It’s Our 50th Year!

INSIDE: • Director’s Book Club • 50th Flashback • 50th Swag

D irector’s

Greetings!

Happy New Year, everyone! I am eagerly looking forward to 2024 and I hope you are as well. Our library staff has been planning exciting activities and programs to make this year a standout. When you see what they have planned for you, I think you’ll agree that they hit the mark. I have also been giving thought to what I can do to personally make 2024 a wonderful and memorable year for you. One of my New Year resolutions – one I will certainly keep – is to pledge my all to making Broward County Library

MESSAGE

(BCL) the best public library in the country. Among the ways I will do that is to maintain my commitment to freedom of access to materials and resistance to censorship for writers or readers. I n addition to celebrating intellectual freedom, we will also be celebrating our 50th year as a library system with a whirlwind of parties and commemorative programs. Do you love to dance, party, sing, watch movies, dress up, read, paint, chalk or attend concerts? That’s what we’re doing – every month from now until April 2024! You’ll be seeing 50th Anniversary events everywhere, so please join us for a good time, as always, as our guest. I hope the holidays we’ve just experienced are full of good memories for you. I’m always happiest about family time and the goofy presents we are able to laugh over, which we prefer to expensive gifts. No one enjoys their goodies more than my dog Kaylee, who thinks the holiday is entirely about her. All of which got me thinking about the seasonal rush to buy material things and the stampede to return them. It’s interesting to think about the differences between a library and a retail store. A library is a present you give yourself,

and your library card is the most magical card in your wallet. Unlike a charge card, you can go wild ordering without worrying about what a thing costs. You can take home about as much as you can carry, and a lot more than books. You can load up and splurge out. And there is never a bill for borrowing or a late payment! That’s especially true now that we no longer charge late fines. You may have received presents chosen by others that don’t reflect your taste. At the library you get to choose for yourself. The vast collection lets you affirm and explore who you are and create the person that you want to become. Change your occupation, power up your skills, revamp your personal style, refine your image – if you can imagine it, we’ve got a book, magazine, download or DVD for it. Give yourself a new, refreshed life for 2024. Another thing we can give ourselves is a membership to Friends of the Library. Each branch has a chapter and the cost to join is less than a trip to the movies. The Friends provide funding for library programs generated by ongoing book fairs that feature donated materials such as books, CDs, magazines, LPs, DVDs and more. The funds they take in sponsor exhibits, speakers and programs and buy materials cont.

changing books in my Director’s Book Club. The 2024 titles are posted, and we start with the tour de force true crime tale of The Art Thief by Michael Finkel. It’s a remarkable story of love, genius, eccentricity and obsession A final thing I am thrilled to promise bundled together with mystery you is a year of powerful, life- and 300 cultural masterpieces. beyond our budget. They are the ‘secret sauce’ to giving all of us a heightened library experience. I’m a member myself and I invite you to join and become a Friends volunteer.

Let’s dive into 2024 together and ring in a new year of happiness, health and great reads!

Sincerely,
