Money matters Undergraduate co-op students are required to complete a minimum of three four-month co-op work terms to graduate with the co-op degree, along withthe mandatory professional preparation course.

Remuneration for Your Work Term Typically, work terms are paid employment experiences. The remuneration that you receive will depend on a variety of factors, including: • Your level of relevant experience • Your year and program of study • The type, size and location of the organization you are working for For a detailed salary survey by program, please visit brocku.ca/co-op

Administrative fees* The Co-op Education Office manages the administration and facilitation of the co-op experience at Brock. In addition to academic tuition, students are assessed administrative fees for the Co-op Program. Universities offering co-op programs incur significant costs related directly to operating the program which is not covered by government operating grants. It is important to understand that the administrative fee is not a placement fee, but rather relates to all the non-academic costs of operating co-op programs.

“ Advice for future co-op students would be to start early and network. If you have an idea of where you want to work, make time to visit them and get to know what they do. The connection will mean they know some of you before the application process. Applying earlier in the term would be beneficial and remove unnecessary stress by putting it off until the last two months, like I did.”

“ Participation in workshops such as networking events and panel discussions helped a great deal because I learned how to interact with future employers whether it be during an interview or working on the job officially. I recall very clearly a panelist that discussed how important it is to come into an interview with questions prepared and I have carried that into work with me when I began my first shift, and it has proven to be quite beneficial.”

“ The Brock University Co-op program has allowed me to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace. While working as a Data Scientist for the Ministry of Transportation, I have been exposed to a range of projects, allowing me to develop new technical skills. 0N90 has provided me with valuable job search knowledge that helped me to secure my first co-op term with such a great employer. Overall, I am thrilled with the co-op experience I have had so far, and am looking forward to my future placements and the opportunities they will bring.”

“The co-op program has allowed me to develop myself as a person and build a professional network to set me up for success in the workforce. I achieved a high level of academic performance, and recognition on the Dean’s Honours List in all three years already completed. My experience in RBC Amplify in my last coop term was the most challenging, but also the most rewarding experience of my life. Being able to get into such a competitive program, but then also to win in the program, was an incredible experience for which I am very grateful. This has allowed me to secure full-time work following graduation. I hope that my co-op and academic accomplishments can be leveraged to make Brock University–and Brock’s Co-op program in particular–even more widely recognized.”

“My Brock Co-op experience was the most valuable takeaway from my Biotechnology degree at Brock. With the help of Brock’s Co-op staff, I was able to find placements that provided me with relevant hands on experience in laboratories which I would not have been exposed to in a teaching laboratory, and I was also provided with experiences that allowed me to grow my network with potential employers for after graduation.”

“ Co-op is a very useful opportunity because you are put in different situations where you are learning and becoming familiar with the industry. At the same time, you are still ‘allowed’ or even ‘expected’ to ask questions and make mistakes. Your employer does not expect you to come into your first work term and understand every concept and what every aspect of the industry is all about. You are encouraged to ask questions in order to grow, learn, and progress through your career.”

“ Being in co-op has allowed me to learn about myself, refine my skills, and begin down a career path in a field I hadn’t considered before. Both of my work terms in communications roles gave me experience in social media management and content creation, writing and designing professional reports, and they gave me experience in professional settings that would have never been available to me otherwise. Additionally, the co-op office’s various offerings, including networking events, resume reviews, and mock job interviews, provided me invaluable professional development opportunities that set me up for success.”

“ Seeing the different jobs available helped me to realize how much I liked working in an environmental setting and to figure out which master’s program I would need to complete to make that possible. “ Co-op has given me real-life work experience in a firm that I can build a career in. Co-op gives students opportunities that hard to find on your own. For example, a co-op at a big 4 accounting firm is difficult to get out of school with no experience and you start at the bottom as opposed to having experience under your belt and then starting at a firm. Co-op gives you an advantage that you understand the industry. I know that there are many summer opportunities for students and internships offered, but co-op is a foolproof way of solidifying a career.”
