2 September 2022 BROWARD.ORG/LIBRARY

It may surprise you to learn that banned books have included such iconic works as The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald; The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger; To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee; The Color Purple, by Alice Walker; Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling and many others. What if these wonderful works had been cast away?

I hope that with all that is going on you will find time to join me in my Director’s Book Club at the Miramar Library for Circe, on September 30. We are going to venture into the realm of Greek mythology and the magical domain of Circe. Let’s get together with other readers and talk about this knockout of a novel by Madeline Miller. Have a bold, free September!

Could you be someone who influences the world by writing? Your friends at BCL are rooting for you and are ready to get you started! If you’d like to see your thoughts in print, at no charge, let me direct you to the library’s self-publishing platform, where you can create, edit and format your own eBook, and to Biblioboard, where you can see and read finished titles by other emerging authors.

I am a proponent of voting because doing so not only creates your rights, it asserts them. We are now in a political season when the right to produce or read materials freely is being challenged. The right of libraries to operate by the professional standards of the American Library Association, rather than the dictates of a political faction, is a test many libraries are facing. Banning books, criminalizing librarians and taking away freedom of choice are in the news daily. National Voter Registration Day is September 20. However, on any date, you can register and check your voter registration status online, or come to any Broward County library for assistance. By the way, did you know many libraries are convenient polling places, and four BCL locations are permanent Supervisor of Elections branch offices?

As we ease into September from Labor Day, a holiday created to recognize the dignity and political rights of working people, it’s a perfect time to think about how our society changes, and what brings those changes about. The first two things that come to my mind are voting and the written word.

BROWARD COUNTY LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Director ’s MESSAGE

A person does not have to be a celebrity or social media influencer to be heard. Your vote is your voice! Casting a vote puts the people of your choice in office and creates a mandate for what you want accomplished. Another path to change is to influence others by your words.

Allison GrubbsSincerely,

September at Broward County Library (BCL) is about both those types of civic engagement, as we celebrate National Voter Registration Day and Banned Books Week. I invite you to join me and library staff at the polls to cast our ballots or in the stacks selecting banned books.

In addition to voting and expressing ourselves, we reserve the right to read. Banned Books Week is September 18 – 24 and it is an observance by book lovers of the freedom to exchange ideas, including those that may be unorthodox or unpopular. This includes the liberty to read books that have been condemned or banned.

Another thing we are not casting away is the opportunity to grow, experience and enjoy. Something I am pleased about is that we make every day count at BCL. When I browse September’s activities from the Events Calendar, I am just astounded at what your branch team members have dreamt up and made possible. Our array of programs for Hispanic Heritage (September 15 –October 15) look pretty inviting to me, along with so many unique offerings. From kittens to kombucha – we’ve got you covered!

rights and choice. These materials could range from what officials and parents have generally decided is inappropriate for children, such as books about gender and sexuality, to materials that they fear could cause students to feel upset, marginalized, or humiliated, and spread radical and racist Challengedideologies.books include Nobel Literature Prize-winner Toni Morrison's novels The Bluest Eye and Beloved, The 1619 Project, a bestseller about slavery in America, by Nicole Hannah-Jones, and All Boys Aren't Blue, by George M. Johnson. Librarians and school media specialists, who possess master’s degrees, are trained and consult a wide range of professional reviews. They are careful to select and build diverse and inclusive collections of materials that reflect the diversity of communities and the world.

Margaret Renkl’s columns have offered readers of The New York Times a weekly dose of natural beauty, human decency, and persistent hope from her home in Nashville. Now more than sixty of those pieces have been brought together in this sparkling new collection.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and pageturning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world.
