Administrative fees*

The Co-op Education Office manages the administration and facilitation of the co-op experience at Brock. In addition to academic tuition, students are assessed administrative fees for the Co-op Program. Universities offering co-op programs incur significant costs related directly to operating the program which is not covered by government operating grants. It is important to understand that the administrative fee is not a placement fee, but rather relates to all the non-academic costs of operating co-op programs. “My co-op experience was invaluable in helping me to secure my employment with the Government of Ontario. When searching for co-op positions, I would recommend trying to find a breadth of experience. Within each co-op term, try to find a job that differs from anything you have previously held. First, future employers will value your wide breadth of experience. You will be able to bring a lot of different skills and experience to the table, have contacts and references in different fields, and can demonstrate during an interview that you are able to adapt to various situations. On top of this, it will give you a better idea of what type of job you are interested in for your future career. You won’t have a clear idea of what you like and dislike, until you have tried different positions, and co-op is the best time to do this.”

“I gained relevant working experience as well as networking opportunities which are very valuable for my next career move. During my co-op at RBC (Royal Bank of Canada), I was given the opportunity to better understand different business lines in the banking system, and network with professionals across different business functions, which allowed me to know where my skills and experience fit best for the full-time position.

This is a great opportunity to experience the industry I am interested in working in. Co-op is designed as a learning experience, so this comparative advantage allows me to get more feedback and assistance when I show interest in learning what other teams are doing.”

“My Co-op experience has equipped me with critical tools to be more confident in the workplace and grow professionally. I have made meaningful connections and have had the opportunity to work on projects that have allowed me to expand my skillset. The most beneficial aspects of Co-op are the opportunities to gain hands-on experience directly related to your field of interest and the ability to meet new people and expand your network.”

“I advise to keep a regular communication with your talent advisor, they help a lot, and it can just be a short conversation. Regular meetings help to build confidence for interviews and their comments helped to improve the way I form future interview answers. I found that the point of meeting every other week with my co-op team benefited me in getting the most updated job postings and opportunities. My talent advisor helped review my resume and cover letter to match the high expectancies of employers and to better help showcase my skills and what I have learned.”

“The co-op program helped me gain my first Canadian work experience before graduation, which enabled me to better understand the Canadian working environment, as well as laid a good foundation for my career. The Co-op training sessions improved the quality of my resume and interview skills a lot via detailed feedback and mock interviews from co-op advisors. I’d highly recommend Brock’s co-op program to you. It is a great start to your career!”

“My experience of working in a co-op has been a very valuable and learning step in undergoing a new work culture environment. The co-op term has given me the platform to prepare myself and learn in a real-life office scenario. It has given me the confidence to interact with anyone without any hesitation and complete my tasks efficiently.

The co-op work terms help students to prepare for future full-time job roles. This work term is like a career-launching platform from where you can have a work experience in a short brief of what lies ahead of us. Hence, try and make most of the work term experience, as this is not only a job role you have to fulfill but you can also learn in real-life work scenarios with proper guidance and help from supervisors.”
