The Tallgrass Visitorโ€™s Center brief asked us to design a building combining a visitorโ€™s center and offices for the National Park Service on the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve north of Strong City, Kansas (a national land preserve). The site, an important and endangered ecosystem, required a gentle and sustainable approach to building. Programmatically, the design was divided into two parts: a visitorโ€™s center (which sits on an elevated tray) and offices for the various local, state, and national park services. To provide access to the elevated visitorโ€™s center, a large grass ramp (with a smaller, paved footpath) was created, providing a strong procession to the main visitorโ€™s entrance. A folding roof (drawing from the local barn typology) was used to collect rainwater and prevent solid runoff; mitigate unwanted solar gain; channel summer wind and block winter wind; and provide light throughout the year.

Site Axonometric Stavangerโ€™s New Cultural Hub: (1) Library (2) Amphitheater (3) Existing Contemporary Art Gallery

The Stavanger Library brief asked us to master plan and design a library for an underutilized park space in Stavanger, Norway. The first half of the project was composed of research and site design and the second half of the project was spent designing the library building. At the time of the project, the site was essentially the ungroomed backyard of the surrounding buildings. Currently, the site is unofficially divided into three zones: an overgrown, rocky, steep hill; a more gently sloping hill composing the โ€œparkโ€ portion of the site; and a small, paved plaza surrounding the cityโ€™s most prominent landmark: the Valberg Tower. The site has no primary entrance and is accessed from all sides. Programmatically, the addition of a new library would anchor a small cultural district consisting of an outdoor amphitheater for performances, a contemporary art museum (existing), and the new library.

View from the harbor. The new building needed to respect cityรข€™s most prominent landmark, Valberg Tower, being simultaneously monumental from the street level and deferential to the tower from the rest of the city (through the preservation of sight lines).

Significant site entry points

Circulation armature connects entry points and defines tower plaza

Building footprint: building provides edge to armature to create enclosed outdoor space

Pedestrian access punctures building, separating building into admin, digital media, and reading/research sections

Each floor defines a different functional area (ie, fiction/nonfiction/reference). Roof extends tower plaza

Monolithic load-bearing walls separate genres within sections

An interior linear stairway connects floors. Two stairways and a ramp allow access to upper tier of site from lower

/

The buildingโ€™s section mediates between landscape and building, with the roof acting as an extension of the tower plaza. Much of the building rests โ€œundergroundโ€, but uses vertical openings to allow light into the lower levels.

Building from north (photo by Mike Sinclair)

The Camp Daisy Hindman Bathhouse project developed through a relationship with the Girl Scouts of America and the Design+Make thesis studio at Kansas State University. A first-semester masterplanning exercise revealed an opportunity to design and build a bathhouse using the Girl Scoutsรข€™ deferred maintenance budget. The project brief called for eight showers and four toilets to be built adjacent to a pre-designed splash park. Through a series of design charettes, conversations with consultants, and various exercises including budgeting, specifications, physical prototyping, and construction documentation, the design for the bathhouse was developed and refined. The project was built in the spring of 2013 and was the recipient of a national Residential Architect Honorable Mention Award in 2014. Significant Constraints: Budget: $100,000 for buildings ($280,000 total [includes sitework]) Timeline: 5 months (designed and built) Low maintenance/hardy local materials
