Welcome to the first edition of Gold Coast Wedding Weekly. A whirlwind of emotions is what I experienced these last few months since I’ve joined the Wedding Weekly team. I faced new challenges everyday but also got to meet some lovely Gold Coast vendors who encouraged me along the way! I always wanted to work for a magazine, never thought it would be here on the Gold Coast of Australia. No better place in the world I guess, I feel fortunate to have this great opportunity. My aim is to provide you with an inspirational platform for you to plan your wedding. To help make this journey as easy as possible, I have put together lots of information on local products and services. I hope that Gold Coast Wedding Weekly will become your constant companion throughout the months of planning your wedding. So this issue we paid a visit to Summergrove Estate, rich in beautiful nature and picturesque views. Vendors pulled together our version of a current wedding trend; an affair with a touch of glitter to glam things up. As this is also the start for us, we decided to begin with some simple trends for the new wedding season and topped it off with the spotlight on choosing your wedding location. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wedding professionals who joined in, advertised and added their creative touch to this edition. Be sure to always tune in online and visit our blog for some ongoing wedding inspiration between issues. Finally, I would like to wish every couple the best of luck with your planning journey and happiness for your marriage to follow.

Love, Nadia xo 4

g n i d d e W s d n e r T s s e r D As little girls we always dreamt about our special day and the big “poofy” white dress that we would like to wear. As we get older and become more trendy and feminine we develop our own style and then, for some, if not most of us choosing the perfect dress becomes more like a nightmare, as opposed to a dream. That’s why I love that the wedding dress market has exploded over the last few years! Yes, too many options might leave you in the dark with what you’re after, but at the same time…these days there is literally a dress to suit every single one of us. Whether you choose your dress according to your own style, to match your wed-ding style, to satisfy your groom or mum, or you choose it because you love the design and details…it doesn’t really matter. As long as you feel comfortable walking down the isle in your dress and have confidence in your decisions you will definitely wow the crowd! I would like to think that there are no wrongs when choosing a dress but if you are a trendy bride who likes fashion as much as I do, here’s what’s in stall for the season ahead. New necklines, unique fabrics, different prints and colours, each season present it’s own trending cutting edge designs. From detachable tulle overskirts to charming capes for the colder seasons, check out the exciting new trends for this wedding season.

Add on a Tulle Skirt If you don’t have a budget for wearing two different dress-es on your wedding day but always wanted too, now is your chance to do a cheaper version and still have the same outcome! We adore the new detachable tulle overskirts. Match it with almost any other formal design and create a whole different look in an instant.

BHLDN

The Cape Whether you want to cover up or create some extra drama to your look, the cape is another convertible option. They come in all different shapes and sizes, some are longer and others have more detail, if you are looking to add something to a simple gown. It is a gorgeous new wedding accessory that we would love to see more.

The Babushka Ballerina

Ellie Saab

Soft Pastel Colours The last few years more and more coloured wedding dresses have been seen on the runways and even in real weddings with some gutsy brides giving the trend a go. Blush pink was very evident in the wedding scene this year, but lets say hello to shades of blue, grey and even light greens. We are so excited about this trend, it adds an uniqueness to your special day. 12

Off the shoulder necklines An open neckline that has fabric resting off the shoulders, or draped over the shoulders almost like a shawl. This neckline is ultra-romantic and classic. This cut allows the bride to show off her beautiful shoulders, arms and neck. Some of these designs are more Grecian-inspired with soft chiffon and tons of movement for the bohemian bride.

Pearl Bridal

Dresses with a collar The already popular trend of the higher neckline dress has reached another level. You will now see more brides opting for a collar to create a regal look. The collar, in some instances, accompanies a longer sleeved dress and is the perfect look for a winter brides.

Marchesa

Thirties Glam

Anna Campbell

Pop over to page ‌ to see how we used this trend in our styled shoot. Slim and sparkly dresses have made their way time and again the runway this year. It provides brides with an opportunity to look more elegant and also stand out with a bit of bling. Beaded details on wedding dresses have been add-ed to designs for decades but this year it will reach a whole new level! SUBSCRIBE | www.goldcoastweddingweekly.com.au

y t u a e B s d n e Tr Why not try?

Brides tend to spend a lot of time on every bit of detail for their wedding day but often forget about the beauty department. Your hair and makeup are possibly the most important part of completing your bridal look, but don’t forget about your bridesmaid’s looks too.

You don’t need to go over the top in the beauty department but think about it as something you would choose to enhance your natural features. If you aren’t sure what you would like, talk to your makeup art-ist and hairstylist about what look they think will suit you. We always recom-mend hiring a professional and talking with the experts!

As ‘done’ as it might sound beautiful braids are always an option. There are mil-lions of ways that you can style a braid while keeping your look unique. One long braid down the back or woven into a crown as an up style, you can create any look to suit your dress style. Messy braids are very on trend and are feminine, romantic and also boho chic. The statement lip isn’t going anywhere fast and we love it when brides are bold enough to add a bright lippy to their day. Some brides only go for this bold move when they change into their reception dress. Try matching the bold lip with min-imal eye make-up to create the perfect look. Not for you? Then no need to waste any more time. The nude lip also made its appearance on the couture runway the last year and is equally as stunning as any colour. It will allow you to look beautiful without looking overdone Whether you choose a formal up-do or a messy bun, the chic top knots are still a bridal favourite. It can work well when a bride decides to do an extra classy up-do and then chooses wavy curls or something more laid back for her maids.

14

A few brides have given way to the over the top retro cat eye. It appeared into the beauty world when vintage made its way back and hasn’t left since. The cat eye lends a classic, retro vintage look and compliments those beautiful bridal beauty shots your photographer will take. It creates a flair of drama to your bridal look and one people won’t forget.

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCATIONS... Words by: Marina Ruyyssenaers, Evergreen Gardens Once you have found the one you want to spend the rest of your life with, it is time to take the next step, and share that joy and celebration with your family and friends. STYLE So what is your style? • Formal • Relaxed • Elegant • Glamorous • Rustic • Modern It is probably a combination of several, so that leads to the questions: Do I want to have my Ceremony and Reception separate or do I want to choose a location that combines both? Would a Hotel, Club, Golf Course, Restaurant, Beach, Park, suit my style? Maybe a Private Garden, Marquee, Boat or Paddock under the stars is more to my liking? Will the location allow me to style and decorate, to reflect the outcome I am looking for?

Boomerang Farm

Sheraton Mirrage Gold Coast SIZE The number of guests has a large influence on location choice. Some venues have a limit on the number of guests they are able to accommodate. Logistically it may be difficult to manage large numbers in remote locations. Small numbers may “get lost” in large churches or reception centres. Choose the size wedding that fits your budget and your style.

Boomerang Farm

BUDGET When considering your location, it is customary that 40-50% of your budget is allocated to venue & catering costs. Compare the cost if your ceremony is separate or included with a reception package. Look at everything that is included in a locations package eg: catering, styling, transport, service staff, and BYO options. For outdoor weddings always allow some extra dollars in the budget for a wet weather plan eg: marquee hire. 18

TRAVEL Travel is a huge factor when choosing the perfect location. • Do you need to travel far to find your ideal location?

The Glades

• Will your guests be coming from interstate or overseas? If so do they have transport to and from your location or should some be arranged for them? • Considering the day or time of your wedding, could there be parking or traffic issues? Summergrove Estate

• Does the location offer an easy access, disability option? • If the ceremony and reception are in separate locations, how are the guests going to get there?

Palmer Golf Course Chapel SERVICES It is a good idea to have a look at what services the venue is providing and what services they will allow. Be specific in understanding what is and isn’t included at your venue and if there are any special conditions. Ask for their recommendations - they know what has and hasn’t worked before. Will the location allow offsite suppliers eg: Stylists, Florists, Musicians, Lighting? Is there catering on site and do they provide a complete service including staff? In the case of a garden, beach or remote location, are the site facilities suitable? What time frame does the location operate? Look at the reviews and testimonials that the location may have received. This is a great way to pick the brain of the road already travelled.

Made With Love Tell us a little about your background? I am originally from South Africa and come from a large family with 5 siblings! We immigrated to this beautiful country 13 years ago and I just LOVE Australia. I am a twin and have always been the ‘arty’ one in the family. I always used to dress both my twin and I from when we were about 3 years old and have always loved fashion. We are a very close family and I consider myself very blessed to have such amazing parents and siblings. It was never quiet in our house and I honestly just love coming from such a big family! I studied marketing and business at Bond University and have experience in marketing, sales, advertising and events. The experience I gained from my previous job helped me shape & mould MWL into what it is today. How did you get into the wedding game? Joshy proposed to me last year February and I 22

was excited to plan our wedding as I was used to planning big events and knew what work it would involve. I always knew the style and look I was going to go for. When the time came to look for wedding dresses with Mum, I guess I wasn’t prepared for what was in store for me. We went to at least five wedding dress shops and I remember feeling very disheartened, mainly because every dress looked the same to me and they were all so expensive. So that’s when I thought I am going to design my own dress! Before I knew it, I had designed a whole collection of dresses and MWL was born! I was still working at my old job when MWL was launched and within two months I had to resign and focus purely on MWL Talk us through a typical day at Made With Love? We have a home boutique on the Gold Coast and Sydney so Kelly (my sister and business partner) are lucky enough to work from home. We check our emails first thing in the morning and reply to

all our brides. We dedicate three full days to just wrap wedding dresses/products from MWL. Our wrapping and letters are very personal so each one takes time. My Mum is very involved with the head and foot pieces and belts so we make them together. I organise the photoshoots (best part of the job!) – there is always lots of planning involved but I just love choosing the model, photographer, location, accessories etc! Maintaining our website is a big part of my day, always trying to include new content and uploading the latest photos. We’re very active on Social Media - especially Instagram and Facebook - and we use these tools to meet lots of gorgeous Brides. Oh, and we’re always at the Post Office - at least once a day! We don’t work 9am-5pm, we are constantly working and in communication with our brides. We always want them to feel safe with their online experience and will always go out of our way for each of our brides! After designing a dress, I am constantly involved at each stage of the making of the dress until it comes to life! What is your favourite Made With Love dress and why? At the moment… my favourite dress is Savannah. I find her so romantic, feminine and just beautiful. If you ask me this again in a few weeks I am sure I have chosen another one of my dresses!! The Carla dress will always mean so much to me as that’s the one I designed for my wedding! Do you have a favourite Gold Coast venue? Yes! I love Boomerang Farm! Mainly because I got married there but it is honestly one of the most beautiful venues on the Gold Coast! Boomerang Farm has so much personality and is just breathtakingly beautiful! What is it that you enjoy about meeting brides

and helping them to choose their perfect dress? I love meeting Brides, mainly to find out the look they are after and what they visualize wearing on their wedding day. By the end of our appointment I feel like I’ve made a new friend! We have a full hour of getting to know each other and I always want them to be totally in love with their dress. I have a pretty amazing job! Tell us about your favourite design that you enjoyed creating? I would have to say the Carla dress. I designed this for my wedding, I wanted; simple, elegant and just classic and I really believe this is the Carla dress. The lace is so delicate on the bodice and her 30D chiffon is so wispy flowy and soft, I felt like I was floating in her. I definitely LOVED designing the Carla dress! Any advice for bride’s to be when it comes to choosing their wedding dress? Yes, choose a wedding dress that you will still love in 30 years’ time. Don’t go with the fashion, go with what suits your look and body shape. Choose the wedding dress that you literally cannot stop thinking about! As a wife, what would you consider the best advice would be for a newlywed couple? Always put your husband first. Dedicate a date night once a week where there are no phones, TV, any distractions. Just you two and really enjoy each other’s company! Veil or flower crown? Right now? Veil! (Can I say both?!)

Meg & Kevin How did he propose? During a weekend away to Melbourne he booked a surprise dinner and trip to the theatre! He proposed back at the Stamford Plaza after an amazing night. Do you have a theme for your wedding in mind? What about colours? Elegant romance -‐ Greyed jade, blush pinks and whites and greys. Where will you be looking for your wedding dress? We have been engaged for a while now, so I have already purchased my dress from the talented Mariana Hardwick in Melbourne. Honeymoon Ideas? A cruise around New Zealand. Who was your photographer? Our engagement shoot was by Martinia O’Sullivan at Life, Love & Light Images. 62

Teresa & Paul How did he propose? Paul had organised for my friend Cherie to invite me out for dinner one evening. When I got there, she told me she was returning a favour I’d done for her and in-sisted I where a blindfold because it was a surprise. She drove me around and managed to completely disorientate me by circling a parking lot with lots of speed bumps! Unbeknown to me we eventually ended up at Paul’s house where he had rearranged his whole lounge room and decorated it with candles, floating lanterns and flowers. I still had no idea where I was until Paul removed my blind-fold. I starting crying as soon as I saw him. It all clicked that he was behind this and I knew that this was ‘the moment’. He crouched down to put slippers on my feet so that I would feel at home (a detail that still melts my heart). He got down on both knees and asked me to marry him. Then he walked me over to a long and elegant table where he and his sister Jenny had prepared a 3 course meal with all my favourite food on there. It was a lovely and intimate evening. Do you have a theme for your wedding in mind? What about colours? Our wedding was in Spring so we wanted our wedding to reflect this beautiful season. We decided to base our theme around Spring and a light lemon yellow colour. We wanted our wedding to symbolise our personalities, which was fun, intimate and genuine. I really enjoy craft and being creative, so I DIY’d a lot of the decorations with some help from friends and family. My mum and I spent 12 hours baking and decorating gingerbread men cookies that had each of our guests’ names on them!

The Proposal? Rico took the opportunity on a family cruise to New Zealand to pop the question which was so special. It was definitely unexpected for me and he did so well keeping it a secret for so long. It was the best holiday ever

68

Funny moment? Rico had been planning the proposal for almost 12 months which included getting my engagement ring made. He decided the best place to store it while on the cruise would be with my grandparents in their room so they kept it in a band aid box and inside their safe. The whole trip they were apparently saying to each other “how are the band aids?” or “the band aids are still good!” which I totally did not pick up on. I think it was so special that my grandparents played a role in the proposal. He did end up getting the ring made 5 sizes too big though! So we ended up using about 10 band aids and wrapped them around the bottom of the ring so I could still wear it because there was no way I wasn’t wearing it!

Meaningful and memorable moment? Walking down the aisle to Mitch was the best for me… Mitch lost it when our eldest daughter, Bahli carried our baby boy, Kaylan down the aisle. Our Ring Bearer was our little nephew, Jack Lenehan, who was wheeled along the sand in a specialised beach wheelchair. He really pulled at my heart strings, and having my sister’s walk me down with my Father & Step-Father in both arms...What an experience! Aside from those close moments during the ceremony, one thing that will stick in our minds is the three part rap song written and performed throughout the reception by our MC’s Chris and Andrew summarising our relationship from start to present day in a hilarious way!

The Proposal? We were at home having a normal week night dinner. Wayne was acting really strange. I had just got back from a month holiday back in Zimbabwe and he seemed on edge and fidgety. He played a song on the iPod and said listen to the words of this song. Thinking this was a little unusual I listened to the words of the song. He darted into the bedroom and came back into the lounge room with tears in his eyes. I asked him what was wrong and at that moment he got down onto one knee and presented me the most gorgeous engagement ring. I was in shock and began to cry. I of course said yes and the rest is history.

Advice for Brides To Be? Planning is the key, write a list and remember you can only do the best you can to make it all happen. I did a lot of DIY etc for the wedding myself, including my own invitations, website so that people could RSVP from overseas without having to post anything, my own centrepieces with mason jars and wine bottles, collected my own shells and decorated the tables with a rustic feel using hessian and rustic string. My mother in law also made our wedding cake, which was a three tier traditional fruit cake which we decorated in white fondant roses. This did not only save us money but I really enjoyed it. If you have the time take a moment to think about the things you can do on your own. It is the most incredible day, make sure you take a moment to take it all in and before you know it, it’s all over.

The proposal? About five years ago, David's brother got one of those giant kinder surprises, and I jokingly told him that "I would totally marry a boy with a giant kinder surprise", and even before were dating, he often joked about needing to get a giant kinder surprise. Three years ago, David saw me off at the airport when I went to Europe, and he brought me a kinder surprise with a little note that said "one day". When I got back, he brought me another one that said "be mine". New Years Eve 2012, David asked me to go to the beach in Surfers Paradise to watch the midnight fireworks. I wanted to go dancing with my friends, but agreed. We sat on a picnic blanket on the beach, and just before 12, he gave me a kinder surprise. The toy was a little plastic ring with a bumble bee on it. The instruction sheet was a drawing he had done of the two of us on the beach, with him on one knee proposing and fireworks in the background. I was so confused, trying to figure out how this drawing got into a sealed kinder surprise, and when I looked up, he was on one knee and had a real ring, and notes so he wouldn't stuff up his speech. It even had a reminder to “pause for tears, which was lucky, because there was plenty of them! 108
