Your Support
Dear Parents, College is a wonderful time when students spread their wings. We at Briar Cliff University want students to develop an independent spirit of self-reliance, but they still need support from family and friends, which can make all the difference. Listen to what is happening in your student’s life. Encourage your student to ask for help, use Briar Cliff’s excellent resources, try exciting adventures, develop new skills and make good choices spiritually, physically, academically and socially. Our faculty and staff are ready to assist your student in getting the most out of college. Your support, guidance and encouragement will help ensure that your young person has a great BCU experience that will last a lifetime! – Dr. William Mangan, Dean of Academic Affairs

Mar Kellen ’62 Liz Neitzel Kellen ’62, Alton, Iowa – I was raised in a Catholic family with strong morals. It also helped that my mother wrote a letter to me every week. Keep in touch with your student. Stress the importance of a college education and being independent. Liz

Mary Kellen Hunt ’87, Alton, Iowa – My parents called me often and gave me support whenever I needed it. They also encouraged me to make decisions on my own. Another smart thing they did was not allowing me to return home until late October. Encourage your student and give him or her plenty of room to grow. Katie Hunt ’12, Granville, Iowa – My family lives only 45 minutes from campus, so they’d take me shopping, out to eat and attend sporting events. Sometimes, mail and care packages from family and friends were all I needed to get me through the day. Plus, I loved the fact that my parents were just a phone call away. Even if your student may say otherwise, send mail and call. And, don’t underestimate hugs and kisses – they count as support, too.

My parents were very supportive of me in class and on the soccer field and always tried to help me in any way they could. They also expected a lot and wanted me to push myself. Without them, college wouldn’t have gone the way it did. My parents are the reason for my success. :) Thanks so much, Mom and Dad! Without my parents’ support I would have never made it. I am grateful to them for everything they did. They were always there for me. Alvin [Gene] Williams, Farmington, Mo., pictured with his parents, Alvin Williams III and Shawn Williams.

My parents were always there for me and encouraged me to give my best to succeed. They always asked about my classes, made sure I was involved on campus and got to know my college friends and faculty. My mom, dad, sisters, my family – they are everything to me! Leaving home for college can be hard, but knowing I had my family’s total support from day one until graduation made the transition easier and the whole experience more enjoyable for me. Even though my family couldn’t be with me physically, their presence was unmistakable in many other ways because of their support. Mary Schotzko, Brandon, S.D., pictured with her parents, Dennis and Pat, and family.

During college, my family was there when I needed advice in choosing my path. They kept me going. Without my family, my experience would have been much different. Because of them, I considered BCU as my home away from home. Ethan Swanson, Sioux City, pictured with his parents, Pat and Bobbi, sister, Erin, brother-in-law, Ron, and nieces, Shaughnessy and Ania.
