Thank You, C mun y P tnрs!

We are very fortunate to form strong partnerships with community agencies such as Brunswick County Arts Council, Brunswick County Literacy Council, and Brunswick County Veterans Service Office.

Thanks to grant funding through the Arts Council, we purchased four Djembe Drums and two Bongo Drums. Participants enjoy the new Drum Circle the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.

We also appreciate the opportunity to partner with the Literacy Council for our Technology 101 classes! Sue Railing, Program Coordinator, developed a technology program for center participants that included computer basics such as setting up email, using the internet, and using YouTube. We hope to continue these classes.

Finally, thanks to Anita Hartsell, Senior Veterans Service Officer with Brunswick County Veterans Services Office. Anita presented on “Veterans Benefits” and shared available and new benefits that Veterans and beneficiaries can access.

Case Management...How Can I Help You?

Join Tikila Morgan, BSRI Case Manager, for monthly presentations about caregiver resources and other important information. October’s topic is Mental Illness Awareness. This healthcare issue is observed on October 3—9. If you or someone you know need help navigating the mental health system, please reach out to Tikila.

In September, Tikila presented discussed National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day—a day to call attention to the growing number of people living long and full lives with HIV. She also educated us about aging-related challenges of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care.

People with HIV are living longer thanks to treatment with HIV medicines. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2016, nearly half the people in the United States who were living with diagnosed HIV were aged 50+.

October is Long-Term Care Planning Month. During this time, we encourage older adults to take a look at their potential need for these services in the future. While no one can predict the future, Long Term Care Planning explores the options available should the time arise when services are needed. Long-term care incorporates services outside of medical care, such as support for everyday living and basic personal care. Medical insurance does not usually cover these services, so advance planning to cover the services is needed. Advance planning offers older adults more choices and decision-making opportunities. When we plan ahead, we have more time to save for long-term care, too. You can observe Long Term Planning Month by visiting or talking with your family and make a plan. Explore your options and discover what is available to you. If you have any questions about planning talk to Tikila for resources. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Studies show that nearly one in eight women in the United States, and one in a thousand men, will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime, and being proactive in this fight is crucial.

Breast self-exams should be done monthly. Your doctor can also examine your breasts annually. Women over 40 years or who have a family history of breast cancer, should schedule a mammogram.

Be sure to attend a special presentation about Breast Cancer Awareness offered by the YMCA this month. Date and time to be announced.
