ANNUAL REPORT

2017-2018

A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As I enter my 10th year with Breakthrough Houston (BTH), I offer a few reflections. When I joined BTH in 2009, there was a full-time staff of two. We now have a full-time staff of seven. In those early years, we accepted 25 students per grade level from various middle schools. We now accept 60 students per grade level that come from 20+ middle schools, mostly from HISD. We originally had one site that used St. John’s School during the summer and Episcopal HS during the school year. We now have 3 locations: the original SJS/EHS site, a site founded 3 years ago at KIPP CONNECT serving Connect Community schools, and a new site opening this year at Gregory-Lincoln Education Center which will serve students from Achieve 180 schools in HISD. Our College Bound program, which began in 2008, has now graduated 10 classes of seniors with a 99% college acceptance rate. Ten years ago, we trained 24 Teaching Fellows for careers in education. This summer we will train 84. Our 2015-2020 Strategic Plan called for growth, and we have achieved that growth and are planning for more. Finally, our 501(c)(3) status, which has been under the auspices of St. John’s School since 2008, will soon become an independent 501(c)(3) encompassing all sites under the Breakthrough Houston name, and our faithful Advisory Council will become a Board of Directors. Highlights from 2017-18 include the following: Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in late August and Breakthrough Houston was able to raise $25,542.75 for our 25-30 families who had severe losses. Money

was given out in the form of Walmart gift cards as well as helping to pay for roofing and other building materials for affected families. Twenty-three graduating seniors are attening 12different colleges and universities, including Stanford University, University of Virginia, St. Edwards, American, Northeastern, University of Houston, and University of Texas at Austin. For a 3rd summer, our sophomores and juniors continued their ACT Prep work and a College Knowledge “boot camp” for 2 weeks. The 8th annual college trip included a trip to Austin and Dallas and featured visits to St. Edward’s, University of North Texas, and UT Dallas. The 2017-2018 School Year Program brought in The Niroga Institute to offer yoga and mindfulness activities during advisory period. Fifty-eight out of sixty 8th grade students received high school options counseling and as a result 89% were accepted to college-preparatory high schools this fall. At our 11th annual fundraising luncheon, Dr. Ruth Simmons inspired us with her message about how essential it is to build healthy communities by offering educational opportunities like Breakthrough. Naomi Sierra-Gomez, a BTH student and a BTH Teaching Fellow, also spoke.

The 2018 summer program hosted 178 students, 36 Teaching Fellows, 6 Teaching Assistants and 6 Instructional Coaches. The students continue to view their Teaching Fellows as role models and mentors for their promising futures. The 4th annual camping trip for 9th grade students and Teaching Fellows at Galveston Island State Park was a huge success and pushed the 9th graders to be active leaders throughout the summer. We continue to emphasize a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum and character-based learning. A newly developed SEL pre- and post- summer survey showed considerable student growth in self-control, social intelligence, zest, and a sense of belonging at Breakthrough Houston. We are grateful for your generosity, support and belief in our double mission of educating high-achieving, motivated students from underserved communities for college preparatory high schools and college. Additionally, we inspire and train the next generation of educators. We hope that you will continue to join us as we pursue growth in other areas of the city and other school districts and broaden our impact on even more students and Teaching Fellows in the coming years.

OUR TEACHERS

I came back for a second summer because I loved the Breaktrhough culture and the students. Also, the support that is offered for Teaching Fellows here is amazing. The instructional coaches, professional development, and community of people are inspirational. It’s fantastic for someone like me. I’m eager to refine my skills before going off to teach full-time. - Kathryn Powell, Ball State University graduate and 2018 Teaching Fellow
