Introducing B

OCTOBER 2021

County Libraries new director Allison Grubbs roward

INSIDE THIS MONTH n Science Fair 2021 n Halloween Happenings n Director’s Book Club

D irector’s

MESSAGE

This October is a vibrant time for libraries, as we plunge further into Hispanic Heritage Month, and reposition ourselves for in-person programming. I cannot tell you how excited we are to see you again, live and face-toface, for crafts, seminars, entertainment, and of course, book discussions. Personally, I am super excited that my own Director’s Book Club is one of the events that allow us to meet and spend time together this month. We are off and running with an astonishing non-fiction book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I am looking forward to hearing what you think about it. I’m not the only person who’ll be delighted to meet you when you show up at the library. Have you made friends with the Friends? Among other things, these stellar library volunteers raise money at Book Fairs to sponsor special guests and events at your local branch. It’s National Friends of Libraries Week during October 17-31, but we are grateful for our crew every day of the year. Join right now and become a star yourself! Now that I’ve asked you to do something, let me tell what you can expect of me. My philosophy is always be grateful but never be satisfied. I am always looking for ways to upgrade, expand, increase, improve what the library brings to you. An example is the recent addition of the Wall Street Journal,

New York Times and Washington Post to the online publications we offer free. The list was impressive before we added these iconic papers – now it’s outstanding! Another example: adding an extra open day to a dozen branches. It’s fair to say you can be on the lookout for service improvements. A key aspect of my directorship is that I will always be working for you, albeit behind the scenes.

Sincerely,

Allison Grubbs BROWARD COUNTY LIBRARY DIRECTOR

It’s Back!

DIRECTOR’S MAY I SHARE WITH YOU HOW I DO THINGS?

Working My Way Being a library director who welcomes you to visit, get active, join our groups is a reflection of my personality and my outlook. Basically, I like people and care about the job I do. I have loved books and libraries all my life and now I’m in a position to share that with people who don’t know what they’re missing! If that means leaving my office to come out and play – I’m all in. Let’s dive into a great book. Suggestions, anyone?

BOOK CLUB THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS BY REBECCA SKLOOT

Lacks was an African-American woman whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line and one of the most important cell lines in medical research.

For me, it means everything to connect with the community. I intend to make our libraries the places you bring your friends. Come for a good time, come to learn, come to start a business, come to meet new people. Sure, we have curbside service…but why not come in and stay a while? The way I prefer to do things is collaboratively. So, yes, I am very interested in hearing your thoughts and the books you’d like to have in our collection and in my Director’s Book Club. I definitely have my favorites, some for being an addictive read and others for their message. The core values I believe in are important to me. Topping the list of ideals I stand for is commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. This is everybody’s library and everyone is welcome here. Each of us deserve a quality experience on every interaction with Broward County Library. “Our best, nothing less” is a slogan we have gone by for years and that is the standard of my staff without regard to whom the customer is. At the library, we honor and value everyone and you may hold me to that.
