Editor’s note This is an unusual holiday season. For some of us, looking out at a divided country, it is difficult to know how to face the end of this year and the beginning of the next. This magazine shapes itself around the calendar, and I have been gathering events through early February. I hope they may give warmth when we need it. And this year, as I look for lighted tractor parades and winter markets and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa celebrations, I am more than usually aware of the deeper notes in them. Here in these hills, the holidays come in with jazz saxophone and Unsilent Nights. Potters are wedging clay, and actors are practicing Dylan Thomas. Farmers are scrubbing earth from the roots in the barn cellars and milking cows on mornings cold enough to snow. Our holidays have a feeling of reality about them. It’s there in the stories too, when you look. These holidays tell us about family and birth and life renewing, even in danger. In this part of the world, they come at the darkest and coldest time of year, and when we hear stories about light going on in darkness, they seem to fit naturally with the candles we light on these long nights. Maybe that’s why holidays keep going in hard times. Soldiers have celebrated Christmas in the trenches. Jewish families have celPage

ebrated Hanukkah and Passover in hiding from the Nazis. People enslaved on Southern plantations before the Civil War created their own holiday music. Holidays bring out stories of home and caring for the people and the places that keep us going. As we come to Thanksgiving and Solstice and Kwanzaa, Christmas and Hanukkah as they come together in the same week this year, and New Year, may the holidays we celebrate bring us close to the hills where we live and to all of us who live here together. — Kate Abbott

‘Othering’ Berkshire Art Association

The unwelcome experience of being treated differently has a name, ‘Othering,’ and it is also the name of the Berkshire Art Association’s biennial juried show at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts, through Nov. 26. The BAA looked for perspectives reflecting experiences of exclusion and separation, dealing in themes of race, health, religion, class, gender, sexuality, age, (dis)ability and neurodivergence. More than 30 artists from throughout the Northeast were juried into the show, more than a dozen of them local. They range from a twenty-year veteran of the U.S. military who served two tours in Iraq to an AfricanAmerican Pittsfield High School graduate now studying art at Williams. Holiday baking Hitting the sweet spot

Almond pastries from Bakkerij Krinjen. Photo by Kate Abbott

At the A-Frame Bakery in Williamstown, Sharon Sutter is preparing Thanksgiving pies — apple, pumpkin, cranberry and blueberry, pecan, maple apple mincemeat ... and tarts, pumpkin rolls, and maple-glazed cheesecake. Later she will make Hanukkah treats, often for families wanting to send a holiday memory to students away from home. Christmas brings cakes, she said — Yule Logs (Bûches de Noel) filled and frosted with chocolate and decorated meringue mushrooms, and Red Velvet, and tortes. People also come in for baked goods for breakfast: crumb cakes, scones, muffins and quick breads. From Cakewalk in Lee to Tunnel Page

City Café in Williamstown and Crazy Russian Girls in Bennington, local bakers and pastry chefs are rolling up their sleeves. At Bakkerij Krijnen, Hans and Jennifer Krijnen have brought Dutch flavors to Route 9 in Bennington for more than six years. Hans’ father and grandfather were bakers in the Netherlands, in the small town of Terheijden, Jennifer said. Like them, he makes everything from scratch, and always with butter. Linzer tortes and shortbread cookies fill the bakery case, and pastries filled with almond paste or apples. They make their own croissants (with 27 layers of pastry dough) and puff pastry (1140 layers).

They have a sheeter to roll out the dough, she said, and the butter is incorporated by hand. At Christmas, they also make kerststollen, a rich fruited bread with almond paste in the center. Hans plans to bring these back in the first week in December. And in cold weather they enjoy stroopwaffels, crisp wafers with caramel centers. Traditionally in the Netherlands, people will set one on top of a hot cup of tea and let the steam soften it. Hans makes his own version with ginger, a variation he has seen nowhere else. “They’re a favorite,” Jennifer said. “We love to make s’mores with them.” — Kate Abbott btwberkshires.com

New holiday tales

A goat leaps at the top of a fir tree. A girl holds the tiny tree hung with hand-carved wooden creatures, and she is carrying a menorah. She is walking through falling snow with a scarf around her head to keep out the cold. Among the holiday stories at the Bennington Bookshop, “The Trees of the Dancing Goats” by Patricia Polacco stands out from its cover. Polacco tells and illustrates the story of a winter in her childhood. In Michigan farm country, she is getting ready for Hanukkah with her mother,

a teacher, and her grandparents, who have come from Soviet Georgia. When scarlet fever sweeps through town and her friends fall ill, her family finds ways to help and keep the holiday alive. Along with the well-loved holiday tales that revive every year, some beautiful and less well-known ones may feel timely. On the same Bennington shelf, “The Seven Spools of Thread” by Angela Shelf Medearis tells a Kwanzaa story of seven brothers who put aside their quarrels to

save themselves and help their village. Matt Tannenbaum at the Bookstore in Lenox recalled stories he used to read to his daughters when they were young. “The Christmas Story Book,” a Rudolf Steiner book from Floris Press, gathers an anthology of stories in beats, like a play, he said. They explore times and people in the Biblical Christmas story, from the Shepherds to the three wise men, in stories by Leonid Andreiev, Jane Clement, Maxim Gorki, Gerhard Klein, Selma Lagerlöf, Jeanna Oterdahl, Peter Rosegger, Ruth Sawyer,

An old favorite Charles Dickens’ classic story of a slum lord who re-learns human courage will return this season in many forms, from the annual community romp at the Berkshire Theatre Group’s Colonial Theatre to nearly word-for-word versions at Oldcastle and Walking the Dog Theater and a comic pantomine, ‘Turn of the Scrooge,’ at the Ghent Playhouse.

The Mount will host a panel with Matt Tannenbaum and New Yorker cartoonist Bob Eckstein. By David Dashiell

Edzard Schaper, Jakob Streit, and Henry Van Dyke. And in “The Power of Light,” Isaac Bachevis Singer tells eight stories for Hanukkah. Tannenbaum remembered his favorite, a tale about a child with a parakeet. As the family is cleaning the house for the holiday, the parakeet flies out an open window. The family search for it and find nothing, until years later the child visits a girl nearby at Hanukkah, and she has the parakeet — it had flown in her window. It’s a gentle story, and telling it moves him.

Turning back toward the front of the store, he picked up a collection of essays by E.B. White and opened it to “What Do Out Hearts Treasure.” “It’s the first Christmas they spent out of New England,” he said. For their health, White and his wife, the New Yorker writer and fiction editor Katharine White, had left Maine for a shocking pink cinderblock house on Florida Bayou. But White would find his wife looking sad. Tannenbaum read quietly. ”‘It’s Vietnam that is making me feel this way,’ she

said. ‘But I did not believe it was Vietnam. I knew her well enough, in her December phase, to know that something far deeper than Southeast Asia was at work.’” Trying to make a holiday from three tiny palm trees, a chameleon and a poinsettia like the ones blooming wild in the neighbor’s garden, they are floundering, until a box arrives from the north. Their son has sent a branch of balsam fir, a tiny red drum and drumsticks made by his children, and family photographs. The room smells of pine sap, and they feel the holiday stirring. — Kate Abbott

Winter green By Thom Smith

Special to BTW Berkshires

The woods are quiet. An overnight snow covers the fallen leaves and highlights the occasional green. This is a favorite time of mine to wander the Berkshire woods with the evergreens to cheer me along before the snow piles too deeply. The killing frosts have put to rest most of the forest greenery, except for the resilient plants that keep colorful leaves throughout the year. In moister woods, some ground vegetation is still vigorous and ignores the freeze. Christmas, polypody and evergreen wood ferns, shining club moss, princess pine and the diminutive creeping vines we call partridgeberry and checkerberry resist winter’s advance. At higher altitudes, mountain laurel often forms thickets of shiny green leaves. American yew, also called ground hemlock, is another low-growing evergreen that caught my attention during a Page 62

recent walk. Many of these evergreen plants grow beneath open stands of pine, hemlock and spruce trees, the commonest sources for one of the more popular traditions at this season – the Christmas Tree. Another tradition for many at this season is to decorate with wreaths and garlands made of different evergreens — as long as we give thought to the future. Club moss, a small upright growing woodland plant, has no flower but retains its cheerful green through the winter months. It grows so slowly it should only be harBTW Holiday 2016

vested prudently, if at all; it was once harvested to excess for wreathmaking. A few pieces of partridge berry and some moss for a berry bowl do little harm to the plant or the woods, but the quantity of slow-growing ground pine needed to fashion a wreath or garland may damage or destroy the entire plant colony. we can find more gracious ways to celebrate the season. Pine, fir, and spruce make robust wreaths, especially when adorned with rhododendron and holly, perhaps from shrubs in our own yards. btwberkshires.com
