ALUMNI FEATURE: Briane Veale BPhEd, BEd, ‘14 Briane is a graduate of the Concurrent Education program with a teachable in Physical Education. During her time at Brock, Briane played for five years on the varsity women’s hockey team. After graduating from the program, Briane now operates her own female hockey academy based in Sault Ste. Marie that caters to female athletes of all ages and skill levels throughout Northern Ontario and Northern Michigan. Briane is also the head coach of the Sault College women’s hockey team.

Playing varsity sports really opened a lot of doors for me after graduation. When it comes to employers looking for someone that has good time management skills, has the ability to work in a team setting, and has the interest in taking on leadership positions – those are all things I was able to learn while playing a competitive sport and getting a degree at the same time. It was a lot of work at times, but I still wouldn’t trade it for anything! You also get to know athletes on all of Brock’s varsity teams, and you would all support each other. If you knew someone from another team was away for a game and they needed a copy of the lecture notes they missed, you would help them out to make sure that they got everything they needed. And if you were injured and you were hanging out in the athletic therapy room, we would support one another regardless of our respective sports; so it really made my Brock experience feel so much more like home.

Shawn Williams

BPhEd, ’99

Fitriya is the founder and executive director of the Muslim Women’s Summer Basketball League. She is also a basketball ambassador for Hijabi Ballers, and was recently named a change maker by Nike, the Toronto Star, and the CBC, for her efforts to engage Muslim women in sport.

Shawn was a member of the varsity men’s lacrosse team from 1995 - 1999, and is the all-time leading scorer for the Badgers. In 2009, he was inducted into the Brock Badgers Hall of Fame.

In his five seasons with Brock, Shawn was a five-time Team MVP, four-time Baggataway Cup Champion as a player, and two-time Baggataway Cup Champion as a coach. He represented Canada at five World Championships, helping to secure three first place finishes. He then went on to play in the National Lacrosse League, where he became a two-time league champion and a six-time All-Star. He was inducted to the NLL’s Hall of Fame as a first ballot nominee in 2021.

Knowing that my work is creating space for women in sport, and that I am amongst the next generation of athletes is truly rewarding in so many ways. After graduating from the Sport Management program, I would definitely say I got the confidence to start the Muslim Women’s Summer Basketball League because I understood how sport organizations, and all of the little components that go into sport organizations are actually run.

Most recently, he has been named as the General Manager and Head Coach of the NLL’s newest franchise, the Las Vegas Desert Dogs.
