It’s all in your hands until it isn’t. Essays, activities lists, test scores, resumes, portfolios, auditions, interviews, recommendation letters. Then you blink, it’s the end of January, and everything’s over but some (moderately) fat lady singing an aria at the end of the hallway. What makes one application rise to the top? How can you decide which college entrance test is better for you? How can you treat college apps like a real-life gaming challenge? Students in this course will analyze and write essays, research college requirements, pen heartfelt letters to mentors, and generally unlock the chest that reveals the key that opens that next door.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2020 Summersession A Comprehensive History of the Concepts and Principles in Modern Science Jasen Vita

Crash course: From the Mathematical Mystery School of Pythagoras to the Copehagen Interpretation, a comprehensive history of the concepts, ideas, and principles that underlie modern science. It’s a basic question: how did we get to where we are today? We wonder. Philosophically, we might start to ponder a further question: How did we come to know all the things we now fully comprehend about our world and the way our world works? If all history had managed to pass on were the grand thought systems deriving and formulating one metaphysical truth right after another, we would have little understanding even now about the way the physical world around us works. On the other hand, if all history had to give us were the theories and inferences of the “natural philosophers”, then we would understand very little about the way in which the people of the world have evolved in their thinking and in their use of language. In this class, we are going to go through and study the entire scope of the history of Western science. Obviously we will not be able to cover everything, but we will be able to walk the path of history from the time of the ancient Babylonians up until the present day. The history of science is rich with fascinating characters motivated by very deep obsessions to understand how man and how nature are oriented in relation to each other. Is man a symptom of nature? Or is the perception of nature just a false hallucination inside the mind of man? In this class we will be writing and reflecting, going through some basic readings, and watching a lot of documentaries. The history of science gives us a roadmap for understanding not just how its own disciplines progressed and advanced slowly but assuredly into the future, but how the mind, language, and overall consciousness of humans has also evolved.

Dates: Week 1 (6/1-6/5) Days: Monday thru Friday Hours: 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Grades: All are welcome Tuition: $550 Activity Fee: None Lunch: Bring money, bring lunch from home Minimum: 3 students Maximum: 10 students Full payment due by May 5 Please sign and submit this form, along with full payment, to Heidi at the admin desk to enroll. Photoshop Bootcamp (Weeks 1&3) Are you looking to take your drawings to the next level? Do you want to make sick memes? Are you looking to revamp branding for your YouTube or Twitch channel? You need Photoshop, and I’m here to help. In this class you will gain the fundamental skills necessary to create and edit your own photoshop projects. From the very basics to advanced painting techniques, this course walks you through the skills necessary to have complete visual control of your images. It is recommended that students have a graphic interface tablet for this class (Intuos, Da Vinci, Monoprice), but this is not a requirement for the course; paintings can be made utilizing a mouse or touchpad if necessary. Photoshop subscriptions are available at the computer desk without an additional charge. Narrative Design (Weeks 2) Stories are a cornerstone of human civilization, not to mention, they’re a lot of fun. But what makes a story matter? What makes characters memorable and worlds fantastic? This class will dissect what makes a good story great, and how design makes that happen in visual narrative media. For cartoonists, comic book artists, game designers, and cinema geeks, this course is a crash introduction, or excellent refresher, for how to make our stories look AND feel compelling. We will be investigating shape design, costume design, and world design, and how these elements tie together to create the universes we find so compelling.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2020 Summersession Running Alongside a Beam of Light: Einstein’s Trip into the Extraordinary Jasen Vita

Among the most famous names in science, one alone stands at the top — Albert Einstein. In 1905, his “miracle year,” he published four scientific papers that changed the world forever, and dramatically. In one, he presented a first formulation of the theory of special relativity. In another, he became the first scientist to experimentally demonstrate the physical existence of the atom based on an analysis of the Brownian motion of particles in a suspension. In a third paper, he established theoretically the possibility of the photoelectric effect. And in the fourth paper, he described the principle of massenergy equivalence in the equation E=MC2. He won the Nobel Prize for the work done in the third paper, when the photoelectric effect was eventually verified. In later years, Einstein went on to invent general relativity and became a tour de force in the continuing development, critique, and analysis of the forthcoming quantum theories. And yet, even in such greatness, it all began with neither a formal nor complete education in physics. Instead, it began by him staring out of the window of his job, as a patent clerk, imagining what it would be like to run alongside a beam of light. That’s how it happened. In this class, we will try to do the same thing. Namely, we will attempt to do what Einstein himself did that led him to create the groundbreaking theory of relativity — to imagine ourselves running along a beam of light. We will try to imagine what this would look like. Join me on this quest of the imagination and into the extraordinary mind of Albert Einstein — a man who was not concerned as much with elaborating new physics. Einstein wanted real knowledge about the truth of physical existence. He wanted to genuinely understand the most absolute, fundamental nature of physical reality, and the truths that lie therein.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2020 Summersession Sci-Fi & Fantasy Cinema Club Tyler Peck

If you love science fiction and fantasy films, then this summer session will be super fun! From “E.T.” to “Avatar,” we will be exploring how different generations have looked at these genres. This year we again will include films that also stray into the supernatural and horror genres yet are also considered sci-fi and fantasy. The days will be structured like a compare and contrast-style screening series workshop, featuring two films each day based around a particular theme (ex. time travel, alien invasion, etc.) followed by discussion, critique, and analysis of the pros and cons of each within the major categories of direction, writing, acting, cinematography, score, sound design, editing, production design, and VFX. How was each film distinctly similar and/or different compared to the other relative to the time in which it was conceived? One movie per day will focus on these genres in contemporary cinema, and the other will look at them in the context of past generations. Since sci-fi and fantasy were dominant film genres in the ‘80s, we will focus primarily on that era as our “past generation” (although we will open up to ‘70s and ‘90s films, too), whereas “contemporary cinema” will be anything after the year 2000, as it was a major turning point in technological and cinematic advancements. Here are just a few examples of films we may watch: “Let the Right One In,” “The Fifth Element,” “Clash of the Titans,” “The Dark Knight,” “Moon,” and “Another Earth.” Oh, and did I forget to mention that I will be providing both popcorn and movie candy every day for your moviegoing enjoyment (no cost)?! Let’s watch some great movies and learn about the art of film criticism along the way! {***For the films that we may watch that are rated R, parents will be emailed ahead of time to confirm that the film is acceptable for their child to watch.***}
