Adele Kloppers B

rides Essence got in touch with Adele Kloppers to share some of her stunning photos and to get to know her a little better. Where did you grow up? Half of my life was spent growing up in Johannesburg, the other half here in beautiful Cape Town – luckily for me we have some of the most gorgeous wedding venues in the world right here! Where are you based and what geographical area do you cover? I am based in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, but cover the whole of the Western Cape area. My goal is to start booking international weddings soon! Did you study photography? Yes. I studied at Studio7 School of Photography. What made you choose photography as a profession? I initially wanted to be a fashion photographer. As time went by and I got more exposure to weddings, I quickly developed a love for them. I wanted to be in a job where I got to share in the extra special love and happiness like you get in the wedding industry. When did your passion for photography first begin and what do you enjoy most about it? It started when I was in my teens. I received my first camera for my 14th Birthday. My best friend and I spent

4

Brides Essence.com - Issue 15

hours playing photo shoot! It was my passion, and I enjoy making people feel special behind the camera‌ happiness is beautiful! I felt I had a knack behind the camera, so from there on out I focused on always improving on what I am passionate about! How long have you been a wedding photographer? I photographed my first wedding in 2009, but have only been doing it as a full time job for the past 3 years. How many weddings do you photograph per year? This current season I have about 20 so far, but being quite fresh to the industry means that every season I am growing in leaps and bounds and adding to that list. What are the latest photographic trends and have you implemented any of them? I work mostly on what I feel is looking great. My soft, natural style of photography is very dreamy and romantic, which to me is timeless. What sets you apart from other photographers? How absolutely special it is for me to witness a couple make a lifetime commitment to each other. I am a hopeless romantic to the core and I feel so blessed getting to be there for such an intimate and special moment. I am yet to make it through the vows without hiding a tear or two behind my camera!

What do you offer in your bridal packages? Anything from 400 – 600 edited photos and some of my packages also include coffee table books. I take extra effort to help the bride set up her schedule for the day because it is so important not to rush the most special day of your life! The photos I supply the couple are given on a personalised DVD and packaged neatly. Do you take pre-wedding photographs? I do! It’s one of my favourite parts of photographing a wedding. It is an hour that I get to spend with the new clients and we get to know each other. Having pre-wedding photos makes quite a big difference to the wedding photos because couples are more relaxed and know what to expect on the wedding day. I will also guide them into a few poses that I will photograph on their wedding day, so it really is good practice. Do you have any advice for Brides on how to choose the right photographer? Make sure that you are happy with the photographer’s style and what they offer. Try not to cut corners when it comes to the photographer because your wedding photos are the only material memory you will have to look back on many years after. Try to meet the photographer before booking. He or she will be there for the whole day so you want to know beforehand that you will feel comfortable with them. Are you able to match a bride’s budget? I try to make my prices as competitive as possible, but I only stick to a set pricing structure. Do you have a favourite pose for Brides? I love anything elegant and soft for the brides! Even more if there is a coy smile involved, showing her excitement to marry the man of her dreams. What is your preferred equipment brand? I love Canon. That said, I have never used Nikon. I started with Canon and decided to stick with it. What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera? A: I absolutely adore my reflector to add some light and battle any harsh shadows. What lighting equipment do you take on a shoot? A: I am a big fan of soft natural lighting, only using my reflector to add a bit of light. I have two flashes 6

that I strategically use for the reception and wherever necessary. How important is Photoshop in your final images? A: It is very important. Even though I shoot my photos as close to perfect as I can, I definitely enhance colours a bit if necessary, as well as some skin smoothing where needed.

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why? A:My 85mm lens – the quality is incomparable! Do you use a Mac or PC? Which do you prefer? A: I’m a PC girl. Just like my camera, it has been what I started with and plan on sticking with it. Sep/Oct 2014 Brides Essence Magazine

Maid of Honour duties

by Taryn Gurr

The big day that you have been helping your BFF plan for has finally arrived. Here are a few things that you should do to make the special day as stress free and fun as possible. This is the day that the bride should sit back, relax and enjoy the moment... and the attention. How can you make this happen? 1. Have a to-do list Sit down with the bride a week or so before the wedding and get an understanding of who is doing what and when. It is up to you to make sure that everyone is doing what they should be doing when they should be doing it. 2. Have a schedule... and keep to it! Turn your to-do list into a schedule. It is important to have a well planned time line to ensure that the bride gets to the chapel relaxed and on time. 3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate The morning of the wedding can be a rushed and frantic time and some brides simply forget to stay hydrated and eat. It is imperative that the bride eats healthily as no food (or the wrong food) leads to low blood sugar and low blood sugar leads to irritability. Let’s face it, no one wants to be dealing with a cranky bride-zilla! 20

Brides Essence.com - Issue 15

4. Act as the points person If the bride and groom don’t have a wedding planner you should be the person all the key vendors get in touch with. Give your phone number to family, friends and service providers so that they can contact you. Remember to keep your phone switched on, charged and to have it with you all the time. 5. Chapel & Reception Decor If there is any decor that needs to be delivered or put up, please do this (or delegate it to a trustworthy bridesmaid or two). The bride shouldn’t have to be concerned with this sort of thing,

6. Help her get dressed This is either the most fun or most stressedout time the two of you will have before the wedding so be prepared! Have everything, from undergarments to shoes and jewellery laid out well before the bride starts to dress. The last thing either of you need is to be searching for the special pair of earrings or that extra pair of hose you were sure you packed. 7. Be at her beck & call The bride will need someone to fetch and carry anything she needs, someone to deal with her phone & generally keep her calm. That person should be you. Sep/Oct 2014 Brides Essence Magazine

21

8. Write your speech... before the big day The wedding day is all about the bride. Please don’t think that you will have the time to write your speech the morning of the wedding; you won’t! It is unwise to try and wing it unless you are a seasoned public speaker. 9. Act as her concierge If there are certain family members or friends who really stress the bride out, keep them away from her before the wedding. One stressful family member can create chaos for the bride. 10. Be on drunk patrol If your BFF plans on enjoying some bubbly

22

Brides Essence.com - Issue 15

with the girls while you’re getting ready, it’s your duty to limit the number of glasses to a max of two per person. Also have some munchies about – alcohol on an empty tummy is never a good idea! 11. Make sure the bridal suite is clean & tidy If the bride and her girls are getting ready in the suite in which the bridal couple will be spending their first night together it is up to the maid of honour to make sure that the room is tidy and that everyone has cleared all of their personal belongings out of the room. There’s very little that can ruin a romantic mood better than mess and chaos can.

Groomsman duties

by Grant Derrick

The history of groomsmen dates back to ancient times when dowries were paid by the bride’s family to the groom’s family. Often these dowries contained valuable and precious gifts which were an easy target for bandits and high-way robbers. Thus it was necessary to send a group of armed and able men, the trusted friends of the groom, to protect such dowry and to ensure that it reached the family of the groom. This was not just a thank you gift from one family to another but rather the cost of two families merging and becoming one and so the value of the dowry was more than initially met the eye. Another duty of the groomsmen and even the bridesmaids in ancient Greece was to 24

Brides Essence.com - Issue 15

dress like the bridal couple and so confuse evil spirits who would want to cast a spell over the union. In some Nordic cultures, the groomsmen would accompany the groom to a village and would assist him in procuring a bride the old fashioned way, by kidnapping her of course.

Modern day groomsmen :

Today, unfortunately for some, kidnapping your wife to be has been outlawed in many cultures and so the need for a band of warriors at the grooms side seems to have dwindled somewhat. The paying of dowries has also become a forgotten custom and thus there is no “Cash in Transit” protection

required. This leaves the groomsmen with the less life threatening tasks to perform and it is these that we will visit. The best man is a key member of the groomsmen. We have covered the role of the best man in previous articles but this article aims to outline the functions of the rest of the groom’s companions. Groomsmen’s duties : 1: Assist Best man The groomsmen are to assist the best man in organising the groom’s bachelor party. This would possibly involve digging into pockets to fund such a bash, and is important for all groomsmen to attend. The whole idea of being a groomsman is the privilege of being chosen to make the groom’s day perfect and happily memorable. 2: Know the venue and plans for ceremony It is one of the duties of the groomsmen to familiarise themselves with the ceremony and reception venue. They will be required to greet and usher guests to their seats at the ceremony. The bride’s guests must be seated on the left side of the church and the Groom’s on the right. If a company of

people arrives, then preference must be shown to the eldest members of the group. 3: Get Involved Groomsmen should also be involved with assisting the bridal couple wherever possible. Tasks include such things as assisting in setting up the ceremony venue and the reception venue, and ensuring that things are laid out according to plan. To this end, it is important that the groomsmen are involved with the planning of the wedding at some stage so that they are in the know, as well as attending the rehearsals in order to be familiar with all the procedures. It is also important for the kind groomsmen to arrive at the ceremony well in advance of the groom and bride. 4: Offer support The groomsmen are to be quick to support the groom in any way possible in order to reduce stressful situations and alleviate any burdens that may sneak up on the unassuming groom. To this end the groomsmen should be vigilant and ready to take action when trouble arises. 5: Wedding gift The groomsmen are required to individually or corporately buy a gift for the wedding Sep/Oct 2014 Brides Essence Magazine

couple. Pooling of funds may make for an awesome gift for the newly weds.

are delivered to their destination with care and diligence.

6: Budget themselves Groomsmen are required to finance their own attire either in the form of bought suits or rented, whichever is required or preferred.

9: Help clean up The groomsmen should assist the bride’s family in cleaning up of the venue after the reception party has come to an end should this be required.

7: Chaperon bridesmaids The groomsmen should chaperon the bridesmaids at the reception. They are required to dance with the bridesmaids at the opening dance once the married couple have taken the floor. First the best man and maid of honour and then the groomsmen and the bridesmaids. 8: Protect Gifts The groomsmen, if required, should protect the gifts and ensure that they 26

Brides Essence.com - Issue 15

10: Get the bridal couple to the getaway car Finally, the groomsmen and sometimes including the bridesmaids, are responsible for the tradition of adorning the honeymoon getaway car with all manner of streamers, graffiti and a good walloping of tin cans tied to the rear of the vehicle. I suggest that this task be performed earlier on in the festivities rather than later; remember to keep it clean guys.

stablished in 2009 after two years of searching for the best teas, The Tea Merchant commenced importing tea into South Africa some three years ago in order to satisfy a small group of tea lovers. This has grown into a business today that is passionate about quality tea, teapots and accessories, supplying the tea trade as well as the gift sector with top quality products at prices that are not exorbitant. The tea merchant can make specific recommendations on tea ranges to be served both privately as well as for restaurants, health spas and tearooms. Private tastings can be arranged. Corporate gift sets of both teas and teapots are available. Teas are imported primarily from China with a predominance of teas from Fujian Province, although teas from other areas are also available. Small ranges of tasting tea sets as well as travelling tea sets are stocked. All products are packaged suitable for airfreight or overland shipping. Sep/Oct 2014 Brides Essence Magazine

Cindy Nell-Roberts’s Top Travel Tips Packing • Pack 3 or 4 pashminas in different colours - they double up as many things from, scarfs, to sarongs to headscarfs or a bag. • Roll your clothing up (like a towel) instead of folding and it won’t crease • Place your cosmetics, skincare and underwear etc. in separate zip lock bags for easy access and to keep your suitcase tidy during travel, and in case something leaks. • To prevent liquid products from bursting (and ruining everything else) inside your bag, cut a small square of plastic wrap, unscrew the product’s lid, set the plastic wrap on top, and screw the lid back on. That way if the lid pops open, no product can spill out. Also try to expel some of the air in the product by gently squeezing it before sealing the lid as this will allow some extra room to expand without popping the lid off. • Protect powder makeup products from breaking while traveling by sticking a cotton pad or cotton ball inside the compact before putting it in your makeup bag. • Toss your makeup brushes or other small beauty products in a slim sunglasses case when traveling so you won’t lose them. • Leave some space for anything you might want to bring back! Skincare • Use self-tanning wipes to give skin a hint of a glow and keep a mini hairbrush to keep hair tidy. • Keep a small bottle of spritzer toner in your bag to keep your skin hydrated. • Consider the climate at your destination. If it is drier than you are accustomed to, then you need a heavier moisturizer; if it’s more humid, you might not need moisturizer at all. • Apply intense moisturizer the night before you are going to fly. This will help increase hydration in your skin before you’re exposed to the dehydrating effects of cabin pressure. Traveling • Caffeine is a major cause of dehydration. Opt for water, refreshing smoothies or fruit juices to keep you hydrated during your trip. Beauty • Make up remover wipes work well to freshen up, as a make up and stain remover and doesn’t take space or make mess and is allowed through customs. • Keep a nude lipstick, mascara, B.B. cream in your travel bag for a quick freshen up. • Avoid bright nail polish on your fingertips (wear on it your toes instead since colour tends to last longer there anyway) and go for a “barely there” shade on your fingers. Chips are less likely to be detected when you’re wearing a pretty nude hue. You can buy Caribbean Tan and Essence products from most Dischem stores nation wide! 38

Date of Wedding: 8 March 2014 Bride and Groom names: Karen and Christopher Marais Venue: Mont Rouge Tulbagh Dress: The Wedding Boutique Hair: Hair Studio 49 Make up: Ilze Flowers: Flowers for Africa Wedding stationery: Oh Yay Photographer: Edward Duckitt Wedding Cake: Cake Toppers made by Edible Love Honeymoon Destination: Mhlanga What was your memorable moment on your special day? The day was filled with so much love and joy. Everyone who attended our wedding was special to us as a couple. Some memorable moments, saying our vows under the willow trees with the stream bubbling beside us. It was totally surreal. Our Minister Morne called our families up to pray with us. It was a really special moment. We had a fairy light tent in the open garden, we danced all night under the stars. The day was filled with special DIY personal touches that were special to Chris and I as a couple. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? Dont stress about the small things. No one will notice if something goes wrong. Take time out during the wedding planning process and spend time with your soon to be husband. Just the two of you -with no wedding talk. Ask for favours from friends and family. You will be surprised how talented everyone is . My mother made our bouquets and the table settings. A Family friend made the favours and another family friend was the DJ! Forget about what it traditional and what everyone else does at their wedding. This is your wedding, do it your way.

Date of Wedding:16 August 2013 Bride and Groom names: Natalie Jordaan and Shiru Zhang Venue: Ambre resort Dress: Monsoon vintage Photographer: Sookoo photography Wedding Cake: Ambre resort: frozen nougat Honeymoon Destination: Same as Wedding What was your memorable moment on your special day? Everything was so perfect, but during the photo session, right at the end, on the beach, it started raining. I was already getting wet, so I decided just to go with it, and I went, dress and hair and all, into the ocean! It was so spontaneous and a wonderful feeling! It also made for some great photographs. After that, the groom and I changed into our swimsuits and spent the rest of the celebration (which was out in the open areas of the resort) in the warm tropical rain in our cozzies. So fun! What advice do you have for other brides getting married? Things most probably won’t go to plan. Just go with it! In our case, the very thing that we did not expect (the rain) was actually the highlight of the wedding! Everyone said it was the most beautiful, most romantic, most fun wedding ever... from the point when the rain actually started! So always take anything that might go wrong and turn it into an opportunity. I didn’t have any flowers, so my groom climbed a coconut tree on the resort and got me a coconut as my “bouquet”. Best idea ever!
