The law is becoming more global. Your studies should, too. In today’s interconnected world, issues transcend borders. We’re constantly reminded how society’s greatest challenges are part of a complex, worldwide tapestry. The better you can handle international issues and multiple legal systems, the more you’ll be in demand. That’s true in any field—business, government, public interest, education— whether you intend to work inside of law or out, in the United States or abroad. And one of the best ways to acquire international expertise and skills is to study abroad through Boston University School of Law’s programs.

Choose from leading law schools in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and South America. Gain firsthand exposure to the global dimensions of law. And empower your career as a twentyfirst-century legal professional and global citizen. We offer 17 different opportunities—14 single-semester and 3 full-year. Each is unique, but they all lead to a similar outcome: students return convinced that foreign study was one of the most rewarding, eye-opening, and transformative experiences of their legal education. I’m confident you will, too. Welcome to the world of

FULL-YEAR INTERNATIONAL DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMS

National University of Singapore (NUS) Republic of Singapore Students with strong professional and personal interests in Asian law and culture can pursue advanced studies in the legal systems, institutions, and legal traditions of South, Southeast, and East Asia at Asia’s “Global Law School.” NUS’s LL.M. in Asian Legal Studies Program provides comprehensive knowledge of Asia’s legal regimes and enables students to focus on particular areas of law—such as commercial, constitutional, and international law—from a pan-Asian perspective. Considered a “microcosm of Asia,” Singapore is the ideal venue in which to acquire essential insight into this dynamic region of the world.

• BU Law’s programs are open to second- and third-year J.D. students who have completed at least one year of residency at BU Law. Students apply during the Spring Semester for programs in the upcoming academic year. • While all programs have limited enrollments, our expansive portfolio meets student demand: in 2013, all qualified applicants received at least one offer to take part in a program to which they applied. • Single-semester programs grant a maximum of 12 credits toward the J.D. degree. Full-year programs grant 26 credits (24 credits for two semesters of full-time coursework, plus a 2-credit independent paper supervised by a BU Law professor). • Third-year students who participate in a fullyear program must complete their upperclass writing, professional responsibility, and practical skills requirements during their second year. • Participants pay BU Law’s regular tuition.

“During my yearlong program in Madrid, I was immersed in about 30 subjects spanning international law and business. One of my favorite experiences was a corporate clinic where we created our own social responsibility program and presented it to a real law firm. The practical, hands-on experience was indispensable to my education and helped me obtain my current position at a translating company in Spain despite having no translating experience. My boss told me legal translation could be learned, but my understanding of the legal system was invaluable to the organization.” —Maria Tartaglia, J.D.’14 and LL.M.’14, Universidad Pontificia Comillas

It could be, if you answer “yes” to one or more of these questions. Do you want to: • Gain in-depth appreciation of the laws of a specific country or region, or the international aspects of specific areas of law, such as intellectual property, environmental law, human rights, or commercial law? • Connect to the law in a global context— and obtain an important perspective on the law no matter where your career takes you?

Is Studying Abroad for You?

• Make personal and professional connections that can lead to opportunities with foreign or American firms or international organizations? • Build intercultural legal skills and cross-cultural competencies that are increasingly in demand in today’s global workforce?

• Learn how lawyers trained in other systems handle client matters? • Demonstrate to prospective employers your seriousness of purpose for international work? Foreign study has strong allure and potential benefits, but keep in mind that adjusting to different cultures and new academic environments presents unique challenges. Time abroad also means less time at BU Law. To help students understand the demands—and weigh the tradeoffs—of a term or year abroad, we strongly encourage you to discuss your interests, expectations, and potential plans with advisors in BU Law’s Career Development & Public Service Office and the Graduate & International Programs Office.

Did You Know? • Unlike the United States, where the J.D. is awarded as a professional, post-undergraduate degree, most other countries confer a first degree in law at the undergraduate level. Going to law school is like going to college and majoring in law. • The “Socratic method” generally is not used overseas. While pedagogical approaches and traditions differ by country and school, you are more likely to encounter traditional lectures inside a foreign classroom. • Most legal systems throughout the world follow a code-based “civil law” tradition, as compared to the “common law” tradition of the United States, where a main source of law derives from judicial opinions. • It is estimated that more than half of US practitioners require knowledge of foreign and international law to represent their clients on a regular basis.* * Ferguson, Adelaide. “Mapping Study Abroad in U.S. Law Schools.” NAFSA: Association of International Educators, May 2010.
