The History Boys By Alan Bennett

BOX OFFICE 0845 127 2190 OR 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

Directed by Kate Saxon Designed by Libby Watson ‘Pass it on boys ... that’s the game I wanted you to learn ... pass it on’ Since it first opened in 2004, Alan Bennett’s comedy masterpiece has gone on to become one of the nation’s favourite plays. Set in the 1980s, The History Boys is the story of a group of bright, funny and unruly sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Their maverick English teacher is at odds with the young and shrewd

supply teacher, whilst their headmaster is obsessed with results and league tables. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence overflow, provoking insistent questions about history and how you teach it. Their Alevels may be over, but their true education is only just beginning. Bursting with witty one-liners and thought provoking questions, a vibrant ensemble cast bring Bennett’s Oxbridge hopefuls brilliantly to life as the boys discover the true meaning of education and give their teachers some lessons of their own. This brand new production of The History Boys fizzes with infectious energy and humour. Down to earth, relatable and incredibly funny, this is a classic entertaining night at the theatre.

The Hard Problem

Man and Superman

By Tom Stoppard

By George Bernard Shaw

Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love, Arcadia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) returns to the National Theatre with his highlyanticipated new play The Hard Problem, directed by Nicholas Hytner (Othello, Hamlet, One Man, Two Guvnors).

Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, Schindler’s List; Oedipus at the National Theatre) plays Jack Tanner in this exhilarating reinvention of Shaw’s witty, provocative classic.

Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brain science institute, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question at work, where psychology and biology meet. If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? This is ‘the hard problem’ which puts Hilary at odds with her colleagues who include her first mentor Spike, her boss Leo and the billionaire founder of the institute, Jerry. Is the day coming when the computer and the fMRI scanner will answer all the questions psychology can ask? Meanwhile Hilary needs a miracle, and she is prepared to pray for one.

A romantic comedy, an epic fairytale, a fiery philosophical debate, Man and Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live. Jack Tanner, celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor, seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and, despite the love of a poet, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary. Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, is tipped off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain, where he is captured by bandits and meets the Devil. An extraordinary dreamdebate, heaven versus hell, ensues. Following in hot pursuit, Ann is there when Tanner awakes, as fierce in her certainty as he is in his.

SCREENING Saturday 8 August 7pm NT Live presents

ARTS CENTRE

Everyman A new adaptation by Carol Ann Duffy BAFTA winner and Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road). Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out. One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy and movement by Javier De Frutos.

APRIL INFO

TICKET PRICES AND FEES

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly. The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees. The cost of a ticket is made up of: • Deal Value: The face value of the ticket set by our clients

BOX OFFICE 0845 127 2190 OR 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

• Booking Fee: All tickets, except where we sell tickets for a third party, include a 7.5% Booking Fee. This fee goes towards the running cost of our ticketing system, ticket printing, staffing and all credit, debit, cheque, and cash handling costs. These fees help us to stay an effective business, which in turn helps us reinvest in our theatres and continually improve the service we provide. • Restoration Levy: Buxton Opera House is an exquisitely beautiful Edwardian theatre and one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design. To help maintain and operate both the Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre the cost of tickets includes a restoration levy of £1 for tickets over £10 and 50p for tickets under £10. Tickets for some community events and other venues are exempt from the restoration levy.
