Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2018 Summersession Be a Hero: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Action, Superhero Photoshop Portrait Effects Patryce Harris

This fun weeklong session will focus on creating fantasy, action-pose portraits using Adobe Photoshop. We will start by choosing a portrait concept and creating the base art by photographing one another in strong, superhero-esque action and full-body poses, such as hands out to command fire or lightning, mid-air Matrix-style crab kicks, and power poses. Participants will then edit these photos, removing the real-life background to create a timeless backdrop upon which to build our special effects. Students choose from several preconceived styles, all of which have a kinetic, fantasy effect such as controlling the elements, explosions, particle shattering, epic smoke, and halo glows. Students independently decide whether to use costumes or not in their base photography of themselves, which we will shoot in the beginning of the week. For maximum educational benefit, DLSR, point-and-shoot, or high-quality cell phone cameras are preferred, but cameras are not mandatory, and each student will be photographed regardless. At the culmination of the course, each student will present and share their conceptual art with the class, and subsequently receive a professionally printed and mounted photo. Photo idea examples: • Holding lightning or fire • Ghosting • Superhero landing poses • Disintegrating or shattering Dates: June 4-8 Days: Monday through Friday Hours: 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Grades: All ages welcome Tuition: $550 per week Activity Fee: $35 Lunch: Bring money or lunch from home Minimum: 4 students Maximum: 8 students Full payment due by May 4 Please sign and submit this form, along with with full payment, to Heidi at the admin desk to enroll. Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join Us for the 2018 Summersession The Great Geocaching Adventure Ian Tindell

Did you know that there are more than 18,000 boxes of buried treasured hidden in and around Los Angeles? For the uninitiated, geocaching is a fun and safe GPS-enabled outdoor treasure hunt that has players find what other players themselves have hidden around the city. These hidden objects can be anything from buttons to trinkets to who knows what (but not money or gold coins—sorry, pirates!). Hiders are mischievous and sometimes despicably creative, crafting fake panels in street signs or painting a cache green and stashing it in the brush. Join us as we explore a different area of Los Angeles each day, locating as many of these hidden treasures as we can and allowing the adventure to take us where it will; just be prepared to go on a hike or two. After we get some experience hunting, we’ll add to our adventure by creating our own geocache with a trackable inside, allowing us to see where in the world our trackable might travel to as other geocachers discover it!

So if you would like to go back to the raw art of burning designs into things, then this is the class for you! During our week together we will learn about the different techniques involved in pyrography, as well as looking at how far these techniques can be pushed to create stunning pieces of art. Each student will receive a wood-burning pen kit to use for the week and take home after our class. Over the week we will complete several projects using our kits and different types of wood materials, i.e. plaques, frames, boxes, and so forth.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2018 Summersession Sci-Fi & Fantasy Cinema Club Tyler Peck

If you love science fiction and fantasy films, than this Summersession will be super fun! From E.T. to Avatar, we will be exploring how different generations have looked at the sci-fi & fantasy genres. The days will be structured like a compare and contrast-style screening series workshop. This means that we will watch two movies each day, which will be based around a particular theme (e.g. time travel, dystopian futures, etc.) and then discuss, critique and analyze the pros and cons of each. How were they distinctly similar and/or different from each other relative to the time in which they were conceived? One movie per day will thus focus on how contemporary cinema is presenting sci-fi and fantasy in film, and the other will instead look at how past generations have addressed those same genres. Since sci-fi and fantasy were such dominant film genres in the 1980s, we will be primarily focusing on that era as our “past generation;” whereas our “contemporary cinema” will be anything after the year 2000, as it was a major turning point in both technological and cinematic advancements. Here are just a few examples of the kinds of films we may watch: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Dark Knight, The Neverending Story, Minority Report, Another Earth, and Interstellar. Oh, and did I forget to mention that I will be providing both popcorn and movie candy every day for your movie-going enjoyment?! Let’s watch some great movies and learn about the art of film criticism along the way!

Dates: June 11-15 Days: Monday through Friday Hours: 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Grades: MS and HS; films that are rated R will be discussed with parents ahead of time Tuition: $550 per week Activity Fee: None Lunch: Bring money or lunch from home Minimum: 4 students Maximum: Unlimited Full payment due by May 4 Please sign and submit this form, along with with full payment, to Heidi at the admin desk to enroll. We will be contacting you at a later date for emergency information. Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2018 Summersession The Technological Legacy of Star Wars Jasen Vita

In late May 1977, an adventure film from a little-known director debuted. The film was a space odyssey called Star Wars, its director was George Lucas, and early critics expected it would absolutely bomb at the box office. Receiving indisputably the largest and most enthusiastic reception of any Hollywood feature released up to that point, Star Wars went far beyond the low expectations of its critics and transformed the movie industry and the way movies were made forever. In this weeklong course, we will take a hard look at the world George Lucas molded and the technologies he used and invented to create it. How precisely and in what ways did Star Wars change moviemaking and provide a platform for an entirely new range of visual effects and sound-design techniques to the moviemaking industry? How did Star Wars draw upon existing cinematic modelmaking technologies and expand them and their capabilities to make dogfights and battle scenes of fighters in space a possibility? What is meant by “practical effects, and how did Star Wars use them? These are the types of questions we will explore. This class will consist primarily of documentary film watching and analysis, followed by opportunities for the students to write their thoughts and ideas down based upon the materials we will have been investigating. In addition, we will watch a couple of the original films to observe how the technologies actually were implemented in the final cuts. This is a perfect class for Bridges students who are fans of Star Wars and for students who are interested in becoming filmmakers or working in the film industry.

Bridges Academy Information and Registration Form Join us for the 2018 Summersession Video Game Boot Camp Shane Brennan

Welcome to boot camp! By the end of the week your thumbs will hurt from smashing buttons, your throat will be sore from screaming as the N64 consistently glitches, and your mind will be blown by your own creative storyboards and video game portfolio. We will take a look at the long and storied history of video games and the role technology has played in their transformation. By looking at the change in advertising and growth of sales, and by playing games from different consoles, students will witness the dramatic growth video games have had in such a short period of time. This active and collaborative class allows students to flex their creative muscles by designing their own storyboards, characters, and artwork. By the end of the week, students will have completed a thorough video game idea, a collection of characters, and a portfolio of artwork to share amongst their friends.
