a warm welcome These free lunchtime concerts are brought to you by Breathe Arts Health Research in partnership with Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity. Summertime comes with thoughts of travel, so this season we bring the world to you! Our busiest programme to date contains a vibrant mix of theatre, dance and music. We join forces with world famous organisations, the National Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe to bring a variety of interesting pieces to enjoy. We offer you the opportunity to dance, interact with performers and even be part of a performance yourself! Or, you can simply sit back and be entertained by some world class performers in the unique setting of Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

Monday 7th July — Special Triple Bill Programme Sage Dance Company 1pm Capital Age Festival Event Sage is a unique community based dance company for the 55s and over. Formed in 2010, they have established themselves as a classically based repertoire company of recognised quality. They continue to learn new skills and are advocates of staying active no matter what your age. We welcome them as part of the Capital Age Festival.

New English Ballet Theatre — Mad Women 1.20pm Celebrating Big Dance Week A modern ballet company with a mission to present exciting new work to the widest possible audience. In Mad Women, Royal Ballet choreographer Kristen McNally presents a satirical exploration of the traditional conflict between men and women as seen in the context of the late 1950’s housewives. We are delighted to welcome them to perform for us.

Alexander D.Great 1.45pm Capital Age Festival Event Alexander D.Great uses wit and irony to comment on the human condition. BBC calypsonian–in–residence since 2000, Alexander’s calypsos are brilliant snapshots of life. He likes to tread on the corns of people in power, whilst celebrating those whom he considers worthy of praise! Alexander was UK Calypso Monarch in 2010 and 2011.


The Sparrows of Paris Monday 14th July La Fête Nationale Travel back in time and space to old Paris of the 1920s-1950s. Headed by chanteuse Carolyn Saint-Pé with accordion, guitar and double bass, The Sparrows bring you vintage songs of Edith Piaf as well as the rhythms of the French, Bal Musettes and Guinguettes of yesteryear.

The Sugar Kings Monday 21st July Driven by the spirit of 1950’s Cuba, The Sugar Kings present vocal harmonies from the salons of Havana to the rhythms of the Cuban countryside. Join Flavio and his band for some of the sweetest sounds around town.

Somaye Monday 28th July Somaye is a jazz singer who incorporates poetry and cross-cultural influences into her sets. Her beautiful voice wows audiences and on occasions has been known to bring people to tears. What really sets her apart however, is her Jazz / Middle Eastern fusion of music, coupled with heartfelt words.


August 2014 Royal Academy of Music Musical Theatre Singers Monday 4th August First World War Centenary Events 1914-1918: The Other Theatre of War. Performing as part of the First World War Centenary, Noam Galperin and The Royal Academy of Music, Musical Theatre Singers perform a specially adapted concert of popular songs from the London shows, revues and music halls that lifted the hearts of both soldiers and civilians during those dark years.

Teresa Walsh Monday 11th August Drawing upon music from the Baroque, Classical, late romantic era, Impressionists and 20th Century, Teresa’s concert reflects the wide diversity of the flute’s personality, from the haunting lament of Debussy to the angry, passionate, jazzy inflections of David Heath.

The Melodic Monday 18th August Young, South London band The Melodic create a beguiling sound, blending British folk with South American and West African rhythms to mesmerising effect. These influences feed into each other to produce a truly innovative band — a fusionfolk made by digital natives with Brixton’s Reggae-bass-culture underpinning their sound.

National Theatre — Watch This Space Festival... on the road This summer, the National Theatre’s Watch This Space Festival packs its bags and heads out on tour.

Micro-Shakespeare 2 showings: Central Hall 12pm-2pm & 3pm-5pm ¡Hola Hamlet! Spanish anarchy meets the Bard. As you manipulate the objects, you won’t have a clue what you’re doing or the story that you’re telling, but your audience of two will have a great time listening on their own headphones to a warped Spanish-take on a Shakespearean classic. La La La Tempesta! — Created by Laitrum Teatre for the National Theatre

Crazy in Love! 2.30pm, Special Showing: Evelina Hospital Atrium Level 3 Please note that priority seating will be given to children from the Hospital.

5pm, Fountain Garden Please note that if the weather is wet this will relocate to Central Hall. An acrobatic comedy about the highs and lows of falling in and out of love. Four mismatched lovers dream they’re trapped inside a fantastical circus and despite all their squabbling and tussling, the show must go on! Inspired by the lovers from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a completely happy ending is not necessarily guaranteed… (Run time 25 minutes) — Created by Joli Vyann for the National Theatre


September 2014 Special Event Globe Education Shakespeare’s Globe — Story Days For the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth Breathe is delighted to bring you Story Days from Globe Education, Shakespeare’s Globe. From tales told around the camp fire to tales told under the duvet with a torch, nothing matches the magic of a well-told story. In these dynamic and unforgettable retellings of Shakespeare’s stories Globe Education storytellers blend the traditional with uniquely modern approach to offer a captivating experience, bringing Shakespeare’s timeless words to life for the whole family. Recommended for ages 6+

Special Event The Tempest Monday 1st September Come with us on a journey to a brave new world… When a group of travellers find themselves shipwrecked on an enchanted island they encounter its strange and vengeful inhabitants. There’s the magician Prospero, who is angry and may have had something to with the storm, his daughter Miranda, the mischievous spirit Ariel and Caliban, who has a pretty large chip on his shoulder. Is this the stuff of nightmares or dreams?

Special Event Romeo & Juliet Monday 8th September

Romeo loves Juliet, and she loves him back. But Romeo’s a Montague and Juliet’s Capulet — two families either side of a bitter and age-old feud. Surely it will never work. See if love can conquer all in this, the most famous love story ever known.


Apple of My Eye Monday 15th September Apple of my Eye sing sweet songs full of love and loss, curses and damnations, adventure and ruin. What binds these tales together are the rich and original vocal harmonies, sung both a capella and over the intricate melody lines of the bazouki, mandolin and violin supported by the texture of the guitar, harmonica and double bass.

Creole Brothers Monday 22nd September A spiced up creole stew of the best folk/roots-led music from the seas and woodlands of the British Isles, flavoured with the fiddle and guitardriven melodies of the rivers and mountains of Appalachia all the way down to the accordion-pumping rhythms of the hot, steamy swamps and bayous of Cajun and Creole Louisiana.

Mosi Conde Monday 29th September From Guinea Conakry’s leading griot family — Mosi Conde is an extraordinarily talented musician, firmly rooted in tradition with a global sonic awareness. Solo, playing a multitude of instruments (including Kora, Bolon, Balafon and Djembes), or with his band, he creates music that excites and delights.

The Small Island Project Wednesday 2nd July A warm and soulful performer, jazz vocalist Shireen Francis alongside Ross Anderson on guitar and Carlos Fuentes on percussion bring the warmth, rhythm and colours of the Caribbean, Brazil and Cuba, as well as a few jazz gems.

Kai Hoffman Quartet Wednesday 9th July Celebrating Big Dance Week Come shake a tail-feather and celebrate Big Dance Week in true swinging style. Kai Hoffman is a rising international star, and has been compared to legends like Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. With her band the Kai Hoffman Quartet she will performing a set of upbeat dance tunes and jazzy numbers.

Pablo Dominguez Wednesday 16th July Flamenco Guitarist Pablo Dominguez is joined by singer Javier Macias and dancer and percussionist Jesus Olmedo to give a performance that combines traditional Flamenco with influences of jazz and latin music. Each song makes reference to a different province of Spain where they are typically played and danced.


CANDOMBE! feat Guillermo Rozenthuler Wednesday 23rd July With strong African roots, infectious beats and beautiful melodies, Uruguayan candombe is the unsung hero of South American music. It lives and breathes in the streets of Montevideo, and has evolved throughout the 20th century with influences from jazz, bossa nova and funk. Discover its uniqueness and dance to the rhythm of the drums…

Abdoulaye Samb Wednesday 30th July Influenced by the scenery and the surroundings of his Senegalese village, Abdoulaye began to create his own sound. Working in a building yard, he grabbed his tools and with the help of a few fishing rods and a petrol can he made his own guitar! The guitar became his favourite instrument. Abdoulaye’s music has grown from his travels, collaborations and research in Africa and Europe.

Kamchàtka Thursday 7th August, 1pm, King’s Courtyard Please note the different day and location. National Theatre Watch This Space Festival Today’s surprise performance will take place in and around the outside spaces of King’s Courtyard and its surrounding garden. Eight characters lost in the city, each carrying their own suitcase. Friends or foes? Guests or intruders? Passers-by or immigrants? Naïve and curious, they know nothing about our norms, our rules or our way of life. As they explore our environment, we become active participants in the exchange.

The Riot Ensemble Wednesday 13th August Artists have long romanticised the universal human acts of sleeping and waking up. Today’s concert, inspired in parts by scenes taken from Shakespeare, features music where composers, too, delve into this mysterious state of consciousness. The music is often fragmented, ephemeral and in turn both beautiful and surprising.

Emilie Capulet Wednesday 20th August Celebrating Debussy’s Birthday Award-winning Franco-British pianist Emilie Capulet will plunge you into the shimmering kaleidoscopic sound world of Debussy’s music in a recital featuring his exuberant L’Isle Joyeuse and a selection of his renowned Préludes and Estampes. An entertaining and engaging speaker, Emilie will bring to life the stories behind each work.

Joo Yeon Sir and Laura Snowden Wednesday 3rd September Prize winning students Joo Yeon Sir and Laura Snowden launch our exciting new collaboration with the Royal College of Music. Both are talented musicians and composers; Joo Yeon won the BBC / Guardian Young Composer of the year in 2005. Graduating from the Yehudi Menuhin School, Laura took the Guitar prize in her first year at the Royal College.

Adriano Adewale Wednesday 10th September Rooted in the musical traditions of Nigeria, Angola and Brazil and infused with contemporary European classical and jazz styles, percussionist and composer Adriano Adewale’s music is a global fusion of musical influences. With his outstanding international ensemble they create a colourful cocktail of infectiously funky rhythms and intimate soulful ballads: this is music to appeal directly to the senses.


Majagua Wednesday 17th September This exciting and unique trio will bring you an explosion of colours, rhythms, harmonies and melodies from the ‘whole’ of Latin America, from Mexico — through to Colombia — to Argentina, performing cumbias, cuecas, joropos, bambucos and other grooves that will make you move from within.

Jonathan Mayer Wednesday 24th September Prepare to be entranced as three of the very finest UK-based Indian classical musicians Jonathan Mayer (Sitar), Mitel Purohit (Tabla) and Teymour Housego (Bansuri/flute) come together to share their musical journey through the gentle raga melodies and tala rhythms of India.

Throughout October 2014... Special Events The Science Gallery London — Frequencies How do the rhythms of hospital life sound? Find out by tuning into Frequencies — a series of sound installations and performances produced by patients, staff and artists working together to explore the cycles of their lives. Brought to you by Science Gallery at King’s College London, these will be taking place throughout different locations around Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals this October.

Breathe Performance Programme Exciting New Partnerships for 2014

New English Ballet Theatre The National Theatre NEBT are a modern ballet company with a mission to present exciting new work to the widest possible audience, committed to the continual reinvention of classical ballet and giving artists the creative space to explore its boundaries. They are an exciting new addition to our summer programme this year and we look forward to finding a space in their busy schedule to come to perform for us again.

The National Theatre’s Watch this Space Festival packs its bags this summer and heads out on tour, taking some of the best free outdoor entertainment right onto our doorstep, which we are delighted about, as they join our performance programmes in Guy’s, St Thomas’ & Evelina Hospitals. Performances will include: Crazy in Love: An acrobatic comedy about the highs and lows of falling in and out of love. Micro-Shakespeare An installation of five interactive boxes which casts the audience as a performer or private viewer in an intimate performance and Kamchatka a surprise walkabout performance.

Founded in 1882 the RCM trains gifted musicians from all over the world for international careers as performers, conductors and composers. It is one of the world’s leading conservatories with illustrious alumni including Holst, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Dame Joan Sutherland, and Mark-Anthony Turnage. We will be offering musicians a regular platform to come to perform for you.

Globe Education Partnering with Shakespeare’s Globe we are extremely excited to be bringing you four fantastic, accessible versions of Shakespeare’s plays over the coming months that span the wide variety of his works: The Tempest, Romeo & Juliet, Merchant of Venice and Othello. Check out the programme for details of the first of these.
