Winter Weekend

Feb. 12-14 2016 events in the Berkshire region and Southern Vermont Family, nightlife and 10x10 Festival

Keep warm ... and prosper

At the height of winter and cabin fever, this weekend rolls around to give us ways to get out. The temperature is dropping, and since New Years we have holed up with warm socks and hot soup. But this weekend, with friends, with a partner, or with two feet and a need to move, we have a chance to get out of the house. The 10x10 festival in Pittsfield brings bonfires, oil paintings, live comedy and 1940s jazz. And across the mountainsthe nights are night full of music — Grammy winners Angelique Kidjo at Mass MoCA and Ladysmith Black Mambazo at the Troy Music Hall — or dance to live rhythms with Kusika and the Zambezi Marimba Band. Page 2

You might read roll up your sleeves in the studios at IS183 or read "Much Ado about Nothing" aloud at Get Lit, or share a scone at the Prairie Whale. You might snowshoe around Notchview. You might sit by the fire in the lobby of the Red Lion Inn and have a quiet talk with Simon, the black and white inn cat. You might split a cup of Chocolate Springs hot chocolate with a friend or

sample the hot chocolate bar at Rubiner’s or start a search for the Berkshires' best brownie. (If you do, please tell me what you find.) If you want to celebrate Valentine's Day — you singular or plural — the question isn't what you do. It's how. One of the best Valentine's Days I've ever had happened at a snack bar. A former partner and I had ice cream sundaes in paper bowls, btwberkshires.com

and we laughed like loons, and it wouldn't have mattered if we'd been in a basement or a field or a wooden whaling ship, because the whole point and the only point was that we were taking some time to be in the same place. And it was still endlessly astonishing to both of us that we had someone to be in the same place with. btwberkshires.com

You don't have to have a partner or a hot fudge sundae to laugh like that. I once had as good a time walking two miles in the snow to the nearest grocery store to buy peach-colored carnations so I could leave them anonymously at my friends' doorways. It was a cold and clear afternoon, and my blood was up and the sunset was

carnation-colored. And that day was a holiday. Today can be another. Holiday, holy day, comes from two Old English words: holy from halig — sound, happy, whole — and day from daeg, sunrise to sunset, with the root dhegw, to burn. So Holidays are a time to feel whole, hale and warm. I’ll dance to that. — Kate Abbott
