FALL 2021

PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S WELCOME Dear Alumni and Other Friends of the PA Program, It is an exciting time to be a PA at Butler right now! Since Fall 2020, we have been delivering almost all of our instruction face-to-face in Shelton Auditorium on Butler’s South Campus, and are looking forward to the Fall 2021 term where our instruction will be back home in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences building! The Class of 2022 is in the swing of their experiential rotations, and our newest cohort (Class of 2023) is well on their way to “getting their sea legs” in PA school. Other exciting news includes faculty member Jennifer Zorn transitioning to the role of DMS program director here at Butler. Our faculty, staff, and students have been hard at work this year to maintain our tradition of excellence despite the difficult circumstances. This has been a year of languishing and loss, of distance and disappointment. Through it all, PAs have risen to the challenge. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize, applaud, and thank each of for your work. Quality health care should never be taken for granted, and after a year like this, your contributions are valued more than ever. Last, I am passing the torch of Program Director to Elizabeth “Betsy” Schmidt, who has served as Assistant Program Director for the past 3 years. While I have enjoyed the work of Program Director in many ways, I have decided to focus on what I love most—teaching Butler PA Students! Professor Schmidt is a talented educator and a thoughtful leader, and I look forward to many great things from her and this program. I could not be more grateful for the ongoing support of you—our alumni, preceptors, advocates, faculty, staff, and friends of the program. The Butler University PA Programs have a bright future, and we couldn’t do it without you. Sincerely,

Christopher Roman, PA-C Program Director, Butler University PA Program

SPOTLIGHT

JENNIFER (ROYAL) BURKHART, PA-C Jennifer (Royal) Burkhart, PA-C, graduated from Butler’s MPAS Program in 2011 and was offered a position in an outpatient pediatric clinic in her hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Since graduation, she spent most of her time working in outpatient pediatrics and joined Parkview Physicians Group in 2016. Jenni never envisioned working in pediatrics but now could not imagine doing anything else. “Aside from sick visits, my focus is wellness checks. I really enjoy giving parents resources and the knowledge they need to be their best. I love interacting with the kids. You really never know what they are going to say!” One of the most rewarding aspects of her job has been to watch her patients grow through the years. “After doing this for 10 years, I am starting to see some of my first patients find me to become the provider for their own children!” When asked what made her add the role of clinical preceptor to her role of clinician, Jenni said, “Initially, it was to give back to the PA profession.

4

However, I have had so many Butler faculty and preceptors along the way that have been such an inspiration and that ultimately influenced me to become a preceptor. I am so grateful to both Professor Jennifer Zorn, my former academic advisor, and Professor Jennifer Snyder for their guidance. When I began my career, I worked alongside now BUPA Professor, Kali Veness, who was such a great mentor. So, being a Butler preceptor was my way to give back to the program as well.” Jennifer’s favorite part of being a preceptor is watching the students’ personal growth during the course of their rotation. “It is a neat experience to watch a student develop and grow with confidence. The staff in clinic have commented on how Butler PA students are always prepared and professional. As a preceptor, I feel invested in the students’ success and always love getting updates on how they are doing and where they are working after graduation.”

KEVIN BOGENSCHUTZ, MPAS, PA-C (CO’17)

awarded PA Program Clinical Instructor of the Year Voted on by the Class of 2021 cohort, here are remarks by a few of the students that he mentored: “Kevin is very good at teaching and elaborating on common conditions seen in primary care, but he also let me take the lead when focusing on a patient’s care. I felt like I was a practicing PA when he asked me about assessment and plan. He was very encouraging and helped me build my confidence as a future healthcare provider.” “Kevin never missed an opportunity to teach. If I knew the information, he would dig deeper and expand on my understanding. When I didn’t have the answer, he would kindly explain everything I needed to know.” “Kevin is always super understanding and supportive of students. He has an upbeat attitude each and every day! He makes students feel like peers and really pushes them to become independent thinkers and learners. I appreciate his willingness and trust in allowing me to see all of his patients.”  “Kevin is nothing short of incredibly kind in all of our interactions. He really does care about students.” Thank you, Kevin, for all that you do to support our students and our program!

EMILY WANDEL, MPAS, PA-C (CO ’O5)

awarded PA Program Preceptor of the Year Voted on by the Class of 2021 cohort, here are remarks by a few of the students that she mentored: “I cannot imagine anyone more deserving! She is thoughtful and deliberate in ensuring that all of her students receive an exceptionally supportive educational experience. She truly cares about your interests and education. She connects us with other specialties, surgeries, and experiences to provide exactly what we needed. As we all know, COVID put a strain on our program to find preceptors and Emily had the flexibility to step-up and accept students on short notice when other rotations fell through. She is smart, kind, and caring, and I can only hope to be as amazing as her in my own practice some day!” “Where do I begin? Emily Wandel absolutely deserves Outstanding Preceptor of the Year. Emily was my very first preceptor when Covid began. Professor Guthrie called her in a pinch the day before rotations were to begin and she agreed to have me. Aside from having a heart of gold, Emily treats her patients so well and is highly respected by all of the Cardiologists. She takes time out of her day to make sure students get to see all aspects of Cardiology and each week she discusses a topic in depth to help us prepare for the EOR exam. I think every student deserves the opportunity to have a very knowledgeable and kind preceptor like Emily to learn from during their clinical year.”

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR JENNIFER GUTHRIE, MPAS, PA-C, (CO’OO)

Director of Experiential Education, awarded PA Program Faculty of the Year.

Voted on by the Class of 2021 cohort, Professor Guthrie amassed an incredible front to combat the effects that the pandemic had on her student’s clinical year. Last May with some sites still shut down to student learners, she had to pivot, think outside the box, and work tirelessly to assure that her students got the hands-on experience they needed to graduate on time. Her ability to coordinate and maintain enough clinical rotations while bolstering the curriculum where needed, did not go unnoticed by the Butler PA students. “Professor Guthrie carried us through this extraordinary year with frankly ridiculous amounts of hard work and rapid plan changes. Thank you so much for keeping us all on track!” “Guthrie is a true MVP. I can’t begin to fathom how stressful, difficult, and exhausting it was to find clinical placements for all of us in the midst of a pandemic all while smiling and keeping a positive outlook. It’s like she has super powers. She has a great team supporting her, but her leadership is impeccable. Professor Guthrie is so humble and would never acknowledge how wonderful she’s been this past year, but I hope she knows how grateful we are for her hard work. We wouldn’t be graduating this May without her.” “If there was a person I’d trust with my life, it would be Professor Guthrie. She has handled such a challenging year with such grace. She has exhibited excellent communication skills, compassion for all students and perseverance as she excelled to make sure that our clinical education was nothing short of amazing even during a pandemic. I appreciate her more than she knows and I think if anyone has prepared me to be a successful PA, it would be Jenn Guthrie.”

Butler PA Program Faculty, Andy Chastain, has been involved with IAPA since 2018, when he returned to Indiana after living, practicing, and teaching in California. A native Hoosier, having grown up in nearby Martinsville, Andy and his wife, Jenny, spent four years in San Jose, California, while he was a faculty member with the Stanford University School of Medicine’s Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program. “I joined IAPA because I wanted a chance to take care of my profession in much the same way I take care of my patients. Because PAs are so often involved in busy clinical practices, we often forget to take care of the profession that allows us to make such an impact in the lives of our patients. I know I was guilty of this for the first few years as I tried to establish myself professionally,” Chastain commented. IAPA continuously advocates on behalf of its 1,900 plus licensed PAs to ensure that the best interests of physician assistants are represented. Andy’s first service to the IAPA Board was as Director-at-Large, then a short time later became its President-elect. Becoming President of the IAPA Board in January, Andy and other dedicated board members have been working on many projects. “The Academy has been busy engaging its membership in virtual town hall meetings to discuss current important topics affecting PA practice. We also recently provided an opportunity for PAs to earn 2 hours of continuing medical education (CME) credit on opioid education at our 2021 Spring Mini-CME event that was held virtually. This event provided the training required of each physician assistant by the State of Indiana’s Professional Licensing Agency, and was provided by Butler University Doctor of Medical Science candidate Katie Beaudoin,” President Chastain said. “I know there are many challenges facing PAs today, but I also know that IAPA is made up of members who are ready to face those challenges together. I’m proud to serve as this year’s President and look forward to making an impact during the final six months of my term,” he concluded.

Daniel Sturm, PA-C, MMS

The Society of Point of Care Ultrasound Board of Directors The Society of Point of Care Ultrasound (SPOCUS) recently appointed as Director at Large, Butler PA Program Faculty Daniel Sturm, PA-C, MMS. Professor Sturm joined Butler’s faculty in 2012, and his passion for ultrasound began to grow a few years ago when he was tasked with integrating ultrasound into the didactic curriculum to a greater extent than what was traditionally taught. He began by weaving point of care ultrasound into his Imaging course and established “Ultrasound Week,” during which time he held structured hands-on lung and eye ultrasound activities in the lab. This was only the beginning. Point of care ultrasound is now built-in to Butler’s H&P Lab and Clinical Procedures Lab, where Professor Sturm created a phantom model to practice ultrasound-guided vascular cannulation. This summer, he will further integrate ultrasound throughout his Imaging course by offering students optional ultrasound-related learning opportunities. In addition, over the last three years, Professor Sturm has led teams of interested students in an annual national competition called iSCAN. Butler’s first team of students participated live at the 2019 AAPA Conference, and the last two teams participated virtually. In 2020, he was tapped by SPOCUS to served as a judge for the iSCAN competition, and this year, he served on the competition’s planning committee. As a PA program, Butler is fortunate to have Professor Sturm, with this passion for point of care ultrasound, facilitate this flow of knowledge into the curriculum for the enrichment of our student’s education.

CHARLES GRAY

HIGHLIGHTS It is always exciting to hear from our PA alumni. We are pleased to highlight a few graduates of the Class of 2001. BETH (HARDING) BEASLEY, PA-C

KIM (SELLERS) GOLETZ, PA-C

I am currently living in upstate New York and working in urgent care. I have worked in family practice, emergency medicine, and trauma before that. I am happily married with two grown girls, four dogs, two cats, and a hamster. I’m also currently working toward my Doctor in Medical Science (DMS) degree thru Butler University.

After graduating, I began my career in Emergency Medicine, working in emergency departments in Indianapolis, IN and Cleveland, OH. Upon returning to Indianapolis, I transitioned to orthopedic surgery and for the last 15 years, I have enjoyed performing hip and knee surgery at OrthoIndy. I am a Butler University preceptor for PA students and involved with Women for Riley. My husband (also a Butler grad) and I have been married for 18 years, we have two children, and we love traveling as a family.

ANN (MULLEN) BIDDLE, PA-C, MPAS Since graduating from Butler in 2001, I have worked in Family Medicine with the same group of physicians in Noblesville, Indiana. It has been very rewarding to see how the knowledge of and the respect for the PA profession has grown. I obtained my master’s degree remotely from the Arizona School of Health Sciences, graduating in 2003. I have been married to my husband, Adam, for 20 years. We keep very busy outside of work with our 3 kids, ages 15, 14, and 9. 12

I have always had a passion for health and fitness and feel strongly about preventative medicine. This led me to become a certified nutritionist and a personal trainer, and in 2017 I founded Refine YOU, an online fitness and nutrition company. I created The Refine YOU Program, a proprietary 7-week online program that provides clients with a customized nutrition plan and workouts to help them reach their health and fitness goals and maintain healthy lifestyles.

After graduation, I moved back east to Delaware and began my career in general and specialty surgery as a 1st assist in GI, General, Neuro, Ortho, Plastics, and more. My career then moved west to St. Louis, where I started a family and worked in a large orthopedic practice. Next, I moved to my current location in Colorado, where I practiced Emergency Medicine in civilian urgent care and in a military hospitalbased setting at Fort Carson, where I lived the dream of acute care. In transitions between moves, I also found time to work in the fields of Geriatric Medicine, Workman’s Comp, and in a school system Wellness Center. After these many diverse roles, plus a lot of nights, weekends, and holidays in the ED, I found myself drawn to Primary Care and found an excellent position at an FQHC where all of my experience could be put to use providing care to economically or medically vulnerable patients. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time living the adventure in Colorado with my wife and 2 teenage children.

CARRIE KLINGMAN, PA-C I’ve practiced Emergency Medicine at St. Francis (Indianapolis) since December 2001, and our group has grown from 6 PAs to 17 full and parttime PAs. I love the unpredictability of working in the ER, as crazy as that may sound. My daughter Katie, born during my clinical

year of PA school, is now 20 and attending DePaul University. My second daughter, Emma, will be a high school senior this fall. I also have three furbabies, so when the kids are off to college, the house still won’t be calm or quiet, thankfully. When I’m not working in the ER, I keep my sanity by riding bikes or working my second job as a fitness instructor teaching Yoga, Pilates, and Kickboxing in Plainfield, Indiana, where I live. I also love traveling with my friends and family and seeing live music, particularly my favorite band, Pearl Jam. Pre-Covid, we had tickets to see them in Nashville, St. Louis, Amsterdam, Budapest, and Prague, so 2022 will be a year to rock out at the rescheduled concerts!

ANNE (MCFARLAND) SULLIVAN, PA-C I wanted to take this moment to say how incredibly grateful that I am for the opportunity to become a Physician Assistant and to attend Butler University 20 years ago. After graduating from Butler, the subsequent events of my life have been more than I could have ever imagined yet better than I could have hoped for. In the last 20 years, I have had the privilege of working as a physician assistant in the following specialties and locations: CV Surgery in Texas and Florida, Family Practice in Texas, Orthopedic Surgery in Honduras, Liberia Africa, and Florida, Hospitalist in St. Croix US Virgin Islands and Colorado, Endocrine Surgery in Colorado, General Surgery in Guatemala and Neurosurgery in Florida. I’ve also had the opportunity to live and work with mission organizations such as Hands International in Kenya, Mercy Ships in Liberia, and U-Turn For Christ in Thailand. I currently reside near Daytona Beach, Florida with my loving husband. For all of this and more, I am incredibly grateful to God! Ephesians 3:14-20

Near West Free Clinic

“Bye Bye Rona”

The Near West Free Clinic (NWFC), located within the Living Faith Church, 2120 W. Washington St, Indianapolis, provides a range of free medical services to anyone in need every Saturday from 10 am -2 pm. The clinic started 5 years ago when a group of Marian University medical students worked with Dr. James Pike to identify an area in high need of primary care services. The near west side of Indianapolis was an area that not only could use improved access to healthcare but also housed a large proportion of underserved Pictured above: Austin Carrier (CO21’), individuals that were very receptive to a new medical center. The James Pike, D.O. of Pike Medical and Khusbu Shah (MPAS-2) clinic is operated by Marian medical students and Butler PA and pharmacy students. Dr. Pike and Kevin Bogenschutz, PA-C organize volunteer providers, both physicians and PAs alike, that staff the clinic every weekend. While creating an interprofessional educational environment for Indianapolis healthcare professional students, the clinic follows an academic clinical model. Students work together with their peers to complete the visit, and then staff the case with the attending for a group discussion. The clinic is looking for volunteers: Attending Medical Providers (physicians or physician assistants), pharmacists, PA students, medical students, pre-med/pre-PA, social worker students, pharmacy students, and Spanish interpreters. For information on the NWFC and these volunteer opportunities go to: https://www.nearwestoutreachclinic.com/ or email: kbogensc@butler.edu

Niti (Shah) Amin CO13 and her sister Dhara have always wanted to write a children’s book, but the subject matter had yet to reveal itself until the pandemic hit. Niti’s daughter, who was two at the time, kept asking, “Why can’t we go here? Why can’t we do this?” Her daughter’s school had closed down until June; she was asked to wear a mask and told to wash her hands. It became clear to Niti, through reinforcing the what and the whys of COVID-19 to her daughter, that a children’s book might help. “Bye Bye Rona” is based on a simple concept of phrases her daughter was saying. It started with Mommy washes her hands, Daddy washes his hands, and Nila washes her hands. The book is geared toward children ages 2 to 6, but the message is relevant to everyone. It teaches kids how to stay safe during the pandemic by doing three simple things: washing their hands, wearing a mask, and keeping their distance from others. “It was a nice outlet during the pandemic but proved challenging as I was pregnant at the time and busy with my daughter in addition to being new to adobe software. While I tackled that, my sister took on the logistics of publishing and my sister-in-law, who lives in England, did the illustrations, her first book as well.” Niti and her sister would like to write another children’s book, but in the meantime, they have enjoyed reading this one to their daughters, who will be three years and two years old in June. “Bye Bye Rona” was self-published by the trio through Amazon in July 2020, can be purchased online through Amazon, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble.
