November is a month for giving thanks. It’s also a time for gatherings, cooking and crafts. In this season, gratitude is the attitude, with something for everyone at our library events.

For many families, the holiday season is celebrated with epic family meals. Let me remind the cooks who want to wow their company that the library catalog has a tremendous collection of cookbooks. Plus, among our over 4,200 free downloadable magazines, there are many food and wine publications full of luscious recipes for the holidays.

November is also Native American Heritage Month. Planned library programs include a talk on Native American history in South Florida, a dreamcatcher crafting workshop, and an Indigenous Culture exhibit at the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book in the Main Library, built around 19th century rare books housed in our vault. You’ll find these events on the library’s Events Calendar.

In honor of Veterans Day, our VetFest celebrations include live concerts from the South Florida Chamber Ensemble and from SENIOR Moments - the Unforgettable Band, family book discussions, special guest speakers, bingo, JROTC Color Guard, films, an art lesson, book giveaways, and a super special day of recognition, respect, and recreation.

Be sure to circle Saturday, November 19 on your calendar as Veterans Family Day comes to Reverend Samuel Delevoe Memorial Park in Fort Lauderdale. This is a collaborative event hosted by Broward County Library, Broward County Parks and Recreation, and the Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division. The community-wide outdoor festival includes music, free food, face painting, a magic show, and vendor and information tables. Veterans, we salute you!

November is Novel Writing Month. The library will offer teens a special workshop on using Biblioboard, a free book designing and self-publishing resource available to everyone. Did you know that Mary Shelley was eighteen years old when she wrote Frankenstein? No one is ever too young or too old to tell a good story, so go ahead and share yours.

If you are more a reader than writer, keep your eye on upcoming selections in my Director’s Book Club. We’ve got the most exciting fiction and non-fiction coming up, and I hope you’ll join me to dig in.

Yet one more thing to be thankful for this season: it’s time for Broward County Library’s 21st Annual StoryBook Festival, held November 19 at Southwest Regional Library.

This year’s theme is Get a Clue: Once Upon a Mystery. Traditional highlights include the Big Book Giveaway for the first 1,000 children, stage shows, the Fantasy Forest, Storytellers Swappin’ Ground, Tiny Tots Zone, the costume parade, and lots more. Something I love is that the kids who first came as little ones are now teen volunteers at the event!

On behalf of all of us at the library, Thank You! We have much to appreciate, which all begins with you, our stellar customers. It’s a pleasure to serve you and hear from you. Our goal is to be so excellent that you always count Broward County Library among your blessings.

Please visit your favorite branch library and stay in touch!

Sincerely,

Allison Grubbs

Director ’s MESSAGE
2 November 2022 Broward.org/Library

StoryBook Festival is 21!

This year Broward County Library presents the 21st Annual StoryBook Festival. It’s been my privilege and pleasure to first assist, and later coordinate, this signature event for the past 17 years. I work with many others, including colleagues in Community Engagement, Youth Librarians, library staff assistants, Friends of the Library, and community volunteers. Each year we organize an exciting day of growth and creativity for families. But the Festival is so much more than that!

The Festival creates a playful, hands-on environment where staff, adult and teen volunteers, along with top-notch professional performers, create a memorable experience. Among the Festival’s many activities are a trip through the Fantasy Forest; live entertainment and nationally recognized storytellers on three stages; marching in the costume parade; arts & crafts; a free book giveaway to the first 1,000 children -- the list goes on.

All children deserve to experience both the joy of reading and the skills in life that literacy brings. The StoryBook Festival

is designed to get children and their families hooked on reading by bringing books to life for young minds. Librarians don’t teach children the mechanics of reading, but rather the love of reading. By making reading fun, they set the early literacy foundations for reading success. This is what the StoryBook Festival is all about.

The StoryBook Festival also provides an opportunity to invite people to get a library card and access all the benefits that the library has to offer. We love it when little ones and their families go inside the library to get their first library cards – no one is too young.

This year’s theme is Get a Clue: Once Upon a Mystery. I invite you to come in costume, meet your favorite characters, and join the party -- we look forward to seeing you there!
