. When Raven stumbles upon a town that has a history of violence and death, she discovers a creature called Black Lung. A creature created from the souls of lost miners who were killed in riots a century earlier. Every 50-years, Black Lung must feed and seeks revenge on the local townspeople. Raven and a crusty town outcast by the name of Hagedy have to stop Black Lung before he kills again. It is up to Raven to end the killing spree.

Casting includes Lauren Leal as Raven, Steve Roth as Hagerdy, Damon Pampolina, Alex Niva and Kerry Beyer.

Behind the camera as Cinematographer is David Craig. He was the cinematographer in Kirk Loudon’s award-winning feature movie “Dawn of the Crescent Moon” (David Craig IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1113735/ ) “Diggerz” will be Kirk Loudon’s third feature endeavor. He directed “Dawn of the Crescent Moon” and “Forward Slash”.
