Autumn is for Oysters

W

hile summer is without question my favorite season of all, I find several things truly enjoyable and beautiful during the fall months.

“This was a setup at an outdoor market,” says cover photographer Kermit Cox, who has taught photography at the Brunswick Center at Southport. “The sun was bright, and the se ng was just perfect for a photograph.” Carpe diem, Kermit! Read our stories about winter squash on pages 12 and 13 of this issue.

First and foremost, I enjoy sipping a warm beverage, like a Caramel Apple Spice, without breaking a sweat. The comfort and hip style of flannels, soft and oversized sweaters, leather boots, toboggans (or “beanies”, depending on where you’re from) are a plus. I love leaves turning a lovely shade of yellow and orange, apples being picked, pies being baked, bonfires being built. I could keep going, but I will end with my favorite part of fall— oyster roasts begin.

Oysters for Fall Not everyone loves oysters, but I find them to be so tasty and comforting in the cooler temperatures. Not to mention— they were my Papa’s favorite, so they always bring back sweet memories of when he was still here with us. If you’re an oyster lover, here’s an event created just for you—the 40th Annual North Carolina Oyster Festival (ncoysterfestival.com).

Have some fun and take part in the contests or sit back and watch them all unfold before you. Contests include an Oyster Eating Contest, Oyster Shucking Contest, and Oyster Stew Cook-off made up of stews prepared by local restaurants. Antique Furniture Finds Its Way to BSRI Thrift Stores By Mike McGurn Thrift Stores Operations Manager

H

ello and happy fall, everyone! Hope you're enjoying the cooler weather and everything this beautiful time of year has to offer. Including yard sales and thrift store shopping. While we rarely get true antiques—items 100 years old or more—we recently received a single donation of a four-piece antique dining room set and a large, stunning secretary.

The dining room set, which is on wheels, includes a large table and leaf with six chairs; a long buffet/server; and two china cabinets, one with a large oval window on the middle door which is decorated with scrolled wood carvings. The ornate set also features carvings on the doors and drawers, mother-of-pearl inlays on the knobs, and fluted decorative feet on every piece. One of the most unusual features is a drawer almost 6 feet wide across the top of the long buffet/server. The knobs are so far apart that it is quite literally difficult for most people to be able to grab both of them at the same time and open the drawer. Most everyone who sees it has never seen a drawer that wide! The secretary is super neat and super big too, measuring eight feet high! It is ornate as well, with decorative carvings and framed glass doors. When the desktop is lowered a very functional organizer is revealed, with four letter slots and four small drawers on each side and a small center cabinet and drawer. There are a couple of secret compartments that have tough-to-find releases, for hiding money and other valuables. While the small china cabinet sold almost right away, as of press time all the other pieces are still available at our Calabash Thrift Store at very reasonable prices. You never know what you'll find at BSRI Thrift Stores, but items like these will transport you back in time and give you a great appreciation of the craftsmanship and care that went into making them.

We love an ques! This china cabinet and buffet and other an que pieces are for sale at our Calabash Thri Store.

Calabash Senior Housing Makes Progress By Beth A. Klahre

T

he August issue of the Senior Buzz announced the start of a new senior living housing project in Calabash. The project, led by Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI), will develop an independent living facility for seniors on the 15-acre property behind the Brunswick Center at Calabash. Plans call for a 136-unit apartment complex with a 74-unit three-story apartment building alongside multi-family ranch-style buildings of four, six, or eight units. Conveniently located next to the Brunswick Center at Calabash, residents will be able to easily take advantage of the programs and services at the center and enjoy indoor and outdoor public spaces, walking trails, and more.

Floor Plans Are Nearly Done According to BSRI Director of Corporate Strategy Courtney Bledsoe, the project is reaching an exciting time. “We have made great headway over the past several weeks. All floor plans have been finalized and we are now moving into the interior design process and selections. I can't wait for our future residents to see the beautiful apartments we are building for them!” BSRI has partnered with Norris and Tunstall Consulting Engineers of Wilmington. The group has been vital to the development process from the start and is currently working on obtaining construction permits and approvals. Bledsoe

says, “We are getting closer to construction every day. The engineers have created master site plans, working closely with us to make the most out of the property. They have consulted with the town administrator, commissioners, and planning board to ensure our plans are viable and all concerns are addressed before development begins.” Simultaneous to permitting, the team is accepting bids from local contractors and builders. Bledsoe says, “We have some great contenders, but have not made a final selection at this time. We know that we want to contract locally as it is extremely important to BSRI and our investors to provide job opportunities in our community and support Brunswick County's economy.”

Website Coming Soon BSRI will begin promoting the new community through the senior centers first. Interested potential leasers can get on an emailing list now by stopping at any of the senior centers in the county. BSRI will begin emailing information when a new website is launched in the next couple of months.

Construction Timeline

This preliminary floor plan by MPG Architects shows what a two-bedroom corner unit might look like when the Calabash ranch-style buildings are finished.

No final date is set, but BSRI hopes to begin construction by the end of 2021. Once construction starts, leasing rates will be determined based on current market rates. The 74-unit building will be the first to accept tenants.

OCTOBER 2021

Bledsoe says, “We will have a range of rental rates depending on the apartment size and layout, so there will be plenty of options available.” BSRI expects to lease all of the apartments in the 74-unit

The Coastal Buzz

Bsri news building in the first couple of months of construction. Bledsoe is very optimistic about the project. “Creating more housing options that offer the support that BSRI provides through our many

11

programs and services has been a goal of BSRI for many years. In order to truly help seniors stay independent and age in place, it is our responsibility to provide more opportunities to do so.”

Meet Courtney Bledsoe, BSRI Director of Corporate Strategy By Beth A. Klahre

C

ourtney Bledsoe is the new Director of Corporate Strategy for Brunswick County Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI.). She takes on this role with drive and ambition backed by plenty of relevant experience. Prior to working for BSRI, Courtney was a restaurant manager and event coordinator for 10 years where she helped open several new locations and secured new business. During her 13 years of management, she led several startups. In 2018, Courtney started her career with BSRI. She was hired as Assistant Center Director of the Brunswick Center at Leland and after three months was transferred to the Brunswick Center at Supply in the same role. She accepted a promotion to center director at the Brunswick Center at Calabash in September 2018, where she led a team of staff and volunteers to open the newest BSRI center. The center received the SCOPE Center of Excellence Certification based on foundational efficient systems and processes. This past April, Courtney was promoted to her current position. For Courtney, working for BSRI is not just a job. “I have always had a heart for serving others. I knew that I would have a great sense of fulfillment working for a mission-based organization. When I first discovered BSRI, I was really just seeking a volunteer opportunity. I thought about maybe teaching yoga or driving a Meals on Wheels route in my free time. When I saw the job posting for the assistant director position, I felt called to apply.” And she is very happy that she did! “Working with this population has been so rewarding. I love that I can use my skills to serve people in such impactful ways. I truly cherish the relationships I have built with our participants and community. I am forever grateful.” Courtney is excited about her new role in strategy.

While she says that there is much to accomplish, her short-term goals are to establish more housing opportunities for older adults. She says, “I love to get to be on the ground level of new opportunities for BSRI. “I feel my greatest strength is empowering and encouraging my team members to be their best. I find that encouragement and support produces the best outcome in business.”

Healthy Bites

OCTOBER 2021

Squash—It’s What’s for Dinner By Joan Leotta

M

y personal fall favorite for savory dishes is the acorn squash.

Acorn squash may be the healthiest of all the squash varieties. It offers more folate, calcium, magnesium (nearly one-third of a day's worth in one cup) and potassium than butternut, Hubbard, or spaghetti squash. Eat one cup of cooked acorn squash and you'll get more potassium (896 milligrams) than if you ate two medium bananas (844 mg).

Tackle the Squash You can find this power-packed veggie in most groceries beginning in the fall and usually through the winter holidays. It is a large green, acorn shape, with bits of orange at either end. Picking one is pretty easy since it will be green and yellowish in sort of equal parts, heavy for its size with no soft spots. It’s a hard squash to cut through. I make a couple of slits , microwave for up to thirty seconds and find that softens the outer skin enough to cut the squash in half and take out the seeds.

Stuff the Squash A medium-sized acorn squash can be simply cut in half, seeds scooped out, a pat of butter and teaspoon of brown sugar and a pinch of salt put into the cavity, and baked at 350˚ until soft. Time of cooking varies depending on the squash. It’s a lovely side dish. My favorite way to consume all

of this goodness is with sausage and apple stuffing. I purchase Neese’s sausage (a North Carolina natural product), cut the one-pound block in half, freeze half for another time, and put the sausage in a pan with one sliced apple, half a small onion, salt, pepper, and some breadcrumbs. When the sausage is cooked and the apples are soft, I crack in an egg to bind the stuffing.

Stuffed Acorn Squash

I cut the squash in half, scoop out the seeds, and soften the squash by putting it open-side down on a microwave safe plate with a few tablespoons of water. Then I cook it in the microwave for up to for five minutes, and then a minute at a time until it’s soft.

1 egg

When the squash is soft enough, I fill each half with the sausage stuffing, sprinkle some grated Romano cheese on top, and bake the squash, covered, for about twenty minutes. The recipe is at right. We usually fix a green salad as the side dish and when feeling very festive, accompany the meal with Italian bread.

1 medium acorn squash, cut in half, seeds scooped out ½ block of Neese’s country sausage or 8 oz. of any other kind of loose sausage 1 medium to small gala or fuji apple, sliced (I don’t peel mine) 1 small onion, chopped ¼ cup breadcrumbs Salt and pepper to taste ¼ cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese Sauté the sausage, apple, and onion together until the sausage is cooked. Add the breadcrumbs, salt, pepper. Remove from the fire. Add the egg and stir. Divide the stuffing into two parts to stuff each half of the acorn squash. Place the filled halves in casserole dish. Sprinkle with grated Pecorino Romano cheese Cover and bake at 350˚ for 20 minutes. Serves 2.

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer prevention can be monitored by maintaining a healthy weight through exercise and eating healthy foods. Some studies have shown that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can be beneficial to reduce the risk of cancer. Food high in omega-3 fatty acids include: •

Fish and seafood (salmon, tuna, sardines)

Nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, walnuts)

Plant oils (flaxseed oil, soybean oil)

Screen for breast cancer by doing self-exams and going to the doctor regularly. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is a great resource for information, including education downloads and ways to support others. Find this information at nationalbreastcancer.org.

1 cup diced carrots 1 quart vegetable stock (or chicken stock) 1 tsp. paprika ½ tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. turmeric Salt and pepper to taste Heat olive oil over medium heat in a large pan, add onions, garlic, carrots, and squash, and sauté until the onions are translucent. Add the stock and spices. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 30 minutes or until the squash is fully cooked (should be very soft). Allow the soup to cool then add to a blender or food processor. Once blended smooth, add back to the pan, and serve. Serve this alongside chicken for a balanced meal and add toasted pumpkin seeds on top for a healthy crunch. Serves 6.

FOOD OF THE MONTH: BUTTERNUT SQUASH What happens when you drop a pumpkin? Squash! Butternut squash is in season now and is a perfect fall vegetable for decoration and eating. It’s high in potassium, an electrolyte that helps nerve and muscle function and promotes a regular heartbeat. And it’s an excellent source of vitamin A and fiber. Good Works with a Dash of History: DAR By Joan Leotta

T

he National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) is more than just another ladies’ club. Founded nationally circa 1890, the organization applies the commitment of their ancestors, who formed a country, to maintaining and continuing that heritage through historic conservation and community good works. The Brunswick Town Chapter, founded in 1976, has 160 members who come from all over the United States, says Martha Koletar, regent of the chapter. Koletar says, “I joined the DAR because I am interested in genealogy and how my ancestors contributed to the freedom I enjoy today. I believe strongly in historical preservation and in honoring those who served in this country.”

Community Service Koletar notes that last year, local chapter members completed 6,400 hours of community service even with all of the Covid-19 restrictions. “We buy and sell wreaths through the Wreaths Across America Program and place them on veteran graves. We support veterans in a wide range of activities including donating clothing. The chapter sends coupons to military base stores and donates to programs to assist disabled veterans, as well as donating special head markers for all veterans,” Koletar says. Members also act as poll workers, tutors in schools, participate in cemetery

cleaning, give to food pantries, and more. The chapter’s work in schools includes supporting local schools in many ways, including by offering DAR scholarships, giving Good Citizen awards, and setting up displays and offering talks during the annual September Constitution Week events. The Brunswick Chapter also donates books for adults and children to the local Literary Council. Chapter member Teresa McLamb adds, “We sponsor speakers on local history, annually recognize first responders, and donate to the community through some fundraising events.” She notes that chapter members also made hundreds of masks during Covid. Members participate in parades (often in costume), contribute to celebrations at Bells Across America

in the area’s fire stations, and conduct school programs during Constitution Week in September. At naturalization ceremonies the DAR gives out American flags and small copies of the Constitution.

Genealogy Workshops In addition, the chapter holds genealogy workshops. Those workshops have special relevance for people who might want to join the group. While there are no restrictions of age, race, or religion, applicants must be nominated by a current member and be able to trace their direct blood lineage back to a patriot of the Revolutionary War period. The chapter registrar and other members help applicants find the appropriate documentation. Find out more about the DAR on the chapter’s website at

New Books to Share This October By Donna Ruth Morgan

O

ctober’s book reviews are all new books from 2021 and they all come recommended. There’s something for everyone in this month’s collection, all available at Brunswick County libraries. The President’s Daughter is a second collaboration between a prolific author and a famous politician. This story melds James Patterson’s expert literary techniques and Bill Clinton’s mastery of political intrigue. The premise of a retired POTUS/USN Seal careening through deathdefying danger requires suspension of disbelief for this good vs. evil narrative. Nutshell review: The 600+ pages might cause some readers hesitation, but the book is a fun, fast read. Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine outlines the disconnect between consumers and medical experts and the connection between Big Pharma and those same medical experts. Aiming at junk foods and the Standard American Diet, Dr. Robert H. Lustig unpacks lots of scientific data then connects it to daily life. He presents the stark contrast between “the real

story of food” and “the story of real food.” Nutshell review: Learn how our eating habits can trigger or prevent disease. How Stella Learned to Talk: The Groundbreaking Story of the World's First Talking Dog is a fascinating story of an author/dog owner/ speech-language pathologist who uses a special device to “talk” with her pet. Client children who learned to communicate inspired Christina Hunger to teach her pup through a process she explains in meticulous detail. Nutshell review: Chapters end with instructional “Takeaways for Teaching Your Dog” for ambitious owners who want to communicate with their canine companions. Golden Girl is classic Elin Hilderbrand with a supernatural twist, multiple perspectives, and a plot that highlights Nantucket and its culture. Love, tragedy, forgiveness, and (of course) romance abound in a novel that reads like a farewell after its 26 predecessors! It was released as a summertime beach read, but fans will enjoy an autumn evening warmed by this everyloose-end-tied-up mystery. Nutshell review: Ignore the distraction of the author’s clumsy insertion of social justice topics.

Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night. ~Hal Borland

OCTOBER 2021

Older Adults Shouldn’t Delay Preventive Health Care (StatePoint) Many older adults have delayed preventive health care during the pandemic because of fear of visiting the doctor’s office. As more people get vaccinated for COVID-19, now may be a good time to make up for gaps in care, according to Dr. Gina Conflitti, chief medical officer for Medicare Advantage at Cigna. “Delaying preventive care can catch up with us, especially as we get older,” says Dr. Conflitti. “As people age, preventive care becomes increasingly important in helping prevent or manage chronic conditions. Doctors’ offices have nationally-accepted, evidence-based COVID-19 safety protocols in place and many preventive services are covered by Medicare or Medicare Advantage at no extra cost when visiting a participating or in-network provider.”

Consider These Preventive Measures Your own doctor should determine what preventive services you need. Among those to consider: Annual wellness visit. Covered by Medicare, this is a great way to develop a personalized annual care plan. Among other things, your doctor will ask you to fill out a health risk assessment to help determine the services likely needed. The doctor will assess how the patient is feeling physically and emotionally, since mental health often impacts physical health. It’s important for the patient to be open about their feelings, current condition, and medical history. Mammogram. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Risk increases with age. Fortunately, breast cancer is often treated successfully when found early. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends women 50 to 74 at average risk get a mammogram every two years. Colorectal screening. Like breast cancer, colorectal cancer risk increases with age. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps early so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. The USPSTF recommends screening for adults age 45 to 75. Medicare covers the cost of a screening colonoscopy once every two years for those at high risk or once every 10 years for those at lower risk.

Bone density scan. USPSTF recommends women aged 65 and older be routinely screened for osteoporosis, a disease in which bones become weak and brittle. According to the agency, routine screening should begin at 60 for women at increased risk. See page 7 for upcoming osteoporosis informational meetings at your nearby Brunswick County center. Eye exam. A routine eye exam is important to identify early signs of eye disease that are more likely as people age. People with diabetes are particularly prone to retinopathy, which leads to vision loss, and it’s recommended they have annual retinal screening exams. Vaccinations. While the COVID-19 vaccine is certainly a top priority, especially for older adults, there are other important vaccines, including flu, pneumonia, and shingles. Patients should ask their doctors about their recommendations as autumn risk increases. “Even in the best of times, health screenings and vaccinations are often a missed opportunity,” says Dr. Conflitti. “But with these services, individuals can take control of their health in partnership with their doctors. As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The informa on contained in this ar cle is not intended to be a subs tute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider with any ques ons you may have regarding a medical condi on or treatment and before undertaking a new health care regimen.

Brunswick County Botanical Gardens Open House Oct. 23 Features New Additions to Discovery Garden By Pat Naughton

“L

ook, but don’t touch” is something you won’t hear from a mother’s mouth at the Discovery Garden, one of several gardens in Brunswick County Botanical Gardens. In the Discovery Garden, visitors young and old are encouraged to experience nature with all senses. This year Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Lisa Schrager has added several things for children to experience. There are four bottle trees that display types of leaf patterns. A raised bed offers a chance to touch and smell aromatic herbs of lavender, tarragon, basil, and oregano. All these herbs do well in containers. There is a new maze of stone paths that lead to a vine-covered tunnel. After all that exploring, there are small chairs for the children to take a break.

A rest stop and raised bed herb garden enliven the Discovery Garden in Brunswick County’s Botanical Gardens.

Shady Native, Discovery, Fragrance, Celebration, Edible, Rain, Welcome,

The Discovery Garden is the largest of the sixteen gardens in the botanical garden. The size of the garden didn’t deter Schrager. She’s been an Extension Master Gardener Volunteer for three years and has been tending to the Discovery Garden for two years. In addition to being curator of the Discovery Garden, she is also part of the plant propagation team.

Native Meadow, Curb Appeal, MicroClimate, Containers, and Reflection gardens. Plants from the plant propagation team will also be for sale. The Brunswick Botanical Gardens are located at the Brunswick County Government Center near the Extension Building on 25 Referendum Drive. Bring the kids and turn them loose to experience nature.

Open House Invites All

For more information about the Botanical Gardens, go to bcmastergardenerva.org/brunswickcounty-botanical-garden/.

You can experience the all the gardens at the Botanical Garden open house from 9 a.m. till noon on Oct. 23. There will be guides at each garden which include the Azalea, Rose, Pollinator, Southern Live Oak,

To see videos of each garden, go to the YouTube channel Brunswick County Botanical Gardens: youtube.com/channel/ UC15Z_QPup3GDUePqQXXoZvA/ videos.

BSRI Notes National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day

B

SRI recently recognized National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. It’s a day to call attention to the growing number of people living long and full lives with HIV and to aging-related challenges of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care. People with HIV are living longer thanks to treatment with HIV medicines. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2016, nearly half the people in the United States who were living with HIV were 50 or older. In 2017, one in six new diagnoses of HIV occurred in this age group. People aging with HIV can face treatment-related challenges, such as drug interactions between HIV medicines and medicines used for other conditions. Older adults also face HIV prevention and testing challenges. Among older adults who received an HIV diagnosis in 2015, 50% had been living with HIV for four-and-a-half years before they were diagnosed. A delayed diagnosis means treatment with HIV medicines is also delayed, which gives HIV more time to damage the immune system. Late diagnoses can occur because older adults may not think they are at risk of HIV, and they may mistake HIV symptoms for those of normal aging. Health care providers may not always test older people for HIV infection.

To learn more, go to these National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day resources about HIV and aging: www.cdc.gov/hiv/library/awareness/nhaad.html aidsvu.org/national-hiv-aids-and-aging-awareness-day2020/ www.apa.org/pi/aids/resources/aging-awareness

JUST FOR LAUGHS

1

A woman told her friend, “I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.” She said, “So, I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But by the time I got my leotards on, the class was already over.”

2 3

Did you hear the watermelon joke? It’s pitiful.

A businessman boarded an international flight and found a fancy young woman seated next to him wearing a large diamond ring. He asked her about the ring. “It is the Klopman diamond, but it comes with a terrible curse,” she said. “What’s the curse?” he asked. She replied, “Mr. Klopman.”

4

Three old guys are out walking. The first one says, “Windy, isn’t it?” The second one says, “No, it’s Thursday!” The third one says, “So am I. Let’s go get a beer.”

5 6

Why don’t they play poker in the jungle? Too many cheetahs.

The good thing about having a bad memory is that jokes can be funny more than once.

Let us go upon the meadow. Let us go there you and I. As the sun begins to li his head, in a new October sky. Let us play upon the meadow. Let us play there you and I. And make our castles from the clouds, in a noon October sky. Let us linger on the meadow. Let us linger you and I. Un"l the heavens are but mellow gold, in a late October sky. Let us dream upon the meadow. Let us dream there you and I. And share our dreams with all the stars, in a night October sky.

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Please Welcome Lora to Our Southport Team “I am so happy to see all the smiling faces here! It really makes my day! My husband and I have been happily retired in Southport for 10 years. Before that we lived in many states, finally settling in Central New York and raising our family. I am a proud Mom to two great adult children and Grammie to two adorable grandbabies. “In my forty years working as a nurse, I met so many wonderful seniors and am so happy to be working here with seniors again. Thank you, Lora” Please come by and introduce yourself to the newest BSRI family member! Lora has graciously filled the front desk position that was vacated when our dear Kate was needed by a friend who is suffering from cancer and she stepped in to help with the friend’s young children. We welcome Lora and wish Kate much strength and love on her latest journey.

We wish to extend a huge Thank You to the Southport Police Department. The picture to the left is of a card that we find in the mornings, placed in a door jamb. We are indeed so very thankful to the dedicated men and women who work to keep our community safe! Their dedication provides us with a safe and peaceful environment to call home.

Case Management...How Can I Help You?

We are very fortunate to form strong partnerships with community agencies such as Brunswick County Arts Council, Brunswick County Literacy Council, and Brunswick County Veterans Service Office.

Join Tikila Morgan, BSRI Case Manager, for monthly presentations about caregiver resources and other important information. October’s topic is Mental Illness Awareness. This healthcare issue is observed on October 3—9. If you or someone you know need help navigating the mental health system, please reach out to Tikila.

Thanks to grant funding through the Arts Council, we purchased four Djembe Drums and two Bongo Drums. Participants enjoy the new Drum Circle the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. We also appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Literacy Council for our Technology 101 classes! Sue Railing, Program Coordinator, developed a technology program for center participants that included computer basics such as setting up email, using the internet, and using YouTube. We hope to continue these classes. Finally, thanks to Anita Hartsell, Senior Veterans Service Officer with Brunswick County Veterans Services Office. Anita presented on “Veterans Benefits” and shared available and new benefits that Veterans and beneficiaries can access.

F,e Saf/y Be sure to attend a Fire Safety presentation by Captain John Stinson and Fireman Ralph Sikes with the Supply Volunteer Fire Department. Topics include how to use a fire extinguisher, smoke alarm awareness, and how to make a fire exit plan.

When: Monday, October 18, 2021 Whрe: Supply Senior Center Time: 10:45 a.m.

In September, Tikila presented discussed National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day—a day to call attention to the growing number of people living long and full lives with HIV. She also educated us about aging-related challenges of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care. People with HIV are living longer thanks to treatment with HIV medicines. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2016, nearly half the people in the United States who were living with diagnosed HIV were aged 50+.

N#r i& and Medicine Join BSRIs Marilou Smith, Prescription Assistance Program Coordinator, and Mallory Balice, Wellness Program Manager, for an educational session about Osteoporosis and how nutrition affects health conditions and resources to lower the cost of prescriptions. A win-win opportunity!

When: Tuesday, October 19, 2021 Whрe: Supply Senior Center Time: 11:30 a.m.

October is Long-Term Care Planning Month. During this time, we encourage older adults to take a look at their potential need for these services in the future. While no one can predict the future, Long Term Care Planning explores the options available should the time arise when services are needed. Long-term care incorporates services outside of medical care, such as support for everyday living and basic personal care. Medical insurance does not usually cover these services, so advance planning to cover the services is needed. Advance planning offers older adults more choices and decision-making opportunities. When we plan ahead, we have more time to save for long-term care, too. You can observe Long Term Planning Month by visiting or talking with your family and make a plan. Explore your options and discover what is available to you. If you have any questions about planning talk to Tikila for resources.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Studies show that nearly one in eight women in the United States, and one in a thousand men, will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime, and being proactive in this fight is crucial. Breast self-exams should be done monthly. Your doctor can also examine your breasts annually. Women over 40 years or who have a family history of breast cancer, should schedule a mammogram. Be sure to attend a special presentation about Breast Cancer Awareness offered by the YMCA this month. Date and time to be announced.

Tai Chi for Ar r is—Evening Class Embrace mind, body and spirit by practicing one of the most effective exercises for health, mind and body!
