aimara was born in the golden city of Jaisalmer, India. It was created by photographer, Lesa van Rooyen, and is based on the ideals of freedom, creativity, passion and beauty. Kaimara is based in a gallery in Pretoria, but we love working internationally. The company comprises of three legs; photography, videography and events planning. We have put together a team of extremely talented and passionate people who flourish in their respective fields. Photography is not an exact science, so we do not follow a formula to get the shots. We work with what the couple

gives us, and shoot to capture them in such a way that their personality and style sets the scene. We want them to stay true to who they are when expressing the love that they share. Whether the couple wants something daring and elaborate, or classic and romantic, we are up for the challenge. We have enough confidence in our capabilities to give our couples the freedom to choose what they want to do. When filming, we try to make each video as unique as possible to suit the feel and setting the couple has chosen for the video. It is important for us to

make our couples feel at ease so we can capture the unstaged essence of their love. We make use of only the best equipment to get creative shots from interesting angles, to ensure high quality videos. We find great joy in making the impossible possible, which is why we love when couples come up with an original idea, and we get to rise to the challenge and create a piece of art. Our events focus on destination weddings with a difference. By our definition, a destination wedding is a wedding as you might know it, but it is set in a remote location not many have seen, let alone experienced. We embrace the enchantment of nature’s beauty, and couple it with the passion, love and magic that form part of a wedding day. Our destination weddings are for more adventurous couples that thrive on uniqueness and exclusivity. The world truly is our oyster!

We do cater for couples that have an established venue in mind by offering a bouquet of wedding planning services. With our comprehensive wedding planning package we walk you through it from start to finish. We are the bride and groom’s own personal assistant, so it really does take the load off of the stress and chaos that might arise from planning a wedding. For those brides who have a handle on things and only need assistance in some departments, we offer custom-built packages. We chat about what still needs to be done and determine the areas in which we can help to make sure all the loose ends are tied together for the big day to run smoothly. Some of the other things that fall under the events umbrella are dÊcor styling, engagement setups and special events planning. We are passionate about people, about love, and about the role we play in creating memories.

G

rande Provence Heritage Wine Estate wears her 300-year history with dignity. She sits in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley in South Africa’s Western Cape – her lush vines spread across 30 hectares, with gentle vistas over the valley floor, at odds almost with the rugged mountains beyond. This is heartland South African wine country. The honest simplicity of its Cape Dutch architecture in harmony with the precision and clarity of modern design brings a new pièce de résistance to the magnificent valley of Franschhoek. Framing the entry road are rows of vineyards, heavy with the promise of next year’s Cabernet. Here, one bears witness to the duality of old and new settling into an elegant co-existence; as mature trees take root amongst the 300-year old oaks and manicured hedges blend with the free form of the natural surroundings to create a landscaped Eden. Gracefully governing the setting is the 18th century Manor House, while The Owner’s Cottage and La Provençale welcome guests to boutique accommodation. The Owners Cottage offers guests four sumptuous rooms and a honeymoon suite that provides a quiet and intimate repose, while the tranquillity of the lake provides a restful escape for the soul. Added to the rejuvenation of the historic, is the originality of the new. Culinary excellence may be found in local fare prepared with passion, flavoured with global influences

and served with nouveau simplicity, an ethos mirrored in the modern but receptive setting of the Grande Provence Restaurant. Languid views of vineyards and mountains are invited in, as The Restaurant opens to create fluidity between the outdoors and in. During the summer months, grand old oaks provide a dappled canopy under which to savour the estate’s cultivars, while double volume doors welcome connoisseurs in from the cold to a striking, but comfortable, fire lit winetasting area.

New Wedding Options at Grande Provence The Estate proudly offers guests The Owner’s Cottage, La Provençale, The Restaurant, The Winery, The Jonkershuis, The Gallery, The Sculpture Garden and The Shop. Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate in Franschhoek, part of Huka Retreats, is proud to present its latest and unique wedding and honeymoon options available at this magnificent Estate for the year ahead. The wedding and ceremony can be created outdoors within the beautifully manicured gardens or indoors in the superbly decorated private room of The Jonkershuis watched over by the famous chandeliers made from recycled wine bottles. Alternatively, guests may choose the awardwining restaurant boasting superb cuisine by the renowned Executive Chef, Darren Badenhorst, who will co-create your very own signature menu,

influenced by the elegance and style of Grande Provence. This can be created for up to 60 guests in this venue. Further options available, especially for honeymooners, are romantic dinners in the candlelit wine cellar or next to your own private pool, or choose The Jonkershuis and during the summer months dine in the middle of the vineyards to fully immerse yourself in this majestic environment whilst enjoying the award-winning collection of wines paired with a signature menu. A truly unique option is to dine in The Gallery surrounded by the latest art exhibition. Due to its unparalleled location in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, set within 47-acres of pristine vineyards, Grande Provence offers an exceptional venue presenting areas rich in heritage and contemporary design. It is the ideal setting, with towering mountains as the backdrop for exceptional photography with endless photographic opportunities, indoors and out, to capture the special day. Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate is a sister property to Huka Lodge, New Zealand and Dolphin Island, Fiji (members of Relais & Châteaux), with all three exclusive properties comprising The Huka Retreats. What was most memorable to me: We found unspeakable beauty at Hartford House on a horse breeding farm just outside Mooi River. Summerhill Stud Farm is described as a place where you can lose yourself in all that inspires you. It is a country of great space, spectacular mountains and big skies. It is filled with traditional cultures and splendid style. It epitomised everything that Simon and I love. Every decision in respect of the style we bade to achieve for our wedding was based on this magnificent place. We wanted a warm, welcoming, but stylish atmosphere, with good food and comfortable conversation. Our dreams came true... I woke up the on morning of our wedding to the sound of heavy rain. At first I was devastated as most of the wedding was supposed to take place outside under the big autumn coloured trees surrounded by the quiet of horses grazing in the shade. It was clear that the cold wet weather had set in for a few days and our outdoor wedding dream would not be realised. Fortunately, before I could panic, my wonderful friends and family directed my attention to the warm atmosphere and beauty that the weather had created. The farm’s colours were brighter than ever. Every fire place was in full flame. It was simply stunning. Hartford House took care of all the arrangements and in a matter of minutes the wedding was moved indoors. When the quaint little chapel’s doors opened and I looked up into Simon’s tear filled eyes, it was as though we were all alone. The day couldn’t have been more perfect! As the day drew to an end and we settled in conversation with our friends and family, Brett Florens (our photographer) suddenly grabbed us, stuck us in his Land Rover and rushed to one of the paddocks where the horses were settling in for the night. The rain cleared for but a moment, revealing the most beautiful sunset. It was as though the horses knew how special this day was to us. They all started playing and running around us, resulting in the most incredible memories captured by spectacular photographs. Sep/Oct 2013 Brides Essence Magazine

Advice for future brides: We are often asked why our marriage will work; why is it different to so many others’? The simple answer is that getting married didn’t change our relationship. Our love and friendship remained the same. Only now we made a promise before God and declared to all our friends and family that when times are tough we will always work through it. Love, trust, faith and communication are the cornerstones from where we build our family. Photographs Supplied and taken by Brett Florens

What were your memorable moments on your special day? All the personal touches and effort our family and friends made in creating the day, truly made it all so meaningful. It poured with rain most of the Saturday, and although some Plan B’s had to be made, the rain and mist created a magical atmosphere with the autumn colours, cosy fireplaces and English-countryside feel of Walkersons and Dullstroom. I loved getting ready with my bridesmaids, laughing and chatting excitedly. Seeing Greg’s face and the emotions of my family and friends as I walked down the aisle was definitely a moment to remember. No sooner had the ceremony ended when the rain stopped and the most beautiful sunset backlit our photographs. Instead of having individual tables for our 87 guests, we were all seated at one long T-shaped banquet-style table. Sitting at the head of the table, clinking our champagne glasses and seeing everyone’s smiling faces, lit up by the beautiful candles and flower arrangements was also a special memory. The evening was filled with laughter, great food, cutting the cake, throwing the bouquet, tossing of the garter and dancing into the early hours. All our guests stayed at Walkersons or nearby. We all shared breakfast on Sunday morning, where once again we laughed and shared in the memories that made this happy occasion! What advice do you have for other brides getting married? ..don’t stress about the small things, enjoy every moment and don’t forget to breathe! This is your special day, so enjoy all the magic and celebration of the day!

What if you are on a very tight budget, can wedding planners work within your budget? A lot of wedding planners can accommodate small budget weddings. It is worth bearing in mind too that working with a competent and connected planner can often save you a whole lot of money too. I’ve worked with clients who have saved more than their entire wedding planning fee because of the discounts and options we were able to secure for them. Of course there are other options available to brides on a tight budget too, like the stand alone consultation discussed above.

oin me as we take a step back in time. Picture the Great Gatsby of the 1920’s, a time where luxury and opulence was at its peak; where parties were in full swing and extravagance overflowed. Now imagine that you could bring that ambience to your wedding in 2013 and have the biggest trend for this year. The vintage theme has continued into spring 2013 but brings along with it, the lavishness and the charm of the 1920’s. As you walk into your reception space the aroma of the abundance of flowers meets you and your guests with the sweetness of spring. Your vision comes to life with the use of feathers, pearls, fringe details and beads, blended in and amongst the volumes of flowers which are set in varying sized vessels filling the room in every available space. Luxury blooms, and still a huge favourite amongst our brides, are the Orchids, which will be spilling out of every vase. The trusted favourite, the classic rose, brings the vintage feel with the wide variety of colours available. Pastel colours have been a favourite for brides over the past few years

and is still colouring the scene. Living walls designed with flowers creates a beautiful backdrop for photographs and for guests to tie special notes onto for the bride and groom. Where last year the idea was to have that “just picked from the garden” feel, designs this year are more controlled. To complete our bride’s style of elegance, larger cascading designs are now suggested, with unique ideas being included to complement each individual bride. There is a big move to outdoor ceremonies where beautiful arches, made with an abundance of flowers, frame the bride and groom. Designs created with petals line the aisle which will lead the way towards your future husband. This year there is no minimalism, just pure luxury. This does not however mean that you need to break the bank for your budget on flowers. Work with your florist and discuss your ideas together and you will be able to bring this vision to reality within your budget.

n 2006 a newborn baby was discarded in a field with no more than a towel wrapped around its naked body for protection. A passer-by found the baby in the field and delivered it to the nearest police station who in turn rushed the baby to a hospital where it was nurtured back to health. After 12 days of searching there was no trace of the biological mother. On the 13th day of this innocent childs’ life a compassionate social worker delivered him into the loving hands of Ubuntu House. This is just one of many such tragic stories of abandoned children in our country, but this is one that has an happy ending. Today the little boy found in a field, whose heart has been healed of the scars of abandonment, has found peace & the unconditional love of two adoptive parents. Ubuntu House, a merciful non-profit organisation in the Western Cape, has cared for more than 470 unwanted babies since it was first established in September 2003. These children have all been given up by their mothers, saved from abortions or simply discarded. This remarkable safety / halfway house has ensured that almost 80% of these babies have found permanent parents and that almost one fifth of them have been re-united with their biological families by the age of 5 months. The importance of the relationship between a mother and her new born child can never be overemphasized. It is from this relationship that all human relationships grow and develop. During those first few critical hours, a child has the right to medical attention. In fact a mothers touch and warm caress is a child’s birthright. Ubuntu is a part of the greater uMephi Project that has 18 such baby halfway houses under its wing. It also has 20 satellite houses, where older children have a home and a loving family to nurture and equip them for life. uMephi also has a number of hospices, where the sick and terminally ill are cared for. When Lauren Daws, Marketing Director at Angelcare heard of the little babies at Ubuntu house she without hesitation sent them an Angelcare Baby Sound & Breathing Monitor. It was our aim, she said, to not only provide them with an Angelcare Baby Sound & Breathing Monitor but to spread the word of such an amazing organisation and appeal to others to reach out and help where they can.

What springs to mind...

by Grant Derrick

The Venue Spring - is about “lings” …ducklings, nestlings, saplings, lamblings and such.. The Dream All little girls dream of that perfect wedding. There must be a prince charming, oh and a princess. There needs to be a host of cuddly toddlers bearing cushions with rings and baskets of petals. There should be strings of bridesmaids that are beautiful, yet pale in comparison to the bride. It must be set in some quaint cathedral in the countryside with lots of doves and the choicest of blooms. The reception must have all the latest fashion knit together with the finest cuisine and décor fit for a queen. Who wouldn’t want a string quartet in some idyllic garden at one of the finest establishments in the land? 3434

Brides - Issue- 9Issue 9 BridesEssence Essence.com

The Reality Sadly for most this remains a dream. It all boils down to what you can afford and how creative your imagination is. There are some fixed costs involved when planning a wedding but don’t let budget restraints dash your hopes. I think the starting point is the theme. Many wedding venues offer a certain ambience that pairs excellently with certain wedding styles. One would hardly have a “beach party” theme at the Michael Angelo Conference Centre; or a formal white wedding at Wimpy. Once a theme is conceived, it gives birth to ideas and eventually grows up to be your perfect wedding. The Location It is easy to see that opting for one location

for both the ceremony and celebration is more cost effective, easier to organise and the least disruptive to the procession. Choosing an indoor or outdoor venue can be a little risky in Spring as there could be rain that may parade on your wedding. If you insist on an outdoor wedding, make sure your faith is strong, or find a location where it never rains, like Alexander Bay in the Northern Cape which has the least amount of rain in South Africa. Everyone knows that there is no gain where nothing is ventured. I am sure that after hibernating all winter like hamsters that an opportunity to venture out into the sunshine is most welcome to all. Once you have decided on which side of the doors you want to spend your exciting and wonderful day, you can then begin to imagine the theme related aspects. There are not enough pages in this publication to go into all of the possibilities. Check our facebook page for readers’ suggestions. Indoors or out What about Spring is the thing? It is about sights and sounds and smells…

An indoor wedding reception is predominantly the norm. The safe bet for the feint-hearted. Just because you are not in the sunshine does not mean that you cannot create the feeling of Spring through your décor, colouring and lighting. Why not bring Spring indoors. Read our Spring flowers article on page 28 for some ideas. If you can afford it, you can even lay down artificial grass, or green event carpeting on the floor. A Spring melange of fruits could be a great table piece – that your guests can eat. Sweet smelling blooms of lily, lavender and jasmine give an aura of Spring. You could even burn scented candles to fake it. Have you ever thought of adding some Springy background noise (other than the blaring ‘80s music)? You could use some “birds of the forest” sound tracks or “ocean shores and seagulls”. Potted plants add real greenery to the scene. How about a pot plant (not the Bob Marley kind)arrangement that guests can take home at the end of celebrations. For outdoor receptions you could have a formal garden party with pergola and bandstand. Or it could be an informal picnicky sort of venue. Here are some interesting venue ideas that you may not have imagined. I won’t mention the typical venues as I am sure that you have already thought of them.

there is always the “braai” (barbeque for our international readers) option, that mostly goes overlooked. This is a nobrainer for us SA men as it is one of our favourite pastimes… now if only we could include sport and beer! Outdoors in Spring may limit the times at which you have your wedding reception to daylight hours, but that is the idea – to enjoy the fresh air and warm sunshine. Added benefits are reduced rates for brunch and lunch time receptions. Colours Spring is a time of re-awakening, new shoots, calves and lambs and newly hatched birdies with fields of bunnies and butterflies. You cannot compete with nature so embrace it. Regardless of your decision, there are some things that work well indoors and out. The colours of Spring are greens and earthy browns, pastel yellows, blues, pinks and purples with vibrant roses and reds. Walk through any budding meadow and take note of the colours, it is plain to see. Here is the wedding venue formula : location + good food + great vibe Good wedding venue =

couple + friends + family

All in all, the venue is simply a place where friends and family can celebrate the new life that you and your spouse are beginning. For everyone to enjoy themselves there needs to be common ground such as good food, a pleasant and comfortable environment and a dollop of good memories. 36

Brides Essence.com - Issue 9

1. A forest picnic 2. A farm or barnyard using bales of hay for chairs and tables 3. A botanical or public garden 4. A nature reserve with fold up chairs and tables 5. A family member or friends’ garden 6. A waterfront – be it a river or lake or a pond with ducks 7. Hire a ferry or barge 8. Hire an open topped double decker bus 9. A mountain top. 10. Somewhere in the bush ( not a bush, the bush ), unless you find one big enough… Bear in mind that certain locations have certain legal requirements eg. no alcohol in public places, no loud music etc. Make inquiries with local authorities to discover what can and cannot be done and then work out your plan around the obstacles. You could always have a sane reception and have a raucous party later (after the non-partiers have gone to rest).

ith only 4 months to go and R12000 budget we were to get married. At the start it seemed enough to have a wedding in court, with 10 guests, followed by a slap up binge at a local take away. Our budget had to cover the following : A venue Table and chair hire Catering Wedding Dress Suit Photographer Flowers Wedding cake Decorations and table settings

38

Brides Essence - Issue 9

Food Beverages Champagne (oops - sparkling fermented grape juice drink not made in France) Honeymoon suite Gifts for the guests DJ A flower girl’s outfit Rings Kids Entertainment We had a fantastic wedding within our budget and catered for 90 people. You may wonder how such a little amount of cash could even cover just one of the items in our list, well here is how we

did it. We scanned the local news ads for specials. By now you realise that we were going the “self-catering” route. Don’t be afraid, read on. When there was a great saving to be made on bottled water, soft drinks, wine and “not the fizzy French stuff in bottles made from fermented grapes whose name we cannot mention because it was not made there”, we stockpiled. We bought enough wine to have 1 red, 1 white and 1 sparkling wine per table, with enough soft drinks to last the entire feast. There was a fantastic special on whole lamb so we bought 1 and the butcher managed to cut the whole lamb into chops, bar 1 or 2 little pieces. We bought boerewors (strange long sausage that really rocks) on special and froze it. Some pork chops were on special and we stockpiled a few kgs. We

arranged with our local supermarket that made roasted chickens to make 10 for us for the day at a special price. The same supermarket also made special rolls for us at a great price. When you negotiate with people and tell them something is for your wedding then generally they will try and assist you. We had a cash bar with free mixers for those who wanted hard tack (strong liquor, or drinkypoo). My fiancé’s aunt stayed on a little small holding out in the countryside and a few weeks prior to the wedding we went and laid some grass and other plants and flowers to neaten up the area where we would hold the ceremony. Everyone stood – no chairs, but the ceremony was concise and lasted 20 minutes. No hymns, no lengthy sermons, just a good short message on the meaning of the

covenant of marriage and the vows. Two days before the wedding we had tables and chairs arrive that we had hired at a bargain, along with crockery, cutlery, glassware and linen. In a large clearing in the garden we arranged the tables and chairs. Everyone chipped in to help where they could. We had friends and family volunteer to help us the day before our wedding to make entrees, salads, desserts and other culinary preparations. All were so blessed to be a part of our day and in contributing their love gifts. Right, that was the catering sorted. The cake, a most delicious and gorgeous cake, was a gift from one of our guests. She was going to make one but at the last minute could not, so she commissioned one of her confectionary friends to make one for us. For the flowers a good friend or ours made beautiful arrangements as her gift to us for the tables. Another of our acquaintances was in the business of entertaining kids, and for a nominal fee was only too happy to get some exposure. She had all sorts of activities for the kids to do – the little angels were under a large tree and running through the garden having fun all afternoon filled to the brim with all manner of sugary delights. My fiancé managed to order a dress online well ahead of the wedding just in case it was a disaster, but it was gorgeous and great value for money (Under R1500). I had a new double breasted suite that I had only worn once before, so I had it dry cleaned and bought a new tie and sash to match the wedding colours. The rings – my mom gave me my grandma’s old engagement ring. She had fingers like sausages and was almost a bangle on my fiancé. I had it resized and polished up like new. For myself, I still wear my inexpensive stainless steel ring today. It could be white gold or titanium but it is a sign of a covenant and certainly not the main ingredient. Another of our close friends, my best 40

man’s wife, made a gorgeous dress for two of our bridesmaids at no cost, her love gift to us. My dad, being retired, was accustomed to taking photographs of everything that moved, or didn’t move, yep, I suppose that means everything. He offered to do the same at our wedding, which he did. I also asked my best man to take pics with my camera, which he did. Double the pics and throw out the ones you don’t like or want. For music, we ripped our cd’s onto an old laptop and I borrowed an USB FM transmitter from work that simply plugged into any USB port and then transmitted the music. We had 2 mini HIFI’s that we tuned to the channel and thus had hours of our favourite music playing without anyone having to intervene. There was no dancing, no “hours of boring speeches”, no hullabaloo and such…I was the only one to give a 5 minute speech with our thank you’s to all who helped make our special day blessed. For wedding favours, being handy, I made some myself. I have a friend who has a sheet metal workshop. He supplied me with stainless steel off-cuts, all cut to the correct size. I sanded the edges and rounded the corners of the little plates. I sent them for laser engraving with our initials and made them into napkin rings. Each guest received a white linen napkin (which we also had made) and stainless steel custom made napkin ring. The larger families scored entire sets. Every time they use them they will remember our special day. Finally, I had managed to find a little guest house near to the wedding venue that offered us a great deal for our overnight stay. They went out of their way to help make our stay special. So with a little innovation, some good friends and some close family members it is possible to turn a pumpkin and a couple of rats into a horse-drawn carriage fit for royalty. ‘The Beautiful Store’

for the perfect gift

For those stumped on what to buy for someone’s birthday, anniversary or on a special occasion, or simply looking to spoil themselves, the recent launch of a brand new niche online store, ‘The Beautiful Store’ is a must-see. A beautifully curated collection of premium and luxury home, décor, lifestyle, jewellery and fashion accessory products are available at the touch of a button. The already extensive and ever-growing supplier list features an interesting mix of top local and international brands – all hand picked by founder Rachelle Bricout. The site offers items that are of exceptional quality and boasts an extensive price range so that there is something for everyone and all occasions. Founded and curated by Rachelle Bricout in 2013, The Beautiful Store has a desirable list of brands that includes Porsche Design,

L’Orangerie, Julina, Menu, Sanders, Von Geusau, Aliverti, and Lavazza, to name a few. ‘The Beautiful Store’s’ inherent French aesthetic comes from Bricout’s love of Paris. Says Bricout, “I am mad about Paris, and without purposefully setting out to, have created a store that has a real French-inspired feel to it.” Overcoming the trust issue that many South Africans still have for online shopping, The Beautiful Store has made the entire shopping process extremely user-friendly - from browsing the site, purchasing, free delivery, and receiving your product timeously and beautifully wrapped to your door, the experience was created to be seamless and effortless. Bricout has placed a lot of focus on creating a particularly friendly, personalised customer experience, something that Sep/Oct 2013 Brides Essence Magazine

is rare in the online shopping environment today. Her customers even get birthday reminders, and advice with shoe sizes! Another unique feature of The Beautiful Store is their Gift Vouchers (which do not expire). These can be purchased at any time, and hand delivered or sent electronically to that special someone to redeem at their leisure. In addition, if you are looking for that something special and are unable to find it on the store, all you need to do is fill out the “Seeking Beauty” page and it will be sourced for you. To the casual observer, The Beautiful Store might look expensive but there are a range of high-quality products at very diverse price points, with some starting at as little as R46. Rachelle selects her products based on beauty and quality, not price, and says she doesn’t care whether something costs R10 or R10,000, if it is beautiful, and of exceptional quality, she would select it for her store. The Beautiful Store stocks mostly handcrafted items with a focus on luxury, craftsmanship and uniqueness. One of their latest additions is the launch of a Gift and Wedding Registry, where you can have a selection of just about anything you like in your own personal online registry for your big day. Shopping for birthday gifts, wedding presents and baby showers has never been this easy! It is nice to know that The Beautiful Store also has a charitable component to their business, with a section where people can contribute towards “Blankets for Charity” 44

and the store donates 10% to DARG for any WagWorld purchases. The Beautiful Store will continue to enhance its range of products and brands, and will always reflect Rachelle Bricout’s personal style and focus on customer service as it grows. Choosing the ‘right’

Wedding Planner by Naomi Lewis

I

f you haven’t been lucky enough to receive a fantastic recommendation it can be a rather daunting task to select the right wedding planner. Searching the Internet, wading through a stack of bridal magazines… and just how do you choose? There seem to be so many options out there. Fortunately there are a couple of key indicators that you’re on the right track. To keep it simple, the most important questions you can ask yourself are Does he or she make you feel comfortable? Does he or she make you feel confident? First off you must be entirely comfortable with your choice and with your Planner. Have a meeting with a potential coordinator before making your booking, or at least have a good long chat on the phone. No wedding planner should deny you this. Do you feel some sort of rapport? Are they genuine, and genuinely interested in giving you good service? Are they actually listening to what you want, or are they pushing you into their ideas of what your wedding should be? Remember you’re going to be working very closely with this person for many months. You must be comfortable! And then do they make you feel confident in their ability to do their job... 46

Brides Essence.com - Issue 9

Photographs are coutesy of Naomi Lewis

Do they know what they’re talking about? Can they answer all your questions? Do they have a bit of experience to back up their ideas? Can they provide references of previous clients if you ask for them? Can they show you pictures or videos to give you a good visual grasp of real weddings they have put together in the past? Even though you may have only had one meeting at this point, you can still draw out some good gauges of their efficiency and the service you are likely to receive. Did they respond quickly and clearly to your enquiry? Here is a good clue – did you receive a generic response, or was it personal and tailored to your questions and needs? Obviously the proof is in the pudding, so to speak – and you will really find out how good (or not) a planner is when you work with them. So if you cannot answer ‘yes’ to both of these key questions... you’ll probably be best advised to keep looking! But if you feel confident and comfortable from the outset, you’re most likely making a great choice.

Feel free about Your special day

by Grant Derrick

T

he church was just as it should always be….silent, neat, orderly and of course, proper. Dark wood pews silently creaking from decades of decent church folk’s visitations and piety. An organist sits miming some sombre piece to make sure that she can reach the pedals well enough, glancing over her spectacles at the sheet music to make sure she has the correct piece. Somewhere a mother and other family members flit about on tiptoes, ensuring all the notices are laid out, the flowers are just so, the guests are smiled at. An usher stands at the door with white gloves on and maybe a top hat and tails smiling and nodding as guests enter…..I’ve seen this before….ah, yes, at funerals. Way too old school for today’s Renaissance of colours and choices. I say “out damn spot”….no not that one….yes, out with tradition, although she has served us well for centuries, and in with variety, a “fiesta salvaje” (google it). Your wedding day should not be what tradition dictates, but what will make your wedding a day to be cherished with comfortable and happy memories that you have created.

White and black is great if you are a penguin, panda or a nun …or a sharks supporter, but God gave us a few more options than that - thanks!!. Why not enliven your day with multicoloured shoes or sashes, why not even go for a rainbow of bridesmaids? It is not the similarities that make a wedding memorable, but the differences. More than ever you are given so many choices with which to paint your wedding canvas and the liberty for you to be the artist. You could get married on a train… why not? or in a forest or on the top of a mountain. A Picnic in a meadow (the veld for South Africans). How about a half day hike into some wild location; it will certainly reduce the catering costs as many won’t be able to make it (ag, shame!!) /;>). Too much emphasis is placed on pleasing everyone else at a wedding. The seating arrangement that caters to everyone’s

likes and dislikes, where to put the families’ herd of black sheep without offending someone - (Please let me know if you have the answer to this one )…it is like wearing a corset; pleasing to everyone but you; you can hardly breathe or speak or smile. Sod putting everyone else’s happiness and joy above your own. I’m not advising that you disregard others, simply that you regard yourselves more. Hopefully you only get married once. When you reminisce about that day, it should be with warm smiles and girlish giggles, not with or shame or burying your head in your hands. Instead of passing on some out of style, moth-eaten or mothball smelling garment to your daughter or granddaughter, let them inherit the liberty and life that you celebrated on your special day. The only limitation is your imagination. Sep/Oct 2013 Brides Essence Magazine

History’s Greatest Decisions takes a light-hearted but informative look at 50 of the best decisions ever made. Entries range from the king who renounced war and brought Buddhism to millions, to a woman on a bus standing up for her rights by sitting down and refusing to move. Sometimes the people who made the big decisions were aware of the gravity of what they were doing, and sometimes they had no idea at all, but they nevertheless arrived at the right answer. This book takes a look at some famous and not-so-well-known examples of people who, when faced with tough choices, made the crucial decisions and got them right. Robben Island A place of inspiration: Mandela’ prison island CHARLENE SMITH

ISBN: 9781920572907 RRP: R160.00

by Grant Derrick

Robben Island – a place of pain, suffering and despair, best known as the place where Nelson Mandela and many other political prisoners spent decades incarcerated for crimes against apartheid. Yet from its dark backdrop, Robben Island has now become a beacon of hope and a symbol of human triumph over evil against all odds, where humility and compassion overcame batons, hunger and violent cruelty. Much in-depth research has made this book a must read if you wish to understand the symbolism of a little island that is renowned worldwide. Charlene Smith unfolds the evolution of the Island’s political and social history, from mail station, place of exile, and military defence post to maximum security prison and World Heritage Site accompanied by many colour and black and white photos. A great deal of research has gone into making this story-like account of the island’s troubled past. This fully revised edition of Robben Island provides absorbing accounts of daring escapes, maritime disasters, lepers ostracized from mainland society, the fates of the great Xhosa chiefs of the nineteenth century, and the unique bonds of friendship and compassion forged among the political prisoners confined on the Island during the apartheid era. Robben Island is not just a tourist attraction but it has a rich fauna and flora that is linked to the islands earliest visitors. Most importantly it holds a rich cultural value as an enduring tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.
