We get all kinds of invites to a lot of screenings and premieres. Unfortunately we can not always make them all, but we try. This first time feature director invited us to see his movie and to meet some of the cast and crew. Of course, we have seen a lot of the independent movies in the area and across the State of Texas. To be honest, we were just a bit skeptical about the production value a first time feature director could attain and, at the same time, deliver something that can keep an audiences attention for 90-minutes or so. However, we were surprised to find a lot of work went into making this movie an entertaining one and a movie with above average production value attached to it. To make things even better, this particular movie maker is not sitting back and running his feature through the festival circuit, like so many teams do. This movie maker is moving onto his second feature movie before the release of his first movie. Wow!. We were thrilled that this Director and Writer accepted our interview invitation and we are happy to introduce:

Director R. Clay Ayers

C47Houston: Thank you Clay for answering a few questions. We saw your movie and we were impressed. Did you grow up in the Houston area?

Mr. Ayers: Yes I did. I grew up in the Willow Meadows/Meyerland area. Now I live in the Champions/FM 1960 area, North Houston. C47Houston: You have made and presented your first feature movie Organiztsyia. What was your motivation for picking up a camera, assembling a crew/cast and making a feature motion picture?

Mr. Ayers: Well, I have a regular job that takes up most of my time, but I have always liked doing other outside of work. While my kids were growing up, this involved coaching their sports teams, Boy Scout, chaperoning choir trips, etc. But when they got into high school, their activities took up less of my time, so I decided to start writing. C47Houston: The start of many a filmmaker.

Mr. Ayers: Yup. I was lucky enough to find myself in Tom Vaughan’s Story & Plot screenwriting class. It was in this class that,

Š 2008-2015 C47Houston News & Entertainment Magazine / All Rights Reserved

under Tom’s guidance, I wrote Organizatsiya. My original goal was not to write it so that I could make it myself. But I worked really hard on the script and wanted to do something with it. C47Houston: You get your first feature script hammered out and you movie forward?

Mr. Ayers: Not at first. It was at the SWAMP Business of Film Conference in 2013, that I ran into another Story & Plot student, Carrie Fitch (who, by the way, is an excellent writer with an award winning screenplay, Heart of a Racer). She was familiar with Organizatsiya from the class. We put our heads together, did some investigation/planning and realized we could pull it off. C47Houston: I guess a leap of faith is needed to move forward in tackling a feature project. Were you at all apprehensive in your ability to set your vision onto the screen?

Mr. Ayers: You know, being able to work with Carrie, and a couple of other Story & Plot classmates (Trae Stanley and Chris Spisak) made it possible. In addition to being a writer, Trae is a super talented cinematographer and filmmaker. Chris is an outstanding, award winning filmmaker. Both Trae and Chris have great contacts around town from which we found our cast and crew. Also Tom Vaughan helped us with some of our pre-production activities. I guess this is a long winded way of saying that with Carrie, Trae, Chris and Tom working with me, I don’t remember having much apprehension at all. C47Houston: Did you have discussions as to what kind of camera you were going to used on this movie?

Mr. Ayers: Actually, I didn’t agonize too much over the equipment we were going to use. Trae, Chris and I discussed it a little bit and came up with a consensus choice based on quality of recording, cost and availability. I am very happy with the final results. C47Houston What is your personal definition of what a director does and his/her function?

Mr. Ayers: Actually, I see myself more as a project manager rather than a director. I know that it’s a real cliché thing for managers to say ‘hire the best people and stay out of their way.’ But that’s what I tried to do. Of course there are also the bread and butter things that need to be done, scheduling, budgeting, shot lists, etc. But casting and staffing

are key in my opinion. C47Houston: What are some of the things you have learned, as a director, or in your case a project manager, in making your first feature movie?

Mr. Ayers: Well, I probably already knew this, but the most important things I learned are to have talented actors and a good script ready for your project. This is no secret and something I knew before I started. But my experiences with Organizatsiya, reinforced this. The other thing I learned is that it would have been nice to spend a little more time in pre-production. There were some tax considerations, so we wanted to get started filming before the end of the year in 2013. This rushed us a little. And, once we started filming, we tried to keep the ball rolling as best we could. C47Houston: You picked a topic in your new movie Organizatsiya that involves finding a pot at the end of a rainbow but taking it away from gangsters. You wrote the script and decided to make the movie.. I take it that you wrote the script just for entertainment value rather than a social statement. Will this be your particular genre-based story telling technique in your next movie?

Mr. Ayers: You’re right. This is for entertainment – no social statements. I love the thriller genre, but NO, our next movie, Illusions of Cyn, is very different. Illusions of Cyn is a romantic drama about a woman getting over the loss of her husband that is told through a series of flashbacks and fantasies. It’s a little non-linear and quirky, but I love the story, which was written by Robert W. Hazel. C47Houston: What are some of the things you have learned about the technical side of filmmaking?

Mr. Ayers: I learned from making my first feature, a better feel for the time required to do things (lighting set-up, make-up, wardrobe changes). Realizing the time required will allow us to make better use of everyone’s time for the next movie we make. AND, although I didn’t actually do it for the movie, I did learn a little bit more about the actual operation of the camera. Also, I became really familiar with the editing and effects programs (Premiere Pro and After Effects). C47Houston: You had a lot of action in your movie, did you have any problems with that aspect of your filmmaking process?

Mr. Ayers: We actually did. Another thing I learned is to hire an offduty police officer for crowd control. At the start of production, I didn’t know how to do this; so on our second shooting day we were out running around, brandishing weapons on Main street in Midtown. Although we weren’t too disruptive I was terrified. A police officer would have been comforting. Later on, we did hire one (from Off Duty Services). It was very handy as while we were shooting on a suburban street, the Neighborhood Watch called the actual cops on us. C47Houston: Do you have a particular style of movie making, perhaps a signature shot? Mr. Ayers: I personally think it’s too early to tell. I’m not sure if I have a particular style or signature shot yet. We’ve used all these different shot types in the movie. We would start the day with a shot list, but it was a team effort with Trae, Chris and 1st AD Loren Gilley to modify this list to best tell the story with interesting and compelling shots. C47Houston: Looking back at your feature Organiztsyia did you have some shots that you had to revise because you couldn’t pull it off due to budget restraints or your lack of knowing more of the technical side of things? Mr. Ayers: With our great team, my lack of knowledge didn’t stop us; and I think for the most part we weren’t too contrained by budget. Carrie worked with our production designer, Kelly Garcia to create incredible sets. With Trae Stanley and the audio team from Art House Sound, there weren’t any technical things we couldn’t do. However, and saying that, there was a scene in the original script where the protagonist push a Suburban over a cliff into a lake. We had to cut that scene because my wife needed her Suburban. Also, there are no cliffs in Houston. C47Houston: You are making your second feature movie. Illusions of Cyn. Is there a new confidence on your part and with previous experience…are you ready? Mr. Ayers: Carrie and I have spoken a lot about this. No question we are more prepared and more confident. We are working with many of the same crew from Organizatsiya, so there is a comfort there. Nothing

is ever exactly the same, but having gone through it once, does give us a little more confidence. Although I was pretty confident for Organizatisya anyway. C47Houston: your new movie Illusions of Cyn, when do you anticipate being in post, and anticipate release? Mr. Ayers: As we speak, we preparing for our second week of production for Illusions of Cyn. I hope to be finished with production by the end of September 2015. I would think that we could be finished with all the post-production by Summer 2016. C47Houston: You are doing what a lot of filmmakers don’t do…they usually wait and see their first baby hit the festival circuit, show it all over before making another movie. YOU are making your second project before the actual release of your first movie, what’s up with that? Mr. Ayers: I like to stay busy and I can do things in parallel. I knew I wanted to do another movie with Carrie, Trae and Chris. So while Organizatsiya was in the audio editing phase, I spent some time perusing the InkTip website. After reading dozens of scripts I found Robert W. Hazel’s Original Cyn (which we re-titled Illusions of Cyn). The ball started rolling and I didn’t want to stop it. Simple as that. C47Houston: Clay, we thank you for your valuable time.. Now that you have your first feature about to be released and you are currently working on your second feature, what advice can you pass along to younger people or even people contemplating making their first feature motion picture? Mr. Ayers: I don’t really think that I am 100% sure I’m qualified to be giving advice to other filmmakers, but as an old man with many life lessons I would say find people to work with that you like and trust. I try to be patient with people and treat everyone with respect and courtesy. I also realize that my little projects are not the center of my collaborators’ lives. They are giving up their time and talent to help me, and for that I am extremely grateful.
