Since 1995, Breakthrough students and Teaching Fellows have descended upon the beautiful campus at St. John’s School for an enriching summer of academics, friendship, and character building. This summer, in addition to academics, students participated in a range of extracurricular activities including guitar, dance, and soccer.

“I’ve learned to listen to my students and let them be my teacher at times because they are powerful enough to advocate for themselves. Thinking about 11-13 year olds investing their summer into taking classes from 8am-4pm each day is so inspiring. The kids make this program what it is and they are the reason I decide to teach every day!” - Daviona Sims, Teaching Fellow, St. John’s

2019 was the fourth Breakthrough summer of learning at Connect Community. Students from local area schools throughout the diverse Gulfton area formed tight-knit relationships with classmates and Teaching Fellows while participating in academic and extracurricular activities.

“My experience at Breakthrough is different from school because it is not all about just trying to pass a test and getting grades. Breakthrough not only teaches you new subjects for your next year ahead but they have electives that help you beyond schooling.” - Thaddeus Watson, Student, Connect

“I decided to go to Breakthrough because I wanted to keep learning over the summer. I didn’t want to stay home and do nothing. I wanted to do something positive. No school I’ve ever gone to gives this type of excitement to the kids. The teachers want to interact with us as friends and also try to make the lessons fun.” - Gerson Mendoza, Student, Gregory-Lincoln

The Gregory-Lincoln Educational Center site opened this summer with an inaugural class of rising 7th grade students. Serving students from across the Houston Independent School District, this site had a successful launch with the support of the HISD Foundation from a grant given by the Houston Endowment.

I was able to form strong bonds with all of my students because of Breakthrough’s dedication to the students’ academics, socioemotional learning, and extracurricular activities.

Breakthrough instills the core values I need for school, like time management. Breakthrough also shows that I value my education to future schools, and helped me to get a scholarship to St. John’s.

I wanted to inspire and change young people’s lives. My favorite aspect of Breakthrough is cultivating meaningful relationships with my students so they know they have someone to talk to.

- Brian Rivera Teaching Fellow, Connect

- Hanan Wisham Student, St. John’s

- ZaDarius Webber Teaching Fellow, Gregory-Lincoln

I decided to join Breakthrough because I thought it would be a good way to grow. I also think that Breakthrough will help me have a higher chance of going to my dream college.

I decided to join Breakthrough because I want to be the first person in my family to go to college. I also joined Breakthrough because I really want to graduate with a degree that can make me successful.

At Breakthrough the teachers make learning fun. They go into detail with the lessons and make sure everyone understands. I know I’ll be successful because of Breakthrough.
