Libraries show us anything is possible by encouraging a love of learning, discovery and exploration.

NATALIE PORTMAN, National Library Week Honorary Chair

INTERIM DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Broward County Library Customers: My favorite holiday is September 19, International Talk Like a Pirate Day, but my favorite week comes in April, when we celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians during National Library Week. There’s an interesting, funny story behind how that observance started. Everyone knows how technology-forward Broward County Library is. We are leaders when it comes to checking out tablets, internet hotspots, video games, providing digital downloadable resources, operating Creation Station makerspaces, offering 3D printing, virtual reality and MERGE cubes, free Wi-Fi, Amazon Echo translation technology, and so on – the list is a long one! It’s a given; the more tech, better. In the mid-1950s, ironically, the outlook was the reverse. Research showed that their new tech, television and radio, and even playing musical instruments, competed with time Americans would otherwise spend reading. To reverse this trend, in 1958 National Library Week was created by the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishers to motivate people to read and support their local libraries.

For us, technology and reading is not an either/or. Just for Teens/Maker Fun................................ 19 I invite you to do both – and play musical instruments Ready for College............................................... 19 with us as well. Pick up a ukulele and take free lessons with us. Zumba, yoga, dance, attend concerts – we offer it all, along with books in print, on CD, and in Braille format. And let’s not forget the wide range of digital music, movies and magazines that the library makes available free. That’s why I love the theme for National Library Week 2021: “Welcome to Your Library.” My staff and I invite and welcome you to visit our 38 branches to browse or simply pick up reserved materials. Did you know that even though we are open we continue to offer curbside service? We are happy to serve you in person in every way imaginable: at the circulation desk, at the reference desk, on the telephone or coming out to your vehicle. We also welcome you to attend online events – almost all of our programs are virtual. Find them on the library’s website homepage, or “Events” link, or consult the online calendar, or read about them in our weekly email or in this issue of our monthly Library Magazine. Simply register and enjoy from your comfort zone – it’s that easy! Our staff is available if you need assistance with online events or questions of any kind. National Library Week is April 4 - 10. Speaking for all of us at Broward County Library, we are excited to serve you every day of the year. I welcome you personally, and invite you to bring your friends – everyone is welcome!

Sincerely,

Allison Grubbs

The Sun-Tattler

Digitization Project

SCANNING IN THE SUN-TATTLER

Broward County Library preserves South Florida history As the Broward County Libraries Division deals with the long-standing challenge of how to both preserve and provide improved access to historic newspapers, it has taken an ambitious approach. A dedicated team of highly trained technicians are in the process of digitizing the local Sun-Tattler newspaper to make it both searchable and browsable. The SunTattler newspaper was established in 1935 as the Hollywood Sun. It was combined with the South Broward Tattler in 1942, when it adopted the Hollywood Sun-Tattler name it would use for most of its history. The Sun Tattler was sold SUN-TATTLER COMIC STRIP to the Dallas Times Herald in 1989 before it folded in 1991. To date, we have created a digital reproduction and processed more than a hundred thousand pages. The goal of the digitization team is to concentrate on making the entire run of the SunTattler (1935-1989) available and to bring historical research to life for both librarians and researchers.
