D irector’s

Greetings!

As we go forward this month, we continue celebrating our 50th Anniversary, delighting you with signature events and exciting new programs on this theme. We’re also celebrating Black History Month. Black history and culture are always topics of interest, at any time of year. Our library is a treasure trove of remarkable resources, such as the Broward County Library Digital Archives and the AARLCC Special Collection. I can’t begin to describe everything to be discovered there. Find even more exploring our online resources, looking under “African American” or “Black.”

MESSAGE

For those of us who love in-person events, use keywords “Black History” on the BCL events calendar for a host of fabulous programs, including Harmonies of Heritage: Black Excellence in Classical Music, Family Concert with Positively Africa, Celebrate African-American Cooking, Feel the African Fabrics, live storytelling, a drumming workshop for children and so much more. Don’t take off your party shoes yet – we have one of our most popular signature program coming on February 10, ArtLit 2024! Lauderhill Central Park Library will host this free, popular community celebration of art and literature for all ages. Fans of live music, the visual and spoken arts, or the cultures of Jamaica, Haiti and Trinidad-Tobago will be thrilled. Another of my favorite signature programs is adult-only and happens on February 23, Moonlight Tales, our outdoor evening soiree. We’re throwing a ‘70s flashback-to-the-past storytelling and music bash for grown-ups, calling it “A Groovy Kinda Night!” Get stoked with the professional storytelling of Antonio Rocha and David Novak, live disco music and complimentary refreshments provided by Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Libraries. It’s all free and makes for a great date night in the lush garden of the Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club,

adjacent to Main Library. Bring your special someone or the whole gang for a night out under the palm trees and stars. I’m looking forward to talking with you at the next Director’s Book Club about The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride, an exceptional writer who is one of former President Barack Obama’s favorite authors and one of mine. James McBride is a former staff writer for The Washington Post, People Magazine and The Boston Globe. His work has also appeared in Essence, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. A musician and composer, he has written for Anita Baker, Grover Washington Jr. and Gary Burton, among others. I’d love to introduce you to his work in this edgy novel about living on the fringes of society, a winner of the National Book Award. Please join me! It’s no secret that reading is one of my great pleasures in life. I’ve been a reader since I was a child and I encourage kids to immerse themselves in books. That said, let me take a moment to remind you how many formats we have besides books. For example, most of the Director’s Book Club selections come in multiple formats. The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store is available in our collection as a book, audio disc, eAudiobook or eBook. If time constraints don’t allow you the luxury of sitting and reading, listening on the go is an option.

One of the many aspects of The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store that I found satisfying was that it is a novel that makes one think as well as feel. And I love that about our prestigious Scholars Speakers Series as well. Take a look at these wonderful talks underwritten with a prestigious grant from Florida Humanities,

with funds from the National culture to learn about, in Florida Endowment for the Humanities. since the 18th century. In honor of our 50th Anniversary, we are offering a dozen programs See you at the library! that conclude in May. This month’s offering is Seminole Portraits: Reflections Across Time with Annette B. Fromm, Ph.D., held February 28 at the Southwest BROWARD COUNTY Regional Library. What a great LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Sincerely,

Allison Grubbs

cover story Broward County Library (BCL) has always been a diverse, multicultural institution. All cultures, races, and nationalities are represented in the staff and leadership, making us that much stronger and more relatable to the people we serve. The cover of this issue of Library Magazine honors three pioneering African American leaders from BCL’s 50-year history. In addition to being outstanding library leaders, Samuel F. Morrison, Tyrone Bryant and Julie Varner Hunter were vigorous proponents of human rights and active in the Civil Rights Movement. Their commitment to social justice remains a part of the fabric of BCL and an enduring aspect of their legacies. SAMUEL F. MORRISON joined BCL in 1974 as assistant director and served as deputy director from 1976-1987, when BCL grew from two branches to 25 branches. Following a directorship in the Chicago Public Library’s Harold Washington Library Center, he returned to BCL as director and worked in that position until his retirement in 2003. Under his leadership, BCL was awarded Library of the Year in 1996 and grew to 38 branches. During his tenure as director, Mr. Morrison envisioned, fundraised and established the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC), presiding over its grand opening in October 2002. He remains an active and beloved supporter of BCL and AARLCC.

TYRONE BRYANT (d.1988) served as BCL assistant director for special services and as the head of its Library-in-Action program, an outreach service for minority neighborhoods, which Mr. Bryant established in Broward County in 1976. By his efforts in galvanizing the community and convincing residents to use federal funds for libraries, Library-In-Action branches were created in Collier City, Carver Ranches, Rock Island, Dania and at the Von D. Mizell Multi-Purpose Center in Fort Lauderdale. Mr. Bryant added the Homework Assistance Program, bookmobile and books-bymail projects as well as the “Footmobile” service where Mr. Bryant and his staff went door-to-door promoting the library, delivering books and campaigning for literacy.

JULIE VARNER HUNTER (d. 2022) came to BCL in 2002 to serve as executive director of the newly opened African American Research Library and Cultural Center. Among her achievements there were coordinating the Ashley Bryan Art Series Conference and the acquisition of archival collections such as the Esther Rolle Collection in 2005. Ms. Hunter went on to become BCL’s Associate Director for Public Service; she was promoted to BCL Associate Director in 2007 and then to BCL Assistant Library Director, a post she occupied until her retirement in 2013. Ms. Hunter received the Florida Library Association’s 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of her many accomplishments as a 47-year esteemed library professional.
