What do they do? Led by university students, this program enhances mathematical skills while working in a collaborative, hands-on environment. Students progress through fun structured sessions in a small group setting. Each season focuses on one grade level; older or younger students are welcome. • Learn math from a balanced mixture of open-ended questions, real-world problems, practice calculations, games, and projects • Use graphs, physical objects, and other visuals to learn and express their thinking • Work with all five strands of math per season: Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Patterning and Algebra, Data Management and Probability, with an emphasis on Number Sense and Numeration • Work individually and in small teams in a supportive environment

What will they learn? • Grade appropriate content based on the Ontario elementary Mathematics curriculum • The meaning behind math concepts (e.g. how does division really work?) • Problem solving strategies

What do they do? This hands-on program will include a flurry of building, programming, testing and problem solving with robotics technologies. Each week students progress through skill building lessons and challenging tasks. • Build with LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robotics kits (grades 3 - 8) or use Arduino hardware and 3D printed components (grades 9 - 12) • Engineer solutions to design challenges like navigating a maze, sensing the environment, and performing tasks like climbing stairs • Use sensors like touch, sound, temperature, light, distance (grades 3 - 8); motion, and others (grades 9 - 12) to create a complex robot • Work in small teams in a supportive environment

What will they learn? • Computer programming concepts: loops, sequence, parallelism, events, conditionals (grades 3 - 8); operators, and variables (grades 9 - 12) • Electronic circuits and hardware components (grades 9 - 12) • Problem solving and collaboration skills

Summer 2018 Grades 9 - 12 Tuesdays July 10 - Aug. 28 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. $200 per 8 week session

What do they do? This hands-on and creative program will guide students as they learn about 3D design technology. Each week students start or continue a fun project that they will take home. Projects are made with everyday materials, Makerbot 3D printers in PLA plastic, and the Carvey 3D CNC cutting machine in wood. • Use Tinkercad 3D design software to create digital components like custom fidget spinners, useful everyday objects (grades 3 - 8); and complex interlocking parts (grades 9 - 12) • Use equipment to scan real world objects into 3D, edit, and re-create them • 3D print their projects and take them home • Use Inventables’ Easel software to design wooden projects like custom signs, 3D objects like boxes, and other creations

What will they learn? • How to create and manipulate objects in 3D • The complete 3D printing and cutting process • Geometric concepts like line, face, vertex, angle, rotation • Spatial reasoning and trial-and-error skills
