A MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT

Congratulations on your graduation from Butler University!

On behalf of the Butler University community, I would like to congratulate each one of our accomplished graduates. I commend you for the hard work, dedication, and perseverance that have brought you here today. We are proud of you, and we are grateful to have had you as members of our campus community. All of you—through your unique talents and strengths—have made Butler a better place.

I would like to recognize the parents and family members of our graduates. Your guidance and support have made all the difference for today’s diploma recipients. They have earned this honor, in large part, because of you. We share in your joy as you celebrate this milestone in their lives.

I also want to thank our talented faculty and staff members. Because of your dedication, our graduates are now ready to embrace the exciting opportunities and challenges ahead. They have received an exceptional education in a vibrant learning environment, and they are prepared to become future mentors, critical thinkers, and agents for change.

Graduates, “The Butler Way”—or that special manner in which we all pursue excellence in our own areas of talent for the greater good of our communities and society—is now a part of who you are. As new alumni, you personify the Butler spirit of achievement, and it speaks volumes about the outstanding people you are and the great things you will do.

The Butler family will always welcome you back home, and we hope you will visit us often.

ANTHEM

The Road Home

by

by

Tell me, where is the road I can call my own, That I left, that I lost, So long ago?

All these years I have wandered, Oh, when will I know There’s a way, there’s a road That will lead me home?

After wind, after rain, When dark is done. As I wake from a dream In the gold of day, Through the air there’s a calling From far away, There’s a voice I can hear That will lead me home. Rise up, follow me, Come away, is the call, With the love in your heart As the only song; There is no such beauty As where you belong; Rise up, follow me, I will lead you home.

ALMA MATER

In the gallery of memories There are pictures bright and fair, And I find that dear old Butler Is the brightest one that’s there. Alma Mater, how we love thee, With a love that ne’er shall fade.

And we feel we owe a debt to thee That never can be paid.

CONGRATS EVAN, SHERRY, & RACHEL

COMMENCEMENT SYMBOLS

THE MACE

The mace symbolizes the University’s governing authority and is present only when the President and members of the board of trustees are in attendance at academic ceremonies, signifying that the proceedings have official sanction. The hand-carved mace incorporates the features of the Butler seal in a symbolic creation that captures the strength and character of Butler University. Carved from Indiana walnut, the mace includes the torch, which symbolizes light and learning; the name of the University; its location; year of founding; and a ring of figures representing each college. The chief faculty marshal uses the mace to open and close academic ceremonies.

GONFALONS

The Butler University gonfalons are modeled on processional banners that originated in the medieval states of Italy. Butler’s six gonfalons represent the schools that comprise Butler University: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Education, Lacy School of Business, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Jordan College of the Arts, and College of Communication.

THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN of OFFICE

The chain of office symbolizes the authority vested in the president by the Board of Trustees. In 1962 the Alumni Association gifted the original chain of office to the University. In December 2012, a new chain was commissioned as a gift to the University by Trustee Gary D. Butkus ’88 and College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences faculty member Jason T. Range JD PhD. The silver chain contains the same college symbols as the mace and bears the names of the distinguished persons who have served as presidents of Butler University. Suspended from the chain is the University seal encased in laurel, symbolizing the triumph of learning.

ACADEMIC SYMBOLISM

The use of caps, gowns, and hoods in commencement ceremonies has been continuous since colonial times. The custom descends from the Middle Ages, when education was a function of religious organizations. Today’s academic garb resembles medieval clothing worn by the clergy. Caps were a necessity in cold churches; capes with attached hoods were also needed for warmth.

The color, trimming, and lining of the hoods worn in commencement ceremonies indicate the school from which a degree was granted. Generally, hoods increase in size from the bachelor’s hood to the doctoral’s.

At Butler, the color of the tassel on a graduate’s cap indicates the discipline studied. The color code is as follows:

Black: Associate Degree Candidates from any discipline

Brown: Art + Design, Arts Administration, Creative Writing, Dance, Dance Arts Administration, Dance Pedagogy, Dance Performance, Theatre

Citron: Anthropology, Anthropology and Psychology, Criminology, Criminology and Psychology, Sociology, Sociology and Criminology, Sociology and Psychology

Copper: Economics

Dark blue: Peace and Conflict Studies, Philosophy, Philosophy and Psychology, Philosophy and Religion, Political Science, Political Science and Psychology

Drab: Accounting, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, International Business, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Risk Management and Insurance

The regalia worn by the Butler Board of Trustees at the University Commencement Ceremony and College Celebrations was made by a generous donation by Gary Butkus ’88, a member of the board, debuted for the first time at the 2023 Commencement weekend. We are exceedingly grateful for Gary’s continued support, which will serve to enrich Butler’s signature celebration of academic achievement.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

In selecting honorary degree recipients, Butler University strives to celebrate individuals whose life and work reflect the University’s core values and who have made tremendous accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, creativity, and public service, therefore significantly benefiting or enriching a particular group or enhancing our larger society.

Clarence Crain

Butler University is proud to honor Clarence Crain, a distinguished member of the Class of 1973, as a recipient of an honorary degree at this year’s Commencement ceremony. Crain’s profound impact on Butler University, the Indianapolis community, and the broader landscape of higher education in Indiana epitomizes the founding values of our institution.

The youngest of seven children, Crain grew up just miles from campus. He went on to attend Shortridge High School and was a standout on the basketball team coached by another Butler legend, George Theofanis. Crain was also named to the All-Star Indiana High School Basketball Team. Coach Theofanis was instrumental in convincing Crain to attend Butler—and the rest is history. From his early days on campus, Crain exemplified leadership and excellence. As a Business Administration major, he was not only a standout in the classroom but also on the basketball court, where his skills as a guard earned him the title of Most Valuable Player and the Hilton U. Brown Mental Attitude Award for leadership and mental tenacity in 1973. These early accomplishments foreshadowed a lifetime of service and achievement.

Following his graduation in 1973, Crain went on to a successful career at General Motors that spanned three decades—while also working as an Indiana high school and small college basketball official. After his tenure at General Motors Corporation, Crain shifted his focus to the community sector, joining Lilly Endowment Inc. as Program Director in the Education and Youth Programs Division. There, his work benefited all 38 institutions of higher education in Indiana, along with key community organizations serving African American youth. His leadership extended to national projects, including significant contributions to the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of African American History and Culture.

As an alumnus, Crain’s commitment to Butler University has been unwavering. His contributions as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees, including a tenure as Trustee Emeritus since 2010, and his involvement in the establishment and advisory of the Black Alumni Association, among other roles, have been instrumental in shaping the University’s legacy and future. His recognition with the Butler Medal in 2008 and the Ovid Butler Society Mortar Award (along with his wife Fabiola) in 2014 are testaments to his deep and lasting impact. It should also be noted that Crain was initiated into the Butler Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004—and in March 2024, was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Crain’s civic involvement is extensive, having served in leadership roles with 100 Black Men of America’s Indianapolis chapter, the Indianapolis Public School Hall of Fame Committee, and various other organizations focused on education, community service, and public health. His awards and honors, including the GM Award for Community Excellence and the Business Accomplishment Award from the Center for Leadership Development, reflect his broad influence and commitment to making a difference.

Clarence Crain’s biography is not merely a list of accomplishments; it is a story of a man who has dedicated his life to uplifting others through education, service, and philanthropy. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of his graduation, Butler University recognizes Clarence Crain not only for what he has achieved but for the countless lives he has touched and inspired along the way. His life’s work stands as a testament to Butler’s ideals and his unwavering commitment to improving the world around him.

FACULTY SPEAKER

Scott Bridge

Scott Bridge has been associated with Butler University for parts of six decades. As an undergrad Bulldog, Bridge was a Radio/TV major and a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated in 1982 and began a broadcast journalism career which took him to radio stations in Terre Haute, Lafayette, and Indianapolis as a news reporter and anchor. He also served as a part-time TV sports anchor for WTTV, Channel Four.

Bridge returned to Butler in the spring semester of 1988 to be the News and Sports Director for Butler’s radio station, WAJC, and to teach broadcast journalism classes. He was elected President of the Indiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association in 1995 and was named Outstanding Faculty Member in the Jordan College of Fine Arts by the Mortar Board student honorary. He left Butler to stay home fulltime with his children while his wife established her medical practice in Columbus, Indiana but he stayed close to the University by serving on the Butler Alumni Association Board of Directors.

After a chance meeting with a former student who asked Bridge when he was coming back to teach at Butler, he returned to Butler in 2006 and has been a faculty member teaching electronic journalism classes ever since. He added the duties of Internship Director of the College of Communication in 2014 and he was eventually promoted to Senior Lecturer. He was given the Faculty Award of Excellence by the Butler University Parent Council in 2018, achieved Special Recognition of Faculty Excellence by the Provost in 2020, and was given the Leadership Impact Award by the Butler University Family Council in 2024.

Bridge’s former students work for media outlets like CNN, MSNBC, ESPN, and Fox Sports, TV newsrooms in Washington, DC, Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis, and include three members of Butler’s Board of Trustees.

He and his wife, Maryann, will celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary in June.

They have two children and a granddaughter. Bridge will retire May 31 and is looking forward to spending more time with his wife as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

This long-standing tradition represents the Butler community’s fond farewell, and the return of graduates to their families and to the larger communities in which they are now more prepared to work and live.

FACULTY COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Susan McGuire

Susan McGuire was a Soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company from 1973 to 1976, a Principal Dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company from 1977 to 1988, and Rehearsal Director of the Company in spring 1989. In autumn 1989, and again in 1990, she held the Sage Cowles Land Grant Chair in Dance at the University of Minnesota. From 1991 to 1998 she was Artistic Director of London Contemporary Dance School. In spring 2000, she taught at and directed the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance as well as serving as a Rehearsal Director for the Company. In fall 2000, she was appointed the Director of Taylor 2 and the Paul Taylor School. McGuire joined the dance faculty of the Jordan College of the Arts (JCA) in 2004.

McGuire has taught technique and repertory at the American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, the University of Illinois, the Juilliard School, and the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.

McGuire has restaged Paul Taylor’s work for American Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Rambert Dance Company in London, the Gulbenkian Ballet in Lisbon, Taylor 2, and many universities throughout the United States, including the University of Illinois, the University of Washington, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and Butler Ballet and Butler Chamber dance at JCA.

McGuire’s teaching responsibilities at JCA have included all levels of modern dance technique, pedagogy, choreography, and the PCA course African Roots of Latin Dance. She has choreographed for every production of Butler Ballet and has reconstructed three Paul Taylor masterworks, Cloven Kingdom, Le Sacre du Printemps, and Piazzolla Caldera for Butler Ballet. McGuire has received two Faculty Research Grants from the University, one to research and observe choreographer Merce Cunningham’s creative process, and one to write a non-fiction book proposal. The latter has resulted in a memoir which will be submitted for publication in fall 2024. McGuire sits on the Choreographic Governance Committee of the Paul Taylor Foundation and continues to teach at the Paul Taylor School and to reconstruct Paul Taylor’s work.

FACULTY COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Chad Miller has been a Lecturer in the BTA Department (Technology) in the Lacy School of Business (LSB) for the last two years. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Integrated Science from Northwestern University, he embarked on a 30-plus-year IT career which included working at Eli Lilly and Company, two consulting roles, working and leading in Butler’s own IT department, and a role as a local insurance company’s Chief Information Officer. After this mainly Indianapolis-based career, Miller decided to switch gears, earning a master’s degree in Educational Psychology and teaching back at Butler in his current role. He also enjoys being one of the Career Mentors in LSB working with the wonderful Career Office staff.

FACULTY COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Susan Adamson

Susan Adamson is an Associate Professor in the College of Education teaching methods courses in culturally responsive early childhood reading and writing. A few accomplishments she is most proud of include serving as Director of the Partnership for Inquiry Learning for 22 years, where she was able to provide professional development for teachers of children toddler–grade 8 alongside extraordinary language, literacy, and mathematics scholars and collaborating with Early Learning Indiana to create the Early Childhood Educator Certificate at Butler University.

A transplant from Boston, MA, Adamson is a product of the civil rights movement, feminism, and peaceful protests. She worked for three years in a pre-vocational school where she taught small-engine repair, letterpress printing, drafting, and bicycle repair before taking a hiatus to perform with a number of modern dance companies in Boston. She returned to teaching in 1989, completing her doctorate at Indiana University in Bloomington following the birth of her second child.

Adamson is married to an architect and beekeeper who keeps their house in a state of perpetual change and beauty. They have two adult sons who are both in loving relationships, and so far, live within driving distance of their home.

FACULTY COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Corey Reed

Dr. Corey Reed is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College, double majoring in English and Philosophy; his Master of Arts from the University of Louisville in Comparative Humanities; and his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Memphis. He is an Affiliate Faculty Member in the Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (RGSS) program, and is newly affiliated with the Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS) program. He now serves as one of three new Co-directors of the Hub for Black Affairs and Community Engagement. His courses also contribute significantly to the Black and African Studies minor.

Reed specializes in critical philosophy of race and Africana philosophy, with academic journal articles and book chapters on Black aesthetics, Black existentialism and phenomenology, and Black issues regarding ethics, education, and gender. His work focuses largely on 20th century French-Continental philosophy and Black existentialism’s evolution from this era. He is also a proud husband, father, activist, minister, group exercise instructor, and educator.

You may notice a welcome change to the regalia worn by the Butler Board of Trustees at this year’s University Commencement Ceremony and College Celebrations. Gary Butkus ’88, a member of the board, made a generous donation to purchase new regalia, debuted for the first time at the 2023 Commencement weekend. We are exceedingly grateful for Gary’s continued support, which will serve to enrich Butler’s signature celebration of academic achievement.
