SUMMER AT YOUR LIBRARY Track Your Reading and Activities June 1 through August 13, 2022

Broward County Library’s annual Summer Learning Program is a series of free, fun, events for all ages designed to teach, entertain, and inspire creativity. This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities,” with programs focusing on ocean professions, ocean life, pirates, and all things oceans. There is something for everyone with book discussions, bookrelated trivia and craft programs, puppet shows, musical performances, theatrical productions, oceanography, sea life, ocean preservation, and more. This summer we are hosting online challenges and in person and online programming that will be sure to get you in the summer swim of things! Readers of all ages can preregister for challenges beginning June 1st, making them eligible for chances to win great prizes from Bluefoot Pirate Adventures, Miami Children’s Museum, Everglades Holiday Park, Butterfly World, Miami Seaquarium, Museum of Discovery and Science, Florida Panthers, Water Taxi, Zoo Miami, and more. Reading over the summer helps prevent learning loss in children and teens and builds skills that maintain or improve academic proficiency scores. Adults can read for enjoyment, explore our many digital resources, and attend programs online and in person while modeling good learning behaviors to children and teens. Start now by registering your entire family for our Summer Challenge (via Beanstack) at Broward.org/Library/Summer! We have reading challenges for all ages, from Early Learners to Children to Teens to Adults.

Summer LEARNING matters!

READ AND TRACK YOUR FUN FROM JUNE 1 - AUGUST 13, 2022 The Broward County Library Summer Program encourages children, teens, and adults to continue to read over the summer months. Carve out time for the types of books that interest you and your young readers. Reading success in older children, teens, and adults is connected to positive feelings about reading when they are younger. Summer learning matters – it inspires a love of reading and helps prevent students from falling behind when it is time to report back to school. Beanstack, our online tracking software, makes it easy for children, teens, adults, and families to earn digital badges and chances to win grand prizes by keeping track of their reading and completing fun activities.

STEP 1:

Register an individual reader or an entire family online through our BCL Beanstack website or Beanstack Tracker App (Apple or Android).

STEP 2:

Read/listen, complete activities and track your progress through BCL Beanstack. Aim for your age group goal.

STEP 3:

Earn digital badges for logging books you read and for completing activities.

EXTRA CHALLENGE:

Keep reading to earn more chances to win grand prizes (grand prizes are chosen by raffle drawings)

ALREADY HAVE A BCL BEANSTACK ACCOUNT?

Log in and update your account and enroll in the 2022 BCL Summer Online Program Challenge. HAVE A BCPS BEANSTACK ACCOUNT Broward County Public School students - make sure to link your school and public library Beanstack accounts this summer.

DIRECTOR’S MES Summer is gaining on us, and I’m daydreaming of being at the beach with prize-winning paperbacks that have been calling my name all year. Or maybe lounging in a hammock with my tablet full of ebooks that weighs only a few ounces. I’m also thinking of barbeques and picnics with luscious recipes from downloaded magazines – one of my favorite library freebies.

Kids and teens are feeling impatient too, itching to start their summer vacations, waiting to see what Broward County Library (BCL) has in store for them. The theme of the Summer Learning Program is “Oceans of Possibilities.” As always, we have a full agenda of special events, crammed with adventure, games, and good times for children and adults. And yes, prizes!

Spring turning to summer always fills me with the anticipation of good things to come. I surely can’t wait to share the upcoming selections from my Director’s Book Club! I am so eager to get into two amazing picks with you. In June/July, the book is Walk with Me: A Biography of Fannie Lou Hamer by Kate Larson, a true story which takes us to a critical time in the Civil Rights movement and gives us a connection to the heart of a courageous woman. In August/September, we will chat about Circe by Madeline Miller, a fictional woman of passion and power who, like Fannie Lou, shook her world.

The Summer Learning Program is a ten-week reading and activity program designed to bring preschoolers, children, teens, and adults to the library and keep them reading all summer long. Join me and the 16,000 other readers who enroll each year, and the 165,000 customers who are all-in on the Summer Learning Program. We kick off the Summer Learning Program with the 17th Annual Children’s BookFest, a terrific day of free, non-stop family entertainment for the 3,000+ children and families that attend this event each year. For 2022 there’ll be tales of the sea from Salty Sue the Pirate, stilt walkers Poseidon and Jellyfish, chalk art and temporary tattoo stations, dynamic performances from Digeridoo Down Under and Ms. Penny from KidVision Pre-K of South Florida PBS, Broward Center Spotlights singers, augmented reality demos, food trucks, vendors, and a real fire truck to paint. Whew! Since our community loves author events, we are ready to make a summer splash for adults with Soul of a Swimmer by Carla Albano (In Person, two locations). Children won’t want to miss Draw My Life with Lily Williams (Online), two of many programs sponsored by the Broward Public Library Foundation (BPLF), which also funds Florida Aquatic Summer Series (Online on Facebook Live), Circus Fanta-Sea (In Person), Puppet Show (four locations), and Tales of the Sea (In Person, multiple locations). The BPLF has also underwritten in-person workshops and shows with Miami Children’s Museum and the Morikami Museum, such as The Fisherman & the Dragon Palace (In Person, multiple locations), Katie’s Kids Yoga (In Person, multiple locations), Culture, Rhythm & Sounds (In Person, multiple locations).

6 SUMMER 2022

Broward.org/Library/Summer

SSAGE We recognize that libraries are more than places for fun. Without school lunch programs, many children in our community turn to their neighborhood library. Throughout the Summer Learning Program, 13 libraries are BreakSpot Locations where we will be serving a free meal and/or snacks. In addition to the Summer Learning Program events, we’re doing special summer celebrations. June will rock with the Caribbean American Heritage Month Kick Off (In person). Juneteenth Events such as Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom (Online) with Opal Lee, “the Grandmother of Juneteenth,” and BAM! It’s Juneteenth - Be Alive through Music (In Person) are among many observance programs. Certainly not to be missed is the 21st Blues & Sweet Potato Pie Juneteenth Festival (In Person), a BCL signature program dishing up BBQ and classic eats, Civil War historical re-enactors, blues/jazz music, historical displays, professional storytelling, children’s games, vintage exhibits, health screenings, and a Summer Learning Program sign up. We have been dreaming up activities for you and your families in every realm of interest. It’s free, it’s fabulous, it’s an “Ocean of Possibilities” – boundless and full of surprises. Take the plunge and dive into summer with us!
