Welcome

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

We have a lot to look forward to this season! We welcome the UK’s two longest-established symphony orchestras to the Opera House stage. Our partnership with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic continues with two great concerts, one hosted by Classic FM’s John Suchet; whilst the Hallé make their biennial appearance in aid of Blythe House Hospice. Alongside our lunchtime Coffee Concert series and ongoing residency with the Northern Chamber Orchestra, we’re delighted to present a year-round programme of excellent classical music. There’s a huge appetite for quality folk and roots music too and we continue to present the very best touring artists across both our venues, with highlights including Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, the Afro Celt Sound System and Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker. The High Peak is becoming a centre for folk music once again; this year’s Big Session Festival was a great success with audiences coming from far afield in the UK and abroad. Next year’s Big Session dates are confirmed (Friday 28 to Monday 1 May) and the line-up will be announced soon. Follow the festival on Facebook and Twitter @BigSessionFest. December is panto season (oh yes it is…) and this year we will be holding both a relaxed performance, kindly supported by the Mayor’s Charity, and a BSL signed performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – please see page 51 for more details. We love to hear from our customers and we use your feedback to make sure you have a great experience when you visit us. We’ve listened to your comments about our website and we’re making plans to improve the site and make it mobile friendly. If you have any comments or suggestions, please email customerservice@boh.org.uk I’m delighted that our venues have been awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate for Excellence 2016, a testament to the hard work of all our staff and volunteers. Our sincere thanks go to all our customers who take the time to write a review of their visit. In a similar vein, voting will soon be open for this year’s My Theatre Matters! Most Welcoming Theatre Award. We were thrilled to be the East Midlands winner last year. Please vote for us again this year, and who knows? Maybe we’ll get the national award!

The Mercury Prize nominated and 2016 BBC2 Folk Award winner has released two critically acclaimed albums featuring songs collected first hand from the Gypsy Traveller community. Sam Lee has brought these ancient songs into the 21st century with inventive new arrangements. Along with his live band, Lee performs unconventional and contemporary interpretations of songs he has collected, often challenging people’s preconceptions of what ‘traditional folk’ should sound like. This year’s win at the BBC2 Folk Awards for Best Traditional Track has brought Lee more attention on the scene.

In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class–ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working–class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘Face’.

The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed and street–wise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to rhythm ‘n’ blues. This ‘Mod’ musical is a trans–generational musical experience celebrating the unique sound of the iconic Mod band, the Small Faces.

North Winds Quintet Emily Wilson, clarinet Kirsten Igo, flute Beth Davis, bassoon George Strickland, oboe David Maxted, horn

Programme to include music by Paul Patterson, Debussy, Bizet and more.

Formed in September 2014, this quintet quickly discovered a passion for performing in an outreach context, especially to children who had little exposure to classical music. This led to an exploration of music with narration, a unique genre for woodwind chamber music groups. North Winds will also be forming part of the Heswell concert series and taking a programme of music with narration to various literary festivals. The musicians from North Winds will be available for a meet and greet after the performance over coffee.

in Concert Folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span are touring a new live show with Maddy Prior leading a line–up featuring faces old and new. 2014 saw Steeleye Span embarking on an exciting new chapter. With the departure of fiddle player and long–standing member Peter Knight, who visited Buxton earlier this year with Gigspanner, the band introduced Jessie May Smart. Their new CD, The Essential Steeleye Span – Catch Up, was released at the end of last year and looks back on the band’s long and lasting career. They will perform some of their new gems alongside the classics that have made them one of the most successful British folk rock bands ever. ‘Don’t miss them...’ – Independent Tickets: £24.50 Discounts not available

Relaxed performance Seeing your first pantomime should be an exciting experience, but for children on the autistic spectrum and people with learning disabilities the shouts, bangs and flashes can be alarming. Additionally, many families with children who express themselves loudly, or get up and move around, find it difficult to attend formal theatre performances. With the support of the Mayor’s Charity, we are delighted to be able to hold a relaxed performance of Snow White at 5.30pm on Tuesday 13 December.

To make the performance more comfortable we will adapt the script, sound, lighting and length of the performance and provide a quiet space where children can relax and unwind if they need a few moments away from the action. There is also a visual story available to download from the website to help prepare for your trip to the theatre. Tickets for the Relaxed Performance are £10, with one essential companion being free of charge. For more information, visit the website or call the Box Office on: 01298 72190.

Emily Portman and the Coracle Band

The Houghton Weavers

Following 2014’s sold-out performance in Buxton, the legendary Queen guitarist Brian May and singing sensation Kerry Ellis return with a brand new show. This is a chance to see one of the world’s greatest guitar players alongside Britain’s ‘newest First Lady of song’ as they present a magical evening of world class music.

Emily Portman’s third album Coracle has been gathering momentum since its release in 2015, along with a wave of glowing reviews. It was named ‘Best Album of 2015’ by the Telegraph and has received airplay from the likes of Jarvis Cocker on Late Junction and with a BBC live session in store for Mark Radcliffe’s Folk Show.

They’ve been at the forefront of the music scene for over three decades and their visits to Buxton over the years have been particularly popular. Emerging from the North West’s folk clubs in the 1970s, the Weavers made their television debut on the BBC talent show We’ll Call You. Since then, audiences have fallen in love with their unique blend of comedy and music and the band remain true to their motto “keep folk smiling”.

Booking Terms & Conditions

INFO

TICKET PRICES AND FEES

Our Box Office sells tickets on behalf of companies that include visiting theatres, concerts, shows, artists and other venues. These clients decide the value of the tickets and the money collected from the sale of tickets is passed on accordingly. The advertised price of a ticket is the price that you pay; all ticket prices include any taxes, levies and booking fees. The cost of a ticket is made up of: • Deal Value: The face value of the ticket set by our clients

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

• Booking Fee: All tickets, except where we sell tickets for a third party, include a 7.5% Booking Fee. This fee goes towards the running cost of our ticketing system, ticket printing, staffing and all credit, debit, cheque, and cash handling costs. These fees help us to stay an effective business, which in turn helps us reinvest in our theatres and continually improve the service we provide • Restoration Levy: Buxton Opera House is an exquisitely beautiful Edwardian theatre and one of the country’s finest examples of Frank Matcham theatre design. To help maintain and operate both the Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre, the cost of tickets includes a restoration levy of £1 for tickets over £10 and 50p for tickets under £10. Tickets for some community events and other venues are exempt from the restoration levy.

ONLINE BOOKINGS

If you book online at www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk you can: • Login to your account and change your preferences • Become a Matcham Card member and have your discount automatically added to your basket • Choose your seat from our seating plan or be allocated the ‘best seat’ available at the time of booking • Print your tickets at home Not all tickets, concessions and special offers are available to book online. In some parts of the theatre there are seats with a restricted view of the stage and these are usually the last seats to be put on sale. Delivery Options: You are welcome to collect your tickets from the Box Office during normal opening hours, but if you prefer to have your tickets posted we charge a delivery fee of 80p which covers the ticket printing and postage cost. You can also print your tickets at home free of charge.

BOX OFFICE

The Box Office is usually open Monday to Saturday 10am to 8pm. When there is no performance the Box Office will close at 6pm. Sunday Box Office opening is generally 4pm to 8pm but this varies depending on performance times. The Box Office will be closed on a Sunday if there is no performance. Tickets for Pavilion Arts Centre can be bought at the Arts Centre Box Office one hour before the show or bought in advance from the main Box Office. Please note that we are only able to take cash for tickets bought on the Studio door. To speak to one of our friendly Box Office team call 01298 72190.

TICKET EXCHANGE

We cannot exchange tickets or money for a different event. Where there is more than one performance of an event we can exchange tickets where available. This requires a minium of 48 hours notice and there is £1.50 administration fee for exchanging tickets.

LOST TICKETS

We can reprint tickets on the night of the performance at a cost of £1.50. Proof of ID will be required.

REFUNDS

We are unable to refund the cost of the tickets unless a show is cancelled. Postage charges are non–refundable.

RESERVATIONS Reservations cannot be taken for events that are likely to sell out such as high profile music and comedy performances. Other reservations can be held for seven working days, but for very popular shows you will be asked to pay for your tickets in advance. If you book on the same day as the show, your tickets will be held until 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

CHANGES TO PROGRAMME

If a show is cancelled we will try to contact customers in advance. We publish any cancellation or unavoidable changes to performances on our website and social media. Please check before travelling. All information is correct at time of going to press.

ADMISSION

The management reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave our buildings at any time. Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable point in the performance at the discretion of the management.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS

Occasionally we may need to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre to the Studio (or vice versa). Numbered tickets may change to general admittance, in which case we are unable to offer refunds.

30/06/2016 14:20

59 MATCHAM

For more information about becoming a member, see page 56.

CHILDREN

We welcome children to the theatre and include a varied programme of children’s shows and events throughout the year. We have a small number of booster seats available on first come first served basis. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Groups should have one adult per 10 children. Children under three and babies less than 12 months are welcome at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price or ‘Babies Free’ is shown. The Studio Theatre seating is not suitable for children under three. For safety reasons the Upper Circle side seats and boxes in the Opera House are not suitable for families with children under 10 years old. For more information, please ask the Box Office for a copy of our family safety leaflet.

DANCING

Dancing is not permitted in the Dress Circle, Upper Circle or Gallery areas, so if you would like to dance, please book Stalls seats. For your safety, no standing is allowed in the Upper Circle sides and boxes.

SURTITILES

Surtitles may not be visible from some seats. Please check with the Box Office before booking.

RESTRICTED VIEW

A small number of seats in the Upper Circle have a restricted view of the stage. We want our customers to have the best experience possible, therefore, these seats are usually priced at a lower rate to reflect the restricted view. Family tickets are not available on restricted view seats.

REFRESHMENTS

We have three bars in the Opera House: the Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle bars which are open for pre–show and interval drinks 45 minutes before each performance. You can beat the queues by ordering interval drinks in advance. Unfortunately we are unable to take debit and credit cards.

SMOKING

Both Buxton Opera House and Pavilion Arts Centre are no smoking buildings and e–cigarettes are not permitted.

THEATRE TOURS & COFFEE MORNINGS

The Fundraising Friends of Buxton Opera House hold a coffee morning in the Dress Circle bar most Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon, they’d love to see you! They sometimes also offer tours of the theatre at a cost of £2.50 per person. Private group tours can also be arranged, please contact 01298 72050 for details. Please note that the theatre is over three levels and the tours involve several flights of stairs. For more infomation about our regular Back Stage Pass theatre tours, see page 5.

VOLUNTEER

Make new friends, learn new skills and contribute to the life of this wonderful theatre by becoming one of our volunteers. Volunteers help with selling programmes and refreshments and showing customers to their seats. A full induction and ongoing training is provided. For more information call: 01298 72050, email: foh@boh.org.uk or write to Buxton Opera House, 5 The Square, Buxton SK17 6AZ.

ACCESS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The level access entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. Unfortunately the building cannot be accessed by motorised scooters. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at ground floor level and an adapted toilet. We are happy to help you transfer from your wheelchair to the theatre seats. If you will be transferring from a wheelchair to theatre seating, even if you don’t need any help, please let us know when booking. The Stalls Bar is not accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

DISABLED CUSTOMERS AND COMPANIONS

Registered Disabled customers receive discounts to many performances. Personal Assistants or anyone in receipt of Carers’ Allowance are admitted free of charge (proof of eligibility may be requested). Companions outside these categories receive a 50% discount as long as discounts are available on that performance.

Although the Opera House foyer and Box Office counter are not accessible, there is wheelchair access to the Box Office side door in Water Street, where there is an intercom system. The Pavilion Arts Centre has good downstairs accessibility, however the layout of the seating can change for certain shows, please check when booking.

BOX OFFICE 01298 72190 BUXTONOPERAHOUSE.ORG.UK

For your safety, we advise that you bring a companion if you would have difficulty making your own way out of our buildings in an emergency. We have passive infra–red (PIR) systems in both venues for customers with hearing impairments. This works through a headset rather than your hearing aid, please reserve a headset through the Box Office when you book your tickets (£10 cash deposit required, limited availability). There is an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Assistance dogs are welcome.
