Louise Meyer B

rides Essence caught up with Louise Meyer from Hoedspruit to interview her and showcase more of her stunning photographs. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Rustenburg in the North West Province. After matric I joined the South African National Defence Force and did my basic Training in George. I loved it so much that I permanently joined and served in the Defence Force for 13 years. It was an amazing journey of self discovery and personal growth and I believe that it greatly contributed to my success as a photographer today. I always joke by saying I exchanged my guns for cameras but I still kept on shooting! Where are you based and what geographical area do you cover? I am based in Hoedspruit, a little town in the heart of the bushveld where I live my dream. I cover all the surrounding areas. Destination weddings have become extremely popular and I shoot a lot of International Weddings. It is an amazing adventure for me as I get to see the most amazing lodges. I have a huge passion for nature. The combination of weddings in the bush just completes me as an artist! What made you choose photography as a profession? I was at a friends wedding in 2003, and was more intrigued with the photographer than with the wedding itself! It was like a

4

Brides Essence.com - Issue 16

light just came on! I immediately bought a camera and that was the start of the most wonderful journey! Did you study photography? After my amazing husband bought me a camera I read the manual front to back and back to front. Everything just made sense to me! I did a few courses at Cape Town School of Photography however my biggest mentor was practice, reading and time behind the lens. How long have you been a wedding photographer? While in the Defence Force in Cape Town I photographed a few weddings on the side. I officially started my business six years ago after I resigned and moved to Hoedspruit. How many weddings do you photograph per year? It differs but it is between 50 and 55 weddings. I feel very blessed! A lot of the International Weddings take palce during the week! What sets you apart from other photographers? I am a photographer with a thirst for love, life and truth. In an industry saturated with trendy processing techniques and emphasis on style instead of substance, I strive to make honest images that are full of emotion and reality. I always explain to my couples that I want to capture the essence of who they are as a couple.

What are the latest photographic trends and have you implemented any of them? I love to play with natural light! Especially where I live, I am blessed with the most extraordinary natural setting and lighting. The latest trends are the incorporation of specialised flash photography. Do you have any advice for Brides on how to choose the right photographer? 1. Make sure you like the style of photography. 2. Choose two to three photographers and follow their work. A portfolio can be very deceiving. 3. Make personal contact with the photographer. Don’t just go on their work on their website. It is so important that you have a connection with your photographer. Your photographer is one of the most important people at your wedding. Do you have a favourite pose for Brides? You need to be able to read and manage people. Certain poses

6

Brides Essence.com - Issue 16

work for some people and may not appeal to others. I always say that being in front of the camera is the most frightening and intimidating experience. To select the right pose is so important. What is your preferred equipment brand? Ahhh! I am in love with Canon! I shoot with 2 Canon 5D mark2’s, 50mmL f1.2, 24-70mmL f2.8, 70200mmL f2.8, 100mmL f2.8macro I always shoot with two cameras. What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera? A: Definitely my reflector. If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why? mmm….. I think my 70-200mmL f2.8. It is so difficult my equipment and I are a team. Every lens in my bag has a specific role but the 70-200mm has a very useful focal length range with excellent image quality and superb autofocus performance. It has a fast aperture and one of my favourite features is the 3-stop Image Stabilization.

Photographs Š Louise Meyer

How important is Photoshop in your final images? I am a firm believer that the art of good photography is about taking and composing the picture perfectly. The industry is so saturated with processing techniques that we start forgetting what it is all about. I love to enhance my pictures, crop if needed and freshen it up with a bit of my own magic. If you do nine weddings in one month you have to ensure that the picture is taken perfectly! Do you use a Mac or PC? Which do you prefer? Once you go MAC you never go back!!! I love my MAC and use Aperture software for post processing. It is an amazing and powerful programme and it simplifies my post processing.

Bridal Fair at Rain Farm Game Lodge by Taryn Gurr

The Bridal Fair at Rain Farm Game Lodge on October 5th was a wonderful exhibition of some of KZN’s most talented wedding service providers. Rain Farm Game Lodge is a beautiful wedding destination. I had the privilege of staying at Rain Farm the evening before the fair. What a wonderful night I had. Rain Farm has a huge variety of bird species, as well as several kinds of buck and some giraffe. As I sat on the little veranda outside my room on Saturday night, taking in the beauty that is Rain Farm I enjoyed the beautiful night song of birds, I watched buck as they drank at the dam

14

Brides Essence.com - Issue 15

and wondered what it would be like to stay there forever. I stayed in a stunning “dam front” room with a well equipped self catering kitchen and beautiful bathroom. As I soaked all of the stresses away in the Jacuzzi bath and contemplated the magical sounds outside I couldn’t help but wonder - is this what Maria Van Tropp meant when she sang “The Hills are Alive With The Sound of Music?” The Bridal Fair was a delight, only slightly marred by the rain that came down in the morning. It seems Rain Farm was living up to its name...

Marianne Upton & Gregory Paul Edwards

This event was well organised by TJ and she coped incredibly well with moving service providers around as the rain came down: this speaks volumes as to how the team at Rain Farm would cope with any unforeseen changes if you were getting married at their venue (which is gorgeous by the way...) There were so many vendors who were giving away spot prizes which was lovely to see. Rain Farm also gave away a wedding at their venue. Marianne Upton & Gregory Paul Edwards, who won the prize, were overjoyed. As Marianne’s name was called out we all heard a very enthusiastic “Yes” from what I think was Paul. Watch this space; we will be featuring their wedding in Brides Essence when it happens. The Fashion show which took place in the chapel was a hit. The models looked beautiful and it seemed they were having a great time. The Bridal Fair is an annual event at Rain Farm. If you are getting married in 2016, the 2015 fair should definitely be pencilled into your diary.

History behind the

white dress

by Taryn Gurr

practical colours such as black, grey or even brown. Some wore red or silver. This was done out of necessity and practicality as washing and dying techniques were limited in the 19th century which meant keeping white, white was near impossible. It would also allow the bride to wear the

janeaustensworld.wordpress.com/tag/queen-victoria/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_dress_of_Queen_Victoria

I’ve often wondered where the white wedding dress tradition began and why it has stood the test of time. The first white wedding dress was worn by Queen Victoria when she married Prince Albert in 1840. Before this, brides usually wore their best dresses which were

18

Brides Essence.com - Issue 16

dress again. It was unheard of for a woman to wear a dress once. Even Queen Victoria had her dress refashioned so that she could where them again. As the news of Victoria’s dress spread through Europe, it seems she started a trend for the wealthy. By the end of the 1800’s a white wedding dress was the choice of elite brides in both Europe and the USA. Middle class brides only started following the trend after World War I, due to increased prosperity. During the Great Depression and World War II brides revertednt to wearing their best outfits (which were usually dark) as spending money on a dress they would only wear once was seen as frivolous and was

more often than not financially implausible. The white wedding dress became popular again in the second half of the 20th century as it was worn by fashion icons such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. The trend was brought to the fore as the “white wedding” became the wedding of choice in most Hollywood movies post World War II. One funny poem written in the 1800s that describes a bride’s fate depending on the colour of dress she got married in reveals the silliness of traditions regarding colour. “Married in White, you have chosen right Married in Grey, you will go far away, Married in Black, you will wish yourself back, Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead, Married in Green, ashamed to be seen, Married in Blue, you will always be true, Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl, Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow, Married in Brown, you will live in the town, Married in Pink, your spirit will sink.”

Your dress can be any colour you like although while white is still trending it is not the only colour girls are wearing anymore. Ivory remains a firm favourite with a lot of brides. Pale pink has been the choice of both Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Biel. White is the perfect colour if you are having a traditional white wedding you may want to add a pop of colour with a different coloured pair of shoes or having one or two of the layers of the tulle in your skirt a different colour.

Comoros Islands – Comoros Location : The Comoros are located the northern end of the Mozambique Channel off the eastern coast of Africa, between northeastern Mozambique and northwestern Madagascar. Description : The Comoros is formed by Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Mohéli), and Nzwani (Anjouan), three major islands in the Comoros Archipelago, as well as many minor islets. The islands of the Comoros Archipelago were formed by volcanic activity. Attractions : Mount Karthala, an active volcano located on Ngazidja, is the country’s highest point, at 2,361 m. It contains the Comoros’ largest rainforest (which is rapidly disappearing). Karthala is currently one of the most active volcanoes in the world. There are so many attractions that an entire article would need to be dedicated to this island group alone. Nov/Dec 2014 Brides Essence Magazine

You could visit a perfume flower plantation or take a picnic lunch and relax on the beaches of the south east coast. You must visit Lac Sale, a salt lake that no one knows the depths of. Trou du Prophete, a natural anse which gives the impression of a vast natural swimming pool. Chomoni beach has the whitest and finest sand you’ll find. Climb the volcano, Karthala. You should try and visit the Volo Volo market, the largest on the island, and the nearby Nassib bakery. I hope that you enjoy your travels to these mostly unpublicised locations. regulations of Saadani, which is a national reserve where you are not permitted to return home with any keepsakes other than those on your camera or those purchased at one of the official curio shops. Other things to take note of, particularily in tropical locations, is the risk of tropical diseases as most destinations are in third world countries. Many roads may be in poor condition. Don’t forget that wild animals are wild, that is why they are called wild animals (point made I hope). The two most dangerous creatures in Africa are …not the lion but the Hippo and the Mosquito. The Comoros is a Muslim nation and it is advisable to respect the culture and traditions of any nation that you visit.

Bush Lodge What was your memorable moment on your special day? Andrew and I wanted to make our ceremony as personal as possible and decided to write our own vows. The most poignant moment of the whole day was standing in front of him and making our promises for the future to one another. We were both really emotional and it was one of the best decisions that we made for the whole day. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? Relax... perfection is almost impossible and people will remember the ceremony, the speeches and what a great time they had. The decor is over and above that and ultimately not that important, so if the colours don’t match perfectly or if it’s not exactly how you imagined it, its not the end of the world.

Marrying the man of my dreams - but besides this having to go on a surprise mini game drive before the ceremony as my bridesmaids and I arrived at the Chapel BEFORE any of the guests! What advice do you have for other brides getting married? Be calm and relaxed on the day and evening before the wedding. Just enjoy the time you have with your family and friends before the big day. Savour every moment on the day of the wedding - it passes so quickly! Try and take a moment with your new husband - just the 2 of you to take it all in.

(from Groom) My most memorable moment was just after I walked (it felt like I ended up running) down the aisle, the bridesmaids and

groomsmen

were

walking

towards

me and I caught a glimpse of my beautiful bride standing outside beside her father. The sun reflected off her hair and dress and she appeared to be glowing. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? There is so much to do on the day the best advice I can give (and this is purely to help remove stress) is to prepare well. Confirm with everyone, who has a part to play, that they know what needs to be done and when. Remember that not everything is going to go 100% to plan so don’t stress over the little things that go wrong, things never go exactly according to plan. Most importantly, every now and then try to remember to take time to stop and take precious moments in. The day goes by so quickly.

This was most definitely the love that we felt from every one of our nearest and dearest, whether they were able to make the wedding itself or not. We received so many messages and wishes for the day and it was so special to know how much everyone cared.

The

effort everyone went to to join us too - the groomsmen who flew in from London, our family from Australia and everyone who travelled from around South Africa, their presence was the best gift! What advice do you have for other brides getting married? Definitely get a wedding co-ordinator just for the final arrangements on the day. We did alot of DIY and doubled up decor to move between the chapel and the cocktail/ reception area, as well as alot of last-minute details that were organised on the morning of the wedding.

These took longer than

anticipated and before we knew it it was time to walk down the aisle and I (bride) got a bit overwhelmed. You want to relax that morning knowing that everything is in capable hands.
