Celebrating

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE This month, it’s my honor to come to you as Broward County Library’s new Division Director. As we move forward together, I am dreaming big dreams for this library system to be a dynamic place that will amaze, delight and make a profound difference in the lives of our customers. It’s a natural desire to want to contribute to the public good. We all hope to change things for the better, perhaps make a contribution to the well-being of humanity. Despite our best intentions, it is unlikely that one person could be the key to revolutionize cancer and AIDS research, defeat polio, ignite the space program and alter scientific exploration for decades. Well, the true story of tobacco farmer Henrietta Lacks shows us otherwise. And part of her amazing saga is that Henrietta lived and died without ever knowing her impact. I don’t want to give too much away, because I can’t wait to talk with you personally about one of my favorite nonfiction books, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I’m excited to get together with you on this book at the Director’s Book Club meeting in September and October with this non-fiction blockbuster as our first selection. You are invited to join me online in September, and in person in October at the Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs, the West Regional Library in Plantation and the Hollywood Library to compare notes about this book. The library has materials in multiple formats, so you can read, listen or watch the movie featuring Oprah Winfrey. Since1996, October 11th has been Henrietta Lacks Day, making this a perfect moment to focus on her. Another item of big news from me is that as part of Broward County Library’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in September and October, we will host Don Miguel Ruiz, internationally known spiritual teacher, for live, interactive, online discussions of his new books, The Actor and Eros. Don Miguel Ruiz is a bestselling author who inhabits many worlds and is also intent on changing this one – at least from an interior perspective. The library owns his work in multiple formats for you to check out or download, and explore his interpretation of the indigenous ancient wisdom of Mexico. Don Miguel will be speaking with us on two consecutive days so that the program can be presented in Spanish and English: Conversación con Don Miguel Ruiz (in Spanish) on Thursday, September 16th and Conversation with Don Miguel Ruiz (in English) on Friday, September 17th. Allow me to add one more piece of news. For those who haven’t yet heard…the library added another open day to a dozen branches! We listened when you asked for more hours and weekends, and we responded. So come on in, and let’s talk about books and personal transformation.

It’s Back!
